• Can I use PayPal to charge a Credit Card automatically?

  If I have a Visa card number saved in my database, is there a way I can charge that Visa automatically through the PayPal API without the user having to enter anything? We want to keep this site as easy and hassle-free to use as possible. It would be a variable amount, based on how they use the site. (Don't worry, proper disclaimers will be in place, and the user will be notified) What about these "recurring payments"? That way I don't have to store the CC info on my website, but do they allow variable amounts that I could periodically send to PayPal?

• Threaded Django task doesn't automatically handle transactions or db connections?

  I've got Django set up to run some recurring tasks in their own threads, and I noticed that they were always leaving behind unfinished database connection processes (pgsql "Idle In Transaction"). I looked through the Postgres logs and found that the transactions weren't being completed (no ROLLBACK). I tried using the various transaction decorators on my functions, no luck. I switched to manual transaction management and did the rollback manually, that worked, but still left the processes as "Idle". So then I called connection.close(), and all is well. But I'm left wondering, why doesn't Django's typical transaction and connection management work for these threaded tasks that are being spawned from the main Django thread?

Hello With sites like The Daily WTF and recurring threads on Slashdot and elsewhere about bad programming, I figured that, to avoid people reinventing the wheel (badly or not), there should be a good, fat book on programming that would go through typical programming problems and show good, known algorithms, either in pseudo-code or some language with an easy syntax so that the language is not an issue.   Don't know if this is possible, but I'd like to select records based on the field value of recur_type, where the 'm' is the day of the week. • Online payment service recommendation?

  We're currently in the process of looking for an online payment service that will allow us to accept credit cards, etc. However, our business model also involves revenue sharing in a model similar to that of iTunes. That is, content creators will be able to sell content through our site and we take a small percentage of the revenue. Can anyone recommend an online payment service that supports this model? We're also interested in: Accept all major credit cards Being able to do international transactions in the appropriate local currency Recurring transactions (monthly, yearly, etc.) Additionally, if the service provided a Java API for integration or the ability to broker PayPal transactions that would be an added bonus. I know Amazon provides a hosted payment service, but I'd prefer not to require all of our customers to have an Amazon account. That provides an additional barrier to entry that we'd prefer to avoid. I'd appreciate any recommendations you can provide!

• Does anyone know of a good script to force file downloads and yet protect download links on a PHP se

  I tried using a free script that I found on the Internet but it is giving me problems with Windows users (even though they are using IE 8, so it's not an option for me to ask them to upgrade their browsers.) Here's the requirements: I have a bunch of Microsoft Word and pdf files that need to be protected so that only authorized users can download them. I have already created the login system and the current script I have works fine for non-IE browsers. However, I keep getting recurring problems with Windows users who keep complaining that their files download corrupt and yet everyone else either using Mac or Linux or any other browser gets on just fine. The script must allow me to store files in a directory but force download of the file upon the function call. Must work well with most major browsers, especially I.E. If you have any practice suggestions or know of any great scripts (even if they are paid, I'm sick of this problem and would probably pay for a paid script) it would be greatly appreciated in advance.

• How to schedule hundreds of thousands of tasks?

  We have hundreds of thousands of tasks that need to be run at a variety of arbitrary intervals, some every hour, some every day, and so on. The tasks are resource intensive and need to be distributed across many machines. Right now tasks are stored in a database with an "execute at this time" timestamp. To find tasks that need to be executed, we query the database for jobs that are due to be executed, then update the timestamps when the task is complete. Naturally this leads to a substantial write load on the database. As far as I can tell, we are looking for something to release tasks into a queue at a set interval. (Workers could then request tasks from that queue.) What is the best way to schedule recurring tasks at scale? For what it's worth we're largely using Python, although we have no problems using components (RabbitMQ?) written in other languages.

• Informal Interviews: Just Relax (or Should I?)

