  • Design Pattern for Social Game Mission Mechanics

    - by Furkan ÇALISKAN
When we want to design a mission sub-system like in the The Ville or Sims Social, what kind of design pattern / idea would fit the best? There may be relation between missions (first do this then this etc...) or not. What do you think sims social or the ville or any other social games is using for this? I'm looking for a best-practise method to contruct a mission framework for tha game. How the well-known game firms do this stuff for their large scale social facebook games? Giving missions to the players and wait players to complete them. when they finished the missions, providing a method to catch this mission complete events considering large user database by not using server-side not so much to prevent high-traffic / resource consumption. how should i design the database and server-client communication to achive this design condidering this trade-off.

  • Where to go after Adobe Flex? [closed]

    - by jan halfar
After this post http://blogs.adobe.com/flex/2011/11/your-questions-about-flex.html and especially this paragraph: ... Does Adobe recommend we use Flex or HTML5 for our enterprise application development? In the long-term, we believe HTML5 will be the best technology for enterprise application development. We also know that, currently, Flex has clear benefits for large-scale client projects typically associated with desktop application profiles. ... Make no mistake, the days of Flex are over. Thus a lot of people are asking themselves: Which technology(ies) will solve their and their customers problems in a future without flex? P.S.: Obviously the correct answer for adobe would have been " ...Since we believe, that HTML5 will be the best technology enterprise application development, we will ensure that it will be targeted by future releases of the Flex framework ..."

  • Evoland: A Video Game About Video Game History

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Browser-based Evoland is, hands down, one of the more clever video game concepts to come across our desk. The game itself is a history of video games–as you play the game the game evolves from a limited 8-bit monochrome adventure into a modern game. You start off unable to do anything but move right and collect a treasure chest. That treasure chest unlocks the left key (keys are configured in a WASD style keypad) which in turn allows you to move around a simple monochromatic forest clearing to unlock the rest of the movement keys. From there you begin unlocking more game features, effectively evolving the game from monochrome to 16 and then 64 bit color and unlocking various game play features. The game itself is short and can be played in about the same time you could watch a video covering the basics of various game changes over the last 30 years but actually playing the game and watching the evolution in progress is far more rewarding. Hit up the link below to take it for a spin. • Stage3D Camera problem

    - by Thomas Versteeg
    I am trying to create a 2D Stage3D game where you can move the camera around the level in an RTS style. I thought about using Orthographic Matrix3D functions for this but when I try to scroll the whole "stage" also scrolls. This is the Camera code: public function Camera2D(width:int, height:int, zoom:Number = 1) { resize(width, height); _zoom = zoom; } public function resize(width:Number, height:Number):void { _width = width; _height = height; _projectionMatrix = makeMatrix(0, width, 0, height); _recalculate = true; } protected function makeMatrix(left:Number, right:Number, top:Number, bottom:Number, zNear:Number = 0, zFar:Number = 1):Matrix3D { return new Matrix3D(Vector.<Number>([ 2 / (right - left), 0, 0, 0, 0, 2 / (top - bottom), 0, 0, 0, 0, 1 / (zFar - zNear), 0, 0, 0, zNear / (zNear - zFar), 1 ])); } public function get viewMatrix():Matrix3D { if (_recalculate) { _recalculate = false; _viewMatrix.identity(); _viewMatrix.appendTranslation( -_width / 2 - _x, -_height / 2 - y, 0); _viewMatrix.appendScale(_zoom, _zoom, 1); _renderMatrix.identity(); _renderMatrix.append(_viewMatrix); _renderMatrix.append(_projectionMatrix); } return _renderMatrix; } Here are two screenshots to show what I mean: How do I only let the inside of the stage3D scroll and not the whole stage?

  • How to implement Undo and Redo feature in as3

    - by Swati Singh
I am going to create an application in that i have to implement an Undo and Redo feature. In the application there will be multiple objects located on stage and user can customize the position of the objects. But when user clicks on Undo the object go back to their default position and after clicking on redo object will move on the new position. So my question is how can i apply these feature in my application? Is there any library or any third party classes? Can some one help me? Thanks in advance.

