• Downloading a repository for local use

  I'm trying to get Thunderbird working in such a way that it will properly work with Kolab groupware. For that I need it to be in a fixed setup of Thunderbird and add-ons (Lightning, SyncKolab) without automatic updates and I need to present version of Thunderbird to be available for the users. What I hope to achieve is that the repository for Thunderbird as it is now on http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/thunderbird-stable/ will be available on my local server so I always use that version even if Thunderbird goes to a new stable version. What I hope to achieve is this: - I copy the content of http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/thunderbird-stable/ to my server - I make it available as a repository on my network I neither know if this is possible or allowed under the license etc.

• Super slow time machine backup on my mac

  I just got a new 2TB drive which I'm trying to use as a time machine drive for my mac which has a 1TB drive. On my first time trying to back it up, I'm getting terrible throughput, not even 1GB per day (it's been running for 36 hours now). I erased the disk and tried to copy a large file to it and got the same slow speed. What can I do to diagnose this? Are there any tools which can inspect the disk and tell me if it's messed up? • Exploring other windows 8 machine's root

  (Note, this is without a domain.) I used to be able to type start \\other_machine\c$ in PowerShell and explorer would pop up with a login dialog. Then I'd type other_machine\moswald and my password (the account is a local admin, of course) and I'm in. Now both machines have Windows 8 installed, and this no longer works (the dialog re-prompts with an "Access is denied" displayed). I've verified (through whoami) that the user is named other_machine\moswald, and I'm positive I'm typing the correct password. So what gives? (edited to include specific result)

• Remote access and local access same hostname

  Hi serverfault, I have a server in a clients network, seperated from theirs with a router/firewall, the intention is to have this server available through one hostname (example.com) My idea is to have (at least) a DNS server in the outside, to have outside (out of the clients' network) access the internal server. The problem would at that point be the internal client (PC A) My question: What would I have to do to make something like this work? Is it even possible or already done? The goal is to not have to change anything on either PC A or PC B, while both should access the same "internal server" while surfing to "example.com" Perhaps adding logic to the DNS server would work (Detect the external IP of internal client [PC A] is the same as the IP for example.com - Give the local IP as reply?) • Accessing localhost:8080 through local network

  I'm developing a Python WSGI website. I'm running a Paste development server on my Mac (OS X 10.7) on port 8080. I want to test the website on some other devices and OSs I have connected to the local network (Windows 7 VM, iPad, iPhone, etc.), but am having trouble. I turned on Web Sharing, and am able to access that (port 80) without a problem on all my devices. Port 8080 still doesn't work. An excerpt from my Paste configuration: [server:main] use = egg:waitress#main host = 127.0.0.1 port = 8080 The OS X firewall (Settings - Security - Firewall) is off. I have no other firewall software installed. My network is through a Linksys WRT160N router. I haven't done much with the settings, so most of them are at their defaults. I've been Googling all morning, but can't find a solution.

• Moved VM doesnt work correctly on my Ubuntu machine

  Hi I have a Windows 7 VM that I have moved onto my Ubuntu 64bit host machine that is running VMware player 3.1.0. I think the VM was created on a Windows host. The problem I have is that when I login to this VM the screen goes blank and stays that way. The login screen is fine, but the desktop never correctly appears and sort of shows some strange pixelation that is all distorted. Seems like a virtual video card issue? If I boot into safe mode the desktop appears fine. Any ideas? Thanks

• Recover a Parallel Desktop 3 virtual machine in VirtualBox

  I have an old HDD image file that was used with Parallels Desktop 3. Ideally I'd like to use it in VirtualBox (conversion). In all the tutorials I found (like this one or that one) the VM must be started: there's the problem. I don't have the machine where Parallel 3 was installed anymore. I tried installing the trial version of the last version of Parallels (9) but it seem it doesn't offer the possibility to import an old VM. So here's the question: Given I can't boot the VM with Parallels Desktop, is there a way to convert the image file to another format that is bootable in VirtualBox? If it changes anything, the host is MacOS X 10.9, the guest is Windows XP.

• caches domain user on local PC

  We have a fully working domain in UK and around the world we have user who use VPN ( checkpoint) to connect to or domain. One of the user in USA has a laptop which he never logged on to before ( it does caches the user login details). Does anyone know how to cache user login information on this laptop. I have tried netdom trust to add this user to the laptop but i was not able to do this. At the moment user is logging in with a local administrator account and then using VPN to log on to our domain but when it comes to accessing files on domain user get access deieded. When user try to login it gets There are currently no log on servers available to service the logon request Does anyone know how to add user.

