  • What's the reason in your mind Exception are heavily used in Managed (C# and Java) language but not in C++?

    AFAIK, a lot of C++ projects don't allow exceptions and deny them in coding guidelines. I have a lot of reasons, for example, Exception is hard to handle correctly if your binary needs to be compiled by separate and different compilers. But it doesn't fully convince me, there is a lot of projects which are just using one compiler. Compared to C++, Exceptions are heavily used in C# and Java and the reason can only be that Exception are not bringing enough benefit. One point is Debugbility in practice. Exception can not get the call stack in C++ code, but in C# and Java you can get the call stack from Exception, it is significant and makes debugging easier. No-CallStack is not the fault of the Exception, it is the language difference , but it impacts the Exception usage. So what's the reason that exceptions are frowned upon in c++ programs?

  • Cost vs. Fun - Dilemma about learning a serverside language [closed]

    I want to learn a new server-side language. I already know Java. I'm fascinated by Scala, have read about it a lot, and want to get practical experience. But I also have some concerns of practical nature - I want to do the backend for many small, non-profit apps, and pay the lowest price for hosting possible. I also want that other people can easily contribute to these apps, if applicable. This leads me in PHP's direction. But I don't like PHP and would like to use these small projects to learn Scala instead. You see the problem, I don't want to pay more money each month, from my own pocket, for hosting. But I want to use these projects to learn Scala. Is there a practical solution for this?

    I recently attended a conference and met some insanely talented developers with mile-long lists of accomplishments. One puzzling thing I noticed about many of these wildly successful people is that a lot of their output (books, blogs, games, mobile apps) are done as hobby projects outside of their normal jobs. Not only this, but most of them were married, and some even with children. I'm absolutely baffled by this. My question is targeted to folks that are married, working full time, and also spend time outside of work on hobby projects or extra programming. The question is: How many hours do you put in programming outside of your normal job, and how do you balance it with your family life?

  • highlight navigation PHP

    I've launched a website a while back and successfully used Javascript + CSS to highlight the current page on the navigation. However, it is not working in Safari and it does not validate well, when using Javascript, so I decided to have PHP assign the CSS id to the HTML elements. So far, it works fine, compared to the other times where there was two of each link displayed, when it was attempted in PHP. My problem is that all links look normal and the CSS property is not applied. I have a feeling that it has to do with my PHP code, but I'm not certain.     I'm trying to fetch e-mails into Redmine via IMAP. The e-mails I'm generating look like this: FooBar Ltd 123456 http://example.com/Foobar-Ltd-123456.html Project: backend Tracker: Dataerror Beschreibung: This is the description =========================== CLIENT_IP: 192.168.1.215 HTTP_USER_AGENT: mozilla/asdfjköl I try to fetch them into Redmine via this command: rake -f /var/www/projects/redmine/Rakefile redmine:email:receive_imap \ RAILS_ENV="production" host=example.com port=993 ssl=true username=redmine \ password=1234 project=myproject tracker=other \ allow_override=project,tracker,category,priority \ move_on_success=read move_on_failure=failed But the e-mails get moved into the failed folder. I had this setup running some time ago with a different e-mail generator but pretty much the same template, and I can't figure out why it's not working. The permissions seem to be OK too. In order to further debug this issue, I need some logfiles. Are there any logfiles written by this command? Or are there any other suggestions to solve this issue?     I was tried to setup git and gitosis for our projects. I got an issue when I run the gitosis-init. I don't know what happen or how to check. Please help me on what I need to check or do.     We've migrated a client from google apps to an MS Exchange 2010 SP2 on-premise setup. The setup /prepareAD went well, and the software was installed with the Administrator account. We've used the Exchange Management Console to setup mailboxes and had to google up the appropriate workarounds such as going into each users Advanced Security Settings and selecting "include inheritable permissions from this object's parents", and changing their logon-to from specific machines to "all computers" so that they can connect to Outlook Web Access, and in turn so their Outlook 2007-2010 clients can connect to Exchange. Sending and receiving emails are working well. Now that all this is in place, we can create Dynamic Distrubution Lists with no problem, but as soon as we try and create a DISTRIBUTION LIST, either in the EMC or the Exchange PowerShell, we get an error. As the error message in the powershell is more verbose, I include this if anyone can suggest how we remedy this: [PS] C:\Windows\system32new-DistributionGroup -Name 'projects' -SamAccountName 'projects' -Alias 'projects' Active Directory operation failed on DC.cppe.local.   • Why can't I copy .zip files from a server to a server in a different domain?

