• How to sell Agile development to (waterfall) clients

  Our development shop would really like to do more agile projects but we have a problem getting clients on board. Many clients want a budget and a deadline. It's hard to sell a client on an agile project when our competitors do come up with waterfall-based fixed deadlines and fixed prices. We know their fixed numbers are bad, but the client doesn't know that. So, we end up looking bad to the client because we can't fix the price or a deadline but our competitors can. So, how can you get your sales force to successfully sell a project that uses agile development methods, or a product that is developed using such methods? All the information I found seems to focus on project management and developers.

• A simple deployment example using Oracle Solaris 11

  Last week I was over in Melbourne and Sydney to present at an Oracle Technology Network System Administration Day. During a set of morning sessions, I presented on some of the new things that we've done in Oracle Solaris 11 and our focus for the future. One of the sessions I presented was giving a quick technical overview of what a typical application deployment scenario would look like using technologies like the Image Packaging System (IPS), Service Management Facility (SMF), Oracle Solaris Zones, and network virtualization. While it's just a simple example, it provides the basic building blocks for a more advanced configuration that a data center would typically deploy. Given these would likely be of general interest, I thought I'd upload the slides for others to view - enjoy!   I feel like when I am not writing, I am reading. When I come home from my programming job I write and read software and about software. The problem is though, both reading and writing requires my eyes to be focused. That doesn't work when I'm biking, cooking shopping for groceries. Sometime I use text-to-speech programs to listen to blogs, but I feel like there could be more. What ways can a software developer learn more without requiring eye focus? How to blind coders learn the craft?

• TDD, new tests while old ones not implemented yet

  I am experimenting with test-driven development, and I found that I often come to a following situation: I write tests for some functionality X. Those tests fail. While trying to implement X, I see that I need to implement some feature Y in a lower layer of my code. So... I write tests for Y. Now both tests for X and Y fail. Once I had 4 features in different layers of code being worked on at the same time, and I was losing my focus on what I am actually doing (too many tests failing at the same time). I think I could solve this by putting more effort into planning my tasks even before I start writing tests. But in some cases I didn't know that I will need to go deeper, because e.g. I didn't know the API of lower layer very well. What should I do in such cases? Does TDD have any recommendations?

  Alot of people say it is very hard to get a job at Google/Microsoft. Due to insufficient number of jobs, there is very tough competition for fresh graduates to get a job at the worthy company. I have read certain articles which encourage fresh graduates to have good projects (Programming projects), Focus on Accomplishments or have a good reputation on websites like this one. So my question is what kind of programming projects & accomplishments help in getting job at Google/Microsoft. • Zooming to point of interest

  I have the following variables: Point of interest which is the position(x,y) in pixels of the place to focus. Screen width,height which are the dimensions of the window. Zoom level which sets the zoom level of the camera.   An answer on How to disable HUD in Unity 2D? points to https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-2d/+bug/947613 where the ALT key will be made reconfigurable. Apart from emacs usage, I'm reasonably happy with using the ALT key to bring up the HUD. While using emacs though, the ALT key is tapped frequently to invoke commands. Should emacs be special cased with respect to the ALT key? I'm wondering what the situation is with games; surely lots of games repurpose the ALT key for their own use, e.g. to fire a weapon? If so, could the same be applied to Emacs, i.e. prevent the ALT key in emacs from triggering the HUD. Edit: just realized how extensively I use the ALT key in the terminal: a quick tap of ALT+B to move back a word loses focus of the terminal and brings up the HUD. Aghch

What if the focus of the webmaster/client is 100% set on the quality of the content with precise keywords in meta tags, clean design, regular articles updates, clean URLs and highly filtered external links leading to pages on websites dealing on the same,or related subjects; isn't it the job of a good search engine like Google to catch this website and show it in its front-page ? Or does Search Engines count on us to help them find us, and webmasters will always have to be up-to-date regarding SEO tools and rules updates on top of websites' design, browsers customization, progressive enhancement etc ?

  Are there any high level programming frameworks that allow me to run large amount of concurrent jobs schedully? e.g. I have 100K of urls need to check their uptime every 5 minutes Definitely I can write a program to handle this, but then I need to handle concurrency, queuing, error handling, system throttling, job distribution etc. Will there be a framework that I only focus on a particular job (i.e. the ping task) and the system will take care of the scaling and error handling for me? I am open to any language.

• Techniques to increase logic at programming

  I am into programming since last 3 years. But I seems to be lost in it. I am not able to get good at it even though I code everyday. suppose I solve one problem, I will wander from solution to solution and implement some other solution. I cant focus much. • How do I make the correct career decision in regards to product manager/QA vs programmer?

  I'm curious about how to approach the issue of whether I should focus on programming or on QA/testing/product management. I know that the latter seems like a broad category( if so, think of it as "general IT support" for now). At the moment I'm stronger in QA/prod. mgt ; however I'd like to switch more to programming, and I see I may have this opportunity. Wouldn't it be easier to switch to QA/prod. mgt in the future, if I go into programming now; rather than trying the reverse-order(i.e. if I decided later to go into coding.. say around mid-30s then it'd likely be harder). Just looking for any advice or tips about how to see more clearly. Part of me is scared I can't handle the programming side, but part of me says since there's demand and I'm interested that it's still worth a shot.

• Inputting cheat codes - hidden keyboard input

  Okay, here's what I want to do - when the player is at the main menu, I want them to be able to type in cheat codes. That's the only place I want it to work. I don't want to give them a text box to type into. Rather, I want them to simply type in a word (let's say "cheat", just for simplicity sake) that activates the cheat code. I only need to capture keyboard input when the window is in focus. What can I do to accomplish this?

  I've read many articles about SEO. I've tried to implement my knowledge on a site but I haven't gotten good results in 6 months. e.g.: I've used Google Webmaster Tools, sitemaps, title tags, keywords in paragraphs, etc. My Alexa rank is growing but Google detected some keywords that isn't my goal :-(. • From Java to Javascript? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Are there any OO-principles that are practically applicable for Javascript? 2 answers I am primarily a Java programmer. Because of its OO principles and the general paradigm of Java programming, like wrapping things in static variables, and having things return specific types, heavily aids me in "visualizing" a program. Instead of thinking of a big program, I can, instead, focus on smaller organized parts of my eventual program, and add functionality and build up from there. Thus, I have trouble programming in other languages. Or at least, I have not been able to program in the same ability as I do in Java compared to other languages. I know Javascript has OO principles, so I'd like to learn this language in a OO-based like I would program with Java. Is this possible?