• Putty freezes at random when logging into a remote machine in another continent

  I have to ssh to a remote machine in Europe from Asia every day for my work. But Putty freezes sometimes at totally random times and I have no choice but to close and re-open a new ssh session. It's frustrating especially when I'm editing something or executing a long running program. I know the question really doesn't have much details ('cause nothing seems to be wrong with the network at all). Has anyone experienced this sort of issue with Putty and had resolved it?   I set up a server with Postfix/Dovecot on Linode/Ubuntu 10.04 according to this guide, admittedly I've never done this before. Local mail works just fine, but trying to send email to it from external addresses results in errors like this: Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: <address>@ni-mate.com Technical details of permanent failure: Google tried to deliver your message, but it was rejected by the recipient domain. We recommend contacting the other email provider for further information about the cause of this error. The error that the other server returned was: 553 553 Unknown recipient. (state 13). I honestly have no idea what to do or which configuration files/logs anyone needs to see.

• Thunderbird 3 not displaying email in local folder

  I installed TB3 on a new computer set up to use imap to get my gmail -- works fine I copied all of my existing emails from old computer into the appdata directiry fir thunderbird local folders. All files are of the right size that I know the data is present When I run tb on the new computer all of the FOLDERS show up under LocalFolders. 5, BUT BUT BUT, when I click on any folder, all I get is a blank -- no emails are shown. additional info: Bitdefender DOES see the missing emails because one or two are tagged as suspicious But Windows 7 search is NOT seeing the missing emails. Can anyone instruct me on how I can get tbird to show the old emails ??? thanks

• Using the same local folder for Dropbox and Skydrive

  Ever since I switched to windows phone I've sorely missed having an official dropbox app. Recently I've toyed with the idea of moving all my crucial files to SkyDrive instead. I have more storage on SkyDrive and the WP SkyDrive integration is very handy. I'm thinking about having both cloud sync services point to the same local folder for the first few weeks. That way if I want to go back its an easy task (and I can keep using dropbox's superior public folder) Has anyone else done this? Are there any potential issues (permissions, conflicts etc)

• Connecting a Windows 7 client to local Mac OS X server

  I was previously able to connect a Windows 7 client to the local Mac OS X server without any issues. Then due to internet connection issues, the router had to be reset. Since then the Windows 7 client has not been able to properly connect to the locacl Mac OS X server. Within Windows Explorer and the Network and Sharing Center, the server shows up in the Network lists, but does not show any folders or files when I click to connect. There are no error messages appearing either. Any ideas what I can do to resolve this?

• Detach Disk from deleted virtual machine

  I had an Virtual Machine running in Azure for a couple of weeks and suddenly it stopped responding. I shut it down and tried to restart it but that failed saying the VM faulted. I then deleted the VM which leaves the VHD file intact on my storage account. I was intending to try recreating a new VM using thie VHD from the first VM however, the OS disk and Data disk are both still marked as being attached to the original VM which no longer exists. Is there any way to detach these disks so I can use them to create a new VM?

• Setup IPv4 local on IPv6 VPS

  I have a dedicated server running multiple IPv6 only OpenVZ containers. I want them to be able to communicate with the IPv4 internet, but I realized that isn't going to be possible with IPv6 only. So they need to have an IPv4 address as well, not sure if a local address will work for it, but pretty sure it should. I added 169.254.1.100 in the container .conf file, but when I try to start it, I get this : Adding IP address(es): (the IPv6 address) 169.254.1.100 arpsend: 169.254.1.100 is detected on another computer : 00:04:9b:f2:b0:00 vps-net_add WARNING: arpsend -c 1 -w 1 -D -e 169.254.1.100 eth0 FAILED I did a lot of research, and searched serverfault before posting this, but found nothing relating to this.

