• Access internal IP using public IP

  Hi, I have a DSL modem with a public IP address (201.206.x.x), and I have a web server in my internal network (192.168.0.50). I set up the modem to forward requests to port 80 to my web server, so, if I access 201.206.x.x from outside my network, it shows my web page, the same happens if I access 192.168.0.50 from a computer inside my network. Now, the problem is when I try to access 201.206.x.x from my internal network, the browser tries to connect to the DSL modem configuration, instead of redirecting my request to my Web server. Which settings do I have to change in the modem to set up this redirection? Thanks!

• Lightning strike causes fast download?

  Ok, REALLY strange question. My friend says he was downloading a 14 GB file at about 1 mb/s when suddenly there was a lightning strike outside and momentarily the download speed jumped to 10,000,000 GB/s. The file finnished downloading. He even has the screenshot to prove it. I also trust him and don't believe that he would be lying. So my question is: how is this even possible?? Is there just the possibility that the file was about to finish downloading anyway and the lightning strike coincided with a freak download speed calculation error?

  I recently had a Joomla site hacked, so I'm trying to harden the site a bit. There's a section in the recommended .htaccess that restricts outside access to the xml files that come with extensions. However, it also keeps my sitemap.xml file from being accessed. How do I allow a certain file whiles keeping the rest? here's the default code: <Files ~ "\.xml$"> Order allow,deny Deny from all Satisfy all </Files> and my modification that caused a 500 error: <Files ~ "(?!sitemap)\.xml$"> Order allow,deny Deny from all Satisfy all </Files>

• Best way to create a common folder when creating new users that is a drop box, readable and writeable by all users

  What is the best way to provide a common drop box for all users, so that any user that is a part of a particular group can read and write to and from the directory? I thought of creating a directory outside of the /home directory, creating a group specifically for accessing the directory, then adding all desired users to that group, and finally adding a symlink to the home directory of each user that points to the drop box folder. That seems like a lot of work. Is there a better way? I'm running ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

  At our office, any of our Windows 7 Clients get this error message when we try and RDP to a remote W2K8 Server outside of the office :- Your system administrator does not allow the user of saved credentials to log on to the remote computer XXX because its identity is not fully verified. Please enter new credentials A quick google search leads to some posts they all suggest I edit group policy, etc. I'm under the impression, that the common fix for this, is to follow those instructions -per Windows7 machine-. Ack :( Is there anyway I can do something via our office Active Directory .. which auto updates all Windows 7 clients in the office LAN?

  In my Fritzbox it states the following: IPv6-Adresse: 2a02:8070:600::14b6:c7******, Gültigkeit: 100465/86065s IPv6-Präfix: 2a02:8070:62c:3200::/56, Gültigkeit: 100464/86064s I am not able to connect to IPv6 Addresses from computers configured by the fritzbox, because they get an address with prefix 2a02:8070:62c:3200::/56 but somehow the fritzbox does not route those addresses. Is this because the IPv6-Address is not in the prefix range? • Question about Remote WAN IP on NetGear FVS336G VPN setup

  I wanted to be able to have a VPN connection to my home network so I purchased the FVS336G because the reviews said it was easy set up. I am sure it is for someone that knows what needs to be entered it is easy, but I am a little confused. Using the VPN wizard I choose VPN Client as the tunnel connection, enter key, etc... but then I get to the "What is the remote WAN's IP or Internet Name" and "What is the local WAN's IP address or Internet Name" I am lost. I am probably being really dumb, but I am not sure what I need to put in here. Is the remote WAN ip the ip from the outside world to my cable modem? Is the local ip the ip to my FVS336G? Any help would be appreciated.

• Encrypted passwords for better security on server

  Hi, I use wordpress and other CMS's and all these have plain text passwords in their config files e.g. in wp-config.php I wonder is this the normal way an administrator would protect security? I realise its possible to move the wp-config outside of the root web directory, but still if the server itself is compromised, its possible to find the wp-config file and the password inside, then the system is comprimised. Is there a way to encrypt all passwords on the system, so that in the web applications config files it uses the encrypted pass and not just plain text? Is there a sensible way of keeping plain-text passwords off the server? PS i use linux vps ubuntu servers Cheers Ke

• Looking for Inneroffice Access Tool, Workstation to Workstation

  This may be a simple question to answer, and I apologize if it's a duplicate. I looked through the suggestions and nothing jumped out at me as the right answer, so here goes: My office has several workstations, Macs and Windows boxes. We do have a firewall and a VPN solution, so getting in to the network from outside is easy. Likewise, we use GoToMeeting for demos and when we help our customers with their issues. But we have one workstation that has certain testing tools on it, and instead of walking across the office to this machine, I'd like to access it from my desk (and monitor it). I will need to open a command line and run commands. I could start a GoToMeeting and do it this way, but that seems overkill and clunky. Is there a simpler tool that allows pseudo-remote access within the same office/network for this kind of access?

