• RPC Fails but passing in SQL Man. Studios works

  I am calling a stored procedure from a web service in an ASP.Net application. And until a few days ago, all was well. However now when i call it I get an error saying The timeout period elapsed prior to the completion of the operation or the server could not be reached. However when i would run SQL SERVER PROFILER, I could see that the call was getting to the database, but was timing out. I then copied the statement being executed found at the bottom of the Profiler and pasted it into Management Studio and executed it and it finishes in about 7 seconds.. This runs just fine on our production server. It seems to be similar to this question: SELECT DISTINCT not working in .NET application, but works in SQL Mgmt Studio but I see no answer.

• Best practice for using web services (ASP.MVC)

  Basically what I have is web services returning data in xml format. Once I do a call to a webservice to retrive data from web service function (GetUserList) i want to take that data and then dymaically display (no postback) the resulting information. I know several ways of doing this: webservice sends data back to javascript, javascript then parses, replaces strings or text inside a div or child, or take the information retrieved and then put it into html table format through javascript. Those are some of the idea's i've came up with, does anyone know the best practice to do this? Using ASP.MVC (.Net)

• Resize the /var directory in redhat enterprise edition 4

  I am running NDB mysql. the log files fills up the /var directory. therefore i cant start the ndbd service now. as a temporary fix, i have deleted the log files and again working fine. but again the log files fill up the /var directory. i got plenty of space in other partition. therefore i would like to swap the partition from one directory to /var. here if my input from df -h Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 ext3 54G 2.9G 49G 6% / /dev/cciss/c0d0p1 ext3 99M 14M 81M 14% /boot none tmpfs 1013M 0 1013M 0% /dev/shm /dev/cciss/c0d0p2 ext3 9.7G 9.7G 0 100% /var there are plenty of space in /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00. Therefore i will like to swap 10 G space from this directory to /var. could you please help me out to solve this problem?

• Does the number of busy worker threads in the CLR ThreadPool affect performance of I/O threads?

  We have a Windows Service which hosts a number of WCF services and, in an unrelated part of the app, makes extensive use of the TPL Task class to asynchronously do relatively short bits of work. It is my understanding that WCF uses managed I/O threads from the ThreadPool to execute requests. I noticed that after deploying a feature which significantly raised the applications use of Tasks, and as such the use of ThreadPool worker threads as well, performance of a couple of web services has become very slow. We're talking minutes instead of less than a second. The number of Tasks actually trying to run at any one time can range between 20 and 1000, which makes me think that any new (last in) work needing some CPU time could be forced to wait for quite some time. Does the (in my case extremely large) number of busy ThreadPool worker threads affect the ThreadPool's managed I/O threads? Or could these two be connected in any way? Thanks!

  From a Service, I trigger a Notification which, when clicked, has to launch an Activity. To do this, I use the following code : notification=new Notification(icone,title,System.currentTimeMillis()); intent=new Intent(getApplicationContext(),myActivity.class); intent.putExtra("org.mypackage.name",true); intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK); pendingIntent=PendingIntent.getActivity(getApplicationContext(),0,intent,PendingIntent.FLAG_ONE_SHOT); notification.setLatestEventInfo(getApplicationContext(),title,"Message",pendingIntent); notification.flags|=Notification.FLAG_AUTO_CANCEL; ((NotificationManager)contexte.getSystemService(Context.NOTIFICATION_SERVICE)).notify("label,0,notification); When I click on the Notification, the Activity is correctly launched. But it's Intent doesn't contain the extra boolean added with the line intent.putExtra("org.mypackage.name",true);. Does anyone have an idea of this behaviour? I can add that I use Android 4. • Transform PDF to HTML, keep layout

  What methods are there to transform a PDF to HTML? It could be anything - online service, software, library. (Opensource preferred. In the last case, php or python would be preferred.) It has to keep the original layout (including page numbers, footnotes and such), keep the images (combining them to one single background image per page is acceptable) and keep the links. It should preferably output valid XHTML and clean up PDF features such as ligatures, but if there is some post-processing required, I can live with that. Something with a clean, relatively semantic HTML output would be great. The closest one I found was zamzar.org, but it choked on links. (Also, the HTML output is an ugly heap of absolutely positioned divs and needs post-processing because of encoding problems.)

• Exclude some parameters with POST request on RestKit

  I've just integrated RestKit with a Mac application for communicating with a web service. After much confusion, I have successfully got requests and responses working using it. The problem I am now finding is that when I want to make a POST request. I have created a RKRequestDescriptor with a mapping for a whole number of properties and all of the properties are being sent as parameters for the query. I want a way of dynamically changing the parameters that are sent, for example not sending some parameters where the property is nil. Is this possible as part of the built-in functionality of RestKit? And if so, how?

• Linux application that bundles multiple incoming audio and video streams into one container file?

  I've been assigned to implement a video on-demand service for a local university. Different aspects of the lectures (video, audio, screen cast, white board) will be recorded. During a lecture all these data streams arrive at one Linux server. This server should transcode and bundle all these streams into one container (Matroska) file. My options seem to be: Write a GStreamer application do something with FFMPEG do something with VLC ...? Has anyone done something similar in the past? Can you recommend something? Edit For those interested, here are a few of my findings: Matroska is not a good format for streaming (it's possible, but it's not its primary intent) For Flash streaming you can use MPEG4 If you want to combine different videos into one video where each subvideo occupies a rectangular portion of the total screen, then this GStreamer script is useful (I found it on this blog post). Desktop capture works fine with VLC

  I have a client that uses a point-of-sale solution involving an Access database for its back-end storage. I am trying to provide this client with a service that involves, for SLA reasons, the need to copy parts of this Access database into tables in my own database server which runs SQL Server 2008. I need to do this on a periodic basis, probably about 5 times a day. I do have VPN connectivity to the client. Is there an easy programmatic way to do this, or an available tool? I don't want to handcraft what I assume is a relatively common task.

