• How do I install Gyachi on PPC Ubuntu 12.04.1?

  So I'm trying to install Gyachi on my iMac G5 runnig Ubuntu 12.04.1 but I can't seem to find a package that works on powerpc interface. I did find some powerpc enterprise Linux.rpm builds on the internet but I have no idea how to install them. This is the lin: http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/epel/5/ppc/gyachi-1.1.71-5.el5.ppc.html Does anyone know how to install that, or would it work? Is there any Skype alternative that has both audio and video for Ubuntu? In my knowledge, Gyachi is the only one that at least does both audio and video for Yahoo.

• MVC helper functions business logic

  I am creating some helper functions (mvc.net) for creating common controls that I need in almost every project such as alert boxes, dialogs etc. If these do not contain any business logic and it's just client side code (html, js) then it's ok. My problem arises when I need some business logic behind this helper. I want to create a 'rate my (web) application' control that will be visible every 3 days and the user may hide it for now, navigate to rate link or hide it for ever. To do this I need some sort of database access and a code that acts as business logic. Normally I would use a controller for this, with my DI and everything, but I don't know where to put this code now. This should be placed in the helper function or in a controller that responds objects instead of ActionResults?

As Scott Allen writes in his OdeToCode blog: One scenario I haven't found addressed very well is the scenario where multiple apps exist in the same greater web application and require some shared code on the client. Are there any recommended approaches to take, pitfalls to avoid, or good sample structures of this scenario that you can point to?

• gnome-file-share-properties doesn't work

  I've configured gnome-file-share-properties on all my Ubuntu's PC for sharing the directory Public to each other. I following some guide found on Internet for the configuration of it, all explain the same procedure but in my case I don't see any Public directory shared with the PC. Following this link http://library.gnome.org/users/gnome-user-share/stable/gnome-user-share-getting-started.html.en I'd see the directory Public plus the name of PC that shares its directory on Nautilus Places. In my case I don't see anything, therefore on the Network place see all the machines 'n if I try to click on one receive this: "DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" note: I don't want to use Samba because I've all Ubuntu PC, and the firewall is disabled on all PC.

• Confusion with Libgdx UI

  I've started with Libgdx and am currently stumbling about trying to understand how to set up the interface. I have generated the base projects in Eclipse ( < proj-name ,< proj-name -android, < proj-name -desktop, < proj-name -html), and can get the program to display a simple background, play a looping sound file, and draw a tank. I have been having some problems implementing the UI though. I want to make a collapsible interface bar at the bottom of the screen that would contain buttons for movement, and selecting weapons. I'm confused since there appears to be several ways of doing this and the documentation (or tutorials explaining it) tend to be obsolete. How would one go about this? Use a stage for the bar and actors for the widgets? I'm a little lost on this.

• Is "PHP and MySQL Web Development, 4th ed." an outdated book to learn from?

  I want to get into web stuff, and thought of going with PHP+MySQL. I have experience in C#, C++, desktop graphics, but no web stuff besides HTML, CSS which I started learning 2 months ago. On SO PHP-book question, the highest rated book is "PHP Objects, Patterns and Practice". However, I'm not sure if it's a book to start PHP with... or is it? Most of the books mentioned in that SO question seem to be for those who already know PHP. I considered "PHP & MySQL Web Development, 4th Ed.", but someone mentioned that "it uses the mysql_* functions which are almost deprecated." Help?

• How to modify Dreamweaver's SpryMenuBar.js to send a msgbox on what menu was clicked?

  I have a simple HTML webpage made in Dreamweaver with a SpryMenuBar. When I click on a menu item, I want to send a pop up message box that says which menu item was clicked. (This is not really my objective but once I can learn to hook into the spry java script with a mouse click listener I can try to do what I am really after.) The problem is for some reason I can't seem to get started with this seemingly simple task. Does anybody know how to revise the SpryMenuBar.js to make a msgbox showing the item that was clicked? For example if I click a menu that say's 'Contact us', I wan't to throw a message box that says "You pressed, Contact us". Note: My final objective is to actually call another function that changes text in the center of my page, depending on what menu item was clicked.

And I suggest (strongly) that you also download the free Extension Pack from the same page... Brings USB 2.0 emulation and more!I upgraded the version on my Solaris Express (get that from : http://www.oracle.com/solaris/index.html and follow the Download Solaris Express link on the right) laptop (pfexec pkgrm SUNWvbox and then pfexec pkgadd -d the .pkg in the compressed archive file, and install the extensions from the VBox GUI once it's launched). If you are on an old fashion OS without proper RBAC, replace pfexec by sudo. Which you can also do on Solaris if you really want to. :)I tell you, it's Christmas, for sure!Merry VBox!Gilles.

