• Logarithmic spacing of FFT subbands

  I'm trying to do the examples within the GameDev.net Beat Detection article ( http://archive.gamedev.net/archive/reference/programming/features/beatdetection/index.html ) I have no issue with performing a FFT and getting the frequency data and doing most of the article. I'm running into trouble though in the section 2.B, Enhancements and beat decision factors. in this section the author gives 3 equations numbered R10-R12 to be used to determine how many bins go into each subband: R10 - Linear increase of the width of the subband with its index R11 - We can choose for example the width of the first subband R12 - The sum of all the widths must not exceed 1024 He says the following in the article: "Once you have equations (R11) and (R12) it is fairly easy to extract 'a' and 'b', and thus to find the law of the 'wi'. This calculus of 'a' and 'b' must be made manually and 'a' and 'b' defined as constants in the source; indeed they do not vary during the song." However, I cannot seem to understand how these values are calculated...I'm probably missing something simple, but learning fourier analysis in a couple of weeks has left me Decimated-in-Mind and I cannot seem to see it.

• Is it possible to procure venture capital based on in-progress ideas? [migrated]

  I hope this is not the wrong forum for this question, but I can't find one in the Stack Exchange "family" that would be more appropriate. I have ideas for two web sites which I think will be quite popular (they are totally unrelated to each other). I am a programmer, and a "creative" (photographer, author, musician). So I have the "vision" as well as the technical know-how to bring these websites into being. My "problem" is that I'm champing at the bit to complete them, and don't have much time to work on them (being employed fulltime, etc.) If I continue to work on them in my so-called spare time, it will probably be a year or more before they are both done. If I was in a position to work on them fulltime (IOW, if I had a "silent partner" willing to invest enough money that I could quit my job), I could have them complete in about three months. I would be willing to partner with somebody or some group who would back me financially in this way. My vision/work combined with their monetary investment could bring about "great things" or at least moderately great things. I know you can "crowd fund" startups and so on, but for that you need to expose your idea. My ideas are not something I would want to make public, as somebody might "steal" them. I'm willing to discuss them with serious individual potential investors, though (provided they were willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement). Does anybody have any recommendation on how I might find a suitable partner[s] for this/these ventures?

• What is the proper response to lousy error message?

  I've just come across (for the 47 millionth time) some code that looks like this: except IOError, e: print "Problems reading file: %s." % filename sys.exit( 1 ) My first reaction is very visceral: the person who coded this is a complete idiot. How hard is it to print error messages to stderr and to include the system error message in the string? I haven't used python in years, and it took me all of 4 minutes to track down the documentation to figure out how to get the error message from the exception object e and the syntax for printing to stderr. My "complete idiot" reaction was slightly lessened since at least a non-zero value is passed to sys.exit, but I still find this code offensive. My prime thought is that the developer who wrote this is a complete novice for whom I have zero respect. Am I over-reacting? Surely there are excuses for all sorts of bad coding practices, but is there anything that can possibly excuse this sort of $#|t? I guess there are two question here: one is a duplicate of What are developer's problems with helpful error messages?, and the other is "am I over-reacting, or is it valid to conclude that the author of the above code is a novice?"

• Languages with a clear distinction between subroutines that are purely functional, mutating, state-changing, etc?

  Lately I've become more and more frustrated that in most modern programming languages I've worked with (C/C++, C#, F#, Ruby, Python, JS and more) there is very little, if any, language support for determining what a subroutine will actually do. Consider the following simple pseudo-code: var x = DoSomethingWith(y); How do I determine what the call to DoSomethingWith(y) will actually do? Will it mutate y, or will it return a copy of y? Does it depend on global or local state, or is it only dependent on y? Will it change the global or local state? How does closure affect the outcome of the call? In all languages I've encountered, almost none of these questions can be answered by merely looking at the signature of the subroutine, and there is almost never any compile-time or run-time support either. Usually, the only way is to put your trust in the author of the API, and hope that the documentation and/or naming conventions reveal what the subroutine will actually do. My question is this: Does there exist any languages today that make symbolic distinctions between these types of scenarios, and places compile-time constraints on what code you can actually write? (There is of course some support for this in most modern languages, such as different levels of scope and closure, the separation between static and instance code, lambda functions, et cetera. But too often these seem to come into conflict with each other. For instance, a lambda function will usually either be purely functional, and simply return a value based on input parameters, or mutate the input parameters in some way. But it is usually possible to access static variables from a lambda function, which in turn can give you access to instance variables, and then it all breaks apart.)

