• Should I use interface builder or not?

  I'd like to know more about the pros and cons of using interface builder when developing iPhone/iPad apps. I've written a fairly complex and customized app that's on the app store right now, but all of the interfaces are hand coded as they are fairly complex. I've customised the navigation and tab bars with backgrounds, table view cells are manually drawn for speed, and some views are complex and scalable with many subviews. I'm pondering whether or not to start using interface builder but I'm not sure to what extent I'll use it and whether it's worth it at all. Is it quicker? Can things still be easily customised? Any advice would be most welcome!

• Should I be worried about sending Apk to client before getting paid?

  I am working on an Android app for a client. The app is practically finished, and next week I'll have a meeting with the client to present it. He'll test everything, and upon approving it he will make the payment and I'll give him the source code and publish it on Google Play. Today he called me asking for the Apk so that he can start testing it. I am worried that if we don't close the deal (for one reason or another) he might get someone to reverse engineer the Apk and get my source code/app anyway, even if obfuscated with ProGuard (I never tried, but according to this SO thread it's not that difficult to reverse engineer an Apk). My question: Am I being paranoid here and should just send the client the Apk (cause perhaps the ProGuard obfuscation is enough to make the source code useless) , or are my worries reasonable and I should stick to getting paid before delivering anything?

• Question about [literally] mapping location based on an IP address.

  I've been bored lately and I want to start a new project. I was looking at a website mentioned in a different question (http://www.grapevinegame.com/), and I thought the map and how it plots a point based on someone's IP (I assume) is pretty nifty. I want to do something like that, but I have no idea how it's done. I know you can get latitude and longitude, city and state, and some more with some already-written scripts, but how would you plot those on a map of the world? I've seen it other places, like Google Analytics and such, as well. It seems like a neat thing to be able to do, so I was just wondering how exactly it works. :-p.

• Php/Javascript to make a browser game?

  I've been on and off intrested in making a text based browser game. I have been turned off by the idea because of the daunting amount of things to learn. PHP (or another sever side scripting language) Javascript HTML MySql And the fact of severs and apache.. Can I just pay for web hosting and by-pass having to set-up apache? Also how long will it take me to learn all thoose things well enough to start work on my game? Should I just stick with Flash and then C# for XNA?

• REST client website login

  I have written a REST service that uses WSSE as an authentication method but i want to be able to use this rest service through a browser by creating a website around the service. I want the user to be able to log in on the website then when they view, for example the "view users" page an ajax request is made to test.com/users and back comes the list. The part i'm trying to get my head around is the logging in/out on the website and keeping the user logged in across pages. Since in a true REST implementation there's no state held on the server, i can't use $_SESSION and now i don't know where to start! What is the best way to go about this? Do i still need to store session information on the server then possibly use cURL to make the request? Thanks Jay

• .NET platform independant sync framework

  Question: I need to synchronize a few ActionScript files from my computer to a network share (backup). I saw a quick fix would be using Microsoft Sync Framework for this, and write a windows service. My problem is I also use Linux, and before I start with MS vendor lockin, is there any sync framework/library/whatever I could use that works accross platform? Or does the MS sync framework work on Linux, too? It is my understanding that it is a wrapper around some com objects, thus it wouldn't work. All I need is synchronizing files. So never mind the database part, although it would be nice to have it, too.

• Flash CS5 AS3 drop shadow filter won't print

  Hello all, I've tried searching quite a bit to discover why I don't seem to be able to print drop shadow filters from within Flash. I have trouble printing, but if the movieclip I want to print has or contains a drop shadow, that clip will print sans the drop shadow. Anyone have any insight as to why this might be happening? If you want to try it out yourself, here is the simple print code I'm using.   When I move the mouse over the window, the program runs much faster (cc. 3 times). This is a real time webcam .Net/Mono application running on a MacBook. On Windows works perfect. Is this maybe a power saving function of the laptop?   This question is for learning purposes. Suppose I am writing a simple SQL admin console using CGI and Python. At http://something.com/admin, this admin console should allow me to modify a SQL database (i.e., create and modify tables, and create and modify records) using an ordinary form. In the least secure case, anybody can access http://something.com/admin and modify the database. You can password protect http://something.com/admin. But once you start using the admin console, information is still transmitted in plain text. So then you use HTTPS to secure the transmitted data. Questions: To describe to a learner, how would you incrementally add security to the least secure environment in order to make it most secure? How would you modify/augment my three (possibly erroneous) steps above? What basic tools in Python make your steps possible? Optional: Now that I understand the process, how do sophisticated libraries and frameworks inherently achieve this level of security?

• Bash script with regex not behaving on Ubuntu

  I have a Bash script that is working on my OpenSuSE box, but when copied across to my Ubuntu box, is not working. The script reads in from a file.   An application recieves the WM_SYSCOMMAND message when the user selects a menu item command on the system menu, and so wParam can be SC_CLOSE, SC_CONTEXTHELP, SC_MAXIMIZE, SC_MINIMIZE, SC_RESTORE etc. That's logical. But one can also send the WM_SYSCOMMAND message to send commands to the Windows Shell. For instance, one can display the start menu (SC_TASKLIST), activate the screen saver (SC_SCREENSAVE), and turn off the monitor (SC_MONITORPOWER). This does not make sense, does it? What does this have to do with the application's system menu? This is more of a "system command", i.e. more of a completely other interpretation of the name "WM_SYSCOMMAND" of the message. It's like the message is used to send command requests to the system. Why is this message used for two seemingly entirely different things, and what thing does the name "SYSCOMMAND" refer to (command on the system menu, or command of the operating system)?

