• Problem with ubuntu 10.10 running from USB drive

  Hi Geeks, I recently downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 and created an USB drive with that. I started to run the Ubuntu from that USB drive. But I am facing so much problem. I am thinking why its not so much easy like Windows to do all my job in ubuntu. Always I get some error message or to install something. This time I am getting the following errors. I am trying to download and install Aircrack-ng. So used the command sudo apt-get install aircrack-ng. But the installation stops with the following error : update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated) cp: cannot stat `/vmlinuz': No such file or directory dpkg: error processing bcmwl-kernel-source (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 Errors were encountered while processing: initramfs-tools bcmwl-kernel-source E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1) I don't even have the aptitude command installed till now. Are all these errors because of I am running the ubuntu from USB drive? Is there any simple and easy way to go to Ubuntu Software Center and download all the required essentials at one shot and then Aircrack-ng? I could not find the Aircrack-ng in Ubuntu Software Center Can anybody give me detail steps to solve all my problems above. I am frustrated searching for updates and installations. When something works and something does not work. Can anybody suggest me how I should proceed after installing ubuntu to run on a USB drive. So that I can use the OS like Windows. Like software download,wireless driver, sound, video, documents, C:, D: all things should be there. Please somebody help.

• Ubuntu inside VirtualBox is slow

  I am running an Ubuntu instance on VirtualBox inside XP. Here are the details: Host: Windows XP Pro Guest: Ubuntu 8.10 Total RAM: 3GB RAM For VM: 1GB Total Video Memory: 128MB Video Memory for VM: 40MB Hard Drive: 200GB Hard Drive for VM: 30GB Processor: 2.80GHz Core Duo The problem is that whenever I am inside the virtual machine, things seem so much slower in general. For example Firefox, Eclipse take longer to load, dragging windows show a lag etc. I have tried running Ubuntu before (not inside a VM) and it seemed fantastically fast. So I am disappointed to have to deal with this situation. But I need access to the XP partition without having to reboot and hence the attempt. I am surprised with the perceived slowness since the whole world seems to be doing virtualization and I cannot imagine everyone works on slow systems knowingly. My question is - is there something I should be doing to boost performance? Am I doing something wrong? This is my home machine and I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask. Thanks.

• How do I enable Ubuntu Gnome system tools

  I am running Ubuntu 10 with Gnome 2.30.2. This is a VMWare workstation image provided by another company that I do not have support in this regard. I am trying to access the graphical tools for configuring the network, users, and services but the System-Administration menu does not have these options listed. The main issue I am trying to solve is to correct the problems with the gnome menu options and network settings I have the gnome-system-tools package installed, and I am unable to run command-line versions of the tools, such as nm-applet (I get no GUI if I run that command, the process is running in the background). I realize that I can perform many tasks command-line, but I would like to use the GUI for administrative functions as I am not overly proficient for all command for restarting services and setting a static IP with a specific gateway. Further, I can run gnome-nettool, but I cannot change the IP, I can only see my network card. nm-connection-editor does not show any network cards that I can configure to change the IP. Currently, I am getting a DHCP through my NAT in VMWare, I want to set it to a specific IP address though. • Suspending/Screen Going Off When Still In Use (Ubuntu & Arch)

  I have a laptop (HP Pavilion G6) that was running Ubuntu and for a while now (at least 6 months) has been having a problems randomly suspending whilst still in use with a full battery and still being charged. Originally the problem was with Ubuntu so I first attempted to disable suspend using every way I could find (gui settings + dconf editor) this didn't work and it still kept suspending so I ended up switching to Arch Linux. Unfortunately not long after switching to Arch Linux I ended up experiencing the same problems. So yet again I modified the settings in /etc/systemd/logind.conf to prevent it from suspending and this time it worked, kind of. Now I am experiencing the screen going off and I have to change to a different tty (by using ctrl-alt-fx, which was something I also found I had to do sometimes when waking up from suspend in Ubuntu) to get the screen to go back on. The strange thing is this only happens when running a Linux distros and only occasionally (e.g. it may happen once/twice a week at most). But when it does happen it can happen multiple times in a row. And it only seems to happen when I am using it. This may just mean that it hasn't happened yet when I am not but generally if I leave it to run something or play a video it hasn't occurred only when I am using it regardless of which program I am using (e.g. it has occurred when using firefox, vim, even when using a virtualbox vm). At first I thought it could be the CPU temperature but after monitoring it I discovered it occurred a lot of the time when my CPU was less than 50 °C. I then checked /var/log/* but could not see anything related to it suspending only a few standard things from when it was woken up. I am really out of ideas and really hoping someone can help. • Experience with asymmetrical (non-identical hardware) SQL Server 2005 / Win 2003 cluster

