• Nagios Apache Config with PHP-FPM downloading cgi files

  I'm trying to setup Nagios 3 under Apache 2.4 with PHP-FPM. I've run into a couple problems I could use help with. The PHP side of things seems to be working, I can see the home page and the sidebar. But all of the CGI files are downloading instead of executing, and when I try to click on "Read What's New In Nagios Core 3", I get an error /nagios3/docs/whatsnew.html was not found on this server. • Why do weekly tasks created via PowerShell using a different user fail with error 0x41306

  We have some scripts that create scheduled jobs using PowerShell as part of our application. When testing them recently, I noticed that some of them always failed immediately, and no output is ever produced (they don't even appear in the Get-Job list). After many days of tweaking, we've managed to isolate it to any jobs that are set to run weekly. Below is a script that creates two jobs that do exactly the same thing. When we run this on our domain, and provide credentials of a domain user, then force both jobs to run in the Task Scheduler GUI (right-click - Run), the daily one runs fine (0x0 result) and the weekly one fails (0x41306). Note: If I don't provide the -Credential param, both jobs work fine. The jobs only fail if the task is both weekly, and running as this domain user. I can't find information on why this is happening, nor think of any reason it would behave differently for weekly jobs. The "History£ tab in the Task Scheduler has almost no useful information, just "Task stopping due to user request" and "Task terminated", both of which have no useful info: Task Scheduler terminated "{eabba479-f8fc-4f0e-bf5e-053dfbfe9f62}" instance of the "\Microsoft\Windows\PowerShell\ScheduledJobs\Test1" task. Task Scheduler stopped instance "{eabba479-f8fc-4f0e-bf5e-053dfbfe9f62}" of task "\Microsoft\Windows\PowerShell\ScheduledJobs\Test1" as request by user "MyDomain\SomeUser" . What's up with this? Why do weekly tasks run differently, and how can I diganose this issue? This is PowerShell v3 on Windows Server 2008 R2. I've been unable to reproduce this locally, but I don't have a user set up in the same way as the one in our production domain (I'm working on this, but I wanted to post this ASAP in the hope someone knows what's happening!). • multiple php compiler on single apache installation

  elloo, i have some old php scripts which runs on php-5.2.x and the current server has php-5.3.x. to get around this problem,i have got two options one is to downgrade php-5.3.x or install php-5.2.x and php-5.3.x at the same time where php-5.2.x serve cgi script. i have decided go for the second option i have followed this tutorial and i can get most of it working however except execution of shell script which selects php-cgi version. i cannot get apache to execute this script. how do i get apache to execute #!/bin/sh # you can change the PHP version here. version="5.2.6" # php.ini file location, */php-5.2.6/lib equals */php-5.2.6/lib/php.ini. • BES Express - configure MDS to push messages from 3rd party web application

  Hi! I have developed IIS web service to send PAP messages using Blackberry Push API over MDS. And there is an application installed on device, configured to receive push messages on appropriate port. Everything works well on MDS simulator. But it's not working well in real environment: I have installed BES Express and register several devices. I can browse MDS url with appropriate port, so url is correct. Also port enabled for reliable pushes is used in push message and in device application. • Black screen appears when booting new install of Ubuntu 11.10 on my desktop, cannot access Grub menu to fix

  I installed 11.10 on my desktop PC but get a black screen after the BIOS screen when I try to boot it. I was able to run 10.04.04 on my hard drive before installing 11.10 and I am also able to use 11.10 on my usb pendrive and CD ROM. I've tried unplugging all USB devices before booting and also upgrading from 11.10 to 11.10. Holding the shift key from the BIOS screen doesn't allow me to access the GRUB menu to try: Highlight the first entry, press “e” to edit it. Navigate to words “quiet splash”, delete them and type “nomodeset” in their place (without quotes). Press Ctrl + X to continue boot. Once on the desktop, go to System Administration Additional Drivers and activate the recommended drivers. So running 11.10 on my pendrive, I tried editing /etc/default/grub, commenting out the GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT setting by putting a '#' in front of it to display the grub menu and setting GRUB_TIMEOUT setting to a value greater than or equal to 1 e.g. GRUB_TIMEOUT=10. However, when I run sudo update-grub, I get: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?) I get the same error with update-grub after: sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt and after: sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda reboot sudo update-grub Other suggestions to fix the update-grub problem: Open synaptic, then purge all the related grub installed packages and reinstall grub-pc then and finally: sudo update-grub Or use Grub Customizer http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275 What would be the best way to approach this? I'm concerned about purging "all the related grub installed packages" but if it's true some files are corrupted this would seem necessary. Also, was I executing the correct commands i.e. with mount and grub-install, before running grub-update?

