• Is there a suitable public license for my needs (see body)?

  I would like to license my project with the flowing conditions: Personal and educational usage of the program and its source codes is to be free. In case of publishing of derivative works the original work and author (me) must be mentioned (incl. textual link to my website in a not-very-far-hidden place) and the derivative work must have different name. A derivative work can be closed-source. In every case of commercial (when the end-user is a commercial body (as a company (expect of non-profit companies), an individual entrepreneur or government office)) usage of my work or any of derivative works made by anyone, the end-user, service provider or the derivative author must buy a commercial license from me. I mean no guarantees or resoinsibilities, either expressed or implied... (except the case when one explicitly purchases a support service contract from me and the particular contract specifies a responsibility). Is there a known common license for this case? May it be OSI-approved?

• Will VC++ MFC become obsolete in near future?

  Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI development slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well? How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

• Is naming a software product the same as a book legally problematic?

  I came up with a name for a software product I'm developing. It's composed of two common English words put together (for example, Firefox, Silverlight, etc.). I Googled the name to see if it was being used by any other software product before committing to it. After finding none, I did notice that there is a book published around 60 years ago, by that same name. Would it be legally problematic to name my software product as such, or does it being a software product vs a book make it irrelevant? PS - I know this isn't really a programming question, but naming is related to software development, isn't it? ;) PPS - How do companies like Microsoft get away with naming things "Windows" and "Office"? Or are they just legally called "Microsoft Windows" and "Microsoft Office"? Do developer names always precede software product names? Would naming a software product "Jones Office" be illegal?

• Rails link from one model to another based on db field?

  Hi Everyone, I have a company model and a person model with the following relationships: class Company < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :kases has_many :people def to_s; companyname; end end class Person < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :kases # foreign key in join table belongs_to :company end In the create action for the person, I have a select box with a list of the companies, which assigns a company_id to that person's record: <%= f.select :company_id, Company.all.collect {|m| [m.companyname, m.id]} %> In the show view for the person I can list the company name as follows: <%=h @person.company.companyname %> What I am trying to work out, is how do I make that a link to the company record? I have tried: <%= link_to @person.company.companyname %> but that just outputs the company name inside a href tag but links to the current page. Thanks, Danny

• How can I explain to a programmer that CSS positioning has many benefits over table based layouts?

  I have a friend who wishes to work as a freelance web developer, but insists that tables are the way forwards for layouts. Several points he maintains in favour of tables: 1 This is what was taught at the beginning of 10 years of programming & computer science degrees. 2 Large companies use tables to achieve 'technical' things. 3 It saves time I have coded him some examples of CSS exactly matching table based layouts, and provided many links to articles explaining SEO and accessibility benefits. From the perspective of a client, I have been explaining to him that I wouldn't hire someone using outdated methods as their main strategy for layout. As he is my friend and I wish him every success, I believe it is important for him to gain the best start when pitching for work. The question again: How can I explain to a programmer that CSS positioning has many benefits over table based layouts?

• White Label Ecommerce app. Shared or Individual dbs

  Currently I'm working with an in house white label cms that we resell to multiple clients and it all runs from the same box/db. I'm just looking at converting this to have an ecommerce version that we'll run alongside it. I'm wondering whether there will be an issue keeping all the products/categories/orders in one db or whether it would be advisory to separate each instance of the site into its own db for this. These white label instances will only be sold to smaller companies that probably wont have masses of traffic/products and are looking for a simple ecommerce site. Anything larger will definitely get its own hosting and db. But for smaller scale stuff do you think a single db will be ok?

• WPF DataGrid Entity Framework: Is it possible to bind a datagrid column to a method/function?

  Hi. I'm wondering if it's possible to bind a gridcolumn (field) to a method or function of an entity? For example I have two entities Person and Company that both inherit the abstract entity Addressee. In my grid I'm listing all Addressees (both persons and companies). I have a column, Name, in the datagrid that I whish to bind to a function GetName(). This function is part of the entity Addressee and based on what type of addressee it is it returns CompanyName (if company) or FirstName+' '+LastName (if person). I also have tried to add a partial class Addressee with a property Name that does the same thing as the function descried over, but this failes when I'm saving to database because the column Name does not exist in database. Can anybody please help me? :-)

• Do I have to release modifications made to a GPL v2 CMS?

