• Integer comparison as string

  Hi I have an integer column and I want to find numbers that start with specific digits. For example they do match if I look for '123': 1234567 123456 1234 They do not match: 23456 112345 0123445 Is the only way to handle the task by converting the Integers into Strings before doing string comparison? Also I am using Postgre regexp_replace(text, pattern, replacement) on numbers which is very slow and inefficient way doing it. The case is that I have large amount of data to handle this way and I am looking for the most economical way doing this.

• Margin animate problem with Monitor display settings

  I have an issue with an animation on a webpage. I have this div with text inside of it that I set the margin using css and when the page is loaded I use jquery to animate the div to a certain part of the page. The problem is it works with my concrete pixel settings, but if I change the properties of the monitor display settings in screen resolution(pixels), the div does not animate to the appropriate spot and it doesn't even start off at the appropriate spot from the css. Sample code: #div{ position:absolute; top:20px; left:50px } $("#div").animate({marginLeft: "250px"},2000); Is there a way to have the settings of the animation margin end at the approriate position no matter what the screen resolution is?

• Preserve images in Excel headers using Apache POI

  I am trying to generate Excel reports using Apache POI 3.6 (latest). Since POI has limited support for header and footer generation (text only), I decided to start from a blank excel file with the header already prepared and fill the Excel cells using POI (cf. question 714172). Unfortunately, when opening the workbook with POI and writing it immediately to disk (without any cell manpulation), the header seems to be lost. • What stack would you use for a new web Java project if you started today?

• Simple javascript string problem in ie6 and ie7

  I have a very simple function that takes a list of comma separated (x,y) points and imports them into a graph. I have FF, Chrome and IE8 installed. In Chrome, FF and IE8, I don't see the "After if:" alert. In IE6 and IE7, I see the following two alerts: Data in: (52,16),(100,90) After if: undefined undefined The "Data in" alert matches in all browsers. Any ideas?

• A device specific alpha bitmap fails after switching resolutions in remote desktop

  All my alpha bitmaps, created using CreateCompatibleBitmap(..), start to receive an error code 87 after someone signs in with Remote Desktop. I am assuming that this is because the resolution changed and I am using a device specific bitmap. I am wondering what the best route is to fix this issue without migrating to a device independent bitmap? Some options are: 1) Detect remote desktop change and flag all bitmaps to be reloaded (I have done this but it does not work as well as I would like). 2) Wait for error code 87 to happen on an alphablend image that previously worked, and then reload it (was going to try this next, im sure it will work, but a little hacky) 3) Detect random event such as WM_DISPLAYCHANGE or _ that tells me when I should do this (ie: a device change event I'm guessing, or maybe something more specific?) 4) _? • What's the best way to check that environment variables are set in Unix shellscript

  I've got a few Unix shell scripts where I need to check that certain environment variables are set before I start doing stuff, so I do this sort of thing: if [ -z "$STATE" ]; then echo "Need to set STATE" exit 1 fi if [ -z "$DEST" ]; then echo "Need to set DEST" exit 1 fi which is a lot of typing. Is there a more elegant idiom for checking that a set of environment variables is set? EDIT: I should mention that these variables have no meaningful default value - the script should error out if any are unset.

Instead, I want a seperate function that will retrieve ALL emails from the inbox. This function will be used rarely. I wont be retrieving all mails all the time. Only when necessary. Thanks!

  Hello. As a not so experienced man in programming, I start to use netbeans PLATFORM. And I am really impressed by its power (for rich desktop app). I have been learning the programming in another way on university. I have never thought that something as powerful as nb Platform exists. My idea was that 30 people work on some rich desktop app for more than year to make it "beta". Now I know, that it is much more easier. But, I have never be satisfied with my own opinions about "something is best". I am still looking for better mouse trap. So the question is: What is most powerful IDE you know?   Let's say that i want make a request a to a web page which is hosted in Europe (i live in USA).My packets only consist the IP address of the web page, first the domain name to ip address transformation is done, then my packets start their journey through to europe. i assume that MAC addresses never used in this situation? are they? First, my packets deal with many routers on way how these routers communicate with each other?, are router addresses added to my packet headers ? Second, is there a specific path router to router comminication or which conditions affect this route? Third to cross the Atlantic Ocean, are cables used or... ?

  Hi, what would be the xpath for the following: Find all child nodes with a specific attibute value but starting from a node with a specific attribute value. This is kind of related to a question I posted earlier about parsing and rdf xml file - I thought I had solved it but not quite yet. For example I am trying to parse and grab all of the rdf:about attribute values. I have this working fine. I need to add the following condition though - parsing needs to start after a specific rdf:about value is found. I am working in php and and using DomDocument and am using the following xpath query: $xpath-query('//@rdf:about') - it is finding all rdf:about attributes fine. I need to extend this to only find thos attributes that come after the node who rdf:about attribute is equal to something. Hope this makes sense.