• Missing "log on to" field in Windows 2008 password change dialog

  I have to setup an embedded standalone CIFS server outside of domain environment. I shall refer to the server as storage_gateway. The default password setting for the Administrator account is Password must be changed. Until Administrator password is changed other local accounts are disabled. While the server is on default password connecting to a share causes fails with NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE error. $ smbclient -L //storage_gateway -U Administrator session setup failed: NT_STATUS_PASSWORD_MUST_CHANGE I have a mixed Linux/Windows environment and prefer smbclient for diagnostics. To change the password in Windows 2003 Server I could press CTRL-ALT-DEL to get into the Windows Security window and change password for the remote server specifying the server name or ip address (xx.xx.xx.xx) in the system password change dialog. (the name root is just an example, I have edited the dialogs to translate them) However in Windows 2008 the corresponding dialog lacks the Log on to field. Is there a way to change a remote password in Windows 2008 Server/Windows 7?

• FTP timeout only the first time

  I'm using PureFTPd on MacOSX (Snow Leopard, not server version). When trying to access the FTP account from the outside via dyndns (e.g. using https://www.wormly.com/test_ftp_server) the connection always times out the FIRST time. When I try AGAIN in the next few seconds it works. What is this about? I have forwarded the ports to my apple router and tried disabling the OSX firewall as well. Thanks for any advice. Dennis

• Juniper Networks SRX240 as a office router?

  We're a small (7 person) fast growing startup who just got our new office and we're having a 100 Mbps line installed from Cogent. I'm not familiar with Juniper devices, however the equivalent Cisco appears to be rather expensive. Features we'd like: Offsite VPN access (PPTP or L2TP IPsec) - something Mac compatible IPv6 support NAT - ideally supporting multiple outside addresses mapped to VLANs DHCP DNS forwarding would be nice QoS to keep our SIP phones happy (managed through RingCentral) VLANs for guest/internal The device is going to be connected to a set of SIP phones as well as two Ruckus 7962s for wireless access. Eventually I'd like to connect it to a Juniper ESX switch as we grow. Would a Juniper SRX240 handle this ok?

• How to SSH to guest ubuntu OS in vmplayer4

  I have installed vmplayer4.0.4 on Windows7, and install ubuntu12.04 as Guest OS. Basically i have two problems: Default vmplayer use NAT for network access. I could ping the guest OS from the Host OS. But how could i access the Guest OS from outside the Host OS? If i change to Bridged Mode, sure the Guest Ubuntu OS could get DHCP ip in the same subnet as Host OS. But i could not ping the Guest OS from the Host OS, or vice versa, even if i disable the iptables firewall on Ubuntu Guest OS like following: iptables -F iptables -X iptables -t nat -F iptables -t nat -X iptables -t mangle -F iptables -t mangle -X iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT I could not figure it out, could anyone help on this issue? • Network wide rule to forwared IP address

  Hi, we have a virtual machine which hosts a web based bug tracker in our network which is reached internally via e.g. 192.168.1.5:9800. From the outside we made a port forwarding in our firewall so that the web site can be reached via e.g. 72.10.10.10:9800. Now that works fine but the problem is that we got different IP addresses to reach the same service depending if we are in the office or at home and when the service sends out an email the link doesn't always work :) So we are looking for a solution to fix it. One could be to make a rule in out firewall that all communication to 72.10.10.10:9800 is forwarded to 192.168.1.5:9800... If that's possible that is considering it's an IP address + a port. The reason we used a port is because we only got one static public IP address but multiple virtual web appliances.   Hello, I'm looking for the proper way to share the Coldfusion engine for all my Virtual Hosts. My question is, is there any way to share the same Coldfusion instance for every virtual host, mantaining the sites webroot outside of the cfusion folder? • What's the strategy to implement a "knowledge base" in my company.