I have a few requirements: Not copyleft like the GNU (L)GPL and allows for redistribution under other licenses Allows other people to redistribute your (modified) work but prevents that other people freely make money off my work (they need to ask/buy a commercial license if they want to) Compatible with the GNU (L)GPL Not responsible for any damage caused by my work Now, I wrote my own little license based on the BSD and CC Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 licenses, but I am not sure if it will hold in court.   I'm currently working on a wordpress plugin. My client gives me a specs doc (a powerpoint presentation, if you can call that a specs doc), and I code the requested functionality. Every time I send him code every file containing code starts with these lines: Author: My Name Copyright: The_client's_company.com License: MIT Expat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expat_License) My intention being giving my client complete right to relicense and distribute the code under any other license (as the TOS of the freelancing website requires, plus I know he intends to sell it under a proprietary license), but at the same time giving myself the right to expand and redistribute the plugin under MIT license if I wish to (not that I do). The reason is I am paid only 10USD/hour (this is my first gig) so I want to at least keep the right to reuse parts of the code in other projects or expand it if I want to start a similar project myself when I finish the contract (unlikely, but who knows...) or show it to potential employees. The contract we agreed upon doesn't include any licensing specifications but I've informed him on the emails we've interchanged that although all my work is licensed by default as MIT I'm giving my clients the copyright of the code I produce so they can relicense it at will before distribution. Is this the correct way of achieving that?

• Possible to draw a select portion of a render target? (in XNA)

  I'm going to try to do this in reverse fashion and skip straight to the punch line, and then give the back story afterward: Is it possible to, after drawing a scene to a RenderTarget2D, only draw a select portion of the RenderTarget2D, if I don't want the entire thing? I'm using xTile to manage world data in my game (it's a great piece of work, colinvella [xTile's author] has made an amazing product), and for the most part it works great. xTile supports parallax effects in its layers to add some wonderful depth to 2d scenes, which was great, until I implemented a dynamic split-screen system into my game. Wanted to make a co-op game that wouldn't require players to be in close proximity to each other, so I made it so that if the players separate too far apart, the singular full-screen viewport 'snaps-apart', and is replaced by two split-screen viewports, which then smoothly transition to their respective player targets. The effect is pretty smooth aside from the part where the parallax backgrounds become skewed once the viewports split, because xTile's ratio for handling parallax effects is dependent upon viewport size. This is unfortunate, because the effect would otherwise be really snazzy, but the backgrounds become pretty heavily affected when the game goes from single-viewport to multi-viewport. So, Colinvella suggests using rendertargets to record the scene at full viewport size, and then only drawing a portion of it. But as far as I can tell, that isn't even possible? That being said, I've never even used render targets before, so I'm still learning, hence the question here.

  Upon searching for a fast primr algorithm, I stumbled upon this: public static boolean isP(long n) { if (n==2 || n==3) return true; if ((n&0x1)==0 || n%3==0 || n<2) return false; long root=(long)Math.sqrt(n)+1L; // we check just numbers of the form 6*k+1 and 6*k-1 for (long k=6;k<=root;k+=6) { if (n%(k-1)==0) return false; if (n%(k+1)==0) return false; } return true; } My questions are: Why is long being used everywhere instead of int? Because with a long type the argument could be much larger than Integer.MAX thus making the method more flexible? In the second 'if', is n&0x1 the same as n%2? If so why didn't the author just use n%2? To me it's more readable. The line that sets the 'root' variable, why add the 1L? What is the run-time complexity? Is it O(sqrt(n/6)) or O(sqrt(n)/6)? Or would we just say O(n)?

• How safe is it to rely on thirdparty Python libs in a production product?

  I'm new to Python and come from the write-everything-yourself world of PHP (at least this is how I always approached it). I'm using Flask, WTForms, Jinja2, and I've just discovered Flask-Login which I want to use. My question is about the reliability of using thirdparty libraries for core functionality in a project that is planned to be around for several years. I've installed these libraries (via pip) into a virtualenv environment. What happens if these libraries stop being distributed? Should I back up these libraries (are they eggs)? Can I store these libraries in my project itself, instead of relying on pip to install them in a virtualenv? And should I store these separately? I'm worried that I'll rely on a library for core functionality, and then one day I'll download an incompatible version through pip, or the author or maintainer will stop distributing it and it'll no longer be available. How can I protect against this, and ensure that any thirdparty libraries that I use in my projects will always be available as they are now?

