  We have installed windows 2008 R2 enterprise on a Dell server. This server is placed remotely in data center and only administrator is going to access it for maintenance purpose. No multiple users or client remote access is needed Now during 'remote desktop services' role installation network admin accidentally selected 'per user/device' licensing mode. Because of which now 120 days free try period is ticking. Since only administrator is going to access this server remotely we need to have 'Remote control for administrators' licensing mode (like windows 2003) on it. How we can change licensing mode from 'per user/device' to 'Remote control for administrators' on 2008 server? Also will it be possible to do this change remotely using RDC session itself? or do i need to change it using physical console (if remote access is gonna be disabled during switch)?

  I recently asked a question about upgrading from 2003 to 2008, but i realised this is a lot harder to do, the only reason i want to upgrade is to have increase the RAM Windows 2003 Standard Edition R2 only supports 4GB Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 supports up to 32GB Windows 2003 Datacentre Edition R2 supports up to 64GB So basically i need to do an in-place upgrade to either Enterpirse or Datacentre without losing any data is this possible? Also is one easier to upgrade to then the other?

  When trying to turn on Remote Access on my Windows Home Server (HP MediaSmart Ex485, MediaSmart Server 3.0, Power Pack 3), I am not able to continue through the wizard as this first check fails: "Verifying that your remote Web site is available locally" Everything else on the server works fine, including being able to: Ping server RDP to server Access all shares as expected Browse to both http://servername and http://servername:55000 I have noticed though that I am unable to browse to http://servername:56000 as I should be able to do. I've performed a server recovery to reset the installation to factory defaults, with no such luck.

  So, I'm trying to update Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 via the Windows Store, but every time I attempt to, the update downloads properly, but then I get the error: Windows 8.1 This app wasn't installed - view details When I click on it, it says: Something happened and the Windows 8.1 could not be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0x80070004 Try again Cancel Install What does this mean? A quick Google search yields nothing. I have tried rebooting, clearing the store cache, and resetting Windows Update. A quick chkdsk scan shows no errors.   Trying to build an Exchange server solution for a company and they want me to look into licensing for Windows. I'm going to be purchasing the necessary server licenses for Windows Server 2012 Standard and Microsoft Exchange 2013 Enterprise. I just have a few questions about the CAL's thing which seems like a complete ripoff to me. How are CAL's tracked for both Windows Server and Exchange? Is it tied to Active Directory profiles? What happens if I dont have the necessary CAL's for Windows Server? Will a client be denied access from Active Directory? Is there any enforcement for this? • Windows XP Installation issue - cannot find hard disk

  A friend of mine gave me a laptop with Windows 8 installed and nothing else. I don't like it so I am trying to remove it by installing Windows XP. I have a windows XP installation CD that I have used before and worked fine, but didn't work when I tried to install it on the Windows 8 machine. It keeps telling me I don't have a drive to install to. Then I log into Windows 8 again and install check partitions. I found 2 and tried to make a new one but it will only let me make one of 69mb. Next, I tied to find a way to go back to XP with BCD install and try to set the boot loader for XP but it wasnt there. Somehow I deleted the bootloader for Windows 8 and now it asks me for a recovery tool for media. I am not familiar with the laptop specs, but it is a Toshiba with about 250GB storage, and above 1GHz processor.

• Installing Windows 7 destroyed my dual boot setup

  I have a laptop on which I have two drives with separate Windows XP installs, one barebones for music production, the other "normal" Windows XP with Office etc. (unfortunately the bios won't give a boot disk choice). Normally I would be presented with two Windows XPs on booting. Selecting the second one would get me into the "normal" installation on disk 1 (C:). Selecting the first in boot order would give me D:\ (disk 2) with the barebones XP. However, I installed Windows 7 Home onto disk 1 (C:), but there were no dual boot options anymore, even though I installed DualBoot Pro and added Windows XP disk D:. The options now show up, but selecting Windows XP just turns into a reboot back to where I started.

  I'm installing a 2008 instance on a Server 2003 machine which is already running SQL 2005. I need to set up domain groups for the security setup step: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms179530.aspx On Windows Server 2003, specify domain groups for SQL Server services. All resource permissions are controlled by domain-level groups that include SQL Server service accounts as group members. The security admins had to make my account a domain admin - which they were hesitant to do. The account under which SQL Server Setup is running must have permissions to add accounts to the domain groups. Is there a specific security setting which would allow my account to add accounts to a group? UPDATE: I'm looking for specific instructions. I have a global group called domain\servicegroup - what do I tell the security folks to do. I'd love to figure it out myself, but I don't have access to this stuff.

