• Collaborative kernel development

  Hi, I have to develop a patch for the linux kernel (2.6) for an university course I'm attending. I have to develop this patch with a friend of mine and we need to edit the same files on our computers (2-3 PCs). So, we want to use something like a collaborative editor and/or a version control system. The problem is that we never used something like that and that we cannot release our software as open source till we take the exam. Obviously, we're using linux.   I have 2 table and I wanna a query with 3 column result in on of them 2 column with view count and title name and in the other 1 column with type_ and i wanna to grouping type_ with max(view count) and show the them title but i didn't have any idea about grouping expression. i think we can solve in by using sub query but i don't know which column use in group by. 2 table join with this expression class pk=resource key i exam this query: SELECT t.title,j.type_ FROM tags asset t,journal article j where type_ in (select type_ from journal article,tags asset where class pk=resource key group by type_) but the answer was wrong

• How can I improve the workflow between developer and designer with Expression Blend?

  We use WPF and Expression Blend 4. I'm trying to improve our workflow by tutoring one of our designers to use it for styling and animation. Slowly but surely I get the impression Blend in itself is to technical for the designer in question. I myself use it only occasionally (it's great for Visual States for instance) because a lot of things are easier done in code or not possible at all in Blend alone. It seems a developer with design experience is a lot more productive with it than a sole designer. Are there any good resources or advice as to how I can improve this workflow?

• Can't connect to wireless without typing sudo modprobe b43 in terminal

  I just upgraded to 12.04 on an old ACER Travelmate 5320 using Broadcom 4311. I wasn't able to connect to the internet through the wireless for a few days. It didn't even display wireless networks. I was finally able to make it work by following the instructions found here: http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#supported However, each time I log on to the computer I have to go to the terminal and type sudo modprobe b43 to make the wireless work. Is there somehow I can avoid this? I have used Ubuntu for many years but always relied on other people to help me with the technical stuff. The terminal is alien to me so I literally follow online forum instructions without knowing what I'm doing. Also, I tried many many things before I managed to make it work. So I'm worried I may have installed something that now conflicts with whatever the sudo modprobe b43 does. Thank you

• How to reinstall Windows 8 after accidentally wiping it off my HDD

  So about half an hour ago I decided to try out Ubuntu and in the process of doing so, my hard drive got wiped. My Windows 8 installation, and all the files with it are gone. Since my laptop came preinstalled with Windows 8, I don't have a disk or anything to use to install it again. I guess I'll have to install all of my things again, but first, I just want to know how to get Windows 8 back(will the serial number on the bottom of my laptop work?) so I can get back to an OS I'm familiar with. Any explanations would be great. Please don't be too technical though.

  Hopefully my last thread about V&V as I found the B.Boehm is text which I just do not understand well (likely my technical English is not that good). http://csse.usc.edu/csse/TECHRPTS/1979/usccse79-501/usccse79-501.pdf Basically he says that verification is about checking that products derived from requirements baseline must correspond to it and that deviation leads only to changes in these derived products (design, code). But he says it begins with design and ends with acceptance tests (you can check the V model inside). The thing is, I have accepted ISO12207 in terms of all testing is validation, yet it does not make any sense here. In order to be sure the product complies with requirements (acceptance test) I need to test it. Also it says that validation problems means that requirements are bad and needs to be changed - which does not happen with testing that testers do, who just checks correspondence with requirements.

• does unused vertices in a 3D object affect performance?

  For my game I need to generate a mesh dynamically. now I'm wondering does it have a noticeable affect in fps if I allocate more vertices than what I'm actually using or not? and does it matter if I'm using DirectX or OpenGL? edit final output will be a w*h cell grid, but for technical issues it's much more easier for me to allocate (w+1)*(h+1) vertices. sure I'll only use w*h vertices in indexing, and I know there is some memory wasting there, but I want to know if it also affect fps or not? (note that mesh is only generated once in each time you play the game)

• How to use only intel graphics and power off radeon?

  I've been using Linux for quite a while in everyday computing and programming. But now i got this new laptop with amazing battery life on windows which runs pretty cool even while gaming. But for some reason on Ubuntu I get like 1/3 battery life and it gets hot even while browsing the web. I have the proprietary drivers for radeon, but I'm thinking about upgrading from Ubuntu 12.04 to 14.04, and I would like to know how can I use only the Intel graphics and have radeon always turned off? Since I do not need the discrete graphics on Ubuntu and I'm pretty sure my problem is related to the radeon sucking up my battery and generating heat. My laptop technical specifications are: Dell latitude 3540 Intel core i7 4500U (with Intel hd4400 graphics ) Ati Radeon HD 8850m with 2GB GDDR5 VRAM 8 GB DDR3L @1600mhz Toshiba 256gb SSD Ubuntu 12.4.3 If you need any additional info, please tell me :)

When I asked the HR for reason, he contacted the technical interviewer and told me that I was syntactically wrong while coding. I used Google Guava for coding. • Is there ongoing work in the kernel team to improve battery life under linux?

