  I have a computer which crashes after about 5-45 seconds of operation. It can run memtest86+, and it doesn't display any errors, but it doesn't prevent it from crashing within the time frame listed above. The heat sink appears to be installed correctly, and I don't think it is related to overheating. The motherboard is connected to the ram and a monitor, nothing else is installed. The processor is an atom 330, running memtest86+ 4.0. Any insight into if the ram is bad or if it is the motherboard/psu/cpu? Thanks!

• Only some motherboards can support faster RAM?

  This is a question relating to one of my builds. Here are the specs: ECS P4VXASD2+ V5.0 motherboard Intel P4 Northwood 2.8 GHz (533 MHz FSB, 512 KB L2) 2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM Maxtor 300GB IDE HDD 16 MB NVIDIA TNT2 Pro AGP OKIA 300W ATX PSU Gigabyte 52x CD-ROM The issue right now is that I'm trying to install Windows XP from the CD drive but the computer randomly restarts partway through installation. My other build was BSODing due to RAM latency errors. This ECS board manual states that memory modules "up to 333 MHz" (i.e. PC2700) is supported. However, I am running PC3200 modules, which is clearly faster than PC2700. Would this be causing the computer from randomly restarting? EDIT 1: I also wanted to mention that my Emachines T2482 is actually running 2x 512MB PC3200 DDR RAM when it should only be supporting PC1600 and PC2100 DDR RAM. Yet there are no issues with it.

  What is it? And what causes it? Is it only for uncorrectable DIMM Errors(Troubleshooting DIMM errors)? When an UCE occurs, the memory controller causes an immediate reboot of the system. During reboot, the BIOS checks the Machine Check registers and determines that the previous reboot was due to an UCE, then reports this in POST after the memtest stage: A Hypertransport Sync Flood occurred on last boot 3 BIOS reports this event in the service processor’s system event log (SEL) as shown in the sample IPMItool output There are what seems to be some suggested answers to include Bad Caps Bios verisons (happens in one version not the other) Graphics card issues Lack of power to the CPU The list of possible generators seems to target everything but the computer case. • Why would a machine ruin three "power supply"s?

  A client of mine has an XP era eMachines. The power supply has died and been replaced 3 times. I've discharged the motherboard and checked the surge protector. In the middle of a scan with ComboFix, the machine died. It powers on and hangs before the BIOS and shows a solid yellow light. I believe the model # is T5062 or something like that. Aside from a bad outlet, what would cause the PSU to die a few times?

  Possible Duplicate: Power Supply Capacity Formula How can I check if my system needs more PSU power? I'm not sure if it's OK or not to ask a hardware question here. If not please let me know a good place but I've always got good info here so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm custom building a new workstation for coding (Linux/Eclipse). How do I determine how much power the power supply needs? I'm building a mini ITX system on a budget and so I need to get as small as possible that is sufficient. I'll have a mini itx mobo with on board wifi and bluetooth, 8 GB RAM, an Intel i3 3.1 Ghz processor, 64 GB SSD and a slim optical drive. In the future I might add a descrete GPU, 16 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD. What is the minimum power I need and how do I calculate that?

• Using old RAID configured disk after new disk has been used in the controller

  I have Dell Poweredge T100 server with Dell SAS 6 and two hard disk on RAID 1. Last week the server died including one RAID 1 hard disk. We sent the server for repair and the problem with PSU was fixed. But the repair guys also checked the RAID controller by configuring new RAID with their test hard disk. Now if I install one working RAID 1 disk and one new disk, will the RAID controller let me continue my old RAID 1 and resync the new disk and continue? What I fear is the RAID controller will want the test hard from repair guys. Thus I have to re configure RAID 1 forcing me to wipe the working disc. If so, I've to backup the working disc, reconfigure RAID 1 and reinstall? Or is there better way? Note: I'm using DELL SAS confiugratio utility to manage RAID. (Press CTRL+C after BIOS)

  I've been looking at this as the same approach as building a desktop computer from scratch but I've never really come across the core things. Can I buy a laptop "case"? Can I buy a motherboard/PSU to fit that case? Can I choose a CPU fan? What are my battery options? Obviously taking into consideration the case. Why isn't this as easy as putting together a desktop computer? Shouldn't there be standards such as ATX? If they exist, what are they?

