• Software for handling camera RAW-files

  I use a digital SLR as most other photographers do today and have quickly realised that capturing images using camera-RAW files is the way to go. Personally I use Adobe Lightroom to handle my photo library, but I know there are other software available like Apple Aperture. These applications are quite hard to use for a novice, and are quite expensive too. I've often recommended other photographers to switch to camera-raw, but they won't do it because Windows can't handle it natively. Are there any free or cheaper applications out there that can do simple file handling and adjustments? Preferably so simple that my mom can do it. I know Nikon offers a codec that allows you to view NEF-files natively inside Windows, but still limits the uses of the file and slows the system down if the file is big. Does anybody know of a drag-and-drop application that converts camera-raw to JPG on-the-fly? In case I or someone would need to upload an image to the web or use it inside a word-document. Thanks.

• PNP4Nagios, nagiosgraph, separate Cacti, or something else for Nagios trending.

  I've been using Nagios for a while now and recently started using Cacti after being dissatisfied with the lack of scaling and lack of any GUI in MRTG. I'm interested in adding trending to my Nagios installation and wondered what was the best route to go. I've looked around a bit and have seen what's available, but there's not a lot of information around to differentiate them from each other. My Nagios install has about 250 hosts and 1100 service checks, but many of them are just simple network devices and there's only about 20 servers and 300 services associated with them. All servers but 2 are running Windows Server 2003. What are the main highlights of PNP4Nagios vs. nagiosgraph, or would I be better off using some sort of tool to convert the data to RRD form and just view it directly in Cacti? Is there a completely different direction I could go that would be even better? Please comment if you need any more information, I tend to be too wordy and tried to keep this question brief. Thanks!

• I Can Edit SD Card on Windows XP but Not on Windows 7

  I have an 8GB SDHC card which I have used to upload pictures onto my Windows XP machine using an SD card reader ("SanDisk Ultra II"). I could also delete pictures and create folders on the card. I recently obtained a new computer that runs Windows 7 and, while I can view and upload the photos, I am unable to delete photos or create folders. When I attempt to do either of these two operations, the desired option does not appear in the menu ("Delete"/"New Folder"). Also, the shortcut keys do not work (e.g. the Delete key and Alt+F+W+F). I have attempted to change the Properties from Read-only, but am greeted with a "media is write protected". I should add that when I insert the Card Reader back into my Windows XP computer, I am granted full write permissions. Why can't I modify the SD Card from Windows 7? And, related, how can I fix this issue? Let me know if you have any additional questions. Thanks!

• How do I create and conveniently search through Libraries in Windows 8?

  In Windows 7, I took the habit of putting most of my frequently accessed disk areas as Libraries - there were about a dozen. Typing a word in the Start menu would then give me a summary of matches by Library. For example, searching for "WPF" would tell me that I've got some results in the Books library, in the Coding library and a few other PDFs in the Downloads library, one of which I could then expand to see all results within. In Windows 8, that functionality appears to be gone. The Search function in the Charms Bar lists tons of results by type (Documents, Pictures, et cetera) but not by Library. This is practically useless since Documents contains hundreds of .txt and .cs files, a few of which might be Books or Downloads. The only option I found is to go into Explorer and use the search bar in the Library section. However, there again, all search results are mixed together, and I can't seem to find a way to know which Library each result came from (in the Details view, I didn't find a Library column I could add). So, if I want to know which Library contains stuff about a given topic, I have to search the Libraries one by one. Very inconvenient. Is Microsoft slowly deprecating libraries? Any tips? How else can I search through libraries?

• Tooltips shadow stuck on desktop

  I tends to get this problem from time to time. The tooltips with a shadow appearing on top of everything. It's the shadow of the tooltips not disappearing after the tooltips disappear. The last one I had the tooltips was from the wifi connection list at the systray. This problem also happen to me on another computer. Both running Win7 with ATI gpu. I found this similar post Menu command stuck on screen but none of the solution helped. In fact the "Fade or slide tooltips into view" has been unchecked from the beginning. Ending task of "dwm.exe" also doesn't help. So far the only way to resolve this by restarting window. I can't post picture yet, so can't show any screenshot. Edit: Just tested a few more trick which doesn't work. 1. Turn of aero 2. Hibernate 3. Switch main display to external display and switch back. 4. Change resolution