  I have read in some forums that the kernel team is working on improving battery life and energy efficiency in linux. Unfortunately our community really lags behind windows and mac in that regard. I would like to read about the reasons why this difference exists with other platforms. Is it purely due to closed hardware specs from vendors or does it has to be with kernel design issues? Apple devices with unix cores have amazing battery times, but they also design their own hardware...just want to understand this issues in a less technical way I know that recent kernel updates in Ubuntu have improved the battery life in most computers, but I was wondering if there is still development going on and where can I read more about it. • How to enable home directory encryption for a particular user?

  I prefer to have a dedicated "administrator" user for technical purposes and that was one I've set up during installation. I've also refused to encrypt the home folder of the user. Now, as I've added a user account for my actual work usage I want my (but not the "administrator") home folder to be encrypted. How to turn this on? If it is not possible then how to enable encryption for all users home directories on a system already installed? I've found questions and answers about how to disable it but am not sure how to enable it.

This is the pseudo code I am given: int mutex = 0; do { while (TestAndSet(&mutex)); // critical section mutiex = 0; // remainder section } while (TRUE); My instructor says that only two of the three necessary conditions (mutual exclusion, progress, and bounded waiting) are met with this code, but I don't understand which one isn't being met...??   I have to develop a basic social network for an academic purpose; but I need some tips for the users management.. The users are subdivided into 3 groups with different privilege: admins,analysts and standards users. For every user should be stored into the database the following information: name,lastname,e-mail,age,password. I'm not quite sure how I should design the database between theese two solutions: 1)one table called 'users' with the 'role' attribute that explain what a user can do and what can't do, and the permissions are managed via php 2)every application user is a database user created with the query 'CREATE ROLE' (It's a postgres database) and he has permissions on some tables granted with the 'GRANT' statement You should take into account that the project is for a database exam.. thanks

• More than 2gb of Music without paid plan possible?

  Hi there, I do not have a paid plan for UbuntuOne and do not intend of buying one, but I do like to buy music from the UbuntuOne Music Store. Is it possible to buy music, once I bought more than 2gb or would I have to move the music out of the UbuntuOne share? In this case, I would suggest to put the music in the official ubuntuone-folder instead of a hidden one. Non-technical users will not understand, why their shared music files are not in this folder, but others are popping up there (e.g. in the webinterface). Best Regards, Lars

• Amnesic Environment

  My team is looking for a technical term which may or may not exist. We are trying to describe an environment, such as a database, which has been built up over time with little or documentation about the change process that has gone into it. Generally these are legacy systems who's original developers have long since moved on and they are in such a tangled and unmanageable state that the only way to recreate the environment, say for testing purposes, is to copy it and do your best guess at re-configuring it for its new purpose. So far the best term we have come up with is Amnesic, such as "setting up the new test environment is going to be a challenge because it is an amnesic db." However, we are still not quite happy with the term and were wondering if a better and/or more accepted term for this situation exists.

• What is the Ubuntu equivalent of the Windows programs Belarc or PC Wizard?

  I provide technical support for several high schools in Spain and I have been building up a inventory of the schools machines. On the windows only computers I normally run PC Wizard to quickly get a good overview of the machines hardware, software and network settings. Is there an equivalent tool preferable with a GUI and an export option to html or pdf in Ubuntu. I have tried a few options such as: Gnomes gconf-editor hardinfo (GUI) lshw (CLI) I'm just looking for an all in one application that builds a detailed profile of the installed software, hardware and network setting of a particular machine. I have found Sysinfo which is quite good, it displays the most important hardware info and allows you to save it to a text file with a neat GUI. I'm still looking for a more complete solution but it's a good start.

• C: Recursive function for inverting an int

  I had this problem on an exam yesterday. I couldn't resolve it so you can imagine the result... Make a recursive function: int invertint( int num) that will receive an integer and return it but inverted, example: 321 would return as 123 I wrote this: int invertint( int num ) { int rest = num % 10; int div = num / 10; if( div == 0 ) { return( rest ); } return( rest * 10 + invert( div ) ) } Worked for 2 digits numbers but not for 3 digits or more. Since 321 would return 1 * 10 + 23 in the last stage. Thanks a lot! PS: Is there a way to understand these kind of recursion problems in a faster manner or it's up to imagination of one self?