  • Make IE stop asking me to install adobe flash player

    - by Sam
I don't have adobe flash player installed, and don't miss the flashing ads a bit. The only thing that annoys me: IE8 keeps asking me "this web site wants to install Adobe Flash Player", and I want to get rid of this question. I don't want to install it, not now, not ever. So how do I make IE stop asking me about it?

  • Slot Machine Pay Out

    - by Kris.Mitchell
I have done a lot of research into random number generators for slot machines, reel stop calculations and how to physically give the user a good chance on winning. What I can't figure out is how to properly insure that the machine is going to have a payout rating of (lets say) 95%. So, I have a reel set up wit 22 spaces on it. Filled with 16 different symbols. When I get my random number, mod divide it by 64 and get the remainder, I hop over to a loop up table to see how the virtual stop relates to the reel position. Now that I have how the reels are going to stop, do I make sure the payout ratio is correct? For every dollar they put in, how to I make sure the machine will pay out .95 cents? Thanks for the ideas. I am working in actionscript, if that helps with the language issues, but in general I am just looking for theory.

  • How to implement line of sight restriction in actionscript?

    - by Michiel Standaert
I have a problem with a game i am programming. I am making some sort of security game and i would like to have some visual line of sight. The problem is that i can't restrict my line of sight so my cops can't see through the walls. Below you find the design, in which they can look through windows, but not walls. Further below you find an illustration of what my problem is exactly. this is what it looks like now. As you can see, the cops can see through walls. This is the map i would want to use to restrict the line of sight. So the way i am programming the line of sight now is just by calculating some points and drawing the sight accordingly, as shown below. Note that i also check for a hittest using bitmapdata to check whether or not my player has been spotted by any of the cops. private function setSight(e:Event=null):Boolean { g = copCanvas.graphics; g.clear(); for each(var cop:Cop in copCanvas.getChildren()) { var _angle:Number = cop.angle; var _radians:Number = (_angle * Math.PI) / 180; var _radius:Number = 50; var _x1:Number = cop.x + (cop.width/2); var _y1:Number = cop.y + (cop.height/2); var _baseX:Number = _x1 + (Math.cos(_radians) * _radius); var _baseY:Number = _y1 - (Math.sin(_radians) * _radius); var _x2:Number = _baseX + (25 * Math.sin(_radians)); var _y2:Number = _baseY + (25 * Math.cos(_radians)); var _x3:Number = _baseX - (25 * Math.sin(_radians)); var _y3:Number = _baseY - (25 * Math.cos(_radians)); g.beginFill(0xff0000, 0.3); g.moveTo(_x1, _y1); g.lineTo(_x2, _y2); g.lineTo(_x3, _y3); g.endFill(); } var _cops:BitmapData = new BitmapData(width, height, true, 0); _cops.draw(copCanvas); var _bmpd:BitmapData = new BitmapData(10, 10, true, 0); _bmpd.draw(me); if(_cops.hitTest(new Point(0, 0), 10, _bmpd, new Point(me.x, me.y), 255)) { gameover.alpha = 1; setTimeout(function():void{ gameover.alpha = 0; }, 5000); stop(); return true; } return false; } So now my question is: Is there someone who knows how to restrict the view so that the cops can't look through the walls? Thanks a lot in advance. ps: i have already looked at this tutorial by emanuele feronato, but i can't use the code to restric the visual line of sight.

  • Banner Ad Development: What programming should be required?

    - by FXquincy

I'm not sure if they're development, design, or a niche particular to actionscript designers. First, What programming knowledge is required for Banner Ads (IDE, languages, Frameworks etc)? Second, is this a niche for designers or developers? How differently do designers and developers see their skills in JavaScript?

  • Does swf provide better compress rate than zlib for png image?

    - by Huang F. Lei
Somebody told me that when a png image is stored in swf, it's separated to several layer, hence the alpha channel can be compressed better. Is it true? Or, once png image is imported into a swf, it's format is changed, e.g converted into bitmap data, and than compressed by swf's compress algorithm. That's, it is not in png format anymore. I don't know how swf packing its resource, please tell me if you know.

