  Heading Is there a way to map an arbitrary string to a HEX COLOR code. I tried to compute the HEX number for string using string hashcode. Now I need to convert this hex number to six digits which are in HEX color code range. Any suggestions ?   Hi people, Is there a friendlier way to get an instance of FontMetrics than FontMetrics fm = Graphics.getFontMetrics(Font); I hate this way because of the following example: If you want to create in a game a menu and you want all the menuitems in the center of the screen you need fontmetrics. But, mostly, menuitems are clickable. So I create an array of Rectangles and all the rectangles fits around the items, so when the mouse is pressed, I can simply use for (int i = 0; i < rects.length; i++) if (rects[i].contains(mouseX, mouseY)) { ... } But to create the rects I also need FontMetrics for their coordinates. So this mean that I have to construct all my rectangles in the paint-method of my menu. So I want a way to get the FontMetrics so I can construct the Rectangles in a method called by the constructor. I started with a common task - multiply the elements of two arrays and sum up the results: var first:Array[Float] ... var second:Array[Float] ... var sum=0f; for(ix<-0 until first.length) sum += first(ix) * second(ix); Here is how I reformed the work: sum = first.zip(second).map{ case (a,b) => a*b }.reduceLeft(_+_) When I benchmarked the two approaches, the second method takes 40 times as long to complete! Why does the second method take so much longer? How can I reform the work to be both speed efficient and use functional programming style?

  Hi - I've gotten a checkbox header renderer to work well with flat DPs, but a hierarchical collection view is another story. On click, I want it to select all checkboxes in a given column. • Why Use java.lang.reflect.Array For Anything Other Than Array Creation?

  Java Class java.lang.reflect.Array provides a set of tools for creating an array dynamically. However in addition to that it has a whole set of methods for accessing (get, set, and length) an array. I don't understand the point of this, since you can (and presumably would) cast your dynamically generated array as an array upon creation, which means you can use the normal array access (bracket notation) functionality. In fact, looking at the source code you can see that is all the class does, cast the array, and throw an exception if the cast fails. So what's the point / usefulness of all of these extra methods?

  I have a huge "binary" string, like: 1110 0010 1000 1111 0000 1100 1010 0111.... It's length is 0 modulo 4, and may reach 500,000. I have also a corresponding array: {14, 2, 8, 15, 0, 12, 10, 7, ...} (every number in the array corresponds to 4 bits in the string) Given this string, this array, and a number N, I need to calculate the following substring string.substr(4*N, 4), i.e.: for N=0 the result should be 1110 for N=1 the result should be 0010 I need to perform this task many many times, and my question is what would be the fastest method to calculate this substring ? One method is to calculate the substring straight forward: string.substr(4*N, 4). I'm afraid this one is not efficient for such huge strings. Another method is to use array[N].toString(2) and then wrap the result with zeros if needed. I'm not sure how fast is this. May be you have any other ideas ?

• why is link generated in YUI javascript failing to render in rails?

  Using YAHOO.widget.treeview to generate a table with three levels of data: module, submodule, and detail. If there is an image associated with a detail row the javascript generates a link: "<td><a href=\"/screenshot/show/" + rowData.id + "\">Screenshot</a></td>" that is appended to the html for the row. The url is generated correctly and the link appears. When clicked nothing happens except the word 'Done' appears in the browser status bar. Am calling the very same url from another page that does not use javascript and the screenshot page appears as expected.   Hi Everyone! I get files in different formats coming from different systems that I need to import into our database. Part of the import process it to check the line length to make sure the format is correct. We seem to be having issues with files coming from UNIX systems where one character is added. I suspect this is due to the return carriage being encoded differently on UNIX and windows platform. Is there a way to detect on which file system a file was created, other than checking the last character on the line? Or maybe a way of reading the files as text and not binary which I suspect is the issue? Thanks Guys !

  I am writing an application in java that I care about being secure. After encrypting a byte array, I want to forcibly remove from memory anything potentially dangerous such as the key used. In the following snippet key is a byte[], as is data. SecretKeySpec secretKeySpec = new SecretKeySpec(key, "AES"); Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("AES"); cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, secretKeySpec); byte[] encData = cipher.doFinal(data, 0, data.length); Arrays.fill(key, (byte)0); As far as I understand, the last line above overwrites the key with 0s so that it no longer contains any dangerous data, but I can't find a way to overwrite or evict secretKeySpec or cipher similarly. Is there any way to forcibly overwrite the memory held by secretKeySpec and cipher, so that if someone were to be able to view the current memory state (say, via a cold boot attack), they would not get access to this information?

  Hello, I have a string say: Order_num = "0982asdlkj" How can I split that into the 2 variables, with the number element and then another variable with the letter element in php? The number element can be any length from 1 to 4 say and the letter element fills the rest to make every order_num 10 characters long in total. I have found the php explode function...but don't know how to make it in my case because the number of numbers is between 1 and 4 and the letters are random after that, so no way to split at a particular letter. Please help as specifically as possible!

• Using system time directly to get random numbers

  I had to return a random element from an array so I came up with this placeholder: return codes[(int) (System.currentTimeMillis() % codes.length - 1)]; Now than I think of it, I'm tempted to use it in real code. The Random() seeder uses system time as seed in most languages anyway, so why not use that time directly? As a bonus, I'm free from the worry of non-random lower bits of many RNGs. It this hack coming back to bite me? (The language is Java if that's relevant.)

  I'm really confused with an array im making, its gotten a bit confusing to follow but i believe its the only way for me to approach what im trying to do. My idea here is to store getImageData in an array so i can link each image to an array of data. This is how i create my array: var listObj = { id: uid, extra: [ ctx2.getImageData(abposx,abposy,imgwidth,imgheight) ] }; pixeld.push(listObj); So now im trying to run through the array "pixeld" to find the uid but i don't know how the syntax should be.... this is what i tried: for (j = (pixeld.length-1); j > -1; --j){ if(pixeld[j].extra.data[3] !==0){ //line 220 matches.push(pixeld[j].id); } } The problem is i get this error: Uncaught TypeError: Cannot read property '3' of undefined on line 220 I have marked which line is 220 in the for loop.