  I was in our St Kilda Rd office last week and had the chance to meet up with Dan and David from GradConnection. I love what these guys are doing, their business has been around for two years and I really like how they have taken their own experiences from University found a niche in their market and have chased it. These guys are always networking. Whenever they come to Melbourne they send me a tweet to catch up, even though we often miss each other they are persistent. It sounds like their business is going from strength to strength and I have to think that success comes from their hard work and enthusiasm for their business. Anyway, before my meeting with ProGrad I noticed a tweet from Kevin Wheeler who was saying it was his last day in Melbourne - I sent him a message and we met up that afternoon for a coffee (I am getting to the point I promise). On my way back to the office after my meeting I was on a tram and was sitting beside a lady who was talking to her friend on her mobile. She had just come back from an interview and was telling her friend how laid back the meeting was and how she wasn't too sure of the next steps of the process as it was a really informal meeting. The recurring theme from this phone call was that 1) her and the interviewer got along really well and had a lot in common 2) the meeting was very informal and relaxed. I wasn't at the interview so I cannot say for certain, but in my experience regardless of the type of interview that is happening whether it is a relaxed interview at a coffee shop or a behavioural interview in an office setting one thing is consistent: the employer is assessing your ability to perform the role and fit into the company. Different interviewers I find have different interviewing styles. For example some interviewers may create a very relaxed environment in the thinking this will draw out less practiced answers and give a more realistic view of the person and their abilities while other interviewers may put the candidate "under the pump" to see how they react in a stressful situation. There are as many interviewing styles as there are interviewers. I think candidates regardless of the type of interview need to be professional and honest in both their skills/experiences, abilities and career plans (if you know what they are). Even though an interview may be informal, you shouldn't slip into complacency. You should not forget the end goal of the interview which is to get a job. Business happens outside of the office walls and while you may meet someone for a coffee it is still a business meeting no matter how relaxed the setting. You don't need to be stick in the mud and not let your personality shine through, but that first impression you make may play a big part in how far in the interview process you go. • A Small Utility to Delete Files recursively by Date

  It's funny, but for me the following seems to be a recurring theme: Every few months or years I end up with a host of files on my server that need pruning selectively and often under program control. Today I realized that my SQL Server logs on my server were really piling up and nearly ran my backup drive out of drive space. So occasionally I need to check on that server drive and clean out files. Now with a bit of work this can be done with PowerShell or even a complicated DOS batch file, but heck, to me it's always easier to just create a small Console application that handles this sort of thing with a full command line parser and a few extra options, plus in the end I end up with code that I can actually modify and add features to as is invariably the case. No more searching for a script each time :-) So for my typical copy needs the requirements are: Need to recursively delete files Need to be able to specify a filespec (ie. *.bak) Be able to specify a cut off date before which to delete files And it'd be nice to have an option to send files to the Recycle bin just in case for operator error :-)(and yes that came in handy as I blew away my entire database backup folder by accident - oops!) The end result is a small Console file copy utility that I popped up on Github: https://github.com/RickStrahl/DeleteFiles The source code is up there along with the binary file you can just run. Creating DeleteFiles It's pretty easy to create a simple utility like DeleteFiles of course, so I'm not going to spend any talking about how it works. You can check it out in the repository or download and compile it. The nice thing about using a full programming language like C over something like PowerShell or batch file is that you can make short work of the recursive tree walking that's required to make this work. There's very little code, but there's also a very small, self-contained command line parser in there that might be useful that can be plugged into any project - I've been using it quite a bit for just about any Console application I've been building. • Set iPhone Style Location Based Alerts On Your Android Device With Google Now

  Location based alerts of iPhone are very useful. You can set an alert to popup as soon as you reach a specific location like “Pickup milk and eggs” when I’m near a grocery store. This feature was missing in Android for a long time, but last week at Google I/O conference Google released an update to Google Now which supports location based alerts. To setup a location based alert 1. Launch Google Now 2. Type or say add reminder 3. By default it shows time based alert interface, switch it location based by touching Location icon 4. Set reminder text, choose a location and touch Set reminder 5. Your alert is set now and as soon as you are close by the specified location, you’ll see an alert on your device. This is a nice feature and I’m using it quite often for the past couple of days.  There are couple of things missing from the current version of Google Now location based alerts– recurring alerts and ability to set alerts on leaving a specific location. It is not possible to recur location based alerts. You will be alerted only once as soon as you reach the location and it is not possible to repeat the alert next time you visit the location. Lets say you want to be reminded to say hi to friend’s parents whenever you are travelling close by their home. It does not work. The second missing feature is something basic and some how Google did not incorporate in their first iteration. Lets say you are at office now and you want to set up alert to pickup flowers when you leave office. Sounds like a simple use case for location based alerts right? But there is no way to set this type of alerts. Google Now alerts you as soon as you reach a location, but not when you leave a location. Do you have an Android that supports Google Now? If so what are your thoughts on location based alerts?

• Outlook 2010 Reminders - Can't dismiss or snooze.

