• How JQuery data validation plugin works on the submit action

  Hi all, I am learning how to use JQuery validation plugin, and came across some questions about the JQuery magic that works on the sumbit action. I got a simple HTML form which has got an input text field like this: <form class="cmxform" id="commentForm" method="get" action=""> <input id="cname" name="name" size="25" class="required" minlength="2" /> <input class="submit" type="submit" value="Submit"/> </form> The magic happened when I tried not to input any data into the field and pressed the submit button. I saw an error message in red pop up, and no matter how hard and how many times I pressed the submit button, nothing was submitted. It seemed that there was some scripts that disabled the submit action, but I just couldn't find which lines of codes in the JQuery Validatyion Plugin that did it.

  Can you cast an object to one that implements an interface? Right now, I'm building a GUI, and I don't want to rewrite the Confirm/Cancel code (A confirmation pop-up) over and over again. So, what I'm trying to do is write a class that gets passed the class it's used in and tells the class whether or not the user pressed Confirm or Cancel. The class always implements a certain interface. • UIWebView in multithread ViewController

  I have a UIWebView in a viewcontroller, which has two methods as below. The question is if I pop out(tap back on navigation bar) this controller before the second thread is done, the app will crash after [super dealloc], because "Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread.". • How would you implement database updates via email?

  I'm building a public website which has its own domain name with pop/smtp mail services. I'm considering giving users the option to update their data via email - something similar to the functionality found in Flickr or Blogger where you email posts to a special email address. The email data is then processed and stored in the underlying database for the website. I'm using ASP.NET and SQL Server and using a shared hosting service. Any ideas how one would implement this, or if it's even possible using shared hosting? Thanks

  Hi there, I am working with Google Analytics - Goals and Funnels for quite sometime, but one thing is is not clear for me. I would very much appreciate if you could help me. We are advertising on several sites rotating several different ads. Our main goal is to collect as many sign-ups (new users) as possible for as low price as possible. We use to advertise the way, that each ad has the same URL where to land, but contains different parameter (e.g. http://www.brautpunkt.de/?ref=fb01 or ..... .de/?ref=adw03). My question is: If I am looking at the goals (Goals Overview), filtering it through Advanced Segments (Landing Page contains /?ref=fb01) is this subset of goals done only by the users who registered in the same session after they came on our site directly from the ad? or also by those users who came first time through this ad (/?ref=fb01), didn't register in the same session but came directly for example on the other day and register than? • Program ends abruptly even in debugger - how did that happen?

  I am trying to debug a program that unexpectedly shuts down. When I say "shuts down, I mean one moment I am seeing all the windows being displayed, each of which is showing all the right data,then suddenly all the windows disappear. The is no messagebox reporting anything wrong. So I tried running the program in the debugger hoping that it would somehow trap whatever was causing the program to abort, but even within the debugger the program simply ends abruptly. The last line in the debugger is: The program '[5500] test.exe: Native' has exited with code 0 (0x0). My program which is extremely large and extremely old has a lot of self diagnostics. My suspicion is that perhaps a self test has failed and maybe I just called "exit()", forgetting to pop up a dialog explaining why. My question now is, how can I find out from which point in the code, my program quit?

Could somebody give me an example when clicking on 'bold' button would also pop up an alert box? How can I trap 'paste' event? • How to get mouseposition when context menu appears?

  Hi. I have a panel which holds many pictureboxes. Each picturebox has registered "contextRightMenu" as their context menu. What i want when the context menu pops up is to get the current mouseposition. I have tried getting the mouseposition by using mouseDown and click, but these events happens after one of the items of the context menu is clicked, and that is too late. the popup event of the context menu does not deliver mouse event args, so i don't know how to get the mouseposition. If i can get mouse event args it is easy.   Hello, I have a canvas (Panel Control) in my WinForms app where users can drag things like textbox's, labels etc around. But I want to make it easier for them to more precisely align the objects. I've read into it and Adorners seem to be the way to go? But, apparently it's only for WPF. WPF is not an option for me, unfortunately. What I'm trying to accomplish is to have lines pop up every time the user drags an object around in the canvas... Just how they work in the Windows Forms Designer View. • What arguments to use to explain why a SQL DB is far better then a flat file

