  • Edit Contact code worked in 1.6 but doesn't work on Droid 2.1?

    - by user225405
Hi All, I had some fairly simple code in my app to invoke Edit Contact activity on a known good contact index that worked in Android 1.6 but is broken for me now in Android 2.1 on the Droid. I built a sample activity/app 'EdCon' to show this: package com.jbh; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.Intent; import android.net.Uri; import android.os.Bundle; public class EdCon extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // Build an intent to edit a known good contact index Intent i; i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_EDIT); i.setData(Uri.parse("content://contacts/people/10")); startActivity(i); } } When I run this on my G1 running 1.6 it works as expected i.e. brings up the Edit Contact screen for the known index and then I can hit BACK to return to "Hello World, EdCon". When I run this on the Droid under 2.1 I get the following: 05-07 15:35:57.787: INFO/ActivityManager(1013): Starting activity: Intent { act=android.intent.action.MAIN • Java - How to detect that the internet connection has got disconnected through a java desktop applic

    - by Yatendra Goel
I am developing a Java Desktop Application that access internet. It is a multi-threaded application, each thread do the same work (means each thread is an instance of same Thread class). Now, as all the threads need internet connection to be active, there should be some mechanism that detects whether an internet connection is active or not. Q1. How to detect whether the internet connection is active or not? Q2. Where to implement this internet-status-check-mechanism code? Should I start a separate thread for checking internet status regularly and notifies all the threads when the status changes from one state to another? Or should I let each thread check for the internet-status itself? Q3. This issue should be a very common issue as every application accessing an internet should deal with this problem. So how other developers usually deal with this problem? Q4. If you could give me a reference to a good demo application that addresses this issue then it would greatly help me.

  • Disabling JComboBox and retaining original item list

    - by n002213f
My action listener on a JComboBox invokes a thread. I would like the component to be disabled until the thread completes. I have tried calling seEnabled(false) when the thread start and setEnabled(true) when it completes. Unfortunately setEnabled(false) clears the combo box list as well. Is there a way of disabling the component but retain the original list?

  • What is application and process?

    - by Lu Lu
An application consists of one or more processes. A process, in the simplest terms, is an executing program. One or more threads run in the context of the process. A thread is the basic unit to which the operating system allocates processor time. A thread can execute any part of the process code, including parts currently being executed by another thread. Source: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms684841%28VS.85%29.aspx I understand about thread, but I can't distinguish between application & process. What is application? What is process? How do an application have more than 1 process? And please give me an example in C#. Thanks.

  • Understanding Java Wait and Notify methods

    - by Maddy
Hello all: I have a following program: import java.util.concurrent.ExecutorService; import java.util.concurrent.Executors; public class SimpleWaitNotify implements Runnable { final static Object obj = new Object(); static boolean value = true; public synchronized void flag() { System.out.println("Before Wait"); try { obj.wait(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { System.out.println("Thread interrupted"); } System.out.println("After Being Notified"); } public synchronized void unflag() { System.out.println("Before Notify All"); obj.notifyAll(); System.out.println("After Notify All Method Call"); } public void run() { if (value) { flag(); } else { unflag(); } } public static void main(String[] args) throws InterruptedException { ExecutorService pool = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(4); SimpleWaitNotify sWait = new SimpleWaitNotify(); pool.execute(sWait); SimpleWaitNotify.value = false; SimpleWaitNotify sNotify = new SimpleWaitNotify(); pool.execute(sNotify); pool.shutdown(); } } When I wait on obj, I get the following exception Exception in thread "pool-1-thread-1" java.lang.IllegalMonitorStateException: current thread not owner for each of the two threads. But if I use SimpleWaitNotify's monitor then the program execution is suspended. In other words, I think it suspends current execution thread and in turn the executor. Any help towards understanding what's going on would be duly appreciated. This is an area1 where the theory and javadoc seem straightforward, and since there aren't many examples, conceptually left a big gap in me.

  • How do I pass a reference type to Control.Invoke / display a form centered on the main form

    - by Rubio
I'm on a thread other than the UI thread and need to display a modal form that's centered on the application's main form. What I usually do is use the width and height of the main form and the modal form to calculate the location, then use the PointToScreen method of the main form to get the location of the modal form. Since I'm on another thread I need to use Control.Invoke to call this method. I just can't figure out how to pass a parameter of type Point to Control.Invoke (params object[]). Value types and String works fine. Or, if someone can find a better way to display a form centered on the main form regardless of thread, that would be great. MessageBox seems to be able to do this (although not modally).