  I seem to have encountered a zombie reminder that doesn't want to die. A few weeks ago I had an issue where I had a reminder from weeks gone by pop up in my Reminder window in Outlook 2010. Due in: 2 weeks overdue. Weird, I thought. So I did the usual 'Dismiss'. 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Weird, I thought. So I tried snoozing it. Not 2 seconds later: "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Ok, this is getting weird. Let's try 'Dismiss All'. "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Fine, fine, you win Outlook. Let's open the item and delete it. "1 Reminder, Due in **3** weeks overdue". Ah, now the previous reminder in the series is popping up. Let's delete that one too. "1 Reminder, Due in **4** weeks overdue". FUUUUU-- I ended up having to delete all past occurances of a weekly reminder before the reminder removed itself. It's now a few weeks later, and what do I see? "1 Reminder, Due in 2 weeks overdue". Does anyone know if this is a known bug in Outlook 2010 Beta, where recurring events with reminders start zombifying themselves, and won't stop reminding me they exist til I decapitate (delete) them entirely?

• Cisco 891w multiple VLAN configuration

  I'm having trouble getting my guest network up. I have VLAN 1 that contains all our network resources (servers, desktops, printers, etc). I have the wireless configured to use VLAN1 but authenticate with wpa2 enterprise. The guest network I just wanted to be open or configured with a simple WPA2 personal password on it's own VLAN2. I've looked at tons of documentation and it should be working but I can't even authenticate on the guest network! I've posted this on cisco's support forum a week ago but no one has really responded. • Outlook 2007 / 2010 Calendar: hide meetings in specific category

  Question Is there any easy way in Outlook 2007/2010 to show/hide meetings in a specific category? Preferably only for a specific view (the Month view, in this case). Note: I was almost done writing this question, adding just one more "What I've tried" option, when I found an acceptable (though imperfect) solution. Remembering this SE blog post I figured I might as well post it after all and answer it myself. And who knows, perhaps someone else has a more elegant solution. The reason for me personally is that I'd like to hide the "small, recurring meetings" like our daily stand-up meeting in the month view. I'd prefer an Outlook feature that is meant for this (there must be one for this, right?), but I'm open to workarounds or plugin suggestions as well. What I expected to find somewhere was a list of categories (with added option "No category") where you could select/deselect from which categories you'd see meetings. Something like this mock-up: What I've tried Edit "View Settings", and use a "Filter..." on categories. This has several disadvantages, the major one is that the filter only allows me to choose what I want to show, but not what I want to hide. Even if I tick all categories but one for the filter it would still hide any uncategorized meeting. Similar to 1, but then using Advanced filters. Still a bit clumsy as changing views can be up to three clicks, but this is the best solution so far (see the corresponding answer below). Creating a sub-calendar for these "small" meetings that I wish to hide. This felt a bit clumsy and like overkill, but did provide an easy "select/deselect" option to show/hide these meetings. Search for plug-ins that do this. Couldn't find one (yet).

Sometimes if I mash the ctrl+alt+windows keys randomly for a bit, the keyboard will let me type one more letter before stopping again. Sometimes the keys will open a program menu but usually not. I have even completely wiped my machine and reinstalled windows 7; the problem continues. Specs: Intel iMac (early 2006, 2.0GHz, 2MB RAM, 240GB HD) running ONLY Windows 7 Professional, 32-bit (NOT through boot camp) and using a USB keyboard (Saitek Eclipse II.) Unplugging & reconnecting keyboard does NOT fix it. Connecting a different keyboard does NOT fix it. That one won't work, either. Drivers are up-to-date. Removing and reinstalling drivers does NOT fix it. Restarting the computer does NOT fix it. In fact, when the Windows logon screen appears the keyboard won't work and neither will the icon to pull up the on-screen keyboard. My mouse can click around just fine. I can only log onto a non-password protected account. Generally, logging into as different Windows user fixes it. I can then log back on to my main user account and continue work for a few hours until it happens again. Clearing my Chrome browsing data stopped the problem from recurring for a week or so. I have already REINSTALLED Windows 7 (not just a restore.) The problem returned after 2 days of use. I use Avira free antivirus software, and repeated scans turn up nothing fishy. I suspect it is related to something in Google Chrome because I used my google account to reload all my previous Chrome extensions, saved data, etc. (Chrome Extensions Installed: AdBlock, Better Google Tasks, DropBox, FB Photo Zoom, Google Mail Checker, StayFocusd.) Any ideas? Any at all?