  I have a vector declared as a global variable that I need to be able to reuse. If I do "objVector.clear()", it removes all 100 objects and I would have a vector with a size of 0. I need it to be a size of 100 at the start of every loop.

• SSRS 2005 Keep textbox and textfield together when page break occurs

  Problem I don't have a details row or anything. I have simply a body and I dragged on textboxes for labeling textfields from my dataset. The problem is when one of the fields has too much data for the current page, it "page-breaks" at the start of the field leaving the textbox (label for the field) behind on the previous page. What I've tried Put the data field and the textbox label a) inside a rectangle - didn't work b) inside a list and the list inside a rectangle - didn't work c) inside a list with keep together property set to TRUE or FALSE - didn't work Question How would I group the textbox and the textfield so that regardless of where the pagebreak happens it includes its label?

• customizing Django look and feel in Python

  I am learning Django and got it to work with wsgi. I'm following the tutorial here: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/1.1/intro/tutorial01/ My question is: how can I customize the look and feel of Django? Is there a repository of templates that "look good", kind of like there are for Wordpress, that I can start from? I find the tutorial counterintuitive in that it goes immediately toward customizing the admin page of Django, rather than the main pages visible to users of the site. Is there an example of a "typical" Django site, with a decent template, that I can look at and built on/modify? The polls application is again not very representative since it's so specialized. any references on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I want that objects authenticate messages, before using them, with digital signatures, but I don't know where to start to implement this. In my head, the Root object must have a public/private key pair, and the Client too. When a message is sent, a digital signature of the hash is added, and when it is received, the signature is checked. Is the Protocol part where I need to add these adds and checks? Thank you

I wanna create a usb driver, so my own C application be able to get into my flash drive and take information from the imported flash drive. OS: Windows Please don't close it again I still cant find my answer... more details I start my app/which contains my USB driver/ i plug-in my flash and its shows in Explorer that this drive is plugged and it is accessible, while that's happening, my app is checking that file data.txt EXIST if that file exist, program run next function, if not program, my program runs down/exit/! • Sync between local service with a thread and an activity

  Hello all, I'm trying to think of a way on how to sync in between a local service and the main activity. The local service has, A thread with a socket connection that could receive data at any time. A list/array with data. At any time the socket could receive data and add it to the list. The activity needs to display this data. So when the activity starts up it needs to attach or start the local service and fetch the list. It also needs to be notified if the list is updated. I think I would need to sync my list somehow so the local service does not add a new entry to it while the activity fetches the list when connecting to the service. Any ideas? Thanks.

• Displaying name instead of ID PHP MySQL

  Hi, I need something simple; I have page where a user clicks an author to see the books associated with that author. On my page displaying the list of books for the author, I want a simple HTML title saying: 'The books for: AUTHORNAME' I can get the page to display author ID but not the name. When the user clicks the link in the previous page of the author, it looks likes this: <a href="viewauthorbooks.php?author_id=<?php echo $row['author_id']?>"><?php echo $row['authorname']?></a> And then on the 'viewauthorbooks.php?author_id=23' I have declared this at the start: $author_id = $_GET['author_id']; $authorname = $_GET['authorname']; And finally, 'The books for: AUTHORNAME, where it says AUTHORNAME, I have this: echo $authorname (With PHP tags, buts its not letting me put them in!) And this doesnt show anything, however if I change it to author_id, it displays the correct author ID that has been clicked, but its not exactly user friendly!! Can anyone help me out!

Suppose I have an app say XYZ installed in an android phone and than I receive an email from the mail server which contains a link like http://XYZ.com/?params(i.e. X=1&Y=2&Z=3) now on click of this link I want to open the XYZ app if it is installed in the phone and in the Activity I would like to get these parameters X,Y and Z and if the app is not installed user should be redirected to play store for downloading XYZ app and after installation app takes charge and behaves as if it was already installed (Opening the first activity with those parameters). How can I achieve that ? I have no idea where to start so even the smallest pointer in right direction will be of great help.

• O(N log N) Complexity - Similar to linear?

  Hey All, So I think I'm going to get buried for asking such a trivial but I'm a little confused about something. I have implemented quicksort in Java and C and I was doing some basic comparissons. The graph came out as two straight lines, with the C being 4ms faster than the Java counterpart over 100,000 random integers. The code for my tests can be found here; android-benchmarks I wasn't sure what an (n log n) line would look like but I didn't think it would be straight. I just wanted to check that this is the expected result and that I shouldn't try to find an error in my code. I stuck the formula into excel and for base 10 it seems to be a straight line with a kink at the start. Is this because the difference between log(n) and log(n+1) increases linearly? Thanks, Gav
