• Advice on career change [on hold]

  I am a software developer(sharepoint developer) with total 3 years of experience.Though using out of the box sharepoint excites me, i have aversion to code. i kinda cant put my brains in coding. i have my eyes on MBA now(only reason is to get rid of code). I wanted to rethink on this and need your expert advice and suggestions. As i am working currently in a hot skill(sharepoint 2013) technology, is it a good thought to go ahead and do MBA and change my career, or should i start liking what i do?? • Cannot get past login screen

  I have lubuntu 12.04, and it was working fine until I installed something and I do not remember exactly what I installed because I was trying to build a ruby gem and it required a lot. now I rebooted and I cannot log in, well, I can but when I do LXDE apparently cannot continue and returns to the login screen. I created another user from my console screen (I can login there), and the other user can login. So I removed my .* directories from my home directory, but it did not help. Any suggestions?

• Best strategy to discover a web service in a local network?

  I am currently doing some research for a project. The setup is simple, I have a computer running a service in my home network and any device connected to that same network should be able to discover the service automatically and use it. I have no specific technology requirement whether it is on the server or client side. The client knows about the service definition. Other than that I have no idea what strategy to use, what technology to look at or whether I should go for a SOAP or a HTTP based service. I think going HTTP with REST API is the best for targeting all devices but I am opened to any suggestions. Thanks.

• Audio libraries for PC indie games [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Cross-Platform Audio API Suggestions What options are out there these days for audio playback/mixing in C++? Primarily for Windows, but portability (particularly to Mac and iOS) would be desirable. For a small indie game, potentially commercial, though - so I'm looking for something free/low-cost. My requirements are fairly basic - I don't need 3D sound, or many-channels - simple stereo is fine. Just need to be able to mix sound effects and a music stream, maybe decoding one or more compressed audio formats (.ogg/.mp3 etc), with all the basic controls over looping, pitch, volume, etc. Is OpenAL more-or-less the standard choice, or are there other good options out there?

• Caching preventing users seeing site updates

  I'm experiencing a caching issue I can't explain. This is happening across browsers, IPs and ISPs. If a user force-refreshes, they see the new content. If they then refresh or return to the page, the old one displays. I've tried using headers via PHP such as header( 'Expires: Sat, 26 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT' ); header( 'Last-Modified: ' . gmdate( 'D, d M Y H:i:s' ) . ' GMT' ); header( 'Cache-Control: no-store, no-cache, must-revalidate' ); header( 'Cache-Control: post-check=0, pre-check=0', false ); header( 'Pragma: no-cache' ); Laid out correctly, at the very beginning of the file. The problem persists. A pan-ISP proxy is unlikely. Suggestions?

• Cross-Platform Automated Mobile Application UI Testing

  My dissertation is about developing a tool for testing mobile applications from the GUI. Primary device is Android, but it should support Blackberry or iOs etc. I found some frameworks using Google, e.g MonkeyTalk. I am not so sure, but what I want to develop might be a mini MonkeyTalk, with minimal functionality, focused on the GUI of the application(s) to be tested. My questions: What framework(s)? I am good with Java. Can I use the xUnit family for this, and how? What should I be reading/studying? Any suggestions, links for tutorials, documentations, howtos, etc., would be very helpful. • How can I access old KMail emails after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10?

  I initially installed Ubuntu 11.04 and used KMail for my email. All well and good. Then I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10. Presumably an upgrade of KMail took place as part of this. Now KMail won't even run; when I try, it tells me "Failed to fetch the resource collection" and crashes. I don't mind switching to another email client, but I'd very much like to be able to recover all of the emails I have stored in KMail. Any suggestions on how to do this?   I have some customers, who expect everything for next to nothing. They also want things to be a certain way, or look a certain way, but when explaining to them why it's not a good idea, and offering suggestions, they don't listen. When things go wrong, they get moody, and demand I do something about it, but when told that it's because they wanted it that way, they don't listen. I've found that after years of being around these types of people, it's had a major impact on the way I deal with people I can't stand, and I've seriously run out of ideas. How do you deal with people who never listen, never learn, and want everything for free?

