• Are these advanced/unfair interview questions regarding Java concurrency?

  Here are some questions I've recently asked interviewees who say they know Java concurrency: Explain the hazard of "memory visibility" - the way the JVM can reorder certain operations on variables that are unprotected by a monitor and not declared volatile, such that one thread may not see the changes made by another thread. Usually I ask this one by showing code where this hazard is present (e.g. the NoVisibility example in Listing 3.1 from "Java Concurrency in Practice" by Goetz et al) and asking what is wrong. Explain how volatile affects not just the actual variable declared volatile, but also any changes to variables made by a thread before it changes the volatile variable. Why might you use volatile instead of synchronized? Implement a condition variable with wait() and notifyAll(). Explain why you should use notifyAll(). Explain why the condition variable should be tested with a while loop. My question is - are these appropriate or too advanced to ask someone who says they know Java concurrency? And while we're at it, do you think that someone working in Java concurrency should be expected to have an above-average knowledge of Java garbage collection?

I would like to know if gradual small modifications of games to enhance the sense of improvement and learning by users is known/common/standard practice in game developing. (I don't mean to say that there is anything wrong with such a practice.)

• Installing 10.04 server on HP xw9400 Workstation with RAID 5

  I have a workstation that was given to me that is a friggen powerhouse, so I figured I would set it up as my development and demo server. This is my first experience installing Ubuntu onto a RAID array and so far it has not been a fun one. I have been following the Advanced Installation guide for installing Ubuntu 10.04 server, and it says that there will be an option on the Partition Disks screen to manually create the partitions, but the only options I have are: Configure iSCSI volumes Undo changes to partitions Finish partitioning and write changes to disk Just before I got to that screen I got a message that said: One or more drives containing Serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices? It doesn't matter whether I answer yes or no to that, I still get the same Partition Disks screen. When I try to select Finish partitioning and write changes to disk I just get the No root file system error. Has anyone else experienced this, and how do I get past it? Can I not run Ubuntu on this machine?

One thing I discovered today while breaking apart some dates was that the javascript getDate() returns the day of the month 1-31 as you would expect but the getMonth() returns 0-11… definitely not what I expected!!

• What do light purple color mean in uTorrent

  I run uTorrent 3.1.2 in my Windows 7 PC. When I download one file, I see some purple colored lines under Files Tab Pieces. Below is an image of what I am telling (little resized); I think that the light green color indicates downloaded parts. But I have no idea about purple lines. The file is a streamable mp3 file. The connection speed is very low, about 5KB/s down and 1KB/s up. The done file size is not progressing in a smooth way (usually changes in KB are visible), it stays as it is for sometime and then changes to a size (changes in MB), and again the same thing. Questions: Why does this happen? What does the purple color mean? Thank you.

  I am currently working on a source code generation tool. To make sure that my changes do no introduce any new bugs, a diff between the output of the program before and after my changes would theoretically be a valuable tool. However, this turns out to be harder than one might think, because the tool outputs lines where the order does not matter (like import statements, function declarations, …) in a semi-randomly ordered way. Because of this, the output of diff is cluttered with many changes that are in fact only lines moved to another position in the same file. Is there a way to make diff ignore these moves and only output the lines that have really been added or removed?

• Django - Moving database from development to production servers

  I am working on a Django project with a MySQL backend. I'm curious about the best way to update a production server's database to reflect the changes made on the development server's database? When I develop now, I make some changes to a models.py file, then to a schemamigration using South. Sometimes I do several migrations across several apps within the main project folder before it's ready for the production database. This means that there are several migration files in the app/migrations/ folder created by South. So on the production server, how does one update the database to reflect all the changes made in development, without having any data loss?

• Excel 2010 started changing my numbers

  If I type in a 16 digit number (format: number, no decimals) it changes the number on me. Example: 1234567812345678 changes the view to 1234567812345670. If I type it in as a general format it changes the numbers above so it displays 1.23457E+15 but if you click on the cell, the display shows the last digit as a 0 instead of an 8 once again. I opened the file on a different computer and same issue now with it. I have changed the auto correcting and auto formating all to no avail. Help!

• Non-responsive mouse and keyboard fix

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 and found that after about 20 minutes of work that my mouse and keyboard became very unresponsive. So I found the following fix: sudo -i To test if this is the problem: echo N> /sys/module/drm_kms_helper/parameters/poll To make the fix permanent: echo "options drm_kms_helper poll=N">/etc/modprobe.d/local.conf It appears that the fix does work, but what does this do? Am I breaking something else in doing this?

• Can I disable OS X Lion Autosave and Versions?

  OK I'm going there: I want to turn off a new feature in OS X that's so infuriating I could swear it was designed by Microsoft, namely, Autosave / Versions. I just don't want it. I have a workflow that involves my trigger finger on cmd-S, I use my own VCS when necessary, I save as compulsively and I open applications like TextEdit and Preview as temporary notepads without wanting any changes saved automatically and without a stupid unlock dialog that then records my changes when I only want to see the changes and not record them. So: please tell me how I can turn off Versions without rolling back to 10.6, and you will be my new personal hero. Thanks! PS: Just asking how to disable, not for a discussion of the pros and cons of the features.

