  I purchased a server for the sole purpose of familiarizing myself with the CLI so I don't get royally screwed when I enter a real development environment. However, I have some questions. I've managed to SSH into my server, all is fine and dandy, installed LAMP too which went flawlessly. Now I'm wondering, the more changes I do, the more cluttered my server will become. Can I revert changes? I don't want to keep customizing things and installing things and just having a cluttered server overall. Where can I track changes to my system?

• How can I get Xubuntu's workspace switcher to show the proper sized desktop?

  I recently installed the Xubuntu desktop over my Ubuntu 12.04 installation, and have been customizing it to my liking. My laptop comes to class with me, and when it's not out of the room, it's usually connected to a second monitor. When I am not connected to the monitor, the workspace switcher shows that my windows are all inside about half of each workspace, but there's only one monitor connected. I'm looking for a way to get it to show workspaces that are reminiscent of this monitor's size and nothing more. Is there a way to fix that? I can attach a picture of the problem if necessary.

I know how to change the size of the mouse cursor in X by going to System Preferences Appearance and customizing the Pointer so that it is larger.   I've been in touch recently with Ann Maybury, who is creating a golf tournament roundrobin manager for senior citizens in Palm Desert, California. The application is created on the NetBeans Platform and looks as follows, very neat and professional: Ann has been working on wrapping up the application for distribution and needs to include the JRE, since end users of the application don't necessarily have the JRE installed when they install the application. Several blogs and articles are available for creating and customizing installers for NetBeans Platform applications, as well as for bundling the JRE and other resources, though there are some gaps and inccuracies in those documents.   I need an online shop with a custom interface (customizing items with Ajax, with a preview included). Writing it myself does not make too much sense (implementing all the payment options etc.), so I would like to use an existing online shop (OpenSource). I would like to build my own UI which, for example, tells the shop to add an item to its cart -- i.e. without using the online shop's native UI. More precisely, it should be an online gallery where the user can directly order an image if he likes it. The final checkout/payment page can be native again. Is there a shop system that supports this? Or is it still faster to write it on my own? Or are there better options?

What is Gnome3 and Gnome2 in relation to GTK3 or GTK2? Are they related at all? Is Gnome3 another version of Unity? What is Unity? What is compiz? To make this all VERY basic, the core question is: How is the Ubuntu GUI built? What are the elements from the bottom-up that make up the desktop environment? Trying to understand this better so I know what I need/want in order to have my desktop the way I would like it.   How do I increase the amount of wallpapers that appear on the menu for customizing the desktop with my backgrounds in 11.10? I added more images to the respective folder in /usr/share/background as root, but the list does not remain persistent. The images in 11:10 changes alone. So I want to add funds to enhance the environment. When I copy the images to the folder /usr/share/backgrounds the list is updated and increased. But only for the first time. Thereafter, the system ignores the other images, and the list of funds has become original as first. Any help?

  At Coscend, a cloud and communications software product company, we have built a Web portal-based collaboration platform that we like to host on five different Windows- and Linux-based servers in different hosting environments that run Web servers. Each of these Windows and Linux servers has a different host name and domain name (and IP address). Our team would appreciate your guidance on: (1) Is there a way to implement this Web portal-based platform on these Linux and Windows servers without customizing the host name, domain name and IP address for each individual instance? (2) Is there a way to create some variables using JavaScript for host name and domain name and call them from the different implementations? If a reference to the host/domain names occurs on hundreds of our pages, the variables or objects would replace that.