• Ubuntu rm not deleting files

  My colleague and I have been struggling with deleting a directory and its contents. We are working on a new version of our websites source code on Ubuntu 8.04 (dir: /var/www/websites), what we want to do is delete the websites directory and recreate it from a .tar backup we created a couple weeks ago. The purpose of this is so we can run our deployment procedure in a local environment before we do so on our live / public environment. We use this command: rm -r websites This deletes the directory and the files within it. The problem occurs when we un-tar our backup file and view the website we are getting files that don't exist in the .tar backup, in fact these files were only created a few days ago and should have been deleted. We delete the directory once more in the manner stated above, we then create a new websites directory using the mkdir command. Strangely at this stage the 'deleted files' do not come back, but if we unpack our .tar file the 'deleted files' appear again. Is there a way to ensure these files are deleted, or at least the pointers that associate them with said directory. Our .tar backup does not include these files We do not want to use the shred command We do not want to use 3rd party applications Solution should be functional via terminal (SSH) Many thanks! EDIT Er... we fixed it. Turns out the files that are reappearing are because of a link we have to another directory (outside the /var/www/websites), we were restoring the link but not deleting the files on the other end.   I have a Hyper-V physical machine along with two standard laptops running within my LAN (connected by an ASUS-RT56U router). The physical server runs Windows Hyper-V Server 2008 R2, with two Windows Server 2008 R2 (full) guest VMs installed and running within. Both laptops run Windows 7. All OSs are 64-bit. Opening up Network in Windows Explorer on either of the two laptops displays both of the laptops in the LAN fine. However, neither of the guest VMs on the server (nor the host itself) are displayed. Indeed, the guest VMs can not see each other in Network view either. I can ping all computers (laptops and servers) without problems from within the LAN, but all of the servers are simply not visible from anywhere. In addition, the Network Map screen (accessible via Network and Sharing centre) gives me an error message: "An error happened during the mapping process." And I'm suspecting this might have something to do with how LLTP (Link Layer Topology Protocol) is working on the network. Worth noting though is that before my server was on the network, the Network Map screen displayed fine (as far as I can remember).

• EC2 Configuration

  I am trying to create a server structure for my EC2 account. The design I have chosen consists of 2 instances running in different availability zones, elastic load balancer, an auto-scaling group with cloudwatch monitoring configured and a security group defining rules for access to the instances. This setup is to support an online web application written in PHP. I am trying to decide what is a better policy: Store MySQL DB on a separate Instance Store MySQL DB on an attached EBS volume (from what i know auto-scaling will not replicate the attached EBS volume but will generate new instances from a chosen AMI - is this view correct?) Regards the AMI I plan to use a basic Amazon linux 64 bit AMI, and install bastille (maybe OSSEC) but I am looking to also use an encrypted file system. Are there any issues using an encrypted file system and communication between the DB and webapp i neeed to be aware of? Are there any comms issues using the encrypted filesystem on the instance housing the webapp I was going to launch a second instance or attach a second volume in the second availability zone to act as a standby for the database - I'm just looking for some suggestions about how to get the two DB's to talk - will this be a big task Regards updates for security is it best to create a recent snapshot and just relaunch and allow Amazon to install updates on launch or is the yum update mechanism a suitable alternative - is it better practice to relaunch instead of updates being installed which force a restart. I plan to create two AMI snapshots one for the app server and one for the DB each with the same security measures in place - is this a reasonable - I just figure it is a better policy than having additional applications that are unnecessary included in a AMI that I intend on using. My plan for backup is to create periodic snapshots of the webapp and DB instances (if I use an additional EBS volume instead of separate instances my understanding is that the EBS volume will persist in S3 storage in the event of an unexpected termination and I can create snapshots of the volume backup purposes). Thanks in advance for suggestions and advice. I am new to EC2 and I may have described unnecessary overkill but I want to try implement what can be considered a best practice solution so all advice is appreciated.