• Is it possible to get CCM Updates Schedule using Powershel or VBScript?

  I want to be able to check the CCM Updates Schedule as seen in Configuration Manager Updates tab. I've been looking around on google and I've not been able to find a consistent answer to this. I tried to create a COM object using UDA.CCMUpdatesDeployment. This allows me to successfully set the recurring schedule with SetUserDefinedSchedule method. If I try to use GetUserDefinedSchedule I only get the original values of the variables. • Windows 7 Loading Very Slow

  Hi guys, I've had a problem that only started to occur yesterday. When I boot into Windows 7 and log on to my user account, the computer gets very laggy and slow for at least 5 minutes. Icons take ages to load, and everything is rendered unclickable. This happens for about five minutes after which everything goes back to normal. I tried restarting a few times to see if this is a recurring problem, and it is. I ran a full system scan with Microsoft Security Essentials and found nothing wrong, and I also defragmented the disk to increase performance. However, the problem still exists. Edit: For the past day, I've been trying to install Ubuntu on the same laptop. When installing it on a partition didn't work, I decided to use Wubi. Could this somehow be the problem? Also, my hard drive gets hot a lot, so could the heat be affecting the hard drive and maybe making it defective? Any help on this issue would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

• Regular issue with keys on temp tables

  We run a large forum with lots of reads and writes, particularly to the posts and topics tables which are both innodb. Last week I started doing 12 hourly backups with innobackupex because mysqldump just takes forever (7+ million rows in posts table.) It seems that something doesn't like these backups because I have a recurring problem every other day. The symptoms; The front page of the site starts throwing errors The logs start showing errors like Error: 126 - Incorrect key file for table '/tmp/mysql/#sql_4e87_14.MYI'; try to repair it The /tmp/ dir fills up and we start getting Error: 1030 - Got error 28 from storage engine in the logs. The only way to fix is to optimize table on each of the posts and topics tables. I'm trying all I can to stop MySQL using disks for temp tables, but I'd have more problems than this if it used all my memory also. Update 1: Despite the conf looking like there is replication, there isn't. This is a stand alone instance.

• Alternative software for Pinnacle PCTV 100e

  I have a Pinnacle PCTV 100e external USB cable television receiver. I've been using Pinnacle's software that came with the card (TVCenter Pro) to record things at given times. Things I don't like is an extremely high CPU load, and that it doesn't seem to halt the screensaver from running when watching in full screen. Also, I was away the last two weeks, and the schedules went terribly bust. Some items were recorded hours before or after the actual scheduled time (and now I missed some shows), and some recurring schedules weren't converted into the next occurrence correctly! Is there good alternative software that would work with my PCTV 100e? (Preferalby cheap or free) I've tried VLC Player, which gets video, but no audio. I've tried MediaPortal, which crashes when trying to scan for channels. When I select a channel manually, the stored mpg has big errors in encoding and is also missing audio. There's VirtualDub, but that doesn't have ready-made scheduled-recording options. This I can conjure some scheduled scripts for, but I've noticed the sync gets awfully wrong after some time. I've tried Windows Media Center, but it doesn't seem to support the PCTV 100e.

• Calendar booking issue - Exchange 2003 and 2010

  In our organization we are running Exchange 2003 and 2010 simultaneously, with the hopes of migrating everyone to Exchange 2010 sometime within the next few months. Everyone is using Outlook 2010. Recently, we had an issue with transaction log storage on the Exchange 2003 server. This was resolved, but for some reason no meeting rooms on the Exchange 2003 server will automatically book meetings any longer. I have played around with this for a while, changing calendar permissions, turning resource scheduling off and back on, etc. No dice. My next step was to try migrating a resource to the Exchange 2010 server. After doing so, and setting it up as a Room, enabling Auto-Accept and removing the EnableDirectBooking registry entry on my PC, I can book a meeting with this room. If EnableDirectBooking is enabled, I get an error message stating: "Meeting Room" declined your meeting because it is recurring. You must book each meeting separately with this resource. This is despite the fact that the meeting I'm attempting to create has no recurrence. Now, I have also created a new test Room from scratch on the Exchange 2010 server, and I can book a meeting with this Room regardless of whether or not I have the EnableDirectBooking reg entry in place. All users here have this registry entry, and I'd rather not have to figure out how to push something out to remove it from every PC. Rather, I'd like to figure out what's different between the configurations of these two meeting rooms so that I could book a meeting room regardless of whether EnableDirectBooking is enabled or not. Any ideas, anyone? Thanks!

