  • Doubling a number - shift left vs. multiplication

    - by ToxicAvenger
What are the differences between int size = (int)((length * 200L) / 100L); // (1) and int size = length << 1; // (2) (length is int in both cases) I assume both code snippets want to double the length parameter. I'd be tempted to use (2) ... so are there any advantages for using (1)? I looked at the edge cases when overflow occurs, and both versions seem to have the same behavior. Please tell me what am I missing.

  • Count number of results in a View

    - by Jukebox
I need to count how many people belong in pre-defined groups (this is easy to do in SQL using the SELECT COUNT statement). My Views query runs fine and displays the actual data in my table, but I simply need to know how many results it found. However there doesn't seem to be a COUNT option in views. I am guessing I am going to have to use some sort of views hook, and then stick the result in the table. Here's a quick example of what i'm trying to achieve: My Table ---------------------- Group A | 20 people Group B | 63 people and so on. (I've tried using the Views_Calc module, but I get errors because it is not quite stable yet.) Anybody know of an easy way to count results in Views?

  • Performance implications of using a variable versus a magic number

    - by Nathan
I'm often confused by this. I've always been taught to name numbers I use often using variables or constants, but if it reduces the efficiency of the program, should I still do it? Heres an example: private int CenterText(Font font, PrintPageEventArgs e, string text) { int recieptCenter = 125; int stringLength = Convert.ToInt32(e.Graphics.MeasureString(text, font)); return recieptCenter - stringLength / 2; } The above code is using named variables, but runs slower then this code: private int CenterText(Font font, PrintPageEventArgs e, string text) { return 125 - Convert.ToInt32(e.Graphics.MeasureString(text, font) / 2); } In this example, the difference in execution time is minimal, but what about in larger blocks of code?

  • Getting number of days between [NSDate date] and string @"2010-11-12"

    - by grobald
Hello i have a question. in short: i need a function which receives [NSDate date] and string @"2010-11-12" and returns the amount of days between those two dates. more explanation: I need to store a date from a server in the format @"2010-11-12" in my NSUserdefaults. The meaning of this date is the expireDate of a feature in an iPhone App. Everytime i press on a button for this feature i need to check if the difference in days between the current time-[NSDate date] and @"2010-11-12" is greater than 0. That means tahat the feature is disabled. its making me crazy mabey its to dead simple.

  • Remove dash from a phone number

    - by zoom_pat277
What regular expression using java could be used to filter out dashes '-' and open close round brackets from a string representing phone numbers... so that (234) 887-9999 should give 2348879999 and similarly 234-887-9999 should give 2348879999. Thanks,

  • handling large number

    - by klw
Hello, this is actually an problem question from project euler site http://projecteuler.net/index.php?section=problems&id=3 Anyway I'm not out after the solution, but I probably guess you will know what my approach is. To my question now, how do I handle numbers exceeding unsigned int? Is there a mathematical approach for this, if so where can I read about it?

  • Existing function to slice pandas object by axis number

    - by Zero
Pandas has the following indexers: Object Type Indexers Series s.loc[indexer] DataFrame df.loc[row_indexer,column_indexer] Panel p.loc[item_indexer,major_indexer,minor_indexer] I would like to be able to index dynamically by axis, for example: df = pd.DataFrame(data=0, index=['row1', 'row2', 'row3'], columns=['col1', 'col2', col3']) df.index(['row1', 'row3'], axis=0) # index by rows df.index(['col1', 'col2'], axis=1) # index by columns Is there a built-in function that does this?

  • PHP function: find argument's variable name, and function calls line number

    - by Majid
    I want to do something like this for simplifying logging operations. Any idea what I should put in for ?[1]? and ?[2]?? function log_var($var) { $line = ?[1]?; $var_name = ?[2]?; $line--; $filepath = 'log-' . date('Y-m-d'). '.txt'; $message = "$line, $var_name = $var\n"; $fp = fopen($filepath, "a"); fwrite($fp, $message); fclose($fp); @chmod($filepath, 0666); return TRUE; } This how I'd use the function in code (numbers are assumed to be line numbers in actual code): 23 $a = 'hello'; 24 log_var($a); 25 $b = 'bye'; 26 log_var($b); And this is what I want to be written to the log file: 23, a = hello 25, b = bye

  • c permutation of a number

    - by Pkp
    I am writing a program for magic box. As the only way around it is brute force, I wrote a program to compute permutations of a given array using bells algorithm. I wrote in the lines similar to http://programminggeeks.com/c-code-for-permutation/. It does work for array of 3 and 4. It does not work for an arryay of 8 numbers (1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8). I see that the combination 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 gets repeated couple of times. Also there are other combinations that gets repeated. I see that certain combinations don't get displayed even. So could someone tell me what is wrong in the program below. Code: include<stdio.h> int len,numperm=1,count=0; display(int a[]){ int i; for(i=0;i<len;i++) printf("%d ",a[i]); printf("\n"); count++; } swap(int *a,int *b){ int temp; temp=*a; *a=*b; *b=temp; } no_of_perm(){ int x; for(x=1;x<=len;x++) numperm=numperm*x; } perm(int a[]){ int x,y; while(count < numperm){ for(x=0;x<len-1;x++){ swap(&a[x],&a[x+1]); display(a); } swap(&a[0],&a[1]); display(a); for(y=len-1;y>0;y--){ swap(&a[y],&a[y-1]); display(a); } swap(&a[len-1],&a[len-2]); display(a); } } main(int argc, char *argv[]){ if(argc<2){ printf("Error\n"); exit(0); } int i,*a=malloc(sizeof(int)*atoi(argv[1])); len=atoi(argv[1]); for(i=0;i<len;i++) a[i]=i+1; no_of_perm(); perm(a); }

  • Java Int Array - Number being stored are different from ones specified

    - by Danadir
Hey there, I have encountered the most weird problem ever in Java. When I am doing this: int []s = new int [5]; s[0] = 026; s[1] = 0011; s[2] = 1001; s[3] = 0026; s[4] = 1101; the numbers being stored in the array, seen from debug mode are different i.e. the numbers stored are 22,9,1001,22,1101. Can you give me some hints what might be wrong with this? Thanks in advance
