  • Can I make a business in teaching home users Ubuntu [on hold]

    I was thinking about a way to bring Ubuntu to the bigger public, since it has great advantages for people in the lower income class that only use a PC for basic usage. They pay for a windows licence without actually needing windows because 95% of what they do is in a browser and the other 5% is typing a word document or making a simpel Excel sheet. So for these people something like Ubuntu is ideal, they can prolong the life of their old PC or laptop with Ubuntu and thus saving extra money. And as we all know, saving money is not only interesting for the lowest of income but for most of us. But when I talk to people they don't want to use Ubuntu because they know Windows and they don't know this, they'll complain about having to adapt to windows 8 but adapting to Ubuntu seems a bridge too far. But what if someone in the neighborhood gave simple Ubuntu courses. Teaching people about Ubuntu, stuff like: What is an OS What is Ubuntu How do I obtain Ubuntu How do I install Ubuntu How do I set up my email in Ubuntu How do I make a text document in Ubuntu How do I update my facebook wall in Ubuntu ... Simple basic PC usage, but within Ubuntu. But as much as I would like to work for free all day, I can't do this for free for people outside of my social circle. So I was wondering if it is possible to make a business and make money with giving Ubuntu courses, or are their steps to be taken before this is possible. However... Do I need an Ubuntu or Canonical license? Do I need to get a certificate? Do I have to make some kind of deal or contract with Canonical? Just to be clear this is all just an idea in my head at this point, I'm just gathering information. I'm not a teacher at a school, just a programmer that is thinking about options in life.   • How to search for a string including spaces in Objective C?

    I have a real basic command-line program, in Objective-C, that searches for user inputed information. Unfourtunately, the code will only read the first word in series of words that the user enters. For example, if the user enters in "Apples are great", only "Apples" is kept (and hence searched later on), excluding the "are great" part of the sentence. Here's what I have so far: char enteredQuery [128]; // array 'name' to hold the scanf string NSString *searchQuery; // ending NSString to hold and compare the user inputed data NSLog(@"Enter search query:"); scanf("%s", enteredQuery); //will read the next line searchQuery = [NSString stringWithCString: enteredQuery encoding: NSASCIIStringEncoding]; //converts scanf data into a NSString type I know it's got to do with me using scanf or the character-encoder conversion, but I can't seem to figure it out.   • How to offset particles from point of origin

    Hi I'm having troubles off setting particles from a point of origin. I want my particles to spread out after a certain radius from a the point of origin. For example, this is what I have right now: All particles emitted from a point of origin. What I want is this: Particles are offset from the point of origin by some amount, i.e after the circle. What is the best way to achieve this? At the moment, I have the point of origin, the position of each particle and its rotation angle. Sorry for the poor illustrations. Edit: I was mistaken, when a particle is created, I have only the point of origin. When the particle is created I am able to calculate the rotation of the particle in the update method after it has moved to a new location using atan2() method. This is how I create/manage particles: Created new particle at enemy ship death location, for every new particle which is added to the list, call Update and Draw to update its position, calculate new angle and draw it.

  • Draw "vision cone" / targetting element onto game world

    I'm wanting to indicate various things using a "pie slice" sort of shape as below. Similar to vision cones in stealth game minimaps, or targetting indicators in RTS type games for frontal area attacks. Something generic enough to be used for both would be ideal. I need to be able to procedurally (and efficiently) change things like the slice width and length, color, transparency, position in the world, etc. For my particular situation, there's no concern with elevation, funky terrain, or really any third axis at all as far as this element is concerned. I have two first inclinations on how to accomplish this: 1) Manually generate the vertices for a main triangle, (possibly two, superimposed to get the border effect), a handful more to approximate the arc at the end, and roll it into a mesh. 2) Use some sort of 2D drawing library to create a circle and mask it off at the right angles, render to texture, and use that. For reference, I have some experience with Ogre3D, but I'm not attached to it as this is a mostly academic pursuit at the moment. Other technologies that might be better at accomplishing this are more than welcome. Finally, I'm kind of curious about how to do a "flashlight" or similar 3D effect that could produce the same result, but on all surfaces in the lit area.

  • Is there a file diff tool that allows for exceptions?

    We currently use Beyond Compare 3.0 and I am quite pleased with it. However, it would be great if I could easily specify an exclusion for a specific one-time case. This is needed when I am doing a code review of some refactoring. For instance: Old code doSomething(ConstantsInterface.FOOBAR); New code: doSomething(BetterEnumeration.FOOBAR); In this case, I have hundreds of changes that I am reviewing that are essentially all the same exact change and I just want to see the exceptions. It would be great if I could easily specify an exception that indicates these two cases are equal. I know of a way to do it in the grammar, but it is tedious and cumbersome in the case where there are ten or so exceptions. Any other tips?

    I can't figure out what I need to do with MVC routing to make this work Here's my one route: routes.MapHttpRoute( name: "DefaultApi", routeTemplate: "{controller}/{id}/{action}", defaults: new { id = RouteParameter.Optional, action = RouteParameter.Optional } ); The request /Shipments/ works great. The request /Shipments/3/Packages works great. The request /Shipments/3 however fails with the error: Multiple actions were found that match the request: System.Linq.IQueryable`1[Api.Controllers.RequisitionsController+PackageRequisitionWithTracking] GetPackageRequisitions(Int32) on type Api.Controllers.RequisitionsController Api.Models.ShipmentRequisition GetShipmentRequisitions(Int32) on type Api.Controllers.RequisitionsController It can't seem to differentiate between: public ShipmentRequisition GetShipmentRequisitions(int id) and [ActionName("Packages")] public IQueryable<PackageRequisitionWithTracking> GetPackageRequisitions(int id) I would have thought the lack of action name on the get shipment by id would allow that route to work.

