• Safe ASCII char to replace whitespace before storing

  My code passes a big bunch of text data to a legacy lib, which is responsible for storing it. However, it tends to remove trailing whitespace. This is a problem when I read the data back. Since I cannot change the legacy code, I thought about replacing the all spaces with some uncommon ASCII character. When I read back the text, I can replace them back. Is this a bad idea, considering that I cannot touch the legacy storage code? Which character can I use as a substitute? I was considering some char upwards of 180. There will only be spaces - no tabs or newlines - in the data. The data is alphanumeric, with special characters.

• jQuery model-view-controller vs Spring MVC

  my question is what potential problems or difficulties would be with implementing usual web app with somewhat reach user interface (multiple dynamic tabs, accordians and so on) using jQuery MVC approach with Spring REST vs using Spring MVC. Problems what I can think of could be: I will not be able to use Spring security fully, JavaScript coding could become hard to manage, any form verification becomes not easy to manage... what else? and does jQuery MVC with REST make sense at all? On other side jQuery with MVC and REST move all GUI concerns to JavaScript side (whether it is bad or not) and leave all data manipulation to server side.

• Importing data from a text file using python

  I have a text file containing data in rows and columns (~17000 rows in total). Each column is a uniform number of characters long, with the 'unused' characters filled in by spaces. For example, the first column is 11 characters long, but the last four characters in that column are always spaces (so that it appears to be a nice column when viewed with a text editor). Sometimes it's more than four if the entry is less than 7 characters. The columns are not otherwise separated by commas, tabs, or spaces. They are also not all the same number of characters (the first two are 11, the next two are 8 and the last one is 5 - but again, some are spaces). What I want to do is import the entires (which are numbers) in the last two columns if the second column contains the string 'OW' somewhere in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I want to change the date to be a different format. So final outcome will be: 789754654 COLORA SOMETHING1 01191937FYY076 2342423234SS323423 742784897 COLORB SOMETHING2 07222006FYY076 2342342342SDFSD3423 The columns are seperated by spaces not tabs. And the final file should have exact number of spaces as the original file....only thing changing should be the date format. How can I do this? I wrote a script but it will lose the original spaces and positioning will be messed up. file.each_line do |line| dob = line.split(" ") puts dob[3] #got the date. change its format 5.times { puts "**" } end Can anyone suggest a better strategy so that positioning in the original file remains the same?

• None of my Win Forms buttons work

  I have a windows form which connects to a SQL Server though a dataset. The form was working fine since my last compile. All of a sudden, none of my buttons work! The data is loaded on the form, all the tabs work fine, drop down boxes work fine, but the buttons are literally unresponsive to any clicks. I added a test button and I get the same results. I can visually see the button getting clicked but no events. Any ideas?

• Customized annotation problem

  I want my custom UIView (.Xib View) to appear when user tabs on pins (not apple's callOutBubble) and in that UIView there should be a button which fires an IBAction on touched down event. Therefore I have added an AddObserver method to MKAnnotationView. which responds to touch events over pin in MKMapView. I have also added 3 buttons over that XIB view, which have also assigned IBActions. But when I run my application, buttons in the customized annotation view are not responding to IBAction (Touch Down). Why does this happen, and how can I fix it? I need to call a method when those 3 buttons are tabbed.

• can not find out if the div element is already set in body in chrome extension

  in my chrome extension I got an div, which I will add to the body of the current tab. I am listening to chrome.tabs.onUpdated. If this event is called, I execute a script inside content_scripts. In this function there I´ll wait till the document is ready with jQuery $(document).ready(...). I try to access $("#div").length and sometimes it returns 1 and sometimes 0. It should added to the body, if it´s not already there. For some strange reasons, the onUpdated event is called twice on each page reload. Actually I found no way to check safely if the div was already added.

  I am getting the java.lang.NullPointerException on createTabContent for the following code. There are two tabspecs. When I called and set the tab , changed the tabs for the first time it is ok. But when i called again while I am on the second tab, its hit the null pointer exception for line : NoStudentText.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE); I will show No Student Text if there is no data for the student list. It shows the text for the first time call. • Can JQuery/JavaScript be used to write a substantial client side application?

  I have an unusual situation - I have an embedded video streaming device with a complicated UI, and I need to use an embedded web server to reproduce that UI through a web browser. I'm thinking of using JavaScript/JQuery on a C++ backend (I am NOT coding all this myself, I need to hire people for the grunt work). The embedded web server is much less powerful than a PC, so I want to write an application that runs the entire UI in the browser, and only communicates with the server to pass new program settings back and forth, get status updates from the device, and control video playback. In other words, the client gets one big page or a small number of big pages (effectively downloading the application), the application maintains significant local memory storage, and once the pages are first loaded the server never sends anything layout-related. The application has two rows of tabs to navigate ~40 menu pages, drag-and-select controls to pick cells in a grid, sorted lists, lots of standard data entry options, and it should be able to control up to 16 embedded video players at once (preferably VLC). Is this possible in JavaScript/JQuery with a C++ backend?