  If we use a CMS that is covered by the GPL (v2), do we have to re-release the source code of the CMS if we make modifications to the core? The GPL v2 states: The GPL does not require you to release your modified version. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization. But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL. The grey area for me here is the part that states "if you release the modified version to the public in some way" - does displaying a website to the public count as "releasing it to the public"? What about if a custom plugin is written which integrates with the CMS - are we required to release the source? Does this count as a modification?

• Testing for security vulnerabilities on web applications

  A lot of companies use CMS software that updates on the regular, often they are security fixes, implying that the previous version have security vulnerabilities. But most clients never upgrade this, or even the CMS has been modified so that an update would break the site. Are there sites that document these exploits, and instruct how to test for them? Or does this information not even get published? (in order not to have people try to exploit them) Also is there a generic php/js based check list to prevent hack attempts? I know about SQL injections and XSS, but I'm sure that there are more threats out there. Peace

  I have an SQLite table used by Core Data with the following elements: Name: John LastName: Foobar Age: 23 Name: Bob LastName: Baz Age: 37 Name: Peter LastName: Fooqux Age: 32 Name: John LastName: Bar Age: 29 Those are all in a to-many relationship from another object "Company". I need to query the database and retrieve all Company objects with employees called "John" but whose last name does NOT contain "Foo". I did go as far as to make the following predicate: [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY employee.name = 'John'"]; How do I get to filter only by companies whose Johns don't have "Foo" in their last names?

  Does any US wireless carrier offer individuals or companies with a direct connection to the SMSC? The number is 747-772-3101 (repalce 7's with 6's) This number is registered to t-mobile, also verified by t-mobile to be a valid subscriber sending 160,000+ text messages monthly and that all they have is an unlimited text messaging plan on top of the cheapest voice plan. This company of the number verified to me that they don't use gsm modems as they are too slow. So I know it's possible but who would I contact, Sales or anyone else reachable through a 1-800 is ignorant to these services and developer.t-mobile is worthless and doesn't reply to emails. Any info??

  Dear Guys I am somehow newbie and sometimes guru , but at this moment i don't have enough time to research My nightmare is , my boss ask me to create an interactive floor ( he just saw in an exhibition ) , he ask me to create one of them instead of buying , i am an actionscript crawler and developer with some skills in java and c# programming , i just made some track motion with a simple web cam , and this idea came to my mind if i can use an infrared or thermographic camera instead of simple camera so i can get better positioning if camera place at top of floor ! Now i just came here to ask you guys is there any resource , tip , help i can know before getting into this deal !? is there any lib or api out to deal with this ?!   I have worked using different languages like C++/Java and currently AS3. Most applications were computer vision, and small 2D computer games. Most companies that I have worked for, they use Singletons in a language like AS3, to retrieve elements or classes in an easy way. Their problem is basically they needs some variables or to call other functions from other classes. In a language like AS3, there is no private constructor, and they write a hacky code to prevent new instances. In Java and C++ I also faced the situation that I need to use other classe's members or to call their functions in different classes. The question is, is there a better or another design, to let other classes interact with each others without using singletons? I feel that composition is the answer, but I need more detailed solutions or design suggestions.

But my problem is I am not able to download from file sharing sites like filesonic, rapidshare, hotfile etc. I want to know how can I get download (actual download) url from these sites, or at least how these sites are hiding this info (and where), so I can get that somehow... Is there any open source library or framework to help me with this? How firefox or other desktop browser get this link? Any help will be much appreciated! Update 1 : I don't want to bypass their advertising and revenue streams. Almost all file sharing companies also provide free downloads with low bandwidth, I only want to use that service. there are many download managers available now for iPhone like - "Downloads Lite". • Reason for monolithic data files

  Primarily this seems to be a technique used by games, where they have all the sounds in one file, textures in another etc. With these files commonly reaching the GB size. What is the reason behind doing this over maintaining it all in subdirectories as small files - one per texture which many small games use this, with the monolithic system being favoured by larger companies? Is there some file system overhead with lots of small files? Are they trying to protect their property - although most just seem to be a compressed file with a new extension?