    I'm using two plugins on my wordpress site: Auto post youtube Pulls a youtube video then drafts it for me. I use this on my index page beside the post code and the thumbnail appears great: <?php tern_wp_youtube_image(); ?> Top Ten Which I use to display the most viewed posts on a page. Not looking great at the moment, but will fix styling later.   • what are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development

    I have vast programming knowledge; C++/C#/ActionScript/ASM/PHP..... so learning the language of SilverLight itself isn't of an issue. To keep long story short, when asking this question I'm asking it as a developer who's coming from Flash world - great graphics/sounds/media support, fully cross-platform, ability to combine several SWFs within a "movie" (which also implies code reusability). A Flash developer have pretty much freedom. What are most important things that i must know in order to jump into silverlight development? Did you already make the move to SilverLight from Flash yourself? Are you a "guru" at both? Great, let's hear what you have to say - developer to developer! =)

  • Merging Brach into Trunk...

    Now I know this has been asked a few times, but i'm still not getting it... I use Versions which is doing a great job, I am also using beansalk and they are working nicely together. However, I have been working on a branch of the trunk (sandbox) which I now want to merge back into the trunk. Versions can't do this, so it's into Terminal. Sandbox is reversion 256 and the Trunk (because of a few other amends) is 255. Any help on this would be great, and read a few bits, but still a little lost...

  • problem with iOS 4.2 when user press the list view item to go to UIwebview page and the navigation button disappears on the second visit

    My app is a Navigation based application. The main menu contains the list view items. if I clicks one of them, it goes to next view which in this case take me to UIwebview embedded web site. Everything is looking great. I can view the content of web page, the navigation control back button which takes to the main menu if I press it. However, I'm having issue when I try to go back to main menu if i visit that subview the second time. It loads the content of UIwebview web page, but the navigation button is gone and won't let me go back to main menu. This problem only appears on latest iOS 4.2 version. Otherwise it works great on 3.1 to 4.1. I would appreciate any hints or inputs. Note this seems not working for subview using UIWebview embedded web content. I don't have any issue with other subviews

  • Should I still use querystrings for page number, etc, when using ASP.NET 4 URL Routing?

    I am switching from Intelligencia's UrlRewriter to the new web forms routing in ASP.NET 4.0. I have it working great for basic pages, however, in my e-commerce site, when browsing category pages, I previously used querystrings that were built into my pager control to control paging. An old url (with UrlRewriting) would be: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17 I now have a MapPageRoute defined in global.asax as: routes.MapPageRoute("category-browse", "Category/{name}_{id}", ~/CategoryPage.aspx"); This works great. Now, somebody clicks to go to page 2. Previously I would have just tacked on ?page=2 as the querystring. Now, How do I handle this using web forms routing? I know I can do something like: http://www.mysite.com/Category/Arts-and-Crafts_17/page/2 But in addition to page, I can have filters, age ranges, gender, etc. Should I just keep defining routes that handle these variables, or should I continue using querystrings and can I define a route that allows me to use my querstrings like before?

  • how do i install a game patch on an external hard drive

    I have a 2tb external hard drive and I want to install battlefield 1942 on it. i can get the game on the hard drive without problems, and it runs great. the problem is that i have an outdated version, and i need to install a patch. thats when it gets iffy. i get the patch and start the install, and it finishes, but it doesnt install to the game itself. it goes to its own seperate folder, and that does nothing to the game. the patch installer doesnt ask me where the game is, and so im thinking that it cant find the game itself, and then screws up. any help would be great!

    I always assumed that changing the value of k from "x" to 20 would eliminate "x". So why then in this example are we able to go back and reference "x"? a = {} k = "x" a[k] = 10 print(a[k]) ---> Returns 10 print(a["x"]) ---> Returns 10 a[20] = "great" k = 20 print(a[k]) ---> "great" a["x"] = a["x"] + 1 print(a["x"]) --> 11 Why does that last print command work, and return 11? I thought we set k = 20. Why is "x" even in the picture?

    so when my url looks like this: http://mywebsitehere.com/?kw=1 I am using this code below to do stuff with it: <?php if( isset($_GET['kw'] )){ //my div here } ?> It works great, and I am getting exactly what I want on the page. However, any link I click on that page will change the url structure and remove the ?kw=1 . Is there anyway to add the ?kw=1 to every link for that session? I have no clue how to do this?     This is not a technical question, but rather a social and methodical one. I am a computer sciences student and I usually have really tough programming assignments. I don`t know if it is only happening to me but sometimes, particularly when deadline is approaching, i find myself in a harsh situation. I cannot find my mistake in the code or come up with a another great idea. Then boredom comes in and the problem begins to seem unsolvable. I know there are more-than-great professional coders here. I would like to learn their ideas to cope with this situation. Is it better to focus on something else for a while and try again or try harder and harder and look for the solution on the net etc...

  • How do I create a no-javascript url hash handler for my website?

    Ok, I'm not sure how this is normally done. But I've got a script that basically empties a div of content and then loads content from a div from a separate webpage, without reloading the current page. This works great. It's taken from this example actually, from net tuts (great site btw) http://nettuts.s3.amazonaws.com/011_jQuerySite/sample/index.html And the guy who wrote this even though about handling the url's since the url don't change when using his method. So he wrote a javascript snippet that looks up the url and loads the content accoringly. Which is not working btw. But I was thinking about people who don't have javascript enabled, or iPhone and iPad users ;) Copying URLs and sending to a friend won't work at all. So how is this typically done? And can it be done without javascript? Possibly by php?