• Recommended programming language for linux server management and web ui integration

  I am interested in making an in house web ui to ease some of the management tasks I face with administrating many servers; think Canonical's Landscape. This means doing things like, applying package updates simultaneously across servers, perhaps installing a custom .deb (I use ubuntu/debian.) Reviewing server logs, executing custom scripts, viewing status information for all my servers. I hope to be able to reuse existing command line tools instead of rewriting the exact same operations in a different language myself. I really want to develop something that allows me to continue managing on the ssh level but offers the power of a web interface for easily applying the same infrastructure wide changes. They should not be mutually exclusive. What are some recommended programming languages to use for doing this kind of development and tying it into a web ui? Why do you recommend the language(s) you do? I am not an experienced programmer, but view this as an opportunity to scratch some of my own itches as well as become a better programmer. I do not care specifically if one language is harder than another, but am more interested in picking the best tools for the job from the beginning. Feel free to recommend any existing projects that already integrate management of many systems into a single cohesive web ui, except Landscape (not free,) Ebox (ebox control center not free) and webmin (I don't like it, feels clunky and does not integrate well with the "debian way" of maintaining a server, imo. Also, only manages one system.) Thanks for any ideas! Update: I am not looking to reinvent the wheel of systems management, I just want to "glue" many preexisting and excellent tools together where possible and appropriate; this is why I wonder about what languages can interact well with pre-existing command line tools, while making them manageable with a web ui.

• PHP output buffer settings ignored by server

  I have been trying to flush the output of certain scripts to the browser on demand, but they do not work on our production server. For instance, I tried running the "Phoca Changing Collation tool" (find it on Google) and I don't see any output until the script finishes executing. I've tried immediately flushing the buffer on other scripts that work fine on any server but this one using the following code: echo "something"; ob_flush(); flush(); Setting "ob_implicit_flush(1);" doesn't help either. The server is Apache 2.2.21 with PHP 5.2.17 running on Linux. You can see our php.ini file here if that will help: http://www.smallfiles.org/download/1123/php.ini.html This isn't the only problem we are having with the server ignoring in-script directives. The server also ignores timeout coding such as: ini_set('max_execution_time', 900*60); AND set_time_limit(86400); Script always times out at the php.ini default. Doesn't seem to matter if script is executed in IE or Firefox. Tried "ini_set('zlib.output_compression_level', 'Off');" and checked that it is "Off" in the php.ini file. The code "apache_setenv('no-gzip', 1);" causes a fatal error so tried uploading a .htaccess file with the "mod_gzip_on No" directive. Neither helps. Tried running Apache as fcgi and suphp, but same results. Server is NOT in safe mode. Pullin ma hair out!

• Matlab computations done over Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) depend on POSIX permissions, ignores ACLs

  I'm a system administrator and have never used Matlab, so forgive my general ignorance of the program. My users have encountered problems when executing scripted Matlab actions over AFP to a Mac OS X Server 10.6.7 where the access control list (ACL) should allow actions, but the POSIX-style permissions disallow the activity. It seems as if Matlab, run locally on the Mac workstations on datasets on the remote server, ignores the ACLs entirely. This is the only application I've ever seen behave this way. The server's filesystem is HFS+J and all other activity is performing as expected. These users cannot use CIFS because of our integration with external directory systems. In this example, the directory bxdata, the members of the group cibturner should be able to modify the files. Indeed, they can using any other method except via Matlab scripts. When the Matlab script hits these files, the POSIX permissions of 644 disallow modification. It's as if the ACLs are irrelevant. • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

  I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. • PsExec and Remote Environment Variables, Logging, Etc.