  I am attempting to use a few of the simple android examples for Tab Views. One thing i am attempting to do different than all the examples i've seen so far, is to not use a TabActivity. I am trying to use a normal activity, which means i need to retrieve the TabHost object some how, so i can add tabs and etc to it. How can this be done? If you wanted to retrieve a view, you can simply use findViewById(R.id.blah), but how can you retrieve the TabHost object in a similar manner?

• TPageControl tab area OnMouseEnter OnMouseLeave events

  Hello, I need to catch the "OnMouseEnter" and "0nMouseLeave" for a certain area of the TPageControl component. With that specific area I mean the whole "tab header" rectangle. The problem is, that the page control doesn't catch the messages (I'm catching internal control messages CM_MOUSEENTER and CM_MOUSELEAVE) in the "empty" space. The aim for me is to draw a small arrow in the right empty side when user hovers in the red framed area (and drawing is just piece of cake) and erase it when leaves this area. And I'm don't care about the overflow of the tabs (which causes to draw scrolling double button) - that will never happen.

• Finding all the URL requests from a firefox extension

  I am building a firefox extension. In this extension, I want to see the URLs of any new webpage that the user visits. The webpage can be in a different tab or window than the current tab that the user is viewing (this should also catch the URL of pop-ups). Is there a way to find when firefox makes a GET or POST request and grab the URL? An alternative that I am trying to avoid is going through all the tabs and manually check to see if they have loaded a new page. Thanks

But the 2nd and 3rd tab, does need a couple of seconds to get visually rendered, after I click them. I would like to launch them, after I've loaded my first tab, in background for pre-cache. Once they are loaded, I can switch quickly between them. So I am wondering how can I launch the 2nd and 3rd tab. They are intents loaded in the view area.

• Play/pause HTML 5 video using JQuery

  I am trying to control HTML5 videos using JQuery. I have two clips in a tabbed interface, there are six tabs in total, the others just have images. I am trying to make the video clips play when their tab is clicked and then stop when any of the others are clicked. This must be a simple thing to do but I cant seem to get it to work, the code I am using to play the video is: $('#playMovie1').click(function(){ $('#movie1').play(); }); I have read that the video element needs to be exposed in a function to be able to control it but can't find an example. I am able to make it work using JS: document.getElementById('movie1').play(); Any advice would be great. Thanks

• Visual Studio 2010 Zooming – Keyboard Commands, Global Zoom

  One of my favorite features in Visual Studio 2010 is zoom. It first caught my attention as a useful tool for screencasts and presentations, but after getting used to it I’m finding that it’s really useful when I’m developing – letting me zoom out to see the big picture, then zoom in to concentrate on a few lines of code. Zooming without the scroll wheel The common way you’ll see this feature demonstrated is with the mouse wheel – you hold down the control key and scroll up or down to change font size. However, I’m often using this on my laptop, which doesn’t have a mouse wheel. It turns out that there are other ways to control zooming in Visual Studio 2010. Keyboard commands You can use Control+Shift+Comma to zoom out and Control+Shift+Period to zoom in. I find it’s easier to remember these by the greater-than / less-than signs, so it’s really Control+> to zoom in and Control+< to zoom out. Like most Visual Studio commands, you can change those the keyboard buttons. In the tools menu, select Options / Keyboard, then either scroll down the list to the three View.Zoom commands or filter by typing View.Zoom into the “Show commands containing” textbox. The Scroll Dropdown If you forget the keyboard commands and you don’t have a scroll wheel, there’s a zoom menu in the text editor. I’m mostly pointing it out because I’ve been using Visual Studio 2010 for months and never noticed it until this week. It’s down in the lower left corner. Keeping Zoom In Sync Across All Tabs Zoom setting is per-tab, which is a problem if you’re cranking up your font sizes for a presentation. Fortunately there’s a great new Visual Studio Extension called Presentation Zoom. It’s a nice, simple extension that just does one thing – updates all your editor windows to keep the zoom setting in sync. It’s written by Chris Granger, a Visual Studio Program Manager, in case you’re worried about installing random extensions. • [MINI HOW-TO] Change the Default Color Scheme in Office 2010