  I am reasonably good at dealing with SQL Server clusters; I am wondering if folks have experience, good or bad, using a mix of different models of servers from the same vendor in one SQL 2005 cluster. Suppose: I have one more powerful, more RAM, more shizzle box and one less powerful, less memory, less shizzle box bound together in a 2-node cluster. These would be HP DL380 and 580 machines (not that it should matter) I understand AND automate the process of managing memory for each SQL instance, so there's no memory contention when SQL instances fail over. Basically I am thinking a CLR proc will monitor the instances and self-regulate memory caps on each instance, so that they won't page or step on one another. I get the fact the instances might be slower and or under memory pressure if they share a "lesser" node, and that's OK. The business can deal with a slower instance in a server-problem scenario. Reasonable? Any "gotchas" to watch out for? More info 10/28: doing some experiments with a test cluster I find that reconfiguring max/min memory is OK PROVIDED the instance isn't already under memory pressure. If I torture the system with a huge query that demands a big chunk of RAM, and simultaneously adjust the memory allocation to a smaller value than what is being actively used, it's possible to run the instance out of memory and have it halt and restart itself (unhappy situation). Many ugly out-of-memory messages in the error log, crashing, burning... It's an extreme case, but good to know. Seems, then, that it would only be really safe to set this on startup of the instance, as in have a startup script that says "I am on node1, so my RAM settings are X or I am on node two, so they are Y," like this: http://sqlblog.com/blogs/aaron_bertrand... • Exchange 2010 mail routing with Hub Transport in multiple sites

  I have two separate physical sites, Site A and Site B. In site A, I have following: 2 CAS servers 2 Hub Transport servers 2 Mailbox servers 2 Edge servers In site B, I have the following: 1 CAS 1 Hub 1 Mailbox 1 Edge Currently everything is working out of site A. That is, all users are housed on mailboxes that are in site A and all inbound mail flow is pointing to site A. I would eventually like to be able to move some of the mailboxes to site B without causing a disruption for resliency and redundancy purposes but I am not quite sure how to go about setting this up or if it is even possible. So far I have created an Edge subscription in site B and am able to send emails out from test accounts set up with mailboxes on the site B Mailbox server. However, I am unable to receive incoming mail messages and am confused. So I'm thinking incoming mail messages are still being directed to site A and then they are getting stuck because there is no way to route the mail to the site B mailboxes. Is this assumption correct? I am unfamiliar with mail flow and routing so I am not really sure what I need to be looking at? Would I add the site B hub transport to the Edge subscription in site A? Or I guess more specifically, how would I go about enabling communication and mail flow between mailboxes split up on site A and B?

• What tools can I use to locate the IP of a machine on my network?

  I am logged in to a remote Windows Server machine and am trying to attach it to a VPN for a LAN that I am also connected to locally from another Windows machine using Remotr Desktop. I can connect the remote machine to the VPN but when I do so, I lose my remote desktop connection. I am now in a situation where I know/think that the remote machine is on my LAN, but do not know what its current IP is and can therefor not connect to it again. I do not have any control over the infrastructure, all I have is a remote machine that I do control, and another machine that I also control that is connected to the same LAN as I'm trying to get the remote machine on using the existing VPN. What tools are available for Windows to allow me to locate the machine on my LAN again? I am imagining that there must be a tool that broadcasts the machines new IP using multicast, or tries to log in to a server component running somewhere with a know IP. Effectively, I am looking for some software that I can run on my remote machine, as well as my local machine, to allow me to discover the new IP address (on the LAN) assigned to the remote machine after connecting to the VPN.

