  • How to remove settings from a Microsoft Account Windows 8?

    When installing windows 8 for the first time, I did not create a microsoft account and just installed as the local user. However I recently updated to Windows 8.1 and it forces you to use a microsoft account. I did not want to create an account so one of my friends used his and I logged in. After logging in all the friend's details like apps, wallpaper, lock screen, search mechanism, when I use search i see the friends facebook friends popping up. it is really annoying. How can I remove all of this excess, as I have logged out of the microsoft account and am just using local user but these problems have persisted. Thanks

  • Can Android 1.6 devices be upgraded to Android 2.x for free?

    I'm a bit confused on what the license/deployment policy for Android is really like. Is it an open source OS in the same sense as let's say a normal Linux distro ? If I have an Android 1.6 device, can I simply install the latest version of Android on it free of charge, or is there a lot more to it ? I take it, it's not just a download and install workflow.

  • Office 2010 always reconfiguring itself on startup

    I've just installed Office 2010 Professional Plus (upgrading from Office 2007). It works fine under my admin account, but when I login with my wifes non-admin account, every time I open a document or start an app (Word, Excel, Publisher ...) Office 2010 goes through its configuration process (starting the the standard install dialog and then running the bootstrap process) before it loads the app - which wastes 2-3 minutes. Once it's done this, the app runs fine and I can make setting changes that are remembered when it restarts, but I can't work out why it thinks it needs to configure the app each time. Any thoughts?

  • Upgrading from MySQL Server to MariaDB

    I've heard that MariaDB has better performance than MySQL-Server. I'm running software that makes an intensive use of MySQL, thats why I want to try upgrading to MariaDB. Please tell me your experiences doing this conversion, and instructions or tips. Also, which files I should take care of for making a backup of MySQL-Server, so if something goes wrong with MariaDB, I could rollback to MySQL without issues?   • Xbox Music ignores Asus FN media keys in Desktop Mode

    I have an Asus PRO64JQ laptop, and I recently upgraded to Windows 8. The FN keys stopped working, so I tried to install default drivers using the CD that came with my laptop. Unfortunately, the CD does not support Windows 8. Asus Support does not help me either. It seems that Asus does not support Windows 8 on my model, since I can't find it in their list of Windows 8 upgradable models. Also, the support page of my laptop does not allow me to select Windows 8 as OS. That's why I'm asking my question here. I fixed (most of) the FN keys by installing the ATKPackage, and I was happy to find out that the media keys (play/pauze, next, previous) works with the Xbox Music app. But the keys only work in the Metro UI. In Desktop Mode, pressing FN+? (play/pause) starts up Windows Media Player. Disabling Windows Media Player through the control panel stops it from popping up, but Xbox Music still only responds to them in the Metro UI. I remember that I had similar problems when I tried to make these media keys to work with iTunes on Windows 7. The fix there was a small iTunes plug-in. So tell me, do you know how to fix my problem?   • What is the fastest CPU my laptop can support?

    I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop and would like to speed up compile times on it. I have confirmed that it is, indeed, the processor time that is the bottleneck. How can I tell what processors are compatible with the motherboard to pick the best available? I run dual boot Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7. lshw tells me that my motherboard is OHN338 from Dell, Inc. If anyone has a generic solution, i.e. "For motherboard X, here is how you find out what processors are supported," that would be make this question much more useful to future visitors. But if you also know of a way to find out specific to my model, that would be great as well.

  • Any Suggestions on How to Soup Up/ Mod a MacBook Pro 13"?

    So I've got a mid-2009 MacBook Pro 13". Integrated GPU so not a games machine but fast enough for doing .Net development in VMs. I love the little thing and wanted to give it a Christmas present so thought I'd mod it up a bit and give it a boost. I'm probably going to go for a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive rather than full-on SSD (I need 500GB space) but was wondering if there are any other mods/tweaks people could suggest? I saw something online about swapping a HDD for the DVD drive and wondered if anyone had tried this or similarly drastic mods to the smallest of the MBPs. Cheers.