  • WPF calls not working during long method processing

    - by Colin Rouse
Hi, The following method does not apply the wpf changes (background = red) until the 2nd method (DoWork) exits: private void change() { Background = Brushes.Red; Dispatcher.BeginInvoke((Action) DoWork); } DoWork() takes several seconds to run and I don't really want to put it into a thread, as this code will be used in several places and will probably interact will the Dispatcher thread at various intervals. I've tried calling the Invalidate...() methods, but to no avail. The BeginInvoke() was added to see if the delay would allow the background change to be applied before the logic was called. Typically, the logic would be part of this method. Btw, most of the logic is performed on a different thread and shouldn't block the Dispatcher thread?! Can someone please help? Thanks

  • Windows threading: _beginthread vs _beginthreadex vs CreateThread C++

    - by Lirik
What's a better way to start a thread? I'm trying to determine what are the advantages/disadvantages of _beginthread, _beginthreadex and CreateThread. All of these functions return a thread handle to a newly created thread, I already know that CreateThread provides a little extra information when an error occurs (it can be checked by calling GetLastError)... but what are some things I should consider when I'm using these functions? I'm working with a windows application, so cross-platform computability is already out of the question. I have gone through the msdn documentation and I just can't understand, for example, why anybody would decide to use _beginthread instead of CreateThread or vice versa. Cheers! Update: OK, thanks for all the info, I've also read in a couple of places that I can't call WaitForSingleObject() if I used _beginthread(), but if I call _endthread() in the thread shouldn't that work? What's the deal there?

  • Multithreading Errors in C#

    - by Adam
Hi. I am trying to update a text box. I thought my threading code would fix the problem, but it does not. Can anyone help with this? new Thread((ThreadStart)delegate { txtCapacitance.Text = Math.Round(capacitance, 3).ToString(); }).Start(); Gives the following error: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'txtCapacitance' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on. Note that all this is being started by a dataReceived function which is called whenever USB data is received.

  • Message queue proxy in Python + Twisted

    - by gasper_k
Hi, I want to implement a lightweight Message Queue proxy. It's job is to receive messages from a web application (PHP) and send them to the Message Queue server asynchronously. The reason for this proxy is that the MQ isn't always avaliable and is sometimes lagging, or even down, but I want to make sure the messages are delivered, and the web application returns immediately. So, PHP would send the message to the MQ proxy running on the same host. That proxy would save the messages to SQLite for persistence, in case of crashes. At the same time it would send the messages from SQLite to the MQ in batches when the connection is available, and delete them from SQLite. Now, the way I understand, there are these components in this service: message listener (listens to the messages from PHP and writes them to a Incoming Queue) DB flusher (reads messages from the Incoming Queue and saves them to a database; due to SQLite single-threadedness) MQ connection handler (keeps the connection to the MQ server online by reconnecting) message sender (collects messages from SQlite db and sends them to the MQ server, then removes them from db) I was thinking of using Twisted for #1 (TCPServer), but I'm having problem with integrating it with other points, which aren't event-driven. Intuition tells me that each of these points should be running in a separate thread, because all are IO-bound and independent of each other, but I could easily put them in a single thread. Even though, I couldn't find any good and clear (to me) examples on how to implement this worker thread aside of Twisted's main loop. The example I've started with is the chatserver.py, which uses service.Application and internet.TCPServer objects. If I start my own thread prior to creating TCPServer service, it runs a few times, but the it stops and never runs again. I'm not sure, why this is happening, but it's probably because I don't use threads with Twisted correctly. Any suggestions on how to implement a separate worker thread and keep Twisted? Do you have any alternative architectures in mind?

  • General SQL Server query performance

    - by Kiril
Hey guys, This might be stupid, but databases are not my thing :) Imagine the following scenario. A user can create a post and other users can reply to his post, thus forming a thread. Everything goes in a single table called Posts. All the posts that form a thread are connected with each other through a generated key called ThreadID. This means that when user #1 creates a new post, a ThreadID is generated, and every reply that follows has a ThreadID pointing to the initial post (created by user #1). What I am trying to do is limit the number of replies to let's say 20 per thread. I'm wondering which of the approaches bellow is faster: 1 I add a new integer column (e.x. Counter) to Posts. After a user replies to the initial post, I update the initial post's Counter field. If it reaches 20 I lock the thread. 2 After a user replies to the initial post, I select all the posts that have the same ThreadID. If this collection has more than 20 items, I lock the thread. For further information: I am using SQL Server database and Linq-to-SQL entity model. I'd be glad if you tell me your opinions on the two approaches or share another, faster approach. Best Regards, Kiril

  • Can Ruby Fibers be Concurrent?

    - by Jesse J
I'm trying to get some speed up in my program and I've been told that Ruby Fibers are faster than threads and can take advantage of multiple cores. I've looked around, but I just can't find how to actually run different fibers concurrently. With threads you can dO this: threads = [] threads << Thread.new {Do something} threads << Thread.new {Do something} threads.each {|thread| thread.join} I can't see how to do something like this with fibers. All I can find is yield and resume which seems like just a bunch of starting and stopping between the fibers. Is there a way to do true concurrency with fibers?