I am able to receive the Responses for all the requests i.e., DESCRIBE it sends back the 200 OK SETUP with transport: RTP/AVP:unicast:client_port=4568:4569 got the 200 OK Message back Sent PLAY, and got the OK Message After that how to get the audio and video frames? I have searched on blogs, but all say to listen at client_port but I am not receiving any packets. Please let me know am I doing correctly.

  I have been using WatiN with IE with great success, however am now wanting to move onto Chrome. It seems to me that if I can just create an instance of a Chrome browser it should be a similar process, but creating an instance of Chrome is proving to be a tricky task.   I am trying to implement validation using IDataErrorInfo or INotifyDataErrorInfo but either way I am struggling to make it work only once user start entering data or clicking save button. Since I am using MVVM, I am setting my view's datacontext to ViewModel and my ViewModel is implementing IDataErrorInfo / INotifyDataErrorInfo. • What is a good layout for a somewhat advanced home network and storage solution?

  My home network/storage needs are changing and I am searching for some opinions and starting points on what a good network/storage layout would be that can serve my needs for a few years into the future. I think I have a decent starting point for equipment, but I am also willing to invest fairly heavily in a solution that can last me for a while. I am a bit of a tech nerd and I have a moderate tolerance for setup of the solution. I would prefer if maintenance of the system is somewhat low once it is setup, but I am willing to accept some tradeoffs. Existing equipment: Router - Netgear WNDR3700 (gigabit) Router - DLink Gamerlounge DGL-4300 (gigabit) Switch - 16 port Trendnet green switch (gigabit) Switch - 5 port Trendnet green (gigabit) Computer - i7-950 office computer (gigabit ethernet) Computer - Q6600 quad core media center, hooked up to TV, records shows (gigabit ethernet) Computer - Acer 1810T ultraportable laptop (gigabit and N ethernet) NAS - Intel SS4200-E (gigabit) External hard drive - 2TB WD Green drive (esata) All kinds of miscellaneous network connected TV, Bluray, Verizon network extender, HDhomerun TV tuners, etc. Requirements: -Robust backup solution for a growing collection of huge family picture files and personal files, around 1.5TB. (Including offsite backup) -Central location for all user's files, while also keeping them secure from each other. -Storage for terabytes of movie backups and recorded TV, and access to them from all computers (maybe around 4TB eventually) -Possibility to host files to friends and family easily Nice to have: -Backup of terabytes of movie backups Intriguing possibilities: -Capability to have users' Windows desktops and files look the same from all network computers I am not sure if the new Windows Home Server 2011 would fit into this well, if I need a domain server, how best to organize my backups, or how to most effectively use RAID. Currently I am simply backing up all computers to a RAID 1 on the NAS box, which I was thinking could prevent a situation where I reach for a backup and find that the disk is corrupt. One possibility that I am thinking about now is simply using my media center PC with a huge RAID of hard drives on which all files are stored. Pseudo-backup of all files would be present because of the RAID, but important files would also be backed up off site via carrying hard drives to work. But what if corruption seeps into the files and the corrupted data is then backed up? Does RAID protect against this? I really want to take next to zero risks with the irreplaceable files. I can handle some degree of risk with the movies and other files. I'm looking for critiques on this idea as well as other possibilities. To summarize, my goal is high functionality, media capable, and robust backup of irreplaceable files.

Using "TimeZoneInfo" I am getting all the timezones available from the system. • Communication software wanted: email, sms, IM, phone calls [closed]

  I am searching for a software solution that integrates / unifies my communication. I use email, instant messaging, SMS and phone. I would like to get all emails, SMS, instant messaging dialogs and meta-data about phone calls into one application. Important is that I can access all past communication with one application. There should be a global address-book to map the communication data to persons or organizations. I want all the communication data in one place to access and backup it easily. The software solution is not required to be multi-user application or server application. It is just for one user (me) only, but server or multi-user applications are not excluded. I may run it on a server hardware. It should run on Linux (Lubuntu / Ubuntu prefered). Free and OpenSource software is prefered. It would be nice if I could perform new communication (like writing a new email, sms, etc.) with one application, but that is not a must have requirement. I could also work with different applications dedicated for different types of communication like IM-application for IM and email-application for email, if all that communication data from the specialized applications will be delivered to one single place where I can access and backup it. I have an android phone and currently I am using Google contacts as the address-book. In the long term this may change, to get back the control over my data. I did some Internet search but did not find a nice solution, yet. If I am looking for unified messaging and unified communication, am I on the right track? The current Thunderbird version has IM functionality integrated. Did not try it, yet. For SMS it may be possible to use an app to send every SMS (incoming and outgoing) as an email, but I am not sure if those SMS-emails can be mapped to an address-book contact. I don't remember exactly, but isn't there a Google android app (I think Google voice) integrating SMS into google services? But in Germany this function has not been released, yet. Maybe a groupware solution would solve the requirements, but I don't have much experience with it. As communication possibilites are groing, I am woundering that there seems to be such a big gap of solutions. I can't believe I am the only one who would like solution, better integrating all the communication channels more easily. If you know a software solution that solves these requirements (partly) I would be glad if you tell me about it. Thanks in advance.