• Looking for Mini itx capable of running Photoshop + Illustrator (cs4 or higher)

  Ok, so I want to build a small pc for my gf that she can take with her instead of the crappy laptop that she has. Overall I think the complete system should not weight more than 10 lbs. The requirements are to run at least 4 applications simultaneously, and be able to switch between them with no problems: Photoshop Illustrator Word editor Browser Should be able to handle 1920x1200 resolution. I am currently looking at LGA775 socket as I can just transfer my desktop cpu Q6600 to it. Currently deciding between DQ45EK and DG41TX, but any other suggestions are welcome. So I am thinking something along the lines of: MINI-BOX M350 Case with 90 watt psu Q6600 cpu (my desktop cpu) 2x2GB kingston ram (or similar) Video? Need external or built-in G45 on DQ45EK will do? My primary concern is whether the 90WATT is sufficient of the Q6600? Thanks

• Computer sending data while turned of

  I have a some what strange problem (which could have and easy and obvious solution for all I know). My problem is that when I've booted ubuntu (now 10.4 but same problem with 9.10) and turns it off it starts sending a HUGE amount of data via the ethernet cable, so much in fact that my router can't handle it and stops responding. As far as I can tell the computer is completely turned off with no fans spinning. I can add that if I boot windows I do not have this problem, just when exiting ubuntu. There are two "fixes" for my problem: Pull the ethernet cable until the next boot Turn off power to the PSU and wait for the capacitors to unload Is there anyone who knows what could be going on? I'd be happy to post some logs or conf-files. Currently I'm using the ethernet port on my motherboard which is a Asus P6T Deluxe V2 with an updated version of the BIOS (maybe not the latest but since it only happens when I've been in ubuntu I don't wanna mess with the BIOS too much). • I have static noise in my speakers and headset

  I have been having a problem with my computer where I am constantly getting static from the point I turn on my PC. I have changed Towers, Hard Drives, added and removed a Sound Blaster Xtreme Sound Card, used 3 different Headsets, and 2 sets of speakers. Lately I have noticed random dips in my frame rates when playing games. Is there any possibility that the graphics card could be causing the static with the possibility of it needing to go in for repairs? • Options for connecting an external disk to an old laptop

  I've tried connecting a 2.5" external drive to an old laptop which has only USB 1. The LED on the disk lights up, but the disk doesn't seem to spin up. Since the same disk works fine on a newer laptop my guess is that the old one doesn't output enough power on the USB port. Besides looking for an external drive with its own PSU, what would you suggest? Will one of those USB cables with two connectors work? What about a powered USB hub?

• PC is randomly shutting off

  I have a PC which is randomly shutting off (the hard way, like someone pulled the plug). It's no heat problem, because this can happen after 2 minutes of operation or after 4 hours and I checked the temperature. It's also no problem of the operation system, because it will also do that while in BIOS. If it happens once, you can be sure that it will happen within the next hour another two or three times, and then it works again for over a week or even longer. Possible causes I've thought about so far are: Voltage Fluctuation Loose contact (already replugged all cables within the PC, no luck) Faulty PSU Maybe someone has more ideas to this? P.s.: I don't have the hardware specs with me right now, I'll post them as soon as I get them.

• Serious voltage and temperature problems

  My computer has been acting up when I play games so I wanted to look into why. Issue 1: GPU Temp According to afterburner and speedfan my 8800GTX idles at 90 degrees and then when playing games shoots up to over 110C which is when my graphics basically starts to give rendering issues. Issue 2: CPU Temp Speedfan is saying my CPU temp is 83C idle but when I look at core temp it says core0 is at 35C and core1 is at 33C. Issue 3: Voltages This is what speedfan is saying for my voltages: Vcore1: 1.01V Vcore2: 1.90V +3.3V: 3.31V +5V: 4.95V +12V: 0.51V -12V: -16.80V -5V: -8.43V +5V 5.13V Vbat: 3.25V Vcore: 3.00V +3.3V: 3.20V These voltages, for lack of a better word, look f*cked. With all this happening, the computer runs ok under normal use. Is the software giving out incorrect readouts or instead should I immediately move the computer into another room before it explodes? P.s I would like to add this is a stock system. EVGA 8800GTX, E6850 CPU, 800W PSU

• Laptop Locking Up

  I am having a very weird issue on a Lenovo W510 laptop. It will lock up randomly. I have had it lock up during post, during the boot-up of Linux, during login, and after the login. The following are tests that I have performed on the laptop. I ran memtest I took out the extra memory module. I swapped the HDD with another HDD that had Windows 7 on it. (It BSOD'd, and before anyone could possibly read the error line, it restarts.) I tried taking the battery out and booting with only the Power cord. The only other options I can think of the problem being are the motherboard or the PSU. If anyone has any advice, I appreciate it. If not, the HP guy will be here in a few days to fix it. I would just love to call them up and tell them that the service is no longer needed.

• Motherboard warning lights when plugging in a display port cord to graphics card?

  Earlier today, my computer spontaneously shut itself off and refused to turn back on. I tested my PSU and it's operating fine. I unplugged everything and let it sit for a while and it started to make a high pitched coil whine/hiss. When I came back an hour later and plugged in only the power cord, it turned on without any issues. After some troubleshooting, I noticed my motherboard (Intel D975XBX2) has a red CPU led and VR led that come on whenever I plug my monitor into my graphics card via display port. DVI does not cause a similar issue. I was running three monitors off the card, so I need both DVI ports and the display port working. Is it likely my graphics card needs to be replaced, or should I be looking elsewhere to resolve this issue?

• Bios wont post unless I restart power supply.

