  • I know the big picture but can't put it in place

    Hi, I'm interested in web development and by that I mean the bigger projects like facebook or twitter. I know the basics of java, css, php and mysql. I know there is a lot more out there. I read about it. But I don't know what the purpose is and how to put in place. Things like: Scribe, thrift, casandra, Unix/Linux, shell/perl/python scripting, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, non-relational NoSQL datastores, JVM, nginx I want to know why they need it, how they use it and what te purpose is. What I need is a book like technical background of facebook for dummies or so. Are there any books or websites that explain this from scratch? Thank you!

    When to use <strong> and when to use <b> or other ways to give look of bold? strong has semantic value ( and useful for screen reader while b is presentation (and even valid in HTML 5). my question is not what is the difference between strong and b. The question is when to use semantic tag and when to use just to make text bold Should I always use <strong> if client's content files (MS word files) has some words bold in content paragraphs? How can we know when client want to give emphasis to text and when he just want to make text bold for presentation/aesthetic purpose? If it's client job to tell us, then how to explain this scenario to client to give us clear info on "when he just want to make text bold for presentation/aesthetic purpose" ?

  • sqrt(int_value + 0.0) ? The point?

    Hello, while doing some homework in my very strange C++ book, which I've been told before to throw away, had a very peculiar code segment. I know homework stuff always throws in extra "mystery" to try to confuse you like indenting 2 lines after a single-statement for-loop. But this one I'm confused on because it seems to serve some real-purpose. basically it is like this: int counter=10; ... if(pow(floor(sqrt(counter+0.0)),2) == counter) ... I'm interested in this part especially: sqrt(counter+0.0) Is there some purpose to the +0.0? Is this the poormans way of doing a static cast to a double? Does this avoid some compiler warning on some compiler I do not use? The entire program printed the exact same thing and compiled without warnings on g++ whenever I left out the +0.0 part. Maybe I'm not using a weird enough compiler?

  • JVM specification and Java compiler code useful for SCJP preparation ?

    I'm preparing the SCJP exam with the almost official study book ("SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Exam 310-065") I understand that Java programming is writting code that fulfills a certain high-level contract; So that Java can stay platform-independent. However, I have trouble understanding and remembering things when it comes to highly specific SCJP items (and they are numerous) The book stays high-level and does not provide examples of how one compiler would handle things. This is the same thing for runtime issues (JVM level): things are too much abstract for me. Rules often seems arbitrary and therefore, with no well defined purpose, are difficult to remember. Or maybe it's that sometimes I just don't get the underlying purpose. And here is the question: Would a JVM specification and/or some java compiler code help in preparing the SCJP? Have you had the need for such material or is the book sufficient enough? Also, please share the resources you used, apart from the book.

  • Using custom HTML attributes for JavaScript purposes?

    One of my colleagues doesn't like to use HTML classes and ids for javascript/jQuery purpose. Therefore I've seen that he had created custom html attribute such as <div id="myid" class="cssClasses ..." [some-purpose-id]="mycustomId">...</div> I asked him if it was really a good idea and he replied that he considers that classes and Ids should be reserved for styling. Personally, I would have used classes. Some classes would have been used for styling, and some other classes would have been used for programming (jQuery selectors). The idea is to keep things appart also. And of course jQuery could set styling classes but if possible not use them for selection. Of course I also use id when appropriate but since an id is unique on a page, I like to do generic stuff using classes. I would like to know you opinions on the better approach (if there is one).   • Form submission and hyperlinks using GET and POST

    I have a search resource, the user can perform searches by filling out a form and submitting it, the create action is called, the Search is saved, the show action is called, and the results are displayed. This all happens with the default POST, and all works fine. The user may want to save his search in the saved_search table (i don't use the Search table for this purpose as this table stores all searches for the purpose of compiling statistics, and gets cleared on a regular basis). Once the Search is saved, it can be re-run by clicking a hyperlink, this is where i start to get problems. I see no way of getting my hyperlink to run the create action of Search, with a POST request, and the necessary data. I then decided to try to get both form submission and the hyperlink to perform a search using a GET request, i was unable to get form_for to run my Search create action using a GET request, it always seems to get routed to my index action. Can someone suggest a good restful solution to this problem please. Many thanks