  In my current work we think we can get benefit from having a knowledge base, so the next time someone has a question/problem etc, that base can be consulted and an answer will show up. Also, it will reduce the risk from having people leaving the company with the knowledge and we would have to start all over again. My question is, what strategy can we follow to implement/buy/get/build/etc this knowledge base? Are there software ready for this? Would it be better to have something build by ourselves ( we have some programmers ) This is an small company ( < 30 ) and the base should be accessible from outside the office ( when the employees are with the customer etc.) so I guess a webapp is in order.

• PXE boot very slow when PXE server is virtualbox

  As I read in questions here and on the Internet, PXE and Virtualbox don't seem to like each other too much. My problem is the following: I have a virtualized machine which hosts the DHCP and PXE server for 10 native clients. They are rebooted roughly every 10 mins and on each reboot, they need to boot a small linux (the initrd is ~4MB). Before, I had a native machine running and booting via PXE was very fast. Now, looking at the output of nload, I only get 500kbit/s whenever one machine is booting. The machines are connected via a GBit switch, so that can't be it. Also, when testing the connection speed to the outside, I have the full bandwidth available. Is VBox just unable to deal with large amounts of UDP packets? Can anyone point me in the right direction here?

Windows 2008 IIS 7 Plesk 9.x The problem started when Level 2 of my hosting company adjusted a FTP users to have certain permissions....apparently he did this outside of plesk and it has been nothing but permission headaches all around. Connections....uploading files, etc. now somethings gone wrong where plesk isnt even loading properly and IIS too... I need to see if someone can fix this remotely before I give the green light to format and reinstall server, IIS, Plesk and Domains! looking to pay a company to get this working ASAP - This is not requested as a free job so I need someone good and who can fix it without the huge hassle of formatting and such.   TL;DR: Can't use E while entering Unicode on NumPad — conflicting with Options menu OK, so I finally got entering Hex Unicode chars on my laptop using the NumPad working using this answer from this link But when I was trying to enter the Irony Mark (? U+2E2E), as soon as I hit the E, Options opened up like in old-style menus where pressing Alt + letter brought up the relevant menu. This annoying behaviour doesn't let me enter any Unicode code-point that has an E. This works fine outside Chrome. How can I stop this?

• How to prevent Outlook from receiving multiple copies of the same email

  This question might be asked already, but it's different from this one. My boss has Outlook 2003, when he synchronize his emails while connecting through the local server (using Exchange I guess) he gets his emails normally. Once he is outside (not connection to our LAN) he gets each email duplicated 3 or 4 times. Does anyone experienced this before? and how can we fix this? Please no links to FAQ pages. For info, we are using Kaspersky anti virus and Windows 2003 server, with windows XP clients. [Update] Actually we have a bunch of 5 or 6 email accounts on Outlook, and only one of them recieve duplicated copies of the same email, all the others are cool. Further more all these email are using the sae service, Gmail for example. [Update 2] I just found out that Outlook is configured to remove emails from the server already, also, some emails exceeds 5 copies! Thank you

• Google Apps email forwarding to a mailbox within the same domain

  It's either me or this feature doesn't work. I have a Google Apps account (non-paid) for example.com set up fine and dandy. Among other addresses, there are support@ and employee@. Now I want to set up Filters such that all mail sent to support@ should be forwarded to employee@. Note that this is not POP3/IMAP forwarding: I really need to do this with filters. The problem is as such: when an email arrives to support@ it is never ever forwarded to an address within the same domain, but is forwarded perfectly fine to some "outside" address (for instance, forwarding to my personal GMail account works flawlessly). How do I set up Filters to forward email propely?

• Getting triple-tap for Gyration Media Center remote working in Windows shell

  I have this Gyration remote which, out of the box, does not support triple-tap for text entry outside of Media Center; only numbers can be entered in the Windows shell. Gyration have a patch that supposedly allows this, but it hasn't worked for me. I'm not alone in this regard it seems though. I've seem some discussion on removing and reinstalling USB devices to get this working, but nothing I'd really trust not to screw something else up. Does anyone have any tips for getting this functionality working properly?

• Issue with Ivan Heckman's allSnap

  For the longest time I have used Ivan Heckman's allSnap program to better manage Windows on my pc by making them easily snap together, instead of overlapping. However on Windows 8 I cannot seem to get this to work. I suspect it has something to do with how Win8 boarders seem to have a transparent pixel around the outside of the window padding boarder, but overall I would love to get the snapping functionality back if it is at all possible. It's very hard trying to find information about this online as all I find are posts talking about snapping Metro apps to the side of the screen in Desktop Mode.
