• ipconfig /release not working, why?

  ipconfig /release is not working, why is that? here is a sequence where I put my cable in get an IP, try ipconfig /release and it tells me it can't release wireless, but there is no wireless connection. i'm just trying to release the wired one.   Since the old days ISA and now TMG have had several great features that I often want to deploy to my customers because of the enhanced functionality and security, but often the cost of an additinal server HW, Windows Server, and TMG license is too much to justify when compaired to a $300-500 appliance. Are there other gateway firewalls that can perform one or more of these application layer features: pre-auth incoming http traffic against AD/LDAP before sending packets to internal server (forms auth or basic creds popup)? read host headers of incoming http traffic (even on https) to a single public IP and route packets to different internal servers based on that host header?

• Why would e-mail from our own domain not be forwarded to gmail

  To solve a problem with spam on our server we tried to forward e-mail from our dedicated server's mailserver(matrix smtp service) to gmail, but while most e-mails got through e-mail from our own domain all went missing. They weren't in the inbox or spam or anywhere else. We've had to go back to using the old system, which means my boss gets a huge amount of spam. We have a windows 2003 server with iis 6 and the matrix smtp service installed. I've toyed with the idea of installing a mail proxy like ASSP but it looks pretty complicated. We're hosting 20 domains on the server as well as our own which has an online shop whose payment system depends on email. I can't start playing around with complicated solutions when it could have disastrous consequences and I don't know enough to implement them safely. So my question has two parts: Part One: Why can't we forward e-mails from people using the same domain. If our domain was foobar.com then [email protected] can't receive from [email protected], but he can receive from everyone else. Part Two: Is there a really simple server side solution to spam that would work with matrix? For instance popfile?

• Inbound connections using Internet Connection Sharing in Apple/Mac/Leopard

  I have a Mac mini which I'm using to give some other devices wireless access, by sharing it's Airport connection with the local ethernet, and that is plugged into a switch. All devices can get online no problem. (See how: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20041112101646643 and http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071223001432304 ) The issue is that I need to be able to connect in to these machines as well (at least, for the Slingbox to work). All the devices have 192.168.2.* addresses, and the rest of my local network is on 192.168.1.*. I tried setting a static route so that the 192.168.2.* addresses would use a gateway of 192.168.1.50 (my mac mini's address) but that didn't seem to help. Does anyone know if what I'm trying to do is possible? I admit I'm not certain what Internet Connection sharing is really doing under the hood... perhaps it just does basic nat, and doesn't do the type of routing I'm looking for. If so, anyone know if this is possible?

  I need to add static route on Mac OS. I found good description here Permanent Static Route Mac OS X 10.4.0 and followed the Roark Holz's (roarkh) solution. Now my problem: sometimes this solution works, sometimes does not. VPNC command request the input data from the user, IPSec gateway : IPSec ID: IPSec Secret: Username: Password: So, my requirement is, can i connect the VPN server through any single command?. • OpenVPN client on Amazon EC2

  I have an account with an OpenVPN service, and I'd like to get that running on my EC2 instance running Ubuntu 12.04. I have my config file in /etc/openvpn, and it connects fine when I run sudo openvpn --config matt.ovpn. However, I then lose connectivity to the EC2 machine, and I can't SSH back to it until I reboot. Previously I have done things like sudo ip rule add from IP_ADDRESS table 10 and then sudo ip route add default via GATEWAY_IP table 10, but that's not working on EC2. Any ideas? My private IP address right now is 10.209.29.XXX and my gateway is 10.209.29.1.

  I have 2 VMs in HyperV role: first is RRAS - it has 2 interfaces (both manually configured, no DHCP): 192.168.1.110 - "external" one, connected to the router 192.168.10.2 - that's internal interface which other VMs will be using as well also I added VPN connection to our main server - and it gets 192.168.2.136 IP address in 192.168.2.XXX network. And IP route is create on the server as well for this interface. second VM is called KITCHENER. It only has 1 interface 192.168.10.99 / 255.255.255.0, with default gateway set to RRAS server - 192.168.10.2 QUESTION: how can I ping "main server" - 192.168.2.1 - from the KITCHENER server when RRAS server is connected to VPN? please see screenshots with ipconfig /all, route print and ping 192.168.2.1 commands. What needs to be done to get this working? all servers are Windows 2008 R2 if that matters.

• Untangle VPN setup, how to see internal addresses?