    My questions are: 1) Where to buy it and what to buy? I have heard that this RAM is generic enough and it does not have to come from Apple. 2) Can I reuse my existing stick(s)? Would I have a single 2GB module, or 2 x 1GB modules? 3) If I have 2GB already, is it a good idea to have one old stick and one new one?   • Please define: "Maximum Memory Supported - 10GB, Service Upgradable Only"

    I am assuming this means that the RAM modules can only be inserted/removed from some place very inconvenient? Maybe under the keyboard? Or does this mean something more strict, as in the only way to get an upgraded module in the laptop is via some special toolset, or verified through the hardware to allow the system to recognize the new memory? I ask because I'd want to know if I need to buy my own additional RAM, since I can't seem to find a way to get to 8GB. A Google search result turned up very little other than hits for shopping.   • At what point does the performance gap between GPU & CPU become so great that the CPU is holding back a system?

    I know that generally speaking for gaming performance the GPU is the primary factor which holds back performance, with everything else such as RAM/motherboard/PSU/CPU being secondary in importance to the graphics card. But at some point the other components ARE going to be significant in holding back the whole system! For instance nobody would be silly enough to play modern games with 512MB RAM and the very latest graphics cards (such as an HD7970) as I bet the performance increase over such a system with only 512MB but a mid range card would be non-existent! Thus it would be a "waste" for such a person to buy any high end graphics card without resolving first the system's other problems. The same point applies to other components, such as if it only had a Pentium II a current high end graphics card would be wasted on it! So my core question is how do you determine at what point for your system is spending on extra GPU power be completely "wasted"? (also, a slightly more nuanced question is trying work out at what point might the extra graphics power not be "wasted" but would be "sub optimal" value for money, when the expenditure should then be split around graphics card and other components. As obviously a gamer shouldn't always just spend on upgrading the graphics card! But needs to balance it out)

    Here's the story: Company bought me a $599 Mac mini (as of this writing, 2.26GHz/160GB HD/2GB RAM) I have it set up to some extent with software for development Company decides it needs a second Mac for QA I convince company to buy the $799 Mac mini for the second machine (as of this writing, 2.53GHz/320GB HD/4GB RAM), let me have it for development, and let QA have the $599 Mac mini Company does just that, now I have both So, what's the best way to move from one of these to the other? Just set up everything on the second one and be done with it? Can I transfer things from the first to the second somehow? I'm running Time Machine backups to an external drive on the $599 Mac mini, if that helps. Also both of these will be on the network at the same time, other than renaming one of the machines are there considerations to be had there?

    Back in Windows 95 OSR2 (I believe), there was a conversion tool that would take your extant FAT16 partition and change it to FAT32 non-destructively (most of the time). Are there any tools like that now for going from one file system type to another in situ without destroying the data? For example, from etx3 to ext4? Or NTFS to XFS?

  • Mysterious "media" volume mounted on desktop Mac OS X

    I have a mysterious volume mounted on my desktop that I can't seem to forcibly unmount. I've tried using umount and also diskutil, but it seems to automatically remount itself. I've copied my hdd with Time Machine, and copied it onto a new computer, and it also has the drive mounted on it. It's not pointing to anything and I can't open it, nor can I forcibily remove it by hand with rm -Rf. Any ideas? I noticed this problem after I upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion. It causes problems because when I try to select a file using the built in Finder dialog box, it freezes for a few minutes because it tries to cache or read into the "media" mounted volume.

  • Clean Install: Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04 or somthing else?

    I'm faced with a pending clean install due to a dying hard drive in my old Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I've been running Ubuntu 8.04 on it since... 8.04 and I've been more or less happy with it except that it's a PITA to recompile the kernel or do any other kernel related work. I mostly do software dev on it, gcc, gvim, c/c++/perl/php/mysql and running vmware server 2.0. I've heard mixed reviews of 10.04, and am wondering what to put on the new HD. I'm even considering just sticking with 8.04 as it seems to mostly meet my needs. Any suggestions?

  • Maximum hard drive space for an Xserve G5

    At my college we're upgrading an Xserve G5 (RackMac3,1) to be a file server for some courses. Currently it has one sled with a 75GB drive. Obviously, this isn't enough. I've tried some Googling on this matter and I'm hearing a ton of different stuff - custom firmware, size issues, etc. So, for anyone who knows, what's the actual lowdown on this machine. We want to put in three 2TB drives using three standard sleds, replaced with third-party drives. Is this possible?