  The higher ups in my company were told by good friends that flat files are the way to go, and we should switch from MS SQL server to them for everything we do. We have over 300 servers and hundreds of different databases. From just the few I'm involved with we have 10 billion records in quite a few of them with upwards of 100k new records a day and who knows how many updates... Me and a couple others need to come up with a response saying why we shouldn't do this. Most of our stuff is ASP.NET with some legacy ASP. We thought that making a simple console app that tests/times the same interactions between a flat file (stored on the network) and SQL over the network doing large inserts, searches, updates etc along with things like network disconnects randomly. This would show them how bad flat files can be espically when you are dealing with millions of records. What things should I use in my response? What should I do with my demo code to illustrate this? My sort list so far: Security Concurent access Performance with large ammounts of data Ammount of time to do such a massive rewrite/switch Lack of transactions PITA to map relational data to flat files I fear that this will be a great post on the Daily WTF someday if I can't stop it now.

  I have created a test app that has in app purchasing. I am able to connect to the store and verify my product ID's. I then use my test user account to purchase a product. And guess what... it works... the first time. If I try to use the test user account to buy another product (the same product or a different one) then I get a pop up that says "An unknown error has occurred" with a "Cancel" and "Retry" option. If I retry then I get the same error. After hitting cancel I get the error: Error Domain=SKErrorDomain Code=0 UserInfo=0x161180 "Cannot connect to iTunes Store" Any ideas?

  on larger projects i use a simple bug tracking system thats designed to be used by clients i have a lot of trouble convincing clients to use it (they send bug reports via email) does anyone have any strategies they can suggested? also, i have been playing around with a theory as to why this is the case; it goes like this: asking a client to log a bug is like taking your car to a mechanic for a service, and the mechanic hands you the engine oil and says "here, pop that in". basically, the client has paid you to do the work, logging a bug sounds too much like work, so they want you to do it thoughts? -- LM

• some OVERLAPS using WSASend not returning in a timely manner using GetQueuedCompletionStatus?

  Background: I'm using CreateIoCompletionPort, WSASend/Recv, and GetQueuedCompletionStatus to do overlapped socket io on my server. For flow control, when sending to the client, I only allow several WSASend() to be called when all pending OVERLAPs have popped off the IOCP. Problem: Recently, there are occassions when the OVERLAPs do not get returned to the IOCP. The thread calling GetQueuedCompletionStatus does not get them and they remain in my local pending queue. I've verified that the client DOES receive the data off the socket and the socket is connected. No errors were returned when the WSASend() calls were made. The OVERLAPs simply "never" come back without an external stimulus like the following: Disconnecting the socket from the client or server, immediately allows the GetQueuedCompletionStatus thread to retrieve the OVERLAPs Making additional calls to WSASend(), sometimes several are needed, before all the OVERLAPs suddenly pop off the queue. Question: Has anyone seen this type of behavior? Any ideas on what is causing this? Thanks, Geoffrey

• Preferred Method Of Application Purchase

  This is more of a "programmers" question, but felt that it was technical enough to belong on Stack Overflow instead. I'm launching an application soon that will follow the shareware model of purchase. I've thought about implementing this in a few ways: Limited access to the application until they purchase Full access to the application but expires after 30 day, requiring them to purchase to retain utility. Full access to the application indefinitely, but with a 10-15 second pop-up box on start-up asking them to register -- like mIRC does (or used to do). The method of authentication will be web-based. I'll provide them with an authentication key and they'll put it in the application. Whenever the application boots up, it'll check my web service and determine whether the application is genuine or not. This isn't my question. My question is: Is there a preferred method of implementation? I'd like to piss off the users as little as possible, but I'd also like to get paid for my work.

• Implementing a 'Send Feedback' feature in a Java desktop application

  I would like to implement a 'Send Feedback' option in a Java desktop application. One which will pop up a box for the user to enter a comment, then send it to us along with a screenshot of the application window. How would be the best way to communicate the data to us? Two obvious solutions spring to mind: Email - I'm thinking that the application would connect to an SMTP server set-up by us, with the username/password somehow hidden in the code. SMTP over SSL for security (not of the data being sent, but of the SMTP username/password). Web service - pretty self explanatory. Which of these would be best, or is there a better alternative?