• No external src ip in log files (my router ip appears instead)

  I recently retired my workhorse WRT54G router/AP in favor of a Linksys EA2700. Since then, all inbound traffic (bound to an Ubuntu 10.02 box running LAMP)logged to Syslog, Apache's error and access logs, etc. (all behind said router) is getting logged with a src ip of 192.168.1.1, that of the router's internal ip. For example, here is an old entry from apache's access.log: 74.82.68.20 - - [22/Feb/2011:10:14:34 -0600] "GET /assets/css/style.css HTTP/1.1" 304 154 "http://example.com/view.php?event_id=1" "BlackBerry8520/5.0.0.822 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100" And here is one since switching the router: 192.168.1.1 - - [05/Oct/2012:21:29:25 -0500] "GET /somedir/print.css HTTP/1.1" 200 650 "http://example.com/somedir/" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:15.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/15.0.1"** That first field is the problem. Each and every entry in every log shows an "external" IP of 192.168.1.1, which isn't very helpful. Any ideas? Much thanks from a n00b!

• How can I fix Office Sharepoint Search service?

  For some reason, in operations server services, Office Sharepoint Search Service is MISSING! Which means I cant get Shared services working, which in turn I cannot get, and I do not think I have ever got Usage and reporting to see who is visiting my website, counter and with what OS/ browser ETC. I dont think I have ever seen this work in the 2 years trying with sharepoint. So in essense I have two problems, most important SEARCH, second usage reports. When trying to search, all i get is unknown error. Nothing is in my event viewer at all. I have tried http://www.cjvandyk.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=96 , in the comments on that site, on other person reports search is missing entirely and is going to uninstall. Im tired of uninstall sharepoint and resinstalling to fix an odd off issue. I have things setup with Team foundation server that took forever to get work and reinstallation is not my solution. As for usage reporting, this is what microsoft responds to the " Both Windows SharePoint Services Usage logging and Office SharePoint Usage Processing must be enabled to view usage reports. Please contact your administrator to ensure that these services are enabled. " error I cannot do all the steps since SSP needs to be setup which i cant above.

• Debugging Samba/CUPS printer sharing with Windows

  I've got a HP Deskjet hooked up to a Slackware 12.2 box. I've got CUPS set up and can print a test page from the box just fine. I've also got Samba set up and have a couple file shares that work fine. I'm trying to share that HP Deskjet out via Samba, but I can't get it to show up in any Windows system. I see the server and its file shares in Windows networking, but when I open the Printers, no printer shows up. Running net view \\servername from the command line lists the file shares, but no printers. Here's the pertinent part of my smb.conf, if that helps: [global] workgroup = HOMENET security = share hosts allow = 192.168.1. 192.168.2. 127. load printers = yes printcap name = cups printing = cups log file = /var/log/samba.%m max log size = 50 [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/samba browseable = no public = yes writable = no printable = yes guest only = yes Can anyone give me some pointers as to where to start looking for potential causes? Update: Running testparm shows no errors. • Windows Media Sharing not 'always' being detected by PS3

  I'm having a weird problem with Windows Media Sharing on Windows 7 .. I have the following hardware in my network: PC 1 --- My main PC --- runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64 PC 2 --- My backup PC --- runs Windows 7 Ultimate x32 PS3 PC 1 is my main PC which has all my data/media on it .. PC 2 is a backup PC I have, but I use it like once in 2 months .. It has nothing installed on it apart from some very very basic software ... Problem is, my PS3 always sees the media sharing service coming from PC 2, but it never sees the media sharing service coming from PC 1 initially .. Both PC 1 and PC 2 have the same media sharing configuration (All everything on all devices on all networks) ... But when I restart both PCs, the PS3 will only detect PC 2's media sharing service, not PC1 .... However here's the twist .. When PC 1 is restarted, and if I view my 'Network' on PC 2, I do see PC 1's Media Sharing Service, and I'm able to play from it too on PC 2 .. To get my PS3 to also see PC 1's media sharing service, I have to do either of the following 2 things: 1) Play something from PC 1's media sharing service on PC 2 ... The PS3 will then magically also detect PC 1's media sharing service .. 2) Go into the Services area on PC 1 and restart the 'Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service' ... After this, the PS3 also instantly starts to see PC 1's media sharing service .. Since my PS3 is like a month old and is properly detecting PC 1's media sharing service, I think the problem is somewhere in the configuration of PC 1's media sharing service ... Also, on PC 1 I have Norton Internet Security 2012 installed, but I've disabled it completely, and have also disabled Windows Firewall (from PC 1 only) .. Can someone shed some light onto this ?