  • Away3D & Directional Light w/ Rotating Meshes

    - by seethru
    This is likely a stupid error but I can't seem to find what I've done wrong. I've got a simple scene with 10 cylinders rotating at a default speed. If I grab one of these cylinders I can rotate it in the opposite direction or at a greater speed. I have a single directional light in the scene. It would appear that the directional light is only calculated at initialization and not on further frames. The shadow created by the light rotates with the cylinder giving the impression that the light is rotating when it isn't. Camera & Light Initialization _view = new View3D(); addChild(_view); _view.antiAlias = 4; _view.backgroundColor = 0xFFFFFF; _view.camera.z = -850; _view.camera.y = 0; _view.camera.x = 0; _view.camera.lookAt(new Vector3D()); _view.camera.lens = new PerspectiveLens(15); _view.mousePicker = PickingType.RAYCAST_BEST_HIT; _light = new DirectionalLight(); _light.z = -850; _light.direction = new Vector3D(1, 1, 1); _light.color = 0xFFFFFF; _light.ambient = 0.1; _light.diffuse = 0.7; _view.scene.addChild(_light); Mesh and Material creation var material:TextureMaterial = new TextureMaterial(createPow2Texture(sprite, _colors[i]) , true, false, true); material.animateUVs = true; material.lightPicker = _lightPicker; cylinder = new Mesh(new CylinderGeometry(radius, radius, 13, 70, 1, true, true), material); cylinder.subMeshes[0].scaleU = spriteWidth / sprite.width; cylinder.y = y; cylinder.mouseEnabled = true; cylinder.pickingCollider = PickingColliderType.AS3_BEST_HIT; cylinder.addEventListener(MouseEvent3D.MOUSE_OVER, onMouseOverMesh); cylinder.addEventListener(MouseEvent3D.MOUSE_MOVE, onMouseOverMesh); cylinder.addEventListener(MouseEvent3D.MOUSE_OUT, onMouseOutMesh); _cylinders.push(cylinder); Frame private function onEnterFrame(event:Event):void { for each (var mesh:Mesh in _cylinders) { if (mesh == _mouseOverMesh) continue; mesh.rotationY += 0.25; } _view.render(); }

  • Flashplayer 11.1 on Ubuntu 12.04

    - by Courtney
I am new to Ubuntu and I've visited pretty much every webpage that exists on the internet about how to install canonical Flashplayers. Ubuntu 12.04 comes with Adobe Flashplayer 11.2 but that is not the most recent version and Adobe no longer supports Ubuntu apparently. I have no idea how to install Flashplayer 11.1 via Terminal. I was able to find a site with canonicals (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/flashplugin-nonfree) but I have no clue where to go from there, though I've tried for approx. 4 hours to figure it out on my own. I am hoping someone could take me step by step through the exact code. For example, "download, then install file" is not specific enough since I am completely new to this. Please help!

  • My raycaster is putting out strange results, how do I fix it?

    - by JamesK89
I'm working on a raycaster in ActionScript 3.0 for the fun of it, and as a learning experience. I've got it up and running and its displaying me output as expected however I'm getting this strange bug where rays go through corners of blocks and the edges of blocks appear through walls. • Linux Mplayer Instead of flash any distro/browser

    - by data_jepp
The thing is that flash sucks for linux on 64-bit, performance vice. Due to this I actually download every clip to a temp folder and play the file while it's being downloaded with mplayer. This works really nice. Flash is not to play a video. Does there exist a plugin for this for any browser? I tried google, but I can't find the right words to search for.

  • Extract derived 3D scaling from a 3D Sprite to set to a 2D billboard

    - by Bill Kotsias
I am trying to get the derived position and scaling of a 3D Sprite and set them to a 2D Sprite. I have managed to do the first part like this: var p:Point = sprite3d.local3DToGlobal(new Vector3D(0,0,0)); billboard.x = p.x; billboard.y = p.y; But I can't get the scaling part correctly. I am trying this: var mat:Matrix3D = sprite3d.transform.getRelativeMatrix3D(stage); // get derived matrix(?) var scaleV:Vector3D = mat.decompose()[2]; // get scaling vector from derived matrix var scale:Number = scaleV.length; billboard.scaleX = scale; billboard.scaleY = scale; ...but the result is apparently wrong. PS. One might ask what I am trying to achieve. I am trying to create "billboard" 3D sprites, i.e. sprites which are affected by all 3D transformations except rotations, thus they always face the "camera".