• An Actor "queue" ?

  In Java, to write a library that makes requests to a server, I usually implement some sort of dispatcher (not unlike the one found here in the Twitter4J library: http://github.com/yusuke/twitter4j/blob/master/twitter4j-core/src/main/java/twitter4j/internal/async/DispatcherImpl.java) to limit the number of connections, to perform asynchronous tasks, etc. The idea is that N number of threads are created. A "Task" is queued and all threads are notified, and one of the threads, when it's ready, will pop an item from the queue, do the work, and then return to a waiting state. If all the threads are busy working on a Task, then the Task is just queued, and the next available thread will take it. This keeps the max number of connections to N, and allows at most N Tasks to be operating at the same time. I'm wondering what kind of system I can create with Actors that will accomplish the same thing? Is there a way to have N number of Actors, and when a new message is ready, pass it off to an Actor to handle it - and if all Actors are busy, just queue the message?

Although I was able to PPTP VPN in on 321.321.39.10 (interface) which is the outside interface IP address. and it is static mapped to 172.21.37.20. So I'm thinking there must be something wrong with NAT somewhere? no response from 321.321.39.11 to 321.321.39.14.. Could anyone look over the config and please let me know what I've done wrong? Is there something I've missed? well obviously but.. please help! Thank you.

• Trigger local program execution from browser

  First and foremost: I know it's not right or even good thing to do but my current customer will not cave in. So here's what he is asking for (this is for in-house-behind-a-firewall-etc project). In the web report I need to supply a link which points to the executable script that lives on the universally mapped location (network file server). When user clicks on it it is expected to run on the local client starting local executable which should be pre-installed on the client's box. It should be agnostic to OS (Windows or Linux) and the browser used. Customer doesn't mind to click on angry pop-up alerts but he wants to do it once per client browser (or at minimum - session). QUESTION: Will trusted Java applet be able to do it? Or is the any other (better, simpler) ways of achieving the same? ActiveX control is out of question

• How to package AIR 2 native installer?

  I have made an AIR 2.0 app that uses NativeProcess so it needs to be packaged as a native installer (.exe) rather than a .air file. I first tried using Package Assistant but I kept getting an error telling me it cannot load keystore file. so I tried using the command line I use: pathToAirSDK>adt -args but I get an error telling me that "adt" is not a known command so I try: pathToAirSDK>adt.jar -args but I get a pop up telling me windows does not know how to open adt.jar files. Has anyone packaged a native installer for an AIR 2.0 app? How did you do it? edit forgot to mention I am doing this in windows using the windows command line.

  How do I create a pop panel that docks to the bottom of the screen... The way that I'm doing this is by setting the styling as such: bottom: 10px; position: absolute; This will always set the panel to 10 px from the bottom of the browser window. The problem is that gwt (or gwtp for that matter) is insisting on setting the right and the top of the panel and thus overriding my styling. If I use chrome's element explorer and disable the right and top style rules I get the correct behaviour so one way of doing it is somehow disabling gwt setting of the location of the panel on the screen...?

• Is there a non-blocking version of MessageBox.Show (or something like it)?

  Often you just want to notify the user that something has occurred, but there's really no need for any input from them. In this common scenario, I sometimes see code like this: MessageBox.Show("Something has occurred", "Something", MessageBoxButtons.OK); This code, as we all know, causes a little pop-up window to appear with only an OK button. Now here's the thing: this code blocks (the UI thread). But in the vast majority of cases, it seems to me, if you only have an OK button, there's very little need to block. (Isn't the purpose of blocking typically to receive some input from the user? And if the user's only choice is "OK," in this typical case, isn't blocking pretty pointless?) Obviously I could just write my own little form that does basically exactly what MessageBox.Show does, except that it returns nothing (no DialogResult) and doesn't block. But I was just wondering if something like this exists already that I didn't know about.