  I'm subscribed to some mailing lists and every day people reply to a wrong mail (or they don't reply at all), so that their mail lands in the wrong (or a new) thread. I set the mail display in "View ? Sort by" to "Threaded". Example: mailing list "Foobar": [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic Re: [Foobar] random topic [Foobar] I'm John Doe Re: [Foobar] I'm John Doe Re: [Foobar] Welcome, John Re: [Foobar] random topic There are two discussions, one about "random topic", one about "John Doe". The subject line changes in the discussion about John Doe, which is fine (no problem here). But the last mail should be pigeonholed in the first thread. Instead it is at the top-level. Now, how can I move that last mail into the correct thread? I tried to drag&drop it at the mail I think it should be a reply to, but this doesn't work. I think theoretically it should be possible by fiddling with the mail headers after receiving the mail, but this doesn't seem to be a comfortable way.

  After configuring a single, unified Inbox within Outlook 2007 to unify multiple email accounts, I found Thunderbird 3's Smart Folder feature. It works great, providing individual inboxes for each of your email accounts and a unified inbox which provides a unified, virtual view of those other inboxes. Thunderbird is smart enough so what when I reply to an email addressed to a specific email account, the reply is "From" that email address. In order to know which inbound email was to which of my accounts, I added the "Recipient" column to the inbox Smart Folder: What's displayed in the Recipient column depends on how the sender/sender's email client addresses the email. If they send it to just "[email protected]" without specifying a friendly name, the Recipient column displays "[email protected]" and there's no ambiguity about which account the email was sent to. However, if the sender has me in their address book (likely stored with a friendly name), it will be addressed as "Howard Camp [[email protected]]" and then show in the Recipient column as "Howard Camp". The problem is that if someone emails me with a friendly name at another of my email accounts (e.g. "Howard Camp [[email protected]]", the Recipient column will also display "Howard Camp" and I can't tell which account it's to until I open the message and/or look at the details. How can I configure Thunderbird to always display my email address rather than the sender-specified friendly name in the Recipient column?

• Google Maps mashup for notes/househunting

  I'm house-hunting at the moment and I'm trying to geek it out er I mean streamline the decision-making process. I'm currently using google maps's "my maps" feature to store pins to properties. I create one map per estate agent, then put relevant into into the individual pins. The idea being, I can look at the map and quickly choose which property to view next. However the pins don't currently link back to the map they're owned by, so you have to hunt a bit to get the estate agent info, it's a hassle to get all maps displayed in a new session if you have lots of agents, and each pin doesn't automatically show its bubble so you have to do lots of clicking to see all the info you want. I've tried Evernote, but despite its tag system initially showing some promise, I can't find a way to seemlessly integrate maps. A few google searches don't turn anything up either. Even the big sites, like http://www.rightmove.co.uk, don't seem to provide any maps integration by default. You can see an individual house's location, but not all results of a search. So is there a web site or windows program I could use to do something like this? Viewing all properties on a map is a must, as is quick access to contact details.

• can not connect to SQL running on amazon ec2 machine

  I am using SQL managment studio 2008 running on an Amazon EC2 machine. I am unable to connect to the database in my asp.net application. The EC2 instance has been set to accept connections over the SQL port. I am also able to remote the machine as well as view websites hosted on the server. Listed below is part of the connection string relating to this instance. When the program is ran and this connection string is called, it returns tcp error 0 - no return response. it just times out. <add name="ProjectServer" connectionString="Data Source=*IP ADDRESS HERE*,1433;Initial Catalog=*Catalog Name*;User ID=IP-0A6ED514\Administrator;"/> I removed the ip and the catalog name for the example, but I am sure they are correct. The only thing that I could think may cause an error, is the differences in names between the user id and the server name - the server name is ip-0A6ED514\sharepoint but the user name is ip-0A6ED514\administrator when I log into the sql server manager on the EC2 instance. A password is not used. Not sure if I would need to leave in a blank string for password - also not sure if the difference between server name and user id to log in makes a difference. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. update - when this connection string is used with out the port, i get tcp provider error 40 - when the port is in there, i get error 0 edit- the sql server is using windows authentication - does this make a difference? • Will having 2 MX records pointing to different mail server types cause delivery issues?