• Linux clients and Windows Servers can connect but not windows clients

  This is driving me insane because I can't make head or tails of it. We have two DCs (W2K3 SP1) and I'v tried this once on each machine as a sanity check. DHCP is being served by either one of the machines and all machines get an address no problem. The servers can connect/ping/browse to the www and so can all our linux clients. But NONE of our windows clients (all windows 7). I can do anything within the network, I can even ping the firewall/router but nothing from the windows clients is leaving the confines of our subnet. I don't get it. The linux and windows clients are both served from the same DHCP server, the gateway is the same, everything is the same. Anyone care to take a shot at how to resolve this? I tried adding explicit routes at the clients, but still no go. TIA SMIM

  Hi All, I'm having problem with my GPO changes, that I'd like to force to my terminal server users here's what I've done: I've made some necessary changes in one of the Domain Controllers to disable the GPO which applies to my Terminal Server user OU and then I go to the Terminal Server mstsc /admin console to perform the GPo refresh by using /force parameter, however I got this error instead: C:\Documents and Settings\Adminisratorgpupdate /force Refreshing Policy... User Policy Refresh has not completed in the expected time. Exiting... User Policy Refresh has completed. Computer Policy Refresh has not completed in the expected time. Exiting... Computer Policy Refresh has completed. but then the changes still got no effect yet as I logged in to the terminal server ? is there any way of how to make it in effect immediately please ? Thanks

  We have recently replaced all of our 2003 server domain controllers to 2008 r2 and have tried to implement PSO's but have found that the domain functional level must be raised to 2008. We have a mac server in our environment that runs open directory and it is integrated into AD. Does anyone know if I do raise the domain functional level (which makes sense since we only have 2008 r2 domain controllers) what the repercussions (if any) there will be on the macs in the environment? Macs are running 10.6.2 and mac server runs the same. Mac server is running OD and also bound to AD.

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • Windows 8 can't open any modern UI app

  I just upgraded my machine with Windows 7 Pro x64, to Windows 8 Pro x64, with the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. Everything went great, but none of the Modern UI Apps open, and they do not show any error messages or warnings, they just close right away I opened them. I tried to open Skydrive, Windows Store, Photo App,Music App, Bing, Videos , Finances and all the available Modern UI apps on my screen My screen resolution is 1080p, so it is not a resolution issue, I'm using a Windows account , but i switched to Local account but didn't solved the issue. I ran Windows Update and updated my nVidia video drivers. I also tried an app called "Metro App Troubleshooter" without luck

  I tried to create a full-text index and got this error: Msg 9967, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 A default full-text catalog does not exist in database 'foo' or user does not have permission to perform this action. FYI--I connected to the target sql server with Windows Authentication. What do I need to do in Sql Server 2005 and/or in Windows Server 2003 to get permissions? • Map FTP folder to folder on different FTP server

  In my team we work a lot with FTP. We upload and download files from several different servers daily. Currently every member of the team manages access credentials to each FTP server locally on their own machine. I am looking for a way to set up a central FTP server that we can connect to, and from there, navigate to folders that each represent one of the other FTP servers that we connect to daily. Something like this: In-house central FTP server: |- FolderA --> server A root folder |- FolderB --> server B root folder |- FolderC --> server C root folder A setup like this, would mean that we can manage access credentials on the central FTP server, and team members would only need to have the access credentials to the central FTP server, and from there they could navigate to the other servers through these "virtual" folders. We could potentially develop our own custom FTP server that just forward requests to the remote FTP servers, but i feel like something like this (or something similar) would already have been done.   I'm a big fan of FolderSize, but unfortunately it works only on Windows XP. Even reading this and this, I'm not convinced that I cannot to have a column showing the folder size on Windows Explorer. Even with all "problems" FolderSize worked like a charm in WindowsXP. In a sysadmin life, FolderSize is explendid. Before select a lot of folders to send to backup in DVDs, I can check directly in Windows Explorer the size of the folders and get a set of folders with 4.3Gb to burn in a DVD. In another situation, I can view in the root folder the size of the bigger folders in the hard drive and start a good strategy of backup/partitioning/transfer to another drive/etc. If desired, I can tell a lot of another needs that in my sysadmin life I need a tool like FolderSize... There is someone that is actively developing a solution to show folder size on Windows Explorer in Vista/Seven Windows? What the problems that I can face if I develop myself that "add-in" for Windows Explorer?

• Restoring Mac-bootcamp-windows-partition image to Windows machine

  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  Here is described part of windows boot process. I would like to ask if there is a way to change boot folder, I mean to use something else instead of C:\WINDOWS. And of course that something else is a copy of Windows directory. It looks like bcdedit is good for that purpose but I'm not sure how to use that. That I want is to change path, which currently is \Windows\system32\winload.exe to \Windows Copy\system32\winload.exe Another thing I have found out is registry, HKLM\BCD00000000\Objects\{df90fe29-c40d-11e2-a7bb-92410b6e649d}\Elements\12000002::Element value is \Windows\system32\winload.exe so changing this also may be promising. But I'm not sure if I should change registry value and don't know how to use bcdedit, so any related help will be appreciated.