  Hello, I currently own a domain bought via GoDaddy.com, which provides me a basic email setup for the most common needs. I configured it to forward all mail to [email protected] to [email protected]. I also own a virtual server with a running Postfix that I use for a specific website (all mail to somedomain.com gets forwarded via LMTP to a program written by me). Since I'm recently experiencing some harassing by spammers, since GoDaddy doesn't seem to filter spam, and since my Windows Phone's Pocket Outlook cannot filter spam, I would like to use SpamAssassin to filter inbound spam by changing my domain's MX records to my server My ideal setup is the following: All mail delivered to somedomain.com gets redirected via LMTP as usual via virtual transport without any spam check All mail to [email protected] gets redirected to [email protected] after a severe spam check I don't care about [email protected] since I use just one address for now I would like to train SpamAssassin with customized spam rules, possibly based on the presence of certain keywords (links to certain unsubscribe pages I found recurring) I currently configured Postfix with transport somedomain.com lmtp:[127.0.0.1]:8025 .somedomain.com error: Cannot accept mail for this domain relay somedomain.com OK (I guess I should add mydomain.com OK too) virtual @mydomain.com [email protected] (looks like a catch-all rule, it's OK as requirement 3) I installed SpamAssassin, I can do rcspamd start and set it to boot with the server, but I don't know if there is anything else to do for use in Postfix, and how to apply requirement 1 (only mail to mydomain.com gets filtered) I also tried to send an email via Telnet to make sure my settings are ready for MX change. I received the message into my account but I found that it gone through secureserver.net, like Postfix didn't rewrite the destination but simply relayed the message. Thank you in advance. • Remote paging with Nagios when network is down and email won't work -- cellular modems and alternatives

  What is the best option for remote paging when network services are down? I'm looking for a solution that can let me know when network services are down during off-hours only, and especially when email/smtp services are out. Therefore, it needs to be redundant to our network and power supply. I'm imagining a cellular modem is one option. What's the price range for these? Is anybody using them and feel that they are worth the cost? I'm imagining that it's something we would end up sending an emergency page ~ 1x/month at most, so I'd like the pricing to reflect that--I don't mind a high per-page cost as long as it has a low recurring cost. Another option would be to expose at least one server to remote ping, and run a check script on a remote server. Are there paid options for this? Currently, we run Nagios on a Linux VM on a Windows 2008 Hyper-V host. It would be great if the solution would work in that environment, but I know it's tricky with external devices, and we could move Nagios to a standalone workstation if needed.

• How can I get multiple video cards to work on linux?

  I installed fedora 12. I have 2 ATI cards that I used to use on windows to run 4 monitors. A recurring problem has been to get them detected in linux. Only my secondary card is picked up linux. When I manage the displays it detects the 2 monitors connected that card. What are the specific steps I should take to get the second card detected? Supposedly there is a tool system-config-xfree. I don't have it, yum can't find it. Also I heard it has something to do with editing some xorg.conf file or something to that effect. I have absolutely no idea how to find the "bus id" of my card, or lookup the horizontal refresh rates, etc.. I would probably have no problem following the documentation & editing the file if I knew a good way to find these values. Someone also suggested installing linux twice and saving the xorg.conf it generates each time (with different card each time) and then merging the two by hand. That is like killing a fly with a hammer though, when I do this again and again in the future It'd be nice to not have to take twice as long. Thanks

• Pc freezes then wont boot. The fans spin, but HDD activity light is off

  I'm having a problem with my PC and this isn't the first time it's happened. For a few days now, when I turned my PC on, it didn't immediately start to boot up. The monitor said "No signal" and the machine just sat there although the power light was on and the fans were running. Then, after a few minutes, it would begin to boot as if nothing was wrong. Today I started my machine and it ran ok for about 10 minutes. Then the whole thing froze up and I had to shut it down and restart by holding the power button. When it rebooted, the same thing happened again and again and now finally it wont boot up at all. This happened before about 8 months ago. I ended up taking it to the shop after getting a blue screen. They replaced the HDD and upgraded it to windows 7 and it has worked fine since then. However, they charged an arm and a leg for the work and I dont want to have to go back there again. As this is a recurring fault I figure its a mechanical problem of some sort but I'm not sure what. Any ideas? Thanks for your help.
