• No wireless on Ubunto 12.10

  Okay, so I'm pretty new to the whole Ubuntu thing. I installed it yesterday alongside Windows 8, and it installed fine. Then I started it up and tried to connect to my wireless router. It wouldn't give me the option and the only thing that I could find was Edit Connections thing along the top which I didn't understand at all and just ended up confusing me. Can someone give me a simple explanation as to what I have to do? My laptop is a Toshiba Satellite C855-18D. Thanks guys!

• What are the benefits of Android way of "saving memory" - explicitly passing Context objects everywhere?

  Turned out, this question is not easy to formulate for me, but let's try. In Android, pretty much any UI object depends on a Context, and has defined lifetime. It also can destroy and recreate UI objects and even whole application process at any time, and so on. This makes coding asynchronous operations correctly not straightforward. (and sometimes very cumbersome) But I never have seen a real explanation, why it's done that way? There are other OSes, including mobile OSes (iOS, for example), that don't do such things. So, what are the wins of Android way (Activities & Contexts)? Does that allow Android applications to use much less RAM, or maybe there are other benefits?

  This question already has an answer here: Implementing a camera / viewport to a 2D game 1 answer i'm making a video game, and i'm having, i think, a concept problem. The game will be a platformer which will use tile maps, so to start i will create a mask matrix indicating the tiles to be loaded, and etc..., so my problem is, how to handle the scrolling? should i create a giant mask matrix indicating in each position of the whole level what is supposed to be loaded, and according to the position of the player, change the section to be drawed?? Is this a correct approach to this situation??

• How to get numpad out of "mouse emulation" mode?

  My numeric keypad has somehow got into a "mouse emulation" mode where the number keys just move the mouse pointer around (2 = down; 8 = up, 6 = right, etc). Anyone know how to make it work normally again? None of the other numpad keys work either (I first noticed the whole thing when Ctrl + ÷ (numpad division sign) no longer produced "line comment" in IntelliJ IDEA). Toggling num lock doesn't affect this (though the indicator LED works as usual). I'm using GNOME on Lucid Lynx (10.4).

• Print Problem: Page Squeezed in Half

  I've just managed to successfully set up my printer (Canon MX320) using the Printing app on Ubuntu 12.04. However the only 1 remaining problem is that each time I tried to print it will only print the file on the top half of the page only: meaning that for some reason, the printer "squeezes" the whole content of each page in the file to fit into the top half of the page only (so the proportion in the print-out is not correct vertically). This happens with every type of file I tried to print (Documents, Images, Web pages). I checked the Printing's setting & properties and couldn't find anything related to this issue yet and I've already made sure to set all the information correct (paper size, source etc.). The Print Preview always display correctly on the screen, but it's only the actual print-out that shows this problem. I also tried with several different types of papers (A4, photos etc.) but the result is always the same: the printer keeps putting the content in the top half of the paper only.

• How often should saving to disk occur in an automatically saving text editor?

  I am developing a simple text editor and would like the application to save the text automatically. In other words, the user would never have to press a save button. I have seen other applications that do this, and was wondering how often is it safe to write files to disk? From a user experience standpoint, it seems that the more frequently this happens the better, but I am worried about performance and possible disk wear (especially on writes to SSDs). It seems like the operating system disk caching might help avoid these problems, but I also don't know if its safe to rely on that for an application like this. I was planning on writing the whole document to disk at each save, but this just seems terribly inefficient if the OS ends up writing it to disk to frequently, but relying on program unload may lose data in the case of a crash. Does anyone have any experience dealing with this that might be able to help?

  I developed a Flash website for a client and added the following .htaccess file in the root directory and the non-www to www redirect works perfectly. RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^website.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.website.com/$1 [L,R=301] I was also asked to add a Wordpress blog so I put it in a new directory folder (as opposed to a sub domain) with so the URL is www.website.com/blog Does Google now see the main site and blog as two different websites? Do I need to link them together using another .htaccess file in the Wordpress Root so Google automatically crawls the whole domain? Any help appreciated....

  Hey all, Recently, I uploaded a new site to an existing domain and I'd like to figure out how I can forward all links to said domain to a new domain. I'm looking for a wordpress solution if possible, but in the end I I seem myself writing a small header script that I will paste into ever directory's index file saying header('Location:http://xxx.yyy.zzz') Is there a cleaner way to do this without having to resort to managing the whole file structure?   The Google web crawler has indexed a whole set of URLs with encoded slashes (%2F) for our site. I assume it has picked up the pages from our XML sitemap file. The problem is that the live pages will actually result in a failure because of the Url Encoded Slashes Problem in Apache. Some solutions are mentioned here We are implementing a 301 redirect scheme for all the error pages. This should make the Google bot delete the pages from the crawling errors (no more crashing pages). Does implementing the 301s require the pages to be "live"? In that case we may be forced to implement solution 1 in the article. The problem is that solution 1 will pose a security vulnerability..

  I have simple problem that I have to long directories which I want to cd into, but I would like to know easy way. mosquito@mosquito-K56CB:~/Downloads$ ls | grep Guns Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (Japanese Edition) 1987 Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion I 1991 Of course I can just copy the name and put it like this: cd "Guns n' Roses - Appetite for Destruction (Japanese Edition) 1987" But why when I write cd Guns then tab, it finishes line into: cd Guns\ n\'\ Roses\ -\ then by my understanding I should just start writing App.. with tab and it should finish whole name, but it does not. And hitting tab twice does not show me anything either. What I am missing here?