• Backing up VPS and Database Servers for website

  I currently have an "un-managed" (no help from hosting company) windows vps server. I am working on a good backup solution to return my site back online within a few hours. I am pretty comfortable backing up and restoring my database, however what is a good solution for backing up my VPS for easy recovery? Should I just use windows backup and create an image? I'm open to suggestions. Additionally, has anyone had to restore an entire VPS before? Is it reasonable to have it back up and running in a few hours?

• After 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade, can only login via Classic (No Effects)

  Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, everything seemed to go okay until immediately after login: the desktop goes into a "corrupted" looking state (similar to having too high resolution set). I can see some kind of movement by moving the mouse around/right clicking, and can enter text terminals via ctrl + alt + f1 It does this in both plain "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic", and only seems to login/startup properly with Ubuntu Classic (No Effects). I have checked my video card (Radeon X600) and run the unity support test which passes with all "yes" results (Unity supported: yes): /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p I have tried re-installing my Ubuntu desktop: rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop With no success. I can workaround for now with Classic (No Effects), but I'd really like to find the root problem. Any suggestions on what else to try would be appreciated!

  Not sure if this question belongs here or on SO, but posting here for now :) I'm trying to override a global function defined in "StaticLib" for my iOS application but the compiler keeps giving me the duplicate symbol error. Relevant code: #import "MyApplication.h" #import "StaticLib.h" NSData* getAllData() { NSLog(@"myGetAllData"); return nil; } @implementation MyApplication ... @end I've looked into Apple's runtime library but that all seems to be class-oriented. Any suggestions or is it just not possible to override global functions from static libraries?

• Canon Pixma MP150 printer stops before the job is done

  I have a Canon Pixma MP150. It's old but it still works well. The problem is that since I have been running Ubuntu 12.04 the printer exhibits odd behavior. Usually right at the end of a job, it will stop. The printing is done, but the printer is still "working" and it won't release the paper. If I pull it out and test the printer, it will start over and print the same job. Once I just let it be and about an hour or so later it finished with no problems. My question is, could the be an issue with the printer (it is old) or is it the drivers in Ubuntu? Any advice (or suggestions on debugging) would be greatly appreciated as I print a lot and don't really want to buy a new printer.

• Files don't sync with U1.

  I am running 10.1 (all current updates have been installed) and I'm unable to sync any files to U1. U1 shows my computer as being added to my account and I bought enough space to hold all the files I want backed up, but for some reason it still doesn't sync. I have marked the files to be synced and even checked the devices tab in the U1 preferences; it shows my computer as being part of my account but the connect button is inoperable and restart doesn't produce any effect when clicked. I have read all the FAQ I can find relating to my problem and have tried all the suggestions that seem to adress problems similar to mine, as well as adding and removing my computer from my account a bunch of times. None of these produced any effect one way or another. I'm not very techno savvy so step by step and/or lay mens terms are greatly appreciated, Thank you

• Trouble with Ubuntu 12.10 install/evaluation

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.10 onto my Compaq Presario SR1215CL. I downloaded ubuntu-12.10-desktop-i386.iso file using BitTorrent and burned it to a blank DVD-RW. When I boot the computer with the Live Disk in the disk tray I am able to get to the Welcome screen. If I click on "Try Ubuntu" I am left at a blank screen except for the desktop background. There are no menus, toolbars, icons, etc. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at this stage I am able to log out of the Live Session, but am unable to log back in. If I click on "Install Ubuntu" instead, I am able to proceed fairly far into the installation process, but eventually it quits and drops me to the same blank screen as above. I'm not sure at which stage the installer quits, but it does ask me to identify the issue and solve the problem myself from inside the Live Session, which doesn't work. Does anyone have some suggestions on how to get Ubuntu installed and working?

  I need your help. I'm trying to install php_apc.dll into my php directory. So far this is what i've done: I copied php_apc.dll to c:\wamp\bin\php\php5.3.0\ext. I've also restarted the server several times. But when i checked http://localhost/?phpinfo=1 There wasnt any evidence of APC Extension Installation. Please what i'm i doing wrong? • How do you handle domain logic that spans multiple model objects in an ORM?

  So I know that business logic should be placed in the model. But using an ORM it is not as clear where I should place code that handles multiple objects. E.g. let's say we have a Customer model which has a type of either sporty or posh and we wanted to customer.add_bonus() to every posh customer. Where would we do this? Do we create a new class to handle all this? If yes, where do we put it (alongside all the other model classes, but not subclass it from the ORM?)? I'm currently using django framework in python, so specific suggestions are even more wanted.