• Baseline for GIS Applications

  The application I introduced here yesterday can best be understood via its author's explanation: "As I developed several different WorldWind-based applications, I noticed that they all started out the same. Terramenta was born so I wouldn't have to recreate the baseline every time, I could just provide NetBeans plugin modules to introduce the new features required by different projects." So, to try it out for myself, I checked out the sources from the Mercurial repo today, built them, and ran them. hg clone https://bitbucket.org/heidtmare/terramenta On Windows, things worked fine, on Ubuntu they didn't because the relevant native libraries aren't provided yet out of the box. Here's the result: The above provides the WorldWind globe, together with all the standard options, e.g., for showing names and other WorldWind features, together with several features that I don't understand yet, such as tools for creating shapes and a recorder for replaying sequences. The complete application is like this, i.e., one single functionality module is provided, which exposes several API packages that can be extended: It would really be cool if the above module could also be added to a Maven-based application via a reference to a Maven repository, in the way that Timon Veenstra and the AgroSense team have made available their GeoViewer. One cool thing from the GeoViewer solution is the Flamingo menubar, which I added to Terramenta by simply putting the dependency below into the application POM: <dependency>    <groupId>nl.cloudfarming.client</groupId>    <artifactId>menu</artifactId>    <version>1.0.24</version></dependency> The result, without doing anything other than the above: I am looking forward to helping to document the use cases and developer scenarios for Terramenta! • Automatic generate code: "derived work"?

  For example, I've GPL software. I'm the author of this GPL software. This GPL software has, between its code, Doxygen comments. These Doxygen comments are written to generate a CC-BY-SA html page, in order to upload this generated documentation in my project website under CC-BY-SA license. But, the Doxygen documentation output is a "derivate work"? After all, this documentation is based on my GPL source code. In this case, the documentation must be GPL. But, I want the documentation is CC-BY-SA, because it is documentation. GFDL doesn't help. GPL code can't become GFDL (the opposite yes). If this output is really a derivate work, I think, creates a strange situation, because, if I distribute my work, the recipient users can't legally distribute the generated documentation: while with my work I can do I want, the users don't, thus, they have to distribute any derivated work with the same license I offer them. What is the solution?

• Is this high coupling?

  Question I'm currently working a on an assignment for school. The assignment is to create a puzzle/calculator program in which you learn how to work with different datastructures (such as Stacks). We have generate infix math strings suchs as "1 + 2 * 3 - 4" and then turn them in to postfix math strings such as "1 2 + 3 * 4 -". In my book the author creates a special class for converting the infix notation to postfix. I was planning on using this but whilst I was about to implement it I was wondering if the following is what you would call "high coupling". I have read something about this (nothing that is taught in the book or anything) and was wondering about the aspect (since I still have to grasp it). Problem I have created a PuzzleGenerator class which generates the infix notation of the puzzle (or math string, whatever you want to call it) when it's instantiated. I was going to make a method getAnswer() in which I would instantiate the InToPost class (the class from the book) to convert the infix to postfox notation and then calculate the answer. But whilst doing this I thought: "Is using the InToPost class inside this method a form a high coupling, and would it be better to place this in a different method?" (such as a "convertPostfixToInfix" method, inside the PuzzleGenerator class) Thanks in advance.

• Another hibernation question

  I installed Ubuntu on my Windows 7 Sager laptop using Wubi. Hibernate (i.e. suspend to disc) is not an option from the power icon, only suspend, shutdown, etc. Hibernate is also not an option from my battery/lid close options. I understand that hibernation is disabled by default in Ubuntu 12.04. I tried running pm-hibernate but I get the following message: Looking for splash system... none s2disk: Snapshotting system and then the computer just hangs with a black screen. According to the documentation here if this fails then I can't enable hibernate but it offers no help in making pm-hibernate succeed. Could swap be my problem? It looks like I have very small swap: user@ubuntu:~$ cat /proc/swaps Filename Type Size Used Priority /host/ubuntu/disks/swap.disk file 262140 0 -1 The advice on SwapFaq is only for the author's set up (e.g. I don't have an Ubuntu install disk since I used Wubi) and he says that 'INFO: This will not work for 12.04, resume from hibernate work differently in 12.04.' Any advice? I really need to get hibernate working to use my laptop as a, er, laptop. Thanks

• Compilation problem [closed]