  So Untangle is setup as the default gateway at 192.168.100.1/24, it is the authorative DHCP server issuing addresses from 192.168.100.100 to 192.168.100.200 and is successfully connected to the Internet. Untangle uses OpenVPN for remote access. Accessing the VPN gives me the address 192.168.40.5. However, I cannot ping any machines on the internal 192.168.100.x network remotely. Clearly, there is something basic that I am missing. What is it and how is it solved? Update: The VPN was not setup with the internal network. Since Untangle only allows editing the VPN setup once, the VPN had to be removed and reinstalled with the internal network exported. Now it works. The lesson is that the internal network must be setup before configuring the VPN.

  I got the Vundo virus that took out the mobo and hard drive on my Gateway GT5220. Is there a replacement that will work? I'm willing to keep XP. I want to fix it the cheapest way possible. The mobo is a NVIDIA GeForce 6150 AM2 microBTX with primary IDE and 4 SATA connections. I want to use a new SATA as my primary, but would like to be able to connect my old IDE drives to transfer my pictures from them to the new drive. I would appreciate any help. Thanks!

• Where would an S3 upload speed cap originate?

  I do a ton of uploading to S3 and am experiencing capped speeds and I can't quite figure out how to address it. The setup: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64, external HD, using a Java based upload tool called Jsh3ll and custom VBS scripts to kick the jobs off. Running one process at a time, I am always limited to about 4mbps. I have FiOS at 35/35mbps speeds, so it isn't an outright limit. AND, I can run parallel instances and can go all the way up to 35mbps, so I know the problem isn't gateway/nic/machine/amazon related. Running parallel instances works to a degree as a solution, but increases the complexity of my workflow greatly. Solving this would make my life dramatically easier. When I was first doing this I was playing around with a bunch of Windows TCP parameters and was able to briefly get unconstrained bandwidth, but it wasn't repeatable. Thoughts?

• Dark Windows 7 Screen

  My Gateway laptop -Windows 7- screen became too dark a few days ago after I finished installing Windows automatic update. I can see nothing unless I use a flashlight. Windows login screen is the only bright screen for few seconds. What should I do to resolve this issue? I checked power-saving/ Power Options settings and rebooting in Safe Mode. I tried to lower the refresh rate but it did not allow me. The laptop adapter type is ATI Radeon Xpress series. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. And the driver is up to-date. Any help would be appreciated.

• Have two exchange servers to communicate together

  We have Exchange Server 2007 using our domain ddd.com. We created an isolated network with a firewall/gateway and installed a DC and Exchange Server 2010 using a demo/test domain (ddd.loc). We opened all the needed ports in the firewall (10.10.2.88) to the Exchange Server 2010. In our main Domain Controller (10.10.2.3) we defined the domain ddd.loc with IP 10.10.2.88 (firewalls). We also we defined MX records to the same IP (10.10.2.88) We did that so when we send email from my email [email protected] it will go to the Exchange Server 2010. Anyways, all the pings test from to any servers are OK. But we are not able to send or receive emails. Between these Exchange Servers we can not send any email from the 2010 to any email in general (emails are pending). Also, in Exchange 2007 we are getting error #550 5.1.1 RESOLVER.ADR.RecipNotFound; not found ##

• Slowness on Exchange 2007 Server (network related we think)

  We are seeing some odd behavior out of our exchange 2007 server. I believe it is network related as during the slowness in response from the exchange server. During these times downloading files to server is fraught with connection resets and extreme slow download speeds that are not affecting other servers right on the same subnet with the same gateway and ISP. We have about 50 users at a time using Outlook 2003 from a terminal server not displaying any other signs of slowness, all network slowness is confirmed trying downloads on the exchange server itself. Checked for virus issues, there are none. Checked for hardware issues, none found I am noticing between 200-400 TCPv4 connections established I am seeing around 100k tcpv4(active) connections according to perfmon are these numbers odd? Has anyone run into anything similar? Our server has a gigbabit NIC linked to a gigabit switch using cat6 so I do not believe it is "physical". Thanks!

• Trying to get a new user up on VPN

  Caveat: I am not a sysadmin, so please forgive the n00bness of the query. We have a new user and I'm trying to get them up on VPN. We use pfsense as an IPSEC endpoint. This person is using Shrewsoft for the client. I had created an entry in pfsense for them and then edited a previous user's config file. Shrewsoft didn't import the config file very well and I had to hand edit the information. Now we are getting gateway errors. One thing I've noticed is that there is a different between the values of the preshared key stored on the firewall and the psk stored in the config file. I assume it has something to do with a hash, but I've no idea if that's the case and whether that might be what's causing the problem. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Tangentially, is there some software used to generate these config files?