    At work, we're using a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM as our build server. At the end of the build process for any of our projects, we copy the packaged deployment files to a folder on the server where they'll be deployed. (This is done in a batch command by a service account.) For most of our projects, which deploy to a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM, this step goes swimmingly. But for one project, which deploys to a Windows Server 2003 R2 VM which resides in a different domain on our network, the .zip files return "Access is denied" and don't copy, though all of the other files copy correctly. Our sysadmins say they haven't prevented this in group policy or by other means. If I'm logged in the build server as myself and run the copy in the command window, I can't copy the .zip files over either, so it's not just a matter of the service account's permissions. If I log into the 2003 server and then copy from the build server to the 2003 server, using the command window, it works, whether I run as myself or as our service account. Only .zip files cause the "Access is denied" problem. Even a (fake) .exe file copies correctly. All of our other projects have .zip files, and they copy to their 2008 R2 server correctly. Is there a way I can get the Windows Server 2003 R2 VM to accept .zip files copied from our build server?

  • Search for partial IP address using Windows Search?

    I have a folder, c:\projects\, added to Windows Index. I know the indexing is working because I search for stuff in this folder all the time and the results come up very fast, and I've never noticed any accuracy problem until now. (I have had to tweak Indexing options to expand which file types have their contents indexed rather than just the file name, etc, but after that Search has worked pretty well for me). I've encountered a problem while trying to search for references to a particular IP address subnet. I'm trying to find all references to IP's with the pattern "192.168.220.xxx" (AKA, the 192.168.220.0/24, AKA 192.168.220.0/255.255.255.0 IP/netmask). Within Windows Explorer: c:\projects**.* is indexed c:\projects\work\project1\network_list.txt contains several "192.168.220.xxx" IP's Indexing status says all items are indexed (193,000 items). When I try to search for partial IP match, there are no search results. Tried searching for: 192.168.220, 192.168, 192.168.220., 192.168.220., 192.168.220.?, 192.168.220.??, 192.168.220.???, 192.168., 192.168.. Also tried variants of all the above surrounded with double quotes. All the searches returned 0 results. Within MS Outlook 2007: My mailbox, and all my offline .pst's are indexed. I search in Outlook pretty frequently, so I'm pretty sure indexed searches work across inbox and all .pst's. Indexing status in Outlook says all items are indexed. I also have references to these IP's in email, and I'd like to find all of them. Basically same deal as above, can't search for "192.168.220.xxx" IP's. Any way to fix this?

    So I have set up a simple server running debian stable (squeeze), and have configured git. Using gitolite, I have all functionality (at least the basic clone/push/pull/commit) working. Installation of gitweb went without any issues.     Hi, We have a Ubuntu 10.04 Server that has a bunch of Samba shares on it that Windows workstations connect to. Each Windows workstation has a valid username/password to access the shares, which have restricted access governed by Samba. The problem we are experiencing is that Samba doesn't seem to be able to mimic the Windows way of handling "Read Only" attributes. Say I have two users, UserA and UserB, both a group called Staff - UserA creates a file that is readable/writeable by the group (ie. chmod rwxrwx---). If UserA then sets the "Read Only" flag, this changes the permissions to r-xr-x--- (i.e. no write for anyone). As UserB is in the same group as UserA, they should be able to remove the "Read Only" permission - however, they can't as Samba won't allow it. Is there a way to force Samba to allow users within the same group to remove the "Read Only" from a file not created by them? Say I have two users, UserA and UserB, both a group called Staff - UserA creates a file that is readable/writeable by the group (ie. chmod rwxrwx---). If UserA then sets the "Read Only" flag, this changes the permissions to r-xr-x--- (i.e. no write for anyone). As UserB is in the same group as UserA, they should be able to remove the "Read Only" permission - however, they can't as Samba won't allow it. Is there a way to force Samba to allow users within the same group to remove the "Read Only" from a file not created by them?   • Tridion 2011 SP1 Core Service - expose to live server within PROD env

    We have a requirement to allow our users to submit information about their "projects" - a small piece of text and single image they upload. Ultimately we'll have a listing page of user contributed projects that others can comment on and rate. We've decided to user Tridion's UGC for rating & comments site-wide for this first phase which has got me thinking - UGC is tied to Tridion published pages & components, if we want UGC on our user-submitted projects, they'll have to be created within Tridion as components themselves, not be sat in some custom db table? Is this where the Core Service could come in? My understanding is that the CD Web Service is for retrieval, not for interacting with the Content Manager. Is it OK (!) architecturally to expose the Core Service only to our live application servers so our backend .NET code can create "project components" that can be then be published by editors allowing them to be commented on? Everything sounds pretty neat and tidy apart from the "exposing Core Service to live servers" bit. Without this though I'd have to write a custom way to "transfer" it back over to the Content Manager - maybe like Audience Manager Sync works? Anyone done this before?