  When I run PsExec on a remote computer, I always fall short of what I want. What I would like ideally in most situations is a) a log on an admin server where each individual log has the name of each the remote computer it was generated from (e.g. COMPNAME1.log, COMPNAME2.log, etc.) or b) a log file on each remote computer with whatever name I specify. When I try scenario (a), I use the following command. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log Problem is that it never works. All the computers just write to the log where %computername% is just the computer I execute PsExec from in my office. What I want are unique logs for each computer specific in the listofcomputers.txt that will correctly use the hostname from the remote environment variable without issue. Is that even possible? It does not seem to work for me. I tried this, and the syntax is clearly wrong. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo TEST >> \\server.company.tld\share\%computername%.log" PsExec just fails saying the system file cannot be found (read: syntax fail). As for scenario (b), it appears to be a variation of a similar problem. When I run a command like this, it does not work. %SystemDrive%\path\to\psexec.exe @listofcomputers.txt -u DOMAIN\username "cmd /c echo %computername% >> \\server.company.tld\share\aggregated.log" Is there something I do not understand about remote path and environment variables with PsExec on the cmd.exe console (I have not even tried the dreaded PowerShell yet). I know such things work in a batch file (cmd /c \\server.company.tld\share\runthis.bat), but is there a reason it will not work when executing commands as arguments? I always need this, and can never get it!

• Apache2 process stuck at 100% cpu, CLOSE_WAIT socket lingering

  I've troubleshooted the heck out of this today, and I can't seem to find any information on how to determine what is happening exactly. Basically, on my development server, another developer is causing CLOSE_WAIT connections that eat up one or more apache2 processes for several hours if I don't restart apache2. strace on any of the processes yields no information, only that it was able to attach. mod_proxy is not enabled. KeepAlive is on, KeepAliveTimeout is 15 seconds, MaxKeepAliveRequests is 100. From what I've been reading, this may or may not be an apache issue at all, just that that's how CLOSE_WAIT works (the server is waiting for a FIN packet to close the connection). I just can't believe that a server would be crippled so easily by not receiving a packet from a remote host telling it to close the connection. Especially without any intervention for well over an hour. Any tips? I'm about to pull my hair out. Edit : Also, there are no unusual entries in any apache log files. Edit 2: lsof -i shows only a single CLOSE_WAIT per hanging process. (That's what has been bothering me about this, as most other discussions talk about many CLOSE_WAIT connections, while I only have one per process.) The nature of the code that is running (php) doesn't really lend itself to closing open connections and whatnot. I can run the same code that he is executing with the same session data, and not result in a hanging process.

• PostgreSQL continuous archiving not running archive_command

  I've been trying to set up continuous archiving for a simple, test PostgreSQL 9.0 database, as per the documentation. In postgres.conf I've set: wal_level = archive archive_mode = on archive_command = 'touch /home/myusername/backup/testtouch' archive_timeout = 30s ...and restarted PostgreSQL. The file listed by touch never appears. I can manually run the touch command and it works as expected. If I try to create a backup, it waits forever for the archive_command. In psql; postgres=# SELECT pg_start_backup('touchtest'); pg_start_backup ----------------- 0/14000020 (1 row) postgres=# SELECT pg_stop_backup(); NOTICE: pg_stop_backup cleanup done, waiting for required WAL segments to be archived WARNING: pg_stop_backup still waiting for all required WAL segments to be archived (60 seconds elapsed) HINT: Check that your archive_command is executing properly. pg_stop_backup can be cancelled safely, but the database backup will not be usable without all the WAL segments. What would cause this? How can I troubleshoot it? Additional info: Running on CentOS 5.4. PostgreSQL 9.0.2 installed as root.

• Can't connect to MS SQL Server database using SSMS

  I have a database on line with Godaddy (who uses SQL Server 2005). They provide basic management tools, but tell you that for more advanced tools you can connect directly using SSMS. I followed their instructions to ensure my online database will accept remote connections, and can apparently log in using SSMS with success (after giving my hostname and access data). However: Now from in SSMS, when attempting to expand the "Databases" folder tree, I get the following error: Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Sdk.Sfc) An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo) The server principal "cmitchell" is not able to access the database "3pointdb" under the current security context. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 916) The irony is that 3pointdb isn't my database. It is just another in a long list of databases that show up when I access my Godaddy backend. From SSMS, I selected the default database to be the name of my database, which it did locate on the list when I browsed. Still same error message. It is trying to connect to a database that isn't mine! :( Godaddy support, after a bit of testing, said the problem isn't on their end. it's on mine. – Charles

• Unable to connect to CopSSH when running Windows service, works when running sshd directly