• Subscribe/Publish Model in Web-based Application (c#) - Best Practices for Event Handlers

  I was recently exposed to a desktop application that uses an publish/subscribe model to handle commands, events, etc. I can't seem to find any good examples of using this in a web application, so I wonder if I am off base in trying to use this for web based development (on the server side)? I'm using asp.net c#. My main question in regards to the design is: When using a publish/subscribe model, is it better to have generic commands/events that pass no parameters and then have the subscribers look at static context objects that contain the data relevant to the event? Or is it better to create custom arguments for every event that contain data related to the event? The whole concept of a global container seems so convenient but at the same time seems to break encapsulation. Any thoughts or best practices from anyone who has implemented this type of model in a web based application? Even suggestions on this model out of the scope of my question are appreciated.

  Google has led many useful Java features (guava, gson); now that Oracle has purchased Sun will it effect its future enhancements and utilization as a development language. What exactly, or even approximately, are the legal ramifications? I thought Java was open source and would therefore remain unaffected ... ? Should Google just buy Oracle to get rid of the whole mess, that would be cool wouldn't it ? Do you think this is the beginning of the end for Java as a widely used language ? (I use Photorec, but if you know better one..). I tried to get back my pics and what has returned wasn't from folder. ?   Is it possible to customise the appearance of the Ambiance theme just for one user? I have read about the possibility of doing this: sudo vim /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/gtk-2.0/gtkrc but could something be done to change: just one setting for just one user? Perhaps changing something in the user's .themes directory? Notice: I would prefer not to copy the full theme to the user directory, just to provide an override mechanism after the "global" theme is applied, independently from the theme if possible, but anyway just specifying what needs to be different, not duplicating the whole theme definition.

• Will my traffic come back after my site redesign?

  I screwed up. I launched my site after rebuilding it without setting up the proper 301's and traffic immediately dropped about 60%(it's not really something I thought about). After about a week and a half, I set the 301's back up yesterday and resubmitted my sitemap to google. Google has yet to index the whole thing, but traffic isn't getting any better. Is it likely to come back? If so, I. How long? Has this happened to you? Any info is appreciated. I am really anxious!

• Have search engines recognise multi-lingual sites

  Hello. I have organised my site by language using the following structure: www.domain.com #spanish language version www.domain.com/en #english language version The site is of Spanish subject matter hence Spanish language takes priority at root of domain. Although the site is new at this stage I would hope visiting from google.com and google.es would return English and Spanish versions respectively. Are there any particular steps I need take to separate the two. Should I add them both as individual sites in Google's webmaster tools and also should I submit individual site maps for each 'site' or as a whole? Thanks in advance.

• Can decoupling hurt maintainability in certain situations?

  Can the fact that the business logic is mapped to interfaces instead of implementations actually hinder the maintenance of the application in certain situations? A naive example with the Java's Hibernate framework would be, that for example (provided I don't have the whole code-base in my head, the project structure is a mess and classes are named with arbitrary names) if I wish to see what's going on in a certain DAO, to see if it actually is doing what it's supposed to do, then instead of traversing backwards up the tree from the point where the data service is invoked (where the tree will end in an interface with no implementation details whatsoever apart from the signature) I have to for example go and look for a configuration XML file to see which class is mapped to said interface as the implementation before being able to access the actual implementation details. Are there any situations where having loose coupling can actually hurt maintainability?

• ec2 instance won't boot!

  So I had a server lose connection while updating to 14.04LTS. Foolishly, it ended up getting rebooted, and now I'm here. I disconnected the volume and mounted it on another system, chrooted it, and updated the kernel. Still no dice. Any idea what the problem could be? Thanks in advance! • Gnome 3 freezes when switching workspaces

  I have found an odd problem with Gnome 3 on Ubuntu recently. Under certain circumstances, when switching between two workspaces the whole desktop and user interface will 'freeze' for anything up to 2 minutes; during this time I cannot click anything or interact using the keyboard. Often, the screen will show a 'half-completed' animation of the workspace swapper. This is on Ubuntu 12.04.1 running on a 2-year old Macbook Pro, and it only seems to occur when using an external monitor. This does not seem to be a processor or memory issue, and does not occur every time I switch workspaces. Is this a known problem? What can I do in the short or long term to fix it?

  Yesterday I installed Ubuntu 12.04 because of some previous problems. I had to recover files through Photorec. But it filled my whole disk overnight and didn't even finish. When I turn on my notebook, there's an error The system is runnning in low-graphics mode (don't know if it's somehow connected with it). I need to delete those recup_dir folders, but also I need to finish recovering and get through the error. So I'm absolutely desperate. I hope that I writed it ok. Thanks in advance.

  I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles. • Using an external hard drive as a server and be able to connect via wifi [on hold]

  OK, so i have an old external HDD(seagate 1tb) and a windows computer just in case but im trying to set it up as a server for my home at the moment but if everything goes right i want to transfer it to being a database hub for the business i work for that way i can have more then one register at a time on the same basic database. The thing is im new to the whole server part along with im not well versed with ubuntu either so what im getting at is if i can get it setup, can i connect it on ubuntu and run a linux based Point of sales program but have multiple linked to the single server? i may be able to do it via the router, i think its a belkin n600 with usb port but at this moment i dont know what it is since im not home. i just need information if this is possible and if so, a guide would be appreciated.