  • Set up multiple websites on a local web server

    I have spent the last few days setting up a CentOS 6 server on my local network so that I can host multiple projects that I'm currently working on. Everything has been set up so that I access the server by typing 192.168.1.10 and the Apache test page comes up. What I'm aiming to do is to access different projects by typing in 192.168.1.10/project, and then view the project as if it was on it's own standalone server. I have thought about just sticking these sites inside folders on the server then accessing them that way, but a lot of my projects use CakePHP so this isn't feasible. So what I need to do is create VirtualHosts in Apache to allow me to do this, but without using a domain name. I want to stick to using the IP address of the machine (which is static). Any ideas? EDIT I've followed Peter's suggestion, but now I have a new problem. In the httpd.conf file I have entered the following information: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> ServerAdmin [email protected] DocumentRoot /www/html/project1 ServerName local.project1.com ErrorLog logs/local.project1.com-error_log CustomLog logs/local.project1.com-access_log common </VirtualHost> And now Apache is saying: Starting httpd: Warning: DocumentRoot [/www/html/project1] does not exist When it clearly does exist. I've disabled SELinux and I can confirm this isn't turned on. I've also checked the ownership of the folder, and its owned by root. I can also save files to these folders using a guest FTP account (which isn't associated to root), so the folders are being listed and can be written to. But when I try the folder in a web browser it doesn't seem to work either. I've also done a reboot of the server and the problem persists. What should I change in order to resolve this?

  • setting up tracd behind mod_proxy?

    I'm having trouble setting up mod_proxy and tracd. Seems almost all the search results for this problem take me to the built-in trac documentation page that mentions it as an option. I have several VirtualServers already running on the box in question, so running tracd on port 80 or 443 is not an option, but I do want to make my trac server accessible on this machine without exposing an additional port via the firewall. Making things even more complicated is that I have multiple trac repositories being served by the same instance of tracd, and so I want to set it up so: http://trac.abc.com is proxy'd to localhost:8000/projects/abcproject, and http://trac.def.com is proxy'd to localhost:8000/projects/defproject. Currently, the setup I have below results in 100% 403 errors. The server is running as www-data and the directory where all trac files are stored is owned by www-data, AND tracd (as show below) is running as www-data, so not sure where it's getting hung up. The relevant configuration on /var/apache2/sites-enabled/trac.abc.com: ProxyPass / http://localhost:8000/abcproject ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8000/abcproject The relevant configuration on /var/apache2/sites-enabled/trac.def.com: ProxyPass / http://localhost:8000/defproject ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8000/defproject The command used to instantiate tracd: tracd -a defproject,/var/www/vhosts/trac-common/users.htdigest,DEFProject -a abcproject,/var/www/vhosts/trac-common/users.htdigest,ABCProject -p 8000 -b localhost -e /var/www/vhosts/trac-common/projects If I access the site at http://localhost:8000/ everything works fine, but if I try to access via any of the proxy'd hosts I end up with 403 at every turn. I've used mod_proxy successfully as described above for other servers, such as couchdb, so maybe this has to do with the headers sent by tracd??

  • Why is Git telling me "Your branch is ahead of 'origin/master' by 11 commits." and how do I get it t

    I'm a Git newbie. I recently moved a Rails project from Subversion to Git. I followed the tutorial here: http://www.simplisticcomplexity.com/2008/03/05/cleanly-migrate-your-subversion-repository-to-a-git-repository/ I am also using unfuddle.com to store my code. I make changes on my Mac laptop on the train to/from work and then push them to unfuddle when I have a network connection using the following command: git push unfuddle master I use Capistrano for deployments and pull code from the unfuddle repository using the master branch. Lately I've noticed the following message when I run "git status" on my laptop: # On branch master # Your branch is ahead of 'origin/master' by 11 commits. # nothing to commit (working directory clean) And I'm confused as to why. I thought my laptop was the origin... but don't know if either the fact that I originally pulled from Subversion or push to Unfuddle is what's causing the message to show up. How can I: Find out where Git thinks 'origin/master' is? If it's somewhere else, how do I turn my laptop into the 'origin/master'? Get this message to go away. It makes me think Git is unhappy about something. My mac is running Git version 1.6.0.1. When I run git remote show origin as suggested by dbr, I get the following: ~/Projects/GeekFor/geekfor 10:47 AM $ git remote show origin fatal: '/Users/brian/Projects/GeekFor/gf/.git': unable to chdir or not a git archive fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly When I run git remote -v as suggested by Aristotle Pagaltzis, I get the following: ~/Projects/GeekFor/geekfor 10:33 AM $ git remote -v origin /Users/brian/Projects/GeekFor/gf/.git unfuddle [email protected]:spilth/geekfor.git Now, interestingly, I'm working on my project in the geekfor directory but it says my origin is my local machine in the gf directory. I believe gf was the temporary directory I used when converting my project from Subversion to Git and probably where I pushed to unfuddle from. Then I believe I checked out a fresh copy from unfuddle to the geekfor directory. So it looks like I should follow dbr's advice and do: git remote rm origin git remote add origin [email protected]:spilth/geekfor.git