  • How Can You Get More Productive In Life Sciences Sales?

    - by charles.knapp
Only half of all doctors will meet with pharmaceutical sales reps, and that percentage continues to decrease. Furthermore, when reps are granted an opportunity to share information, the average interaction is only about a minute and a half. Concurrently, call quotas continue to increase. What does this matter? Sales reps need to spend less time on traditional planning and after-call reporting, more time making calls, and make more productive use of short presentation times. Fortunately for sales reps, Oracle offers the first life sciences CRM that is designed to double sales time and halve reporting time. In particular, our new Life Sciences Edition Offline Client is designed so that you can actually turn the screen around, so that your CRM is useful for presentations and not just reporting, whether you are connected to cloud or working offline such as in restricted clinical environments. Watch Piers Evans, Industry Strategy Director, show what this looks like in the day of a typical pharmaceutical sales representative. By use of this code snippet, I agree to the Brightcove Publisher T and C found at https://accounts.brightcove.com/en/terms-and-conditions/. -- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soon as the line is read by the browser. • How to properly render a Frame Buffer to the BackBuffer in Stage3D / AGAL

    - by bigp
After doing a render pass with RenderToTarget (RTT), how do you properly render that texture buffer to the screen while maintaining original scale / proportions so it doesn't stretch or lose quality? Can an AGAL VertexShader & FragmentShader be written so it's adaptable to any Texture size and Viewport dimensions? I find I'm getting some "blocky" effects in some of my first attempts at "ping-ponging" between two Texture buffers (to create trailing effects). Perhaps I'm not using the UVs correctly between the rendering-to-target and/or the backbuffer? Is there a simpler way just to "splash" the texture on the backbuffer, or is a Quad absolutely necessary (4 vertices, 2 triangles)? If it needs the Quad, should the Texture buffer be fully drawn (0.0 to 1.0 for vertical and horizontal UVs), or only a percentage of it should, like the example below? Texture Buffer U: 0.0 to viewport.width/texturebuffer.width; Texture Buffer V: 0.0 to viewport.height/texturebuffer.height; Thanks!

  • How Can You Work Smarter In Life Sciences Sales?

    - by charles.knapp
One major reason why executives keep choosing Oracle CRM On Demand and Siebel CRM is our ongoing investments that deliver comprehensive business process support, tailored "at the factory" for specific industries. For example, life sciences sales in many cases globally follows an indirect, "influence" model, where a medical clinician uses expert working knowledge to prescribe products that are sold by independent pharmacies. Smarter, presentations to clinicians can increase sales. Oracle's life sciences CRM is built for sales reps by sales reps. We worked with representatives at 15 of the top 20 pharmaceutical firms on our latest release. Oracle helps reps work smarter from planning their day to delivering samples and rapidly presenting details to busy clinicians. Watch Piers Evans, Industry Strategy Director, show what this looks like in the day of a typical pharmaceutical sales rep. • Slideshows in elastic or fluid layouts?

    - by aendrew
Hi folks, I'm building a new WordPress TwentyTen child theme using the ElastiCSS framework ( http://elasticss.com/ ) and am trying to figure out the best way of using some sort of dynamic content slideshow. What is the best way to implement a slideshow in a fluid or elastic layout such that it remains proportional to the other items in the content area? Should I even bother trying to obtain that? Or should I use like four different sizes in conjunction with something like the Less framework ( http://lessframework.com/ )? Thanks! (BTW, I've posted here because this was more of a "what's the best option" question than a "How do I program that?" question. If you think it would be more appropriate on SO, please move it there.)

  • How to store character moves (sprite animations)?

    - by Saad
So I'm thinking about making a small rpg, mainly to test out different design patterns I've been learning about. But the one question that I'm not too sure on how to approach is how to store an array of character moves in the best way possible. So let's say I have arrays of different sprites. This is how I'm thinking about implementing it: array attack = new array (10); array attack2 = new array(5); (loop) //blit some image attack.push(imageInstance); (end loop) Now every time I want the animation I call on attack or attack2; is there a better structure? The problem with this is let's say there are 100 different attacks, and a player can have up to 10 attacks equipped. So how do I tell which attack the user has; should I use a hash map?