• Cannot see response body in ie8 when response http status code is set to some error code(422)

  I am making a requset to a web service that sends custom error with proper HTTP header when I notice some validation error, this works fine in chrome and mozilla as things always do and then it broke in ie8 as it always does! After checking the network activity, I see that ie8 is not able to get response body when HTTP code is other that 200(or at-least it seems so). In groovy I am returning error like : render(status: 422, contentType: 'TEXT', text: ((errors as JSON) as String)) Is there a way I could somehow get ie8 to read in the response body, or as an alternative I might be able to set response header but before trying that I was wondering if you guys have already seen this issue and know a solution to it.   on larger projects i use a simple bug tracking system that's designed to be used by clients i have a lot of trouble convincing clients to use it (they send bug reports via email) does anyone have any strategies they can suggested? also, i have been playing around with a theory as to why this is the case; it goes like this: asking a client to log a bug is like taking your car to a mechanic for a service, and the mechanic hands you the engine oil and says "here, pop that in". basically, the client has paid you to do the work, logging a bug sounds too much like work, so they want you to do it thoughts?

• Javascript form validation/sanitizing do i need regex here ?

  I have a single form input that is for checking domains. Sometimes people type in www. before the domain or .com after the domain name. The service that i use to check availability automatically checks for all top level domains so when people add the .com at the end it becomes redundant. For example the string submitted is domainname.com.com which is clearly invalid. I understand you can do this on the server side but due to some rather weird circumstance i must use javascript for this. So is regex the solution here ? If so is there some kind of regex generator i can use for this or can someone point me in the right direction with a code snippet perhaps ? Appreciate any help thanks!

• How to turn off Video Acceleration programatically.

  Im using the Windows Media Player OCX in a program runned on hundreds of computers (dedicated). I have found out that when video acceleration is turned on to "full", on some computers it will cause the video to fail to play correct, with green squares between movies and so on. Turn the acceleration to "None" and everything is fine. This program is runned on ~800 computers that will autoupdate my program. So I want to add to the startup to my program that it turns off the video acceleration. The question is, how do I turn off video Acceleration Programatically? All computers are running XP and at least the second service pack. It would take me ages to manually logg in to all those computers and change that setting so thats why I want the program to be able to do it automagically for me.

  I'm writing my first location based android app, but got confused about some of the GPS service api. Here are some questions I have: 1) To get my current location, I called requestLocationUpdates() with a listener in the onCreate() method of one activity. But what happens when another activity starts and the current activity goes invisible? Is the GPS location update going to stop? If so, how do I keep it on after the activity is switched? 2) how accurate is the Location.getSpeed()? How is it computed? Can it tell the difference between on bicycle and on foot? 3) not really a question about android. How to calculate the coordinates of a location, say, 100m away from my current location? 4) To stop the GPS, I only need to remove all the listeners that have been registered to locationmanager?   Replicating a production server's Active Directory is possible through a number of approaches as mentioned here and here. I'm looking for a simpler approach if one exists. I have a mixed-mode authentication site that I need to test. Quite simply AD users (internal) will have more privilege's than someone who logs in via forms (external). We have a web service that cache's an AD structure (users & groups). I'm thinking of building a module (http handler I guess?) that will pick up my specially formed URL (http://impersonateduser@localhost/mywebapp) and use the bit before the @ as the username. That will be the username I use for any subsequent operations. How does that sound? Has anyone got other proposals for testing scenarios like this?

• Bind a WPF combobox and get selecteditem to a richtextbox

  Hi, I am using a dataset on the server, in this dataset I have a datatable that calls a stored procedure and returns column names from three tables. I call this stored procedure using a web service. I manage to show all the column names in my combobox but when I want to click a button and insert selected column name into a richtextbox I get System.Data.DataRowView in the textbox instead. • Sharing code between sqlite-net and servicestack ormlite?

  I am using sqlite-net to store data on my MonoDroid mobile application. I am wanting to sync this data with a server side service as well. Would it be possible to share the code for my Entity objects between sqlite-net and Servicestacks ormlite? The main difference between the two that I can see is declaring the "using namespace" statements at the top of the class for the object. Is it possible to detect the platform and set the using statements based on the platform? The other difference would be referencing the different dlls for servicestack so I suppose on the mobile app it would not compile if there are references to the servicestack namespaces... What would a good approach be to achieve sharing of this code?

Sender is CLIENT at 127.0.0.1:2680 Packet ID:0-1 POST /yada/yada HTTP/1.1 Content-Type: text/xml; charset=UTF-8 SoapCompressed: true Accept-Encoding: gzip,gzip;q=1.0, identity; q=0.5, *;q=0 SOAPAction: "" Accept: */* User-Agent: Apache CXF 2.2 Cache-Control: no-cache Pragma: no-cache Host: localhost:9090 Connection: keep-alive Transfer-Encoding: chunked I'd like to turn SoapCompressed off in my dev environment so that I can see the SOAP on the wire. I've searched Google and grepped the CXF source code, but don't see anything in the docs or code that reference this. Any idea how to make the client send "SoapCompressed: off" instead, without routing it through Apache HTTPD or the like? Is there a way to configure it at the CXF client, in other words?