  • Java Process.waitFor() and IO streams

    - by lynks
I have the following code; String[] cmd = { "bash", "-c", "~/path/to/script.sh" }; Process p = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(cmd); PipeThread a = new PipeThread(p.getInputStream(), System.out); PipeThread b = new PipeThread(p.getErrorStream(), System.err); p.waitFor(); a.die(); b.die(); The PipeThread class is quite simple so I will include it in full; public class PipeThread implements Runnable { private BufferedInputStream in; private BufferedOutputStream out; public Thread thread; private boolean die = false; public PipeThread(InputStream i, OutputStream o) { in = new BufferedInputStream(i); out = new BufferedOutputStream(o); thread = new Thread(this); thread.start(); } public void die() { die = true; } public void run() { try { byte[] b = new byte[1024]; while(!die) { int x = in.read(b, 0, 1024); if(x > 0) out.write(b, 0, x); else die(); out.flush(); } } catch(Exception e) { e.printStackTrace(); } try { in.close(); out.close(); } catch(Exception e) { } } } My problem is this; p.waitFor() blocks endlessly, even after the subprocess has terminated. If I do not create the pair of PipeThread instances, then p.waitFor() works perfectly. What is it about the piping of io streams that is causing p.waitFor() to continue blocking? I'm confused as I thought the IO streams would be passive, unable to keep a process alive, or to make Java think the process is still alive.

  • xcode loading the images in background process, it leads to crash the application when i scroll the

    - by Srinivas G
Hi, I have developed an application which has retrieved the information from remote location...so i put those in UITableView's Section. In response, i will be getting images also..for this i put the background process(only for images..because the app will take more time to retrieve images than text based information..).It is working fine...But if i scroll the tableview while loading the images..it is going to be crashed.... crash Log: Tried to obtain the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. This may be a result of calling to UIKit from a secondary thread. Crashing now... could anyone has the solution for this..please let me know..how to resolve this crash...Even i used NSThread class for this.. but i didn't get the solution... Thanks, Srinivas G

  • use .net webbrowser control by multithread, throw "EXCEPTION code=ACCESS_VIOLATION"

    i want to make a console program to monitor a webpage's htmlsourcecode, because some of the page content are created by some javescript, so i have to use webbrowser control. like : View Generated Source (After AJAX/JavaScript) in C# my code is below: public class WebProcessor { public string GeneratedSource; public string URL ; public DateTime beginTime; public DateTime endTime; public object GetGeneratedHTML(object url) { URL = url.ToString(); try { Thread[] t = new Thread[10]; for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) { t[i] = new Thread(new ThreadStart(WebBrowserThread)); t[i].SetApartmentState(ApartmentState.STA); t[i].Name = "Thread" + i.ToString(); t[i].Start(); //t[i].Join(); } } catch (Exception ex) { Console.WriteLine(ex.ToString()); } return GeneratedSource; } private void WebBrowserThread() { WebBrowser wb = new WebBrowser(); wb.ScriptErrorsSuppressed = true; wb.DocumentCompleted += new WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventHandler( wb_DocumentCompleted); while(true ) { beginTime = DateTime.Now; wb.Navigate(URL); while (wb.ReadyState != WebBrowserReadyState.Complete) { Thread.Sleep(new Random().Next(10,100)); Application.DoEvents(); } } //wb.Dispose(); } private void wb_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e) { WebBrowser wb = (WebBrowser)sender; if (wb.ReadyState == WebBrowserReadyState.Complete) { GeneratedSource= wb.Document.Body.InnerHtml; endTime = DateTime.Now; Console.WriteLine("WebBrowser " + (endTime-beginTime).Milliseconds + Thread.CurrentThread.Name + wb.Document.Title); } } } when it run, after a while (20-50 times), it throw the exception like this EXCEPTION code=ACCESS_VIOLATION (null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(nul l)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(n ull)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null) (null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(null)(nul l)(null)BACKTRACE: 33 stack frames: #0 0x083dba8db0 at MatchExactGetIDsOfNames in mshtml.dll #1 0x0879f9b837 at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #2 0x0879f9b8e3 at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #3 0x0879f9b93a at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #4 0x0879f9b9e0 at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #5 0x0879f9b677 at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #6 0x0879f9b785 at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #7 0x0879f192a8 at InstallCustomModule in mscorwks.dll #8 0x0879f19444 at InstallCustomModule in mscorwks.dll #9 0x0879f194ab at InstallCustomModule in mscorwks.dll #10 0x0879fa6491 at StrongNameErrorInfo in mscorwks.dll #11 0x0879f44bcf at DllGetClassObjectInternal in mscorwks.dll #12 0x089bbafa at in #13 0x087b18cc10 at in System.Windows.Forms.ni.dll #14 0x087b91f4c1 at in System.Windows.Forms.ni.dll #15 0x08d00669 at in #16 0x08792d6e46 at in mscorlib.ni.dll #17 0x08792e02cf at in mscorlib.ni.dll #18 0x08792d6dc4 at in mscorlib.ni.dll #19 0x0879e71b4c at in mscorwks.dll #20 0x0879e896ce at in mscorwks.dll #21 0x0879e96ea9 at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #22 0x0879e96edc at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #23 0x0879e96efa at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #24 0x0879f88357 at GetPrivateContextsPerfCounters in mscorwks.dll #25 0x0879e9cc8f at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #26 0x0879e9cc2b at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #27 0x0879e9cb51 at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #28 0x0879e9ccdd at CoUninitializeEE in mscorwks.dll #29 0x0879f88128 at GetPrivateContextsPerfCounters in mscorwks.dll #30 0x0879f88202 at GetPrivateContextsPerfCounters in mscorwks.dll #31 0x0879f0e255 at InstallCustomModule in mscorwks.dll #32 0x087c80b729 at GetModuleFileNameA in KERNEL32.dll i have try lots of methods to solve the problem, finally, i found that if i thread sleep more millseconds, it will run for a longer time, but the exception is still throw. hope somebody give me the answer of how to slove ... thanks very much !!!