  I've inherited a setup where the mail server is exchange 2010. For some reason, I'm not sure why there is 2 MX records setup. One being the exchange server which is the higher priority while the external (non-exchange) server is the secondary mx record. I don't believe this was done for redundancy reasons as the other mail server is not set to route mail back to the exchange server (it's just the webhosts email for their hosting) The client has been experiencing disappearing email, however after my investigations its not actually disappearing, but exchange is successfully receiving the mail and then passing it on to the external server. It isn't happening all the time, just with some email messages from some domains. My question: Is exchange passing the mail on because it can see the secondary MX record and is configured (somewhere) to send mail out? If so, how do I stop it? Is it as easy as just removing the second MX record pointing to the external mail server and exchange will stop passing mail on? I'm not exchange expert so I'm kinda stumped. Exchange MX tools are saying everything is setup and configured correctly from an external point of view.

• IIS 7 - 403 Access Denied error on wwwroot trying to redirect to /owa

  I'm trying to setup a redirect from http://mail.mydomain.com to https://mail.mydomain.com/owa. I've been unsuccessful in doing this by using IIS's HTTP Redirect so I looked to other options. The one I settled on is to create a default document in the wwwroot folder to handle the redirect. I created a file called index.aspx (and added index.aspx to the list of default documents) and put the following code in it: <script runat="server"> private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e) { Response.Status = "301 Moved Permanently"; Response.AddHeader("Location","https://mail.mydomain.com/owa"); } </script> Instead of getting a redirect I get: 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied. You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials that you supplied. I've been trying to find an answer to this but have been unsuccessful so far. One thing I did try was to add the Everyone group to wwwroot with read access. No change. The AppPool for Default Web Site is DefaultAppPool and the Identity is ApplicationPoolIdentity. (I don't know what these things are but maybe knowing this will help you.) Thanks!

• How to compress .pdfs in word 2007?

  Hi I am trying to send my cover letter and resume away but apparently it is too big to send through craigs list(my computer says the total size is 500kb) as it has a 600kb limit(so small should be at least a meg). Hi there. You recently tried to email Some job Email, an anonymous craigslist address. However, your message was too big to be sent through our system. Craigslist has a 600KB limit on the messages we'll send. Please reduce the size of your mail and try again. Thanks for using craigslist. So when I convert my word 2007(.docx) files to pdf they become huge. Like they got from 32kb to 320kb. So is there a way I can either get around craigslist limits or compress my pdfs a bit to make it happy. I don't want to send zips and stuff since the person who gets it might not even know what to do. I rather not send .docx since not sure if will have office 2007 or the compatibility view installed and I rather just send it as pdf(as some place require it anyways to be in pdfs). Thanks

  I've managed to install Zabbix22-server on CentOS 6.x along with php-fpm and nginx. I can view the page of 127.0.0.1 but I can only see this: After clicking the "Login" button, the page is the same: What can I do to make it work as expected, so that I can login as admin? • Why can`t we treat SSL Certs like Pgp keys instead of trusting CAs?

  I am dumb and stupid and I do not know all the technical aspects of SSL and server/client side implications and implementations. However I understand them good enough from user point of view to use SSL and encyrption daily. I was thinking that how silly it is to trust some unknown/known CAs when it comes to our our certificates for our servers. There had been many cases of misconduct, misuse, compromises and theft of certificates/ca keys from those places. On top of those known issues we also have to pay these guys regularly. I am wondering why can not we use/treat web server certificates like we use our pgp keys? So I sign a SSL certificate and send to a central server. And then each user accessing my site checks the validity and the keys from some central server (like pgp key servers). Is this a stupid idea? If so what could be a better idea than current system of issuing valid certificates. I am looking for a better than more secure idea. Naturally this is not a solution to an existing problem, rather it will be a hypothetical solution for some future implementation of a currently messed up web of trust on the internet due to recent news about NSA and their criminal buddies around the world. thanks

• How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? That gave me this information: which is not especially helpful. Then I tried connecting WinDbg to WUDFHost.exe (the process that seems to host user mode drivers) to see if it could catch the error. • Ubuntu 10.04 server delay responding to AJAX requests

  I manage a Ubuntu 10.04 server with a couple of domains hosted on it. As I continue to learn more about all these wonderful new (for me), one issue that I have begun to notice is the delay it sometimes takes for the server to respond to certain requests. As an example, when I view the timeline of events using firebug I can see that most of the time when I make a POST, the server responds in under 100ms. Sometimes, however, there is a substantial delay before the RESPONSE from the server. I can't seem to tell when the delay will happen and when it won't, however, when it happens the delay is always for about 4.5 seconds. The delay seems to happen about 30-40% of the time.