  • How to store a 250mb database in an Offline Web App

    Ok, maybe i'm not seeing the whole picture or something, but i kinda need a brainstorm. So the purpose is to make a webapp (HTML5, CSS, Javascript) that has to search on a 250mb database without any internet connection, so.. yes the database has to be on the client side. The hard part here is, this App has to work on an iPod or iPhone without internet connection. (An initial connection to download the App is ok), LocalStorage has a 5mb limit, couchDB would be great since they have an webapp easily accessed by Javascript (privacy concerns don't matter at this point), so i'm pretty much out of ideas.... Does anyone see an alternative, or solution for the purpose?

  • significance of index name in creating an index (mySQL)

    I've done something like this in order to use on duplicate key update: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX blah on mytable(my_col_to_make_an_index); and its worked just fine. I'm just not sure what the purpose of the index name is -- in this case 'blah'. The stuff I've read says to use one but I can't fathom why. It doesn't seem to be used in queries, although I can see it if I export the schema. So ... what purpose does the index name serve? If it helps the line in the CREATE TABLE ends up looking like: UNIQUE KEY `clothID` (`clothID`)

  • Installing trunk Mono on Ubuntu

    I am quite new to linux. I have to install Mono on a linux machine from souce code. I know the general method: read-instructions, install-dependencies, ./configure, make, make install. However this approach doesn't fit into the general Ubuntu package management routine. Other programs I install from .debs won't be able to notice the version of Mono. Also I can't remove Mono using standard Ubuntu package management tools. Is there an easy solution? I have seen that Ubuntu actually has several separate packages for the Mono project. Should I build packages from Mono? How can I follow the same conventions as the ubuntu packagers? Where should I look for info on packaging? Can you give step by step instructions? Thanks!

I'm looking to set up central performance monitoring of some boxes. 2K3 TS ( Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) 2K8 R2 ( XenApp 6 = Monitor General OS Perf & Session Specific Counters ) File Server ( Standard File I/O ) My ultimate aim is to get as many counters/information, without impacting the clients session experience at all. Including counters specific to their sessions. I was thinking it logging directly to a SQL on another server, instead of a two part process of blg file then relog to sql. Would that work ok? Does anyone know the overhead of going straight to SQL from the client? I've searched around a bit, but havent found so much information it can be overwhelming. thanks

    To Clarify: my question is why isn't my password policy applying to people in the domain. Hey guys, having trouble with our password policy in Active Directory. Sometimes it just helps me to type out what I’m seeing It appears to not be applying properly across the board. I am new to this environment and AD in general but I think I have a general grasp of what should be going on. It’s a pretty simple AD setup without too many Group Policies being applied.   • Why would image thumbnails not be showing in all search engines in all browsers?

    For over a week now, when I search for a word at Google, it correctly gives me some preview image thumbnails: But when I click on "images", it doesn't show me any thumbnails: The same thing happens at Bing.com, when I search Bing itself it gives me some thumbnails on the general search result page: But when I click on "images", it doesn't show me any thumbnails: The same thing happens at Yahoo: If I click on one of the broken thumbnails, it shows me the picture fine: Thumbnails at youtube also work fine: It seems each search engine is hanging on different URLs as shown above: t1.gstatic.com ts3.mm.bing.net thm-a02.yimg.com so it doesn't seem to be the problem of one specific URL not sending thumbnails, it is just a problem with search engine image thumbnails in general. Also, this happens in every browser I try: Explorer, Firefox, Chrome. What could be the problem? Is it my computer, some setting somewhere, my router, my Internet provider (T-Online, Germany)? Has anyone ever had this problem and solved it?