  I am using enchantJS and would like to use the letters and numbers as well as numpad on a keyboard to do different things (eg: hotkeys). By default, the directions are bound to the arrow keys. Any of the six buttons may also be bound to any key with an ASCII value. We’ll address that later. So enchant provides the ability to bind keys to different input such as up, down, left, right...but how can I simply check whether the D or X key was pressed, and if so, perform certain actions based on that event?

To clarify a bit, when you create a website in PHP that outputs HTML its target is the browser and by extension the human being reading the page in the browser. A web service is not targeted at humans but rather at other programs. SOAP and REST are two ways of creating WebServices. Correct me if i am wrong? What are other ways i can create a WebService? What does it mean fully RESTful web Application?

• LuaJit FFI and hiding C implementation details

  I would like to extend an application using LuaJit FFI. Having seen http://luajit.org/ext_ffi_tutorial.html this is surprisingly easy when comparing this to the Lua C API. So far so good. However I do not plainly want to wrap C functions but provide a higher level API to users writing scripts for the application. Especially I do not want users to be able to access "primitives", i.e. the ffi.* namespace. Is this possible or will that ffi namespace be available to user's Lua scripts? On the issue of Sandboxing Lua I found http://lua-users.org/wiki/SandBoxes which is not talking about FFI though. Furthermore, the plan I have described above is assuming that the introduction of abstraction layers happens on the lua side of code. Is this an advisable approach or would you rather abstract functionality on the statically compiled code (on the C-side)?

  Alright so I've had Linux Ubuntu 12.04 for over a year now and I still don't know anything about it. That only thing I can do with it is use the internet. I want to start streaming games that I play on my computer to Twitch.tv., but I don't know how. All of the downloads are only for windows. I found a website that tells you how to do it, but since I know nothing about linux, I can't do it. I haven't been able to get past the first step yet. • On Golf Tournaments & Installers

  I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents. However, now there's a new official tutorial, for the first time: http://platform.netbeans.org/tutorials/nbm-nbi.html The above is focused on Ant builds and Windows, specifically, and doesn't cover Maven scenarios, for which there'll be a separate tutorial soon. • New Look for Geekswithblogs.net Homepage

  I wanted to alert everyone to the new look of the Geekswithblogs.net Community Page.  I removed the tabs, cleaned up the posts and fonts, replaced the logo with our brighter logo, and mucked with the CSS and HTML to drive a smaller footprint.  With this update, the homepage is now HALF THE SIZE in KBs!  I still have some more AJAX calls I want to implement to make the footprint even smaller. Let me know what you think.  I feel it is easier to read through the posts now.

• Webm videos converted with avconv not working properly

  I'm converting mp4 videos to webm with the following command: avconv -i INPUT.mp4 -c:v libvpx -qmin 10 -qmax 42 -maxrate 500k -bufsize 1000k -threads 2 -c:a libvorbis OUTPUT.webm Am I doing something wrong? Should I use all of these parameters? I just want to make the videos compatible with all the browsers/devices. The videos are not working on Firefox on most devices and on Chrome in a specific Android device that I have. EDIT: When i play the embeded videos on firefox, on any android device, it goes straight to the end and doesn't play. It only plays if i click in the progress bar. If i open the videos on firefox without embedding them in a html page, they seem to have a bigger width box outside then, while the video is inside it. I uploaded a video that i converted. • Are there any open source projects for car engine sound simulation?

  I have been thinking how to create realistic sound for a car. The main sound is the engine, then all kind of wind, road and suspension sounds. Are there any open source projects for the engine sound simulation? Simply pitching up the sample does not sound too great. The ideal would be to something that allows me to pick type of the engine (i.e. inline-4 vs v-8), add extras like turbo/supercharger whine and finally set the load and rpm. One of the things that it is supposed to be able to do is pass the keyword as a URL parameter using the code {keyword} in the URL. I set it up for integration with Google Analytics such the landing URLs would look like: http://example.com/landing.html?utm_source=adwords&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=%7Bkeyword%7D&utm_content=my_content&utm_campaign=my_page where {keyword} is in the utm_term parameter. Hower, this keyword substitution isn't happening. Why?

  I have problem with Google Chrome and Theora video. I have video that plays nice in Opera and Firefox. However, it doesn't play in Google browser and I don't know why. I am not interested in encoding in WebM or h.264, this time. I am not asking what is the best way to publish video on a website. I only do experiments with Ogg Theora.