• How do I create email addresses for all my users using my domain ([email protected])?

  My client wants to create email addresses for all their dotnetnuke users using their domain. The point is to keep the user's email addresses 'private' while still allowing communication through a public email address that they can control. It's not necessary to have a full webmail interface (although that would be nice). I'm thinking it would be enough just to forward any mail on and just act as a gateway. So if an email was sent to [email protected], it would be forwarded on to the email address associated with the dotnetnuke account with username 'rwain'. Is this possible to do in a shared hosting environment? Or do I need to create some custom mail server that does a conversion of the email address and forwards it?

• TS connection lost but not local

  I have an office that is connected to a shared db server and terminal services server, that other offices use as well, through a vpn tunnel. For some reason all workstations in the office will lose connectivity to the remote address but will remain connected to their local internet. I have checked both firewalls to ensure all settings match accordingly. They seem to go down at routine times every day and it doesn't last longer than a minute or two. Any ideas of what this may be?   I just installed Debian Wheezy on my homeserver. I want to assign 2 ip's to it on the same network interface, 1 static ip (eth0) and 1 dynamic ip (eth0:1). I know it doesn't make much sense but I need it to test something. I edited my /etc/network/interfaces to be like this: auto lo eth0 eth0:1 iface lo inet loopback iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.178.240 network 192.168.178.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.178.255 gateway 192.168.178.1 iface eth0:1 inet dhcp when I bring up eth0:1 (ifup eth0:1) I get the following error (eth0 works fine) Bind socket to interface: No such device Failed to bring up eth0:1. is it even possible to have a dynamic and static ip on the same network adapter?

• How to limit access to Exchange 2003 Mobile Actviesync server by user?

  So I was asked to set up an Exchange Activesync mobile gateway. That's done. It's a separat eExchange 2003 front-end server configured for SSL, and I've put an off-domain ISA server in front of it. Now I'm being asked to limit which users can connect to it. By default an Exchange front-end server allows any user who has a mail account to connect to the front -end server. So I'm looking at the permissions on the various IIS sites/apps on the server, but I know that it's easy to break Exchange Front-end server perms. So I've got the following in IIS: Exadmin Exchange EchWeb Microsoft-SErver-ActiveSync MobileAdmin OMA And a couple of others that I dont think are relevant. Can I change the permissions on one of these to restrict who can connect to Activesync? As a bonus: Can I do it in a way that does not affect ordinary browser based Exchange Access? I can successfully access the local services on the server when connected to the VPN, but I cannot go out of the LAN, i.e. I cannot just go to any server out on the internet. I guess this is come kind of routing issue that won't allow me to use the server as a gateway? I couldn't really find any articles or similar that could tell me how to set this up properly. I want to control the authentication/authorization in such a manner that authentication is done by gateway and any other access is routed through this ssh server to internal services without any further authentication/authorization requirements. So if a user A can log into server_1 for example. He can then ssh to server_2 without any other authentication and do what ever he is allowed to do on server_2 (like shut down mysql, upgrade it and restart it. They need to be shutdown and re-spawned. The requirement is to have a deployment script which has minimal human interaction as possible for both developers and operation.

• How to set which IP to use for a HTTP request?

  This is probably a silly question. I'm doing some http requests using wget from the command line, and I want those connections to be made through one specific IP of the 4 IPs my server has. Those http requests go to one specific range of IPs so I only want those to be routed differently. The 4 interfaces in my server are eth0, eth0:0, eth0:1, eth0:2. I tried with the following command: route add -net 192.164.10.0/24 dev eth0:0 But when I see the routing table it says: Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface 192.164.10.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 The interface is set to eth0 not eth0:0 as my command says. What am I doing wrong?

Is the same, when I have on the Mac OS or Windows. Can anybody please suggest me how to setup this network, what software I need to install in both physical machine and vm, what kind of network connectivity should be there between vmware guest and host machine? EDIT: I deliberately don't want to connect the VM with internet. The host will work more of a gateway of the VPN connection for the VM.

• Using a Dell PowerConnect to set up load balancing/redundancy, 1 switch 2 routres 2 private wan link

  Hi, We have different locations connected by two different WAN providers. Each site has a dell powerConnect 6224 and two cisco routers with the WAN connections (we don’t have access to router admin). The 6224 connects to each cisco LAN port and to our LAN backbone. We would like the 6224 provide the ip gateway address and load balance and support redundancy, if one of the routes fail. Is this possible?. We can't find any samples on doing this and we have tried with no success. Any help or link to documentation regarding this, will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, MarianoC