  • C# Accepting sockets in async fasion - best practices

    - by psulek
What is the best way to accept new sockets in async way. First way: while (!abort && listener.Server.IsBound) { acceptedSocketEvent.Reset(); listener.BeginAcceptSocket(AcceptConnection, null); bool signaled = false; do { signaled = acceptedSocketEvent.WaitOne(1000, false); } while (!signaled && !abort && listener.Server.IsBound); } where AcceptConnection should be: private void AcceptConnection(IAsyncResult ar) { // Signal the main thread to continue. acceptedSocketEvent.Set(); Socket socket = listener.EndAcceptSocket(ar); // continue to receive data and so on... .... } or Second way: listener.BeginAcceptSocket(AcceptConnection, null); while (!abort && listener.Server.IsBound) { Thread.Sleep(500); } and AcceptConnection will be: private void AcceptConnection(IAsyncResult ar) { Socket socket = listener.EndAcceptSocket(ar); // begin accepting next socket listener.BeginAcceptSocket(AcceptConnection, null); // continue to receive data and so on... .... } What is your prefered way and why?

  • ~1 second TcpListener Pending()/AcceptTcpClient() lag

    - by cpf
Probably just watch this video: http://screencast.com/t/OWE1OWVkO As you see, the delay between a connection being initiated (via telnet or firefox) and my program first getting word of it. Here's the code that waits for the connection public IDLServer(System.Net.IPAddress addr, int port) { Listener = new TcpListener(addr, port); Listener.Server.NoDelay = true;//I added this just for testing, it has no impact Listener.Start(); ConnectionThread = new Thread(ConnectionListener); ConnectionThread.Start(); } private void ConnectionListener() { while (Running) { while (Listener.Pending() == false) { System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1); }//this is the part with the lag Console.WriteLine("Client available");//from this point on everything runs perfectly fast TcpClient cl = Listener.AcceptTcpClient(); Thread proct = new Thread(new ParameterizedThreadStart(InstanceHandler)); proct.Start(cl); } } (I was having some trouble getting the code into a code block) I've tried a couple different things, could it be I'm using TcpClient/Listener instead of a raw Socket object? It's not a mandatory TCP overhead I know, and I've tried running everything in the same thread, etc.

  • Atomic swap in GNU C++

    - by Steve
I want to verify that my understanding is correct. This kind of thing is tricky so I'm almost sure I am missing something. I have a program consisting of a real-time thread and a non-real-time thread. I want the non-RT thread to be able to swap a pointer to memory that is used by the RT thread. From the docs, my understanding is that this can be accomplished in g++ with: // global Data *rt_data; Data *swap_data(Data *new_data) { #ifdef __GNUC__ // Atomic pointer swap. Data *old_d = __sync_lock_test_and_set(&rt_data, new_data); #else // Non-atomic, cross your fingers. Data *old_d = rt_data; rt_data = new_data; #endif return old_d; } This is the only place in the program (other than initial setup) where rt_data is modified. When rt_data is used in the real-time context, it is copied to a local pointer. For old_d, later on when it is sure that the old memory is not used, it will be freed in the non-RT thread. Is this correct? Do I need volatile anywhere? Are there other synchronization primitives I should be calling? By the way I am doing this in C++, although I'm interested in whether the answer differs for C. Thanks ahead of time.