  Like in Office 2007 the default color scheme for 2010 is blue. If you are not a fan of it, here we show you how to change it to silver or black. In this example we are using Microsoft Word, but it works the same way in Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint as well. Once you change the color scheme in one Office application, it will change it for all of the other apps in the suite. Change Color Scheme To change the color scheme click on the File tab to access Backstage View and click on Options. In Word Options the General section should open by default…use the dropdown menu next to Color Scheme to change it to Silver, Blue, or Black then click OK. Here is what Black looks like…who knows why Microsoft decided to leave the blue around the edges. This is the default Blue color scheme… And finally we take a look at the Silver color scheme in Excel… That is all there is to it! It would be nice if they would incorporate other color schemes to Office 2010, as some of you may not be happy with only three choices. • Add Enhanced Balloon Tooltips to Firefox

  The default balloon tooltip in Firefox does well at times but then there are instances when a person finds that more information would be much better. The Tooltip Plus extension for Firefox will give your browser that nice extra information boost. Before & After For our example we have placed the “before & after shots” together for better comparison. First off we started with the How-To Geek logo. Note: Does not display the original URL behind shortened URLs. Next we moved on to a permanently linked article title. The “Reviews Tab” in the How-To Geek website toolbar. The article tags listing just beneath the HTG website toolbar. And the link for subscribing to our RSS Feed. In each instance you could actually see the address behind the links. The Tooltip Plus extension will also help out with images in webpages (including “Alt Text” if present). Notice that the link for the image is now available for you to view. Options The options are extremely simple to work with. Decide if you want a document icon to display, the size of the icon, and if you would like “Alt Text” for images to be displayed or not. Conclusion The Tooltip Plus extension does one thing and does it very well…it gives you that extra bit of information when you need it. • My Ubuntu Touch seems to be broken no matter how many different files I try

  So I'm planning on testing out Ubuntu Touch, and developing some applications for it so I thought I would flash it to my Nexus 4 that was already unlocked, and running Paranoid Android and the kernel associated. I headed to Ubuntu's website, browsed around and came across this page: Touch/Install - Ubuntu Wiki I followed Step 1 perfectly, word by word. Its seems to me that everything on that part is fine. I skipped Step 2 having already done that for Paranoid Android, and then I follow 3 and 4 word to word also. Using the command phablet-flash -b everything seemed to be fine. So it booted up and all seemed normal, but it wasn't. Here are some major bugs that only seem to happen to me. So I was greeted with a normal lock screen: But one of the first noticable things on the home screen is that I only have 4 tabs, not 5: Some of the applications that are supposed to work do not (I know some are dummies) like here with the calculator, this is what I get: On the homescreen it is a black box, it will crash a couple of seconds later: Another annoying problem is that when I want to close apps, I have from right to left, if I close an app on the left first it will close it, but it will open the app to it's right, weird: Yet another bug, this one is in the pull down drawer, when you just click on it, you can see that not all the icons are there: Pretty much everything else works as it should, but my main problem is that there is no telephony, I'm not sure how it works exactly, but I'm never asked a SIM code (I'm guessing you need that?), I can't compose SMS's and can't dial numbers, it won't let me select the 'Send' or 'Call' button. I've after tried manual installs all over the place with these files: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-armel+mako.zip (Says 44MB on site - 46.6MB on my laptop) http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-touch-preview/daily-preinstalled/current/saucy-preinstalled-phablet-armhf.zip (Says 366MB on site - 383.2MB on my laptop) There are some weird size differences between what the site told me and what I downloaded, but I've tried re-downloading just to end up with the same file. And it just alway ends up with the same problems. No telephony and those weird bugs. So my question is, how the hell can I get the same version as everyone else, with the ability to send texts and call and open the calculator and more? • Add an Opera Style Status Bar to Firefox

  Anyone who has used Opera will be familiar with the information presented for the webpage that is currently loading in the browser (i.e. number of images loaded). If you would like to have that same functionality in Firefox then join us as we look at the Extended Statusbar extension. Before Here is the default setup for Firefox…not a lot of information available to indicate exactly how much of the webpage has already loaded versus what has not. For some people this is enough but what if you like more details? Extended Statusbar in Action You may be curious about the information that the Extended Statusbar extension will provide. The information includes: Percentage of the webpage loaded The number of images loaded Bytes downloaded Average download speed The load time After emptying the cache we once again reloaded the HTG homepage. The default style/mode is “Classic Style” and the “webpage load information” will be displayed within your “Status Bar” as shown here. The information available after the webpage finished loading in “Classic Style”. If you prefer “Slim Mode” this is how your “Status Bar” should look afterwards…very condensed. For those preferring the “New Style” a temporary addition will appear above your regular “Status Bar” and disappear just a few seconds after the webpage has fully loaded (unless changed in the “Settings”). Settings The “Settings” are set up in two different ways. For those who prefer to use the “Classic Style & Slim Mode” these are the options available to you. If you prefer the “New Style” then you will have a whole different set of options available. Notice that you can exclude certain webpages and set a custom style if desired. Conclusion If you have been wanting to add Opera style webpage loading information to your “Status Bar” then you should definitely give this extension a try.