• So I want to separate my Program Files from the hard disk with the other system files. What is the b

  So I am running Windows 7 as my only OS. I have two hard drives on my computer. The first one is a 74GB Western Digital 10K RPM Raptor. The second one is a 1TB Seagate Barracuda (couldn't remember if it was a 7200.12 or some other decimal after the 7200). The OS in installed to the Raptor and I am just using the Barracuda for storage. With this setup, in case you couldn't guess already, the Raptor fills up quick and I am constantly having to maintain file locations. And although it is nice to have that quicker boot time and program loading, the time spent maintaining the drive makes me waste more time overall. So I am looking for a way to try to keep it clear while still keeping up system loading speeds. A performance hit on games and such is easily acceptable and as long as I can guarantee a 5GB space on the Raptor, I can always just temporarily move the disc image there. So I am figuring that having games installed like Boarderlands and Mass Effect, as well as having large files such as linux distro DVD disc images in My Documents, I probably should be moving my personal files and Program Files directories to the Barracuda. I currently have folders on the Barracuda for this, but this means routinely copying files over and I can't really do anything with the Program Files folder that already exists. The best I can do is remember to designate the install directory of any program installation to the alternative install directory, which I can't seem to get to ever work right with Steam. With that in mind, is there a way that is not too drastic to let me just change some folders and system settings once and everything works fine afterwards for my setup? I have considered just reinstalling Windows 7 to the Barracuda but that would defeat the purpose of the Raptor except for running disc images off of. I am also heard a bit about being able to use symlinks to fix this, but I have also heard that symlinks in Windows are not necessarily the same and not as well supported on Windows. An example a friend mentioned was something about how if you have a symlink in Windows on a small hard drive to a large hard drive and the contents the symlink points to is larger than the small hard drive's capacity, then Windows will think the smaller hard drive is full. So is there a fix/workaround that will let me use symlinks across hard drives without the issues or is there a better solution I am not being told about, not mentioning, or not thinking of?

  I am creating a library API which will take the backup of all the VM's running on KVM hypervisor. My VM's can be of any type. I am taking this backup from a remote machine and need to put the backup at remote server. I have KVM, Libvirt installed on my system. Some of my VM's are LVM based and some are normal VM's running on KVM. I research and found out an excellent perl script for taking the backup http://pof.eslack.org/2010/12/23/best-solution-to-fully-backup-kvm-virtual-machines/ but since I am developing this library in C++ I cannot use it however it has given me a good understanding of how it will work. One thing I didnot able to sort out is if my VM's are not created using virt-manager or are created using any other tool them virsh system list command does not give them in the list of running VM's however they are running perfectly on my KVM server. Is there a way to list these VM's in my system list anyhow? secondly, when I am taking backup from the remote machine I am getting out of my ssh mode as soon as my libvirt command finishes and for every command I need to ssh again, Is there a way that I do not need to ssh each and every time? I have already used the rsa key for ssh but when once my command finishes my control moves to the remote machine again and try to find out my source VM location in remote machine's local drives which in turn fails it. here is the main problem I am facing. also for the LVM based VM I am able to take the live backup but for non LVM based my machines are getting suspended and not been able to take the live backup. Since my library will work on the remote machine only I might not know the VM's configruation on the KVM server. so need to make it consistent for all the VM's. Please share any thing related to this issue so that I may be able to take the live backup of the non lvm vm's also. I'll update my working and any research findings time to time to all of you.
