  In my class we are writing our own copy of C's malloc() function. To test my code (which can currently allocate space fine) I was using: char* ptr = my_malloc(6*sizeof(char)); memcpy(ptr, "Hello\n", 6*sizeof(char)); printf("%s", ptr); The output would typically be this: Hello Unprintable character Some debugging figured that my code wasn't causing this per say, as ptr's memory is as follows: [24 bytes of meta info][Number of requested bytes][Padding] So I figured that printf was reaching into the padding, which is just garbage. So I ran a test of: printf("%s", "test\nd"); and got: test d Which makes me wonder, when DOES printf("%s", char*) stop printing chars?

  Hello everyone: I am trying to analyze my agent results from a collection of 20 txt files here. If you wonder about the background info, please go see my page, what I am doing here is just one step. Basically I would like to take only my agent's result out of the messy context, so I've got this command for a single file: cat run15.txt | grep -A 50 -E '^Agent Name: agent10479475' | grep -B 50 '^==' This means : after the regex match, continue forward by 50 lines, stop, then match a line separator starts with "==", go back by 50 lines, if possible (This would certainly clash the very first line). This approach depends on the fact that the hard-coded line number counter 50, would be just fine to get exactly one line separator. And this would not work if I do the following code: cat run*.txt | grep -A 50 -E '^Agent Name: agent10479475' | grep -B 50 '^==' The output would be a mess... My question is: how to make sure grep knows exactly when to stop going forward, and when to stop getting backward? Any suggestion or hint is much appreciated.

• How are integers converted to strings under the hood?

  I suppose the real question is how to convert base2/binary to base10. The most common application of this would probably be in creating strings for output: turning a chunk of binary numerical data into an array of characters. How exactly is this done? my guess: Seeing as there probably isn't a string predefined for each numerical value, I'm guessing that the computer goes through each bit of the integer from right to left, each time incrementing the appropriate values in the char array/base10 notation places. If we take the number 160 in binary (10100000), it would know that a 1 in the 8th place means 128, so it places 1 into the third column, 2 in the second, and 8 in the third. The 1 in the 6th column means 32, and it would add those values to the second and first place, carrying over if needed. After this it's an easy conversion to actual char codes.

  Hi Everyone, I have a working Rails application on version 2.3.5 - I am using many to many model relations and have got almost everything working. What I would like to do is on my new kase page show the most recent kase job ref at the top. So for example, if I created a new kase with a job ref of "001", if I then went to create a new kase it would show at the top "Your previous kases reference was 001". I have the field of jobref in the new kase form, so I am trying to workout what I need to do to output only the last jobref. If that makes sense! Thanks, Danny

When I execute it, here is the output that I get : Hex value is 00 Hex value is 00 Hex value is 00 Hex value is 01 Chunk length is 0 Can any one please help me understand the error here. I would like the internal and external links to work. Ideally allow for tweaking the output template, but that is not a deal-breaker. I want to generate content using WIKI syntax and mindset (lots of cross-links etc), but ship the content in PDF, CHM or an embedded application form.   Here's what I'm doing (sorry for the variable names, I'm not using those in my code): File.open("out_file_1.txt", "w") do |out_1| File.open("out_file_2.txt", "w") do |out_2| File.open_and_process("in_file_1.txt", "r") do |in_1| File.open_and_process("in_file_2.txt", "r") do |in_2| while line_1 = in_1.gets do line_2 = in_2.gets #input files have the same number of lines #process data and output to files end end end end end The open_and_process method is just to open the file and close it once it's done. It's taken from the pickaxe book. Anyway, the main problem is that the code is nested too deeply. I can't load all the files' contents into memory, so I have to iterate line by line. Is there a better way to do this? Or at least prettify it?

• Making a DVD video with a still image and PCM 16bit audio with ffmpeg

  I'm trying to make a small video with a still image and a sound file playing in the background to pass it to dvdauthor and create a DVD. The command I'm using is this: ffmpeg -loop_input -i image.jpg -qscale 2 -i song.flac -aspect 4:3 -target pal-dvd -acodec pcm_s16le -shortest output.mpg However, the resulting video file doesn't have sound at all (testing it on VLC Player). I don't know if I can't combine "-acodec pcm_s16le" with "-target pal-dvd" to override the later, or if there is something else wrong with the command. If I try without the "-acodec pcm_s16le" parameter the video and audio works, I can even create a DVD ISO with it. However, the audio stays as AC3. I wanted to include with the video the lossless audio, not a compressed one. I suppose the DVD standart allows to have PCM audio in it, am I right?