• PyQt: Get the position of QGraphicsWidgets in a QGraphicsGridLayout

  I have a fairly simple PyQt application in which I'm placing instances of a QGraphicsWidget in a QGraphicsGridLayout and want to connect the widgets with lines drawn with a QGraphicsPath. Unfortunately, no matter what I try, I always get (0, 0) back as the position for both the start and end widgets. I'm constructing the graph with a recursive function that adds widgets to the scene and layout. Once the recursive function is complete, the layout is added to a new widget, which is added to the scene to show everything. The edges are added to the scene as widgets are created. How do I get a non-zero position of any of the widgets in the grid layout?

• MATLAB for kids?

  My seven-years old expresses large interest in computers (well, who doesn't? :). Since I'm mostly program in MATLAB, I'm thinking why not to teach him MATLAB. We did a small project with him (he had to solve as many simple arithmetic problems as possible in a limited time) and he get pretty excited. I coded, he watched and then tested. He also likes to do create interesting graphics and simple animations. So, what's next? I would appreciate any ideas for interesting projects, games, graphics? What math concepts he has to understand to program in MATLAB? Or may be you would say it's too early and we should start with something like Logo, Scratch or Alice?

• Developer tool for configuring IIS6

  edit: IIS6; I'm not sure IIS7 is an option in the immediate future... From a developer angle, I am constantly changing my IIS settings, or need to merge settings from other teams into different VMs. The "Save Configuration to Disk" has never really worked well for me. Because we are making lots of small changes, web installation projects have never really worked either... Tools aimed for the web-admin aren't necessarily a good fit for the developer - we have different aims and needs. Does anyone have a script / tool / utility that would allow us to quickly configure IIS? In particular: remove everything (start clean) add a load of virtual directories, each mapped to application base paths set as an application set the app-pool (we'll assume the app pool already exists) set the ASP.NET version to 2.x if needed from some find of flat input list (any format would do).

• How can I extract URLs from plain text with Perl?

  I need the Perl regex to parse plain text input and convert all links to valid HTML HREF links. I've tried 10 different versions I found on the web but none of them seen to work correctly. I also tested other solutions posted on StackOverflow, none of which seem to work. The correct solution should be able to find any URL in the plain text input and convert it to: <a href="$1">$1</a> Some cases other regular expressions I tried didn't handle correctly include: URLs at the end of a line which are followed by returns URLs that included question marks URLs that start with 'https' I'm hoping that another Perl guy out there will already have a regular expression they are using for this that they can share. • Controlling maximum Java standalone running in Linux

  Hi, We've developed a Java standalone program. We've configured in our Linux (RedHat ES 4) cron schedule to execute this Java standalone every 10 minutes. Each standalone may sometime take more than 1 hour to complete, or sometime it may complete even within 5 minutes. My problem/solution I'm looking for is, the number of Java standalones executing at any time should not exceed, for example, 5 threads. So, for example, before even a Java standalone/thread starts, if there are already 5 threads running, then this thread should not be started; otherwise this would indirectly start creating OutOfMemoryError problems. How do I control this? I would also like to make this 5 thread as configurable. Other Information: I've also configured -Xms and -Xmx heap size settings. Is there any tool/mechanism by which we can control this? I also heard about Java Service Wrapper. What is this all about?

• How to exercise and feel well when programming?

  While I'm sitting here in my expensive chair which was told to me were gonna help me with my neck and shoulder pains; it didn't. So don't go spend $2,000 on a chair because it's not gonna help. I am trying everything to keep my body in shape, exercising to keep my pizza-body slim and just to feel well in general. What I'd like to do is take a couple of seconds, maybe when the code compiles, to reach up, do a couple of X and feel good. But, what is this X? When I sit there at work, what will everyone think when I stand up and start to hula hula because I want to exercise my basin? I know a lot of programmers out there do have pain so let's come up with a little list together to help us all keep our joints feeling good. Programming gives me joint pain, how do i avoid it without quitting programming?

• rdlc - phantom page break, what to check?

  I have a RDLC report which has some controls on the first page, which are inside a rectangle and which display ok. Beneath the rectangle, i have a matrix, which spans more than one page both in width and in height. I want the matrix to start rendering on the second page. If I enable "insert break before" on the matrix, there is an extra blank page before the matrix(in print layout), which is my problem. If I reduce the amount of data, so the matrix does not span more than one page in width, there is no blank page, and all is well. I checked the Page and Body sizes, they are ok. Any tips? This has been driving me crazy all day, what can I check? Thx