  I have an annoying problem with a computer. The BIOS wont post after it has been turned off and started again unless I turn the switch off/on on the power supply. The fans, cdrom hdd and everything starts running but the bios never beeps and the monitor stays black. I HAVE TRIED: reinstalling windows xp, flashed bios to latest, cmos clear, new power supply, other hdd, new memory sticks, graphics card. I also removed the motherboard from the computer case and laid it on a cardboard box and only connected the PSU, RAM and CPU. Other than this the computer works great but its annoying having to off/on the power supply switch before turning it on after its been off. My guess is that the motherboard is faulty but I would just like to hear what you guys think. Sorry for my english / Remy

All my other machines will post within 1-2 seconds, but this one takes a particularly long time. I've read suggestions from a Google search to swap the CMOS battery, check BIOS settings, and double check CMOS jumper. Still after follow those, it takes a while to POST. What else could be causing a long delay before POSTing?

• How does one go about fixing a pixelation issue?

  I've been having a lot of trouble with pixelation and also in-game display driver crashes. At first I thought the problem may have been my graphics card (Sapphire 5750) but I have RMA'd it three times and I'm still having trouble. So what I think it might be is my PSU, its 650Watt but its made by Azza so it was cheap and not made by a necessarily good company. Or maybe it could be the CPU (AMD Phenom Black Edition 3.4Ghz) It runs hot (60C) but it passes Everest's test. Someone told me it could be the memory (8GB DDR3) but I don't really see how RAM has anything to do with my problem. So what are some of you suggestions? • further troubleshooting on a p8z77 motherboard

  I just bought a brand now asus p8z77 motherboard with a intel 3770. Its currently not booting - the system powers up for half a second and then powers down, and the CPU error light shines. I've tried switching ram between slots, switching PSUs, updating the bios (which can be done sans processor or ram on this model). Power: The 8 pin power connector is definitely in place correctly, and I've tried swapping PSUs between a new seasonic m12, and a known good cheapie PSU Ram: Ram is in the recommended slot for single stick operation, and tried swapping between the two sticks of DDR3 I have. Processor: Its installed correctly as far as I can tell, no obvious bent pins on the motherboard. At this point I'm guessing I'll need to RMA something. Are there any 'definitive' tests I can try, short of swapping CPU and motherboard that would let me know it is the CPU? Can I actually trust the error light on the motherboard?

Most times i watch movie, some times when i play a game, even when i browse internet. My spec are as follow: MB ASUS M4A78-E CPU Phenom II 940 Sapphire Radeon hd4850 Vapor-X RAM OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 kit 2x2GB PSU CM Real Power M520W CASE CM Centurion 590 Temps of MB, CPU and 4850 are in normal range. MB is hooter, around 60-70°C under load, Radeon 60-65°C under load (playing game for couple hours). CPU dos not past 50-55°C. So i think its not a cooling problem, CM case is pretty good, and have a lots of fans. I try with this memmory: TWIN2X4096-6400C5DHX same problem.

• Mouse Hang with voltage fluctuation

  I bought a new assembled PC about a month ago, but for the past 7 or 8 days I found my mouse cursor hangs every time there is a voltage fluctuation on my UPS (I guess it as when sound comes from ups then mouse hang for 2 or 3 sec. and them it goes normal again). My PC also seems to shut down while I'm working and it refuses to boot again - I end up needing to switch off my UPS and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds. It will then boot as per normal. Could the trouble be with my PSU? Am I potentially damaging my computer by pressing and holding the power button? • Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) Virtual Machine?

  I have been looking into this for a while and have attempted quite a few "solutions" (hackintosh boot images, universal unlockers, etc) before I gave in and asked for help. I know this is extremely difficult to accomplish, especially with an AMD CPU, but it has been done and it can't hurt to ask. Question Does anyone know of any way to actually get Mac OS X Lion (10.7.3) to boot in VMware Workstation 8.0.2? I know that Mac OS X is heavily dependant on hardware configuration, so I will post my PC's hardware below, if it helps. As far as I know it's only reliant on the CPU, but I will post it all just in case. • NVIDIA Driver Crashing on Custom-Built Windows 7 PC

  I've got a custom-built PC with these specs: Fractal Design Define R3 ASUS P8Z77-V motherboard Intel Core i7-2700k with Thermalright HR-02 Macho Cooler NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 with Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo II Cooler Crucial M4 128 GB SSD 1 TB Hitachi HDD G.SKILL Ares Series 2x8 GB RAM (x2) SeaSonic 520W PSU Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 (x64) NVIDIA driver version 301.42 Upon building the PC, I overclocked the CPU (but never the GPU), and there were no problems for 1-2 months. Then I started getting crashes with this error when doing anything that's computationally or graphically intensive: I un-overclocked the CPU, but that hasn't fixed anything. This is what the inside of my case looks like: I'd appreciate any guidance on resolving this problem. I did get some of the thermal paste on the graphics card when installing the aftermarket cooler, but there were no issues for a month or two. Update I did a clean install and the issue persisted - looks like it's a hardware issue. I will try removing/cleaning/reseating all the parts.