  I am trying to compile a program called Triangle Mesh Generator. It is an open source code written in ANSI C. I need it to bo a callable lib so I am using a switch (#define) created by it's Author. However I get this error: /usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-linux-gnu/4.6/../../../x86_64-linux-gnu/crt1.o: In function `_start': collect2: ld returned 1 exit status make: *** [triangle] Error 1 I am not sure why such an error occurs. Worth adding is that compiling it as a stand alone program is succesful. I am using GCC on 12.04. The lines quoted above constitute the total output. What I put in the terminal is just make in the proper folder. There are no other errors, warnings, or other messages. Link to the sources I found some additional instructions. I'll get back after reading them :] EDIT: I have found some additional instructions that let me compile it. Thanks for help. I am closing question right now. Regards

• Compensation advice on overseas contract with former employer [closed]

  I work as a full time developer in the US. My previous employer from 3 years ago has sold a large startup project in Russia for next month, however their three and only senior developers have recently resigned. I still have somewhat intricate knowledge of the software to be installed since I was the original author, so my former employer, in somewhat of a panic, has asked if I can take two weeks vacation from my current job to fly to Russia and lead the startup. Logistically, I can do this and my current employer agreed without issue. Said former employer is very small and hasn't hired contractors before, and I haven't contracted either. The company simply asked my what my salary requirements are. I had, and still have, a great professional relationship with the owners. I feel like I'm doing this as a favor in a way. Payment is guaranteed, but I have no idea what I should bill for overseas work. If it matters, I was paid around 110k at the former employer. Just looking for some advice. There are many contracting salary threads here, but I feel that the overseas work throws a twist in things. Thank you!

This bit here struck me hard enough to stop and write it down: I mean a man whose hopes and aims may sometimes lie (as most men's sometimes do, I dare say) above the ordinary level, but to whom the ordinary level will be high enough after all if it should prove to be a way of usefulness and good service leading to no other. All generous spirits are ambitious, I suppose, but the ambition that calmly trusts itself to such a road, instead of spasmodically trying to fly over it, is of the kind I care for. It is Woodcourt's kind. (John Jarndyce to Esther Summerson, Bleak House, ch. 60) Woodcourt is, of course, one of the heroes of the story. It is a heroism that is attractive to me.   I am trying to compile my program on the command line on windows using the java command and it says: Error: could not find or load main class or addition class It is for a program for adding two integers. The winners were selected across 8 product categories from 11 countries spanning diverse industries around the world. This is a two-part blog series. • Good resources for learning modern OpenGL (3.0 or later)?

  I stumble upon the search of a good resource to start with OpenGL (3.0 or later) . Well, I found a lot of books but none of them can be considered a good resource! Here two examples: OpenGL Programming Guide (7th edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321552628/khongrou-20 This is FULL of deprecated material! Almost every chapters begin with a note about that. OpenGL Superbible (5th Edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321712617/khongrou-20 This book uses a library created by the author to explain the main arguments, hiding what you want to learn! I don't want to learn how to use your library! I want to learn OpenGL! I hope that you understand this is not the same question like "hey I'm not able to use Google... tell me how to learn OpenGL". I've just finished a full and deep search but I can't find a good and complete resource to learn the "new" OpenGL avoiding deprecated topics. Can someone heading me in the right direction? I know C++ and I have 10 years of experience in development... where I can find a good resource?! I want to spend time on it and I want to learn deeply. (please feel free to edit my question, my English is terrible!)

• Learning project Custom c# Cms [closed]

  I want to start new project customCms, cause I think it's a good starting point to implement my collected knowledge from c#, ddd, nhibernate, mvc3, js. It will be great if I hear some guidlines from expirienced users here. I will use C# ASP.NET MVC3 razor view engine. Also I was thinking of NHibernate ORM, I dont know if using Nhibernate will cause performanse down. Initially MSSQL 2008 will be used, but using ORM layer cause that I can switch to some other db with no pain. I was thinking to create News entity which will have properties Id Name Created Updated IntroText Content Title Author ListPhotos Every input will be validated with untroub. java script on the view, and it will be validated on db level as well. Maybe it is best approach to create some interface which will be implemented by my cmsClient entity like NewsEntity. In this interface will be included everything it should be requested from my client in future. At least some stuff which are not included in entity right now, consumed data by rss feed, wcf, etc. So basically everything you think its good idea from documentating project, to coding. Everyone is welcomed to brainstorm for custom cms.