  I created a wireless network inside a D-Link DIR-301 connected to a Mac, What I want is that every device to connect to this network if the browser automatically opens instead of the default homepage, it redirects to my website already set in the localhost of the machine which also has the router attached. I'd also like to see that instead of the IP to connect to the site, there will be a "fake" link. What do you advise me? how can I proceed? • Exchange 07 to 07 mailbox migration using local continuous replication

  I have an existing Exchange Server ex0 and a fresh Exchange Server ex1, both 2007SP3. The servers are in different sites so users cannot access mailboxes on ex1 as from my understanding, a standalone CAS is required for this. I am thinking of doing the following: Enable local continous replication of the storage group on ex0 to a mapped drive that points to the corresponding storage group folder on ex1 At some point when the replication is done (small number of users and volume of mail), say on a late night on the weekend, disable CAS on ex0 (or otherwise redirect requests on the server-side from ex0 to ex1) AND change the public DNS name of the CAS so that it points to ex1. Will my plan work? If not, please explain what I can do to fix it.

• Running Debian as a Virtual Machine Host

  I have a need to run a linux server to host subversion, bugzilla over Apache and also act as a file and print server. I also have a need to host Windows Server 2008 virtual machines for development purposes (I'm a .NET guy). The machine I have is a dual core AMD 2.5 Ghz w/2GB RAM. So here are my questions: 1) Should I run Debian (or some other distro) as the base AND create a Debian VM to host subversion, bugzilla and be my file/print server? or is it ok to use Debian as both my VM host and for those other reasons? 2) VMWare has a free server edition, Virtual Box also is another free option. Which one of these is better suited for what I need to do? Are there any other free (or inexpensive) alternatives out there? 3) Will I need a GUI with Debian in order to manage my VMs? 4) Can I run VMs without a GUI to conserve system resources?

• How to tunnel local port through proxy server?

  I have a non-proxy-aware program that I need to get working through an HTTP proxy server. The program (MYPROG) running on a machine I can configure at will (MYSRV) connects to a specific server (DESTSRV) on a specific port (DESTPRT). There is an existing HTTP proxy server (PROXYSRV:PROXYPRT) that will allow the traffic through if MYPROG was proxy-aware, but it isn't. Is there a way to listen locally on a specific port and forward the traffic through the proxy server? I can totally configure where MYPROG points to, so I could point it to MYSRV:4545 with the thought that some wonder program will redirect the data to DESTSRV:DESTPRT through PROXYSRV:PROXYPRT. I'm thinking IP Tables or netcat could do the trick if only I could figure them out... Thanks!

• Cannot SSH into Virtual Machine

  I am running a CentOS VM on my desktop that I use for development testing when coding in python. At my school I have a dedicated IP setup for the VM and my desktop so I never seem to have an issue ssh'ing from desktop into VM. I am now at home for winter break and cannot seem to SSH into the VM using the local ip address behind my router, the external IP with port 22 forwarded to my VM, or anything. Strangely enough I can ssh into my production server and then fromt here ssh into the VM, but not from my desktop to the VM directly What should I do to get this to work? Thanks

  I am trying to deploy an executable and execute it on remote Unix machine(Linux/Solaris) from Linux without entering the password manually. I tried scp and also SSH key-gen utility to interact with remote server but in either way i couldn't avoid providing the password manually. Since I need to run this command/utility from Java code, I should completely avoid prompting for the password at run time. I have gone through many topics in google but nothing has been materialized. • Unable to sunchronize local and remote directories ("set times: Operation not permitted")

  I'm running into FTP errors using software like NetBeans or WinSCP: whenever I attempt to perform a synchronization or update of files from local -- server I get errors on the client saying "set times: Operation not permitted". This is clearly an issue with the way I've configured my Fedora installation. The user that I'm logging in with cannot touch -t any of these files, though he IS part of a group that has r/w access on the files. I do have root / sudo access to this server. What I would like to know is: a) is it likely that this problem would be solved by allowing my FTP user to "touch -t" these files b) how do I enable a certain user to be able to set timestamps on files without giving them ownership of the files (certain of these files need to be owned by Apache, for instance, so I don't want to chown them). • Accessing large log files on a unix machine with textpad

  Hi, I'm interested to access large log files on a unix server with textpad. (textpad for history reasons, i personally prefer ofcourse less awk grep etc) but I have many personal who rather be using textpad they have years of experience with it and can tweak it to do whatever they want. The problem is that if i connect for example with winscp to get the log files to textpad it first fetches the full log and user needs to wait and it bloats etc. I would rather the textpad to somehow access the unix machine and get only the relevant segment of the log file (large log files could be GB) anyone knows how can this be achieved?