• A good architecture is evil? Hardcode forever?

  I have worked in many companies. Most of all reached a big success in their field. Some times I found the code was written by owner or co-owner or the first developer of this company. It was strange from architectural point of view code or awful code styled, or hardcoded and so on. I know a couple of startups, that were grown up and were started from the "one night" code. Is it only way to get success to write code in this way? Why does a code written "on knee" but in time is better than delayed well thought-out one? What about future? Which way is the best: to write a good architecture, code and spend some more time at the startup or to write "fast" and hardcoded one that would be completely (partially) throw out (or maybe wouldn't) after some period of time (or never)?

  I'm looking for a tool to do some automated GUI testing on a HTML5 canvas component we're developing. Basically I'm looking for a tool that is able to record the clicks and events on the canvas component and is able to replay those events. So far most of the testing tools like Telerik WebUI Testing Suite, Selenium, TestSwarm, qUnit, Jasmine, Hudson seems that they don't fully support HTML5 canvas testing. • How to take a percentage of a Credit Card transaction?

  Essentially what I am trying to do is setup a work flow similar to PayPal. I have created an application that allows my clients to accept online donations and what I want to do is take % percent of that transaction off the top. The problems I have run into are: Authroize does not allow me to take on an additional fee that is paid out to my account I could run a report every month on all my clients transactions to determine what they owe but this is less than ideal All of the companies I looked at do not allow for aggregation where by all of the donation systems pay into my account then I remit payment to my clients Does anyone know of a company that allows for this or is my only option here going to be to setup my own Payment Gateway or is there a simpler solution?

From what I've seen, functional programming has several advantages over the classical imperative style: Stateless programs; No side effects Concurrency; Plays extremely nice with the rising multi-core technology Programs are usually shorter and in some cases easier to read Productivity goes up (example: Erlang) Imperative programming is a very old paradigm (as far as I know) and possibly not suitable for the 21st century Why are companies using or programs written in functional languages still so "rare"? Why, when looking at the advantages of functional programming, are we still using imperative programming languages? Maybe it was too early for it in 1990, but today?

  In Hibernate HQL, how would you query through a many-to-many association. If I have a Company with multiple ProductLines and other companies can offer these same product lines, I have a Company entity, a ProductLine entity and an association table CompanyProductLine. In SQL, I can get what I need like this: select * from company c where c.companyId in (select companyId from companyProductLine cpl, productline pl where cpl.productLineId = pl.productLineId and pl.name= 'some value'); My problem sees to lie with the association I defined in the Company.hbm.xml file: <set name="productLines" cascade="save-update" table="CompanyProductLine"> <key column="companyId"/> <many-to-many class="com.foo.ProductLine" column="productLineId" /> </set> Any HQL I seem to come up with will throw a: 'expecting 'elements' or 'indices"' Hibernate exception. Thoughts on what the proper HQL would be?

On further searching I found that there is also an - iPhone Developer Enterprise Program, which is available to companies with 500 or more employees and a Dun & Bradstreet number. So I want to know - which will be the best way for me according to my requirements ? Also I want to know that say if I choose Adhoc distribution then is there any way for automatic up-gradation in it ie. to install new version of my application on user's iPhone or iPod without deleting the old version.   My program is getting a false positive from a certain 3 letter Anti Virus Company. Its just our companies branded version of Ultra VNC. Its only this one company that's identifying it as a virus and we've been using the same copy of that program for almost a year. I know its possible to tell this Anti Virus program the VNC client is safe, but I can't do that for all of our clients. I've tried to find a way to contact this company to see if they can do something to prevent this from happening, but I'm not getting anywhere. Has anyone who's experiened this issue with thier software, found a solution? Thanks

Would you (and why) hire a foreigner, which experience is documented in CV and portfolio, which can communicate in english (with grammar mistakes, but still)?