  I've been using CopSSH (that uses OpenSSH and Cygwin, so I don't know which of the three is the problem) as my SSH server application at home on Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit. I have used it for about a year with no real problems, other than it sometimes takes 2 or 3 connection attempts to get through, but it's always worked within a few attempts. A few days ago, it just stopped working. The Windows service is still running, and I've rebooted, restarted the service, etc. with no change. On the client (using Putty on Windows), I get the message "Software caused connection abort". On the server, my event viewer registers the following: fatal: Write failed: Socket operation on non-socket I finally got it working, but only by executing sshd.exe directly from the command line on the server. No special flags or options, just straight execution, and then when I connect remotely, it goes through. I do have firewall and anti-virus software which appears to be configured properly, but the fact that things work when running sshd.exe also indicates that the firewall is fine. I thought the service and executable did exactly the same thing, but apparently there's some difference. Does anyone have any ideas on where I should look for the problem? If I can't find something, I suppose I can write a Windows service or scheduled task that fires off sshd.exe directly and ensures that it stays running, but that's kind of a last resort, since it's just wrapping around something that should already work. I appreciate your help.

• Coldfusion 9 losing connection to MySQL 5 database server a couple of weeks after the server is started

  We get the following Coldfusion error message after our server have been running for a couple of weeks: Error Executing Database Query.Could not create connection to database server. Attempted reconnect 3 times We run Coldfusion Enterprise 9 on a one year old XServer with Snow Leopard and MySQL 5 The server has about ten DSN set up in the Coldfusion Administrator All local, with default advanced settings, and host set to "localhost" The server is not under heavy load. The strange thing is that after a restart of the server, everything works fine. Then after a week or so, some databases will stop working, in the sense that Coldfusion cannot create a connection to them. If I then go to the Coldfusion Administrator and click "Verify all datasources", I will get that only 2 or 3 got verified, the other ones failed, and it is always the same datasources that can't be verified when the server starts to behave like this if I try to verify again, BUT NOT neccessary the same datasources that couldn't be verified the last time the server behaved like this. I know about the setting "max_connections" and we have included a line for that setting in the MySQL config file and set it to 2000, and when we read it by a query it says "2000", so that can't be the problem. Anyone?

• Ubuntu root privs installation issue

  I am a fairly new Ubuntu user (and Linux user, for that matter) and I just downloaded a program whose installer was a .sh file. Not thinking, I copied the installer to an /opt subdirectory, thinking that I was going to install the application there: sudo cp ~/Downloads/fooInstaller.sh /opt/someDir I can't remember, but I either had to use sudo because /opt required it, or I just used it without thinking, but in any case, I prefixed with sudo. Once in /opt/someDir, I executed the installer again, using sudo: sudo sh fooInstaller.sh The terminal went crazy, and a few seconds later, a graphical install wizard popped up that guided me through the rest of the process. At the end of the wizard I was prompted to launch the program, and I did, and everything was great. Until... I closed the program, and attempted to add it to my Ubuntu "panel" (the icon panel at the top of the screen). The program was installed to /usr/local/foo/theProgram, and so I specified that URL as the command in the custom app launcher. When I open the program through the panel/launcher (at the top of the screen), the program doesn't load or operate correctly. I get a lot of error messages complaining about being denied permissions. I'm assuming that this is a "superuser/installation/privs" issue, and not a problem with the application (hence this post at superuser.com instead of the application's forums), because when I launch the program from the terminal with sudo, it opens and executes perfectly fine, just like it did the first time around after the install wizard finished. I realize I'm probably going to have to uninstall the program completely, and re-install it differently. Finally, my question: After uninstalling, can I avoid all these issue by just running the installer (sh fooInstaller.sh) right out of my Downloads directory, sans the sudo prefix? If not, how do I get the program to install without root privs so that I can add it to my panel/launcher and get it executing correctly? Sorry for the long post but I didn't want to omit any details because, as I'm sure you can tell, I'm not really sure I know what I'm doing. Thanks for any help here!