• Use ctrl+space to invoke clang_complete

  I've setup a simple vim environment for C++ development and I use clang_complete for code completion. I'm wondering if there is a way to invoke clang_complete with ctrl+space (as in Eclipse for example)? Currently it is invoked with C-X C-U, which is not very convenient. In the plugin code I saw this: inoremap <expr> <buffer> <C-X><C-U> <SID>LaunchCompletion() So I tried something like this in my vimrc: inoremap <expr> <buffer> <C-Space> <SID>LaunchCompletion() Of course it didn't work:) I read vim's doc about key mapping. but no good. Have you got any suggestions what I'm doing wrong?

  I recently bought an ssd drive 128 gb and i would like yo have your suggestions on partitiong and installing ubuntu 12.10 on it. First of all my drives are : HDD 640 Gb SSD Samsung 830 series 128 Gb Whats the best partitiong for theese drives ? 128 Gb is sure enormous amount of space only for / (root) . Is it a good choice if i make 2 partitions on ssd (20 Gb / and 100 /home) and leave hdd as backub drive for my data (files,movies,music etc) ? In this case what mount point must have hdd ? Can you suggest me the best partitiong for my drives ?

• Failed GRUB after 10.04 to 12.04 upgrade in system with LVM

  I am using Ubuntu Server as a SMB server at work and two days ago I have tried to upgrade it to 12.04. After reboot, I got this grub_xput missing grub rescue> and all attempts to start from this prompt failed (missing components, although grub directory is normally set as prefix). My system sits and boots on an LVM (soft raid-5). I have read almost all posts in many forums, tried grub rescue, boot-repair, ubuntu-secure-remix with boot-repair but without positive result. This is the log of my last (and best so far) attempt to fix this system. Any suggestions? Please help.

  I've been tasked with writing an essay extolling the virtues of object oriented programming and creating an accompanying game to demonstrate them. My initial idea is to find a tutorial for a simple game written in a programming language which does not follow the OOP paradigm (or written in an OOP language but not in an OOP way) and recreate it in an OOP way using either C# or Java (haven't yet decided). This would then allow me to make concrete comparisons between the two. The game doesn't have to be anything complex; Tetris, Pong, etc. that sort of thing. The problem I've had so far is finding a suitable tutorial, any suggestions?

• How can I support scrolling when using batched rendering for my tiles?

  I have tiled map 100*75 and tiles are 32*32 pixel.I want to use batching for performance .I don't figure it out , because of my game needs scrolling and every frame i draw 22*16 tiles (my screen is 20*16 tile) .I thought that batching tiles for every frame .Is it good or any suggestion? edit :to more clarify I want to use occlusion culling and batching at the same time.I thought that drawing only visible areas and batching them together .But there is a something i couldn't figure out .When scrolling screen with translate matrix , if one row become invisible , I bind new row and batch them again.Every batched objects needs to buffer again.So I batch tiles and buffer to VBO every time when one row become invisible .I don't know these way is efficient or not .This is my question .And i am open to any suggestions.

• I'm a beginner Java programmer but I want to be useful

  Programming has always interested me, but after learning some of the basics of Java(I'm talking high school level), I don't really know what to do from there. I want to be able to apply what I learned in some way, whether it be a volunteer project or something, but I probably don't know enough programming. Is it possible for a novice Java programmer to be useful in some way whatsoever. I want to do this because I feel like I could learn more about programming by helping people in theirs, but I'm not sure if I'm even able to this though. • How do I get the Java plugin in Firefox 3.6 working?

  I have Ubuntu 10.10. I needed the Sun Java so I added Sun Oracle as supplier of packages and installed java-6. However, I haven't been able to persuade Firefox to use this Java for the browser. In fact I managed to turn off the original Java plugin (I can't remember exactly how) and I can't see any way to re-enable it. Ie. it doesn't appear in the "plugins" page of the Add-ons option. (I'm in Firefox 3.6.13) Any suggestions for how to re-enable Java in FF 3.6, and make sure it's using the Sun version? thanks phil