This complicated the review process and made conversations isolated and difficult to track. When you view a pull request, you’ll now see “Comments” and “Changes” tabs, with current comments displayed. Inline Diff Enhancements We tweaked the inline diff experience to make it easier to traverse diff blocks. When you open up the inline diff experience, you’ll now see up and down arrows. To move between the diff blocks, you can use those arrows or utilize the available keyboard shortcuts. • Do we ethically have the right to use the MAC Address for verification purposes?

  I am writing a program, or starting at the very beginning of it, and I am thinking of purchase verification systems as a final step. I will be catering to Macs, PCs, and possibly Linux if all is said and done. I will also be programming this for smartphones as well using C++ and Objective-C. (I am writing a blueprint before going head first into it) That being said, I am not asking for help on doing it yet, but what I’m looking for is a realistic measurement for what could be expected as a viable and ethical option for purchase verification systems. Apple through the Apple Store, and some other stores out there have their own "You bought it" check. I am looking to use a three prong verification system. Email/password 16 to 32 character serial number using alpha/numeric and symbols with Upper and lowercase variants. MAC Address. The first two are in my mind ok, but I have to ask on an ethical standpoint, is a MAC Address to lock the software to said hardware unethical, or is it smart? I understand if an Ethernet card changes if not part of the logic board, or if the logic board changes so does the MAC address, so if that changes it will have to be re-verified, but I have to ask with how everything is today... Is it ethical to actually use the MAC address as a validation key or no? Should I be forward with this kind of verification system or should I keep it hidden as a secret? Yes I know hackers and others will find ways of knowing what I am doing, but in reality this is why I am asking. I know no verification is foolproof, but making it so that its harder to break is something I've always been interested in, and learning how to program is bringing up these questions, because I don't want to assume one thing and find out it's not really accepted in the programming world as a "you shouldn't do that" maneuver... Thanks in advance... I know this is my first programming question, but I am just learning how to program, and I am just making sure I'm not breaking some ethical programmer credo I shouldn't...

• BackupPC - are full backups really full when using rsync?

  Hi, When you run a full backup in backuppc and you use rsync as the transfer method, does it actually transfer the full backup source? Or does it only transfer the changes? The docs seem to imply that it would transfer the full thing and only an incremental would transfer the changes. If this is the case, could I simply use incrementals only, and never do a full backup? The way the backups are stored (using hard links to make each incremental appear full), I would think that this would be the best method. Incrementals will only transfer the changes, yet each backup will appear full. Thanks.

  How can a voxel terrain (marching cubes) be textured without triplanar mapping ? The goal being to have more artistic freedom. I think, I could unwrap the mesh while extracting the isosurface then use projective painting. But I do not know how to handle terrain modifications without breaking the texture. I also guess that virtual texturing could help here. Links for these matters would be appreciated.

  We just released the first service pack for the Q1 2010 release of Telerik Extensions for ASP.NET MVC. As you may have guessed this is mostly a maintenance release addressing all reported bugfixes.   The Ksplice team is happy to announce the public availability of one of our git repositories, RedPatch. RedPatch contains the source for all of the changes Red Hat makes to their kernel, one commit per fix and we've published it on oss.oracle.com/git. With RedPatch, you can access the broken-out patches using git, browse them online via gitweb, and freely redistribute the source under the terms of the GPL. This is the same policy we provide for Oracle Linux and the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK). Users can freely access the source, view the commit logs and easily identify the changes that are relevant to their environments. To understand why we've created this project we'll need a little history. In early 2011, Red Hat changed how they released their kernel source, going from a tarball that had individual patch files to shipping the kernel source as one giant tarball with a single patch for all Red Hat-introduced changes. For most people who work in the kernel this is merely an inconvenience; driver developers and other out-of-kernel module developers can see the end result to make sure their module still performs as expected. For Ksplice, we build individual updates for each change and rely on source patches that are broken-out, not a giant tarball. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to take the right patches to create individual updates for each fix, and to skip over the noise — like a change that speeds up bootup — which is unnecessary for an already-running system. We’ve been taking the monolithic Red Hat patch tarball and breaking it into smaller commits internally ever since they introduced this change. At Oracle, we feel everyone in the Linux community can benefit from the work we already do to get our jobs done, so now we’re sharing these broken-out patches publicly. • Wordpress redirects to itself endlessly

  I've just upgraded to last version (2.9.1) from kinda late version (2.2.1). After the upgrade I've realized that you cannot access wordpress from my .com domain, however it is possible via other subdomain! db-he.110mb.com works fine while http://www.db-he.com doesn't. That both redirect to the same server, and configurations are fine. However you cannot surf index.php (which is wordpress'). www.db-he.com/index.php is doing a permanent redirect to www.db-he.com/index.php for some reason. Problem is with wordpress only. All other files works fine. For example, changes.txt can be accessed from both links: www.db-he.com/changes.txt db-he.110mb.com/changes.txt For some reason, it seems more a server problem than a wordpress problem. What can I do?

• How to track site visitors across several browser sessions or computers using Google Analytics?

  If a site visitor clears cookies, uses various browsers or computers then Google Analytics will have a hard time detecting them as being by the same user. However since 95% of the site content is only available when logged in, so I should be able to identify multiple visits as the same user so long as they log in. How can I identify to Google that the visits are by the same user? (without breaking the Terms and Conditions)
