  • WCF client hangs on response

    I have a WCF client (running on Win7) pointing to a WebSphere service. All is good from a test harness (a little test fixture outside my web app) but when my calls to the service originate from my web project one of the calls is extremely slow to deserialize (it takes up to 10 times longer) and not just the first time. I can see from fiddler that the response comes back quickly but then the WCF client hangs on the response itself for more than a minute before the next line of code is hit by the debugger, almost if the client was having trouble deserializing. This happens only if in the response I have a given pdf string, base64 encoded chunked. If for example the service raises a fault (this pdf string is not there) then the response is deserialized immediately. Again, If I send the exact same envelope through Soap-UI or from outside the web project all is good. I am at loss - What should I be looking for and is there some config setting that might do the trick? Any help appreciated!

  • Can I use part of MD5 hash for data identification?

    I use MD5 hash for identifying files with unknown origin. No attacker here, so I don't care that MD5 has been broken and one can intendedly generate collisions. My problem is I need to provide logging so that different problems are diagnosed easier. If I log every hash as a hex string that's too long, inconvenient and looks ugly, so I'd like to shorten the hash string. Now I know that just taking a small part of a GUID is a very bad idea - GUIDs are designed to be unique, but part of them are not. Is the same true for MD5 - can I take say first 4 bytes of MD5 and assume that I only get collision probability higher due to the reduced number of bytes compared to the original hash?

  • Dynamic swappable Data Access Layer

    I'm writing a data driven WPF client. The client will typically pull data from a WCF service, which queries a SQL db, but I'd like the option to pull the data directly from SQL or other arbitrary data sources. I've come up with this design and would like to hear your opinion on whether it is the best design. First, we have some data object we'd like to extract from SQL. // The Data Object with a single property public class Customer { private string m_Name = string.Empty; public string Name { get { return m_Name; } set { m_Name = value;} } } Then I plan on using an interface which all data access layers should implement. Suppose one could also use an abstract class. Thoughts? // The interface with a single method interface ICustomerFacade { List<Customer> GetAll(); } One can create a SQL implementation. // Sql Implementation public class SqlCustomrFacade : ICustomerFacade { public List<Customer> GetAll() { // Query SQL db and return something useful // ... return new List<Customer>(); } } We can also create a WCF implementation. The problem with WCF is is that it doesn't use the same data object. It creates its own local version, so we would have to copy the details over somehow. I suppose one could use reflection to copy the values of similar fields across.     How to get a concurrent method? In my case, the library would be called from a program to get a value to each argument str --in method Get()--. When it's used Get() then it assigns a variable from type bytes.Buffer which it will have the value to return. The returned values --when it been concurrently called-- will be stored into a database or a file and it doesn't matter that its output been of FIFO way (from method). type test struct { foo uint8 bar uint8 } func NewTest(arg1 string) (*test, os.Error) {...} func (self *test) Get(str string) ([]byte, os.Error) { var format bytes.Buffer ... } I think that all code inner of method Get() should be put inner of go func() {...}(), and then to use a channel. Would there be a problem if it's called another method from Get()? Or would it also has to be concurrent?

  • GWT: Loading different UI's based on URL

    Trying to get a GWT project off the ground and finding it difficult to do any basic routing. Trying to fire up different UI's based on the URL. Thought I could set a string based on the getHash() and then switch off that, but seems cumbersome (and annoying since I can't do string-based switches in Java). There's got to be a best practice for this. I know Gerrit uses hashes for determining this type of information but couldn't find where they do it in the source. Or is this totally not GWT-related? Something I can handle in web.xml? Any help is much appreciated.

In my understanding, part of REST advantage is that it can hide the implementation details. A RESTful URI like "http://machinename/Service/value/2" can be implemented by any RESTful framework, but a "http://machinename/Service.svc/value/2" exposes its implementation is WCF. How can I remove this ".svc" host in the access URI?

    Not sure the title fully describes the problem/question I'm trying to ask, sorry. One of my fellow developers has created classes as such: class Widget attr_accessor :model_type ... end and: class ModelType MODEL1 = "model1" MODEL2 = "model2" MODEL3 = "model3" end Now he wants me to convert a retrieved string "MODEL1" to the constant. So that when he is referencing that model elsewhere he can use ModelType::MODEL1. Obviously I've got to convert from the string I'm being given with something like the following: case model_type when 'MODEL1' @model_type = ModelType::MODEL1 ... end I feel like this is clunky, so I'd like to know if there is a better DRYer way of providing this kind of functionality.

    I have been trying all afternoon to get my node.js application to create MongoDB indexes properly. I am using the Mongoose ODM and in my schema definition below I have the username field set to a unique index. The collection and document all get created properly, it's just the indexes that aren't working. All the documentation says that the ensureIndex command should be run at startup to create any indexes, but none are being made. I'm using MongoLab for hosting if that matters. I have also repeatedly dropped the collection.   • Crystal Reports: Cannot insert some fields from Field Explorer to Report

    I have an existing report (Crystal Reports 11) that is based on two Oracle views. I have made 'Verify database' already, it's done and up to date. My problem is that I can insert some fields to report but some other I cannot. For example: field Name (string(35)) is ok, but similar field Compamy (string(20)) I cannot insert to Report. Drag&drop does not work and small button "Insert to Report" in Field Explorer is disabled too. Next symptom: when I try to use functionless field (e.g. Company) in Record Selection Formula Editor, Crystal Reports crash. There is any way how to add these fields into Report? Thanks

    I'm trying to take one attribute to use as the key, and another to use as the value. If I use (xDoc is an XDocument object in the example): Dictionary<string, XElement> test = xDoc.Descendants() .Where<XElement>(t => t.Name == "someelement") .ToDictionary<XElement, string>(t => t.Attribute("myattr").Value.ToString()); I get a dictionary with the myattr value as key (which is what I want) but the entire XElement object as the value. What I want to do, is to select a second attribute to set as the value property on each dictionary item, but can't seem to figure that out. Is it possible to do all of this in 1 Linq statement?