  • VMWare Workstation Performance

    Hi there, awhile ago I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 x64 from Windows XP 32 bit edition. However not before virtualizing the physical installation and I continue to run it under VMWare Workstation today. The performance on the resulting VM is just absolutely atrocious! I've done a lot of uninstalling stuff that's not longer needed since the machine is virtual in an effort to reduce RAM, but in general the responsiveness seems sluggish. I also run the Virtual Machine on it's own separate HD that is seldom used by the host OS. I'm just hoping for some general tips in increasing VMWare performance anywhere, thoughts? EDIT: Both of the below answers were excellent starting points for me. However I did like the selected answer's strategies on disk management. I am running the Virtual Machine in a separate external hard disk, likely I'm going to have to reconfigure somehow. Thanks all!

  • Linux (Kubuntu 9.10): Strange DNS problem [seems to be IPv6 issue]

    Hi, I'm experiencing strange problems with my Kubuntu 9.10 when doing DNS requests from various applications. The requests are extremely slow, so loading any pages in Firefox or Konqueror, doing package installations in Kpackagemanager and other apps is really painful, while for example Opera doesnt have any problems, and ping is normally fast as well for DNS pings. I checked the proxy settings of both the used applications as well as of the general system and there are none, so to me it doesn't seem as there was something inbetween.. Does anybody have an idea on what to check for possible problem sources or how to solve this ? I'm behind a DSL home router which does the DHCP (and works well with my other computer). Any kind of advice would be really helpful. Edit: It seems to be some kind of IPv6 problem, as I could get it to work by disabling IPv6 explicitly in Firefox. Is there a general solution to this ?

    Hello, I was just wondering what other CPU architectures are available other than INTEL & AMD. So, found List of CPU architectures on Wikipedia. It categorizes notable CPU architectures into following categories. Embedded CPU architectures Microcomputer CPU architectures Workstation/Server CPU architectures Mini/Mainframe CPU architectures Mixed core CPU architectures I was analyzing the purposes and have few doubts. I taking Microcomputer CPU (PC) architecture as reference and comparing others. Embedded CPU architecture: They are a completely new world. Embedded systems are small & do very specific task mostly real time & low power consuming so we do not need so many & such wide registers available in a microcomputer CPU (typical PC). In other words we do need a new small & tiny architecture. Hence new architecture & new instruction RISC. The above point also clarifies why do we need a separate operating system (RTOS). Workstation/Server CPU architectures I don't know what is a workstation. Someone clarify regarding the workstation. As of the server. It is dedicated to run a specific software (server software like httpd, mysql etc.). Even if other processes run we need to give server process priority therefore there is a need for new scheduling scheme and thus we need operating system different than general purpose one. If you have any more points for the need of server OS please mention. But I don't get why do we need a new CPU Architecture. Why cant Microcomputer CPU architecture do the job. Can someone please clarify? Mini/Mainframe CPU architectures Again I don't know what are these & what miniframes or mainframes used for? I just know they are very big and occupy complete floor. But I never read about some real world problems they are trying to solve. If any one working on one of these. Share your knowledge. Can some one clarify its purpose & why is it that microcomputer CPU archicture not suitable for it? Is there a new kind of operating system for this too? Why?   • How do you cache web pages with a personalized header using caching reverse proxy such as Squid, Var

    Pretty much every page of my website is dynamically generated. However they don't change that frequently (kinda similar to a forum page). So I'd like to cache them using a caching reverse proxy such as Squid, varnish or Nginx. The problem is that for my logged-in users, each of them will see a personalized header saying "Welcome John Doe. Logout" on the upper right corner of the page (just like serverfault). While users who aren't logged in will see a header that says "Login" instead. So basically even though every user will see the same page in general, they all slightly different version due to that personalized header. Is there any way so that I can cache the "main" part of the page and serve it from cache while generate the personalized header dynamically for each individual user? This must be a very common problem. How is it solved in general?