• Authenticated User Impersonation in Classic ASP under IIS7

  I've recently moved one of our servers from Server 2003 and IIS6 to Server 2008 R2 and IIS7 (technically IIS7.5 I suppose). In doing so I am transitioning a small account management tool written in classic ASP and have run into a problem with user impersonation. Extensive searching hasn't been much help so far. Under IIS6, the site was configured to impersonate the logged-in user. Thus, if a domain admin logged in, he was able to run commands to create user directories, adjust permissions, etc. Using Procmon you can see the processes executing as that user. This worked fine. However, with the same code under IIS7, I am unable to get this behavior. I have enabled Basic Authentication, disabled Anonymous Auth, enabled impersonation and have changed the app pool to classic instead of integrated pipelining. Everything seems to be configured correctly, however, all the processes launched by the classic ASP site continue to run as the default AppPool identity and not the logged-in user. If it matters, programs are being launched with code such as: set Wsh = Server.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Wsh.Run("cmd.exe /C mkdir D:\users\foo") Monitoring via Procmon shows cmd.exe being run as either "Classic .NET AppPool" or "DefaultAppPool" depending on the pipeline mode. Any suggestions on how to get the classic ASP site to impersonate and execute as the authenticated user would be great. Thanks!

• Google: "302 Moved" in Firefox

  For some Google search queries executed from the Firefox search bar, or manually by typing in the URL, I get a ''302 Moved'' page. I did a quick virus scan, have checked the hosts file and the plugins and add-ons that are installed in Firefox. Nothing is out of the ordinary. What could be the problem? These URLs (and any URL with google.com, empty and firefox-a in them) show me a 302 Moved page: https://www.google.com/search?q=c%23+empty+array&client=firefox-a https://www.google.com/search?q=empty&client=firefox-a Whereas these URLs work fine: https://www.google.com/search?q=c%23+empty+array (no firefox-a) https://www.google.com/search?q=empty (no firefox-a) https://www.google.com/search?q=c%23+array&client=firefox-a (no empty) https://www.google.nl/search?q=c%23+empty+array&client=firefox-a (no .com) By default Google redirects my queries to their .nl website, and uses HTTPS. I am currently executing a full system virus scan using Security Essentials. My Firefox plugins were up-to-date. No unfamiliar Firefox plugins or add-ons found. Restarting Firefox did not solve the issue. The issue does not occur in Internet Explorer. The hosts file did not contain any unfamiliar entries.

• IP address from a MAC address

  I'm writing a class to integrate a POS card reader device to our software. In order for it to work I must know what IP it's using. We were given some sample code by the service provider and the way they do this is they open a website (http://www.ebizchargeemv.com/getip.php?mac={MAC address of device}) and it would return the IP address of the device. The device I'm using is a POSLynx220 Mini. It has an ethernet port that connects to the internet to communicate with the service provider. I send TCP data to it and the device then controls a PIN pad that prompts a client to swipe his card. It's probably a mini computer that communicates with the service provider and uses the PIN pad as its input device. Just being curious but how did they implement this? Are they implementing it using ARP? I'm planning on not using their website to determine the IP of the device. I've seen some code that uses ARP but using executing ARP in one of the PC didn't detect the POS device.

• svnsync loses revision properties although hook installed

  Hello all! I have a pretty weird problem. We have setup an SVN-Mirror via cronjob (because it needs to go from inside to outside of a firewall, so no post-commit-hook possible) and svnsync. We installed a pre-revprop-hook just as told. Everything seems to work fine, except that it doesn't. E.g. when manually executing the script. # svnsync --non-interactive sync file://<path-to-mirror> --source-username <usr> --source-password <pwd> Committed revision 19817. Copied properties for revision 19817. No error, no complaints. But if checking for the revision properties it says: # svnlook info <path-to-mirror> 0 # svn info -r HEAD file://<path-to-mirror> 2>&1 Path: <root-of-mirror> URL: file://<path-to-mirror> Repository Root: file://<path-to-mirror> Repository UUID: <uid> Revision: 19817 Node Kind: directory Last Changed Rev: 19817 So somehow the author and timestamp information gets lost. But we need that information for our internal processes. Since no error or warning is produced I have absolutely no idea even where to start to look. Everything is local (except for the remote master), so there are no server-logs to look at. I also tried to manually recopy via svnsync copy-revprops (http://chestofbooks.com/computers/revision-control/subversion-svn/svnsync-Copy-revprops-Ref-svnsync-C-Copy-revprops.html). It says Copied properties for revision 19885. But when I query them, it's just the same. Any ideas how I could approach that problem, or even better -- how to solve it? Any ideas appreciated.
