• How to get or own your own IP address?

  The website we running let people register their own URL and redirect to our website to their user account. Lets it is something similar to Blogspot.com where users can have their own URL. The problem is that in order to do this we need to have static IP address for the DNS redirection to work. We can easily get static IP addresses from most hosting companies, but if we change our hosting company it means we will have to force all our users to change their DNS setting to our new IP address. This if very problematic. Is there a way of owning our own IP address that we can take it with us to wherever hosting company we decide to go with? Or there there other easier solutions out there?

  My friends and I are starting a game like Pokemon and we wanted to know how will we add monsters to the game? We're using VisualBasic because my friend's brother said it would be easier. So far we can put pictures of the monsters on the screen and you can click to attack and stuff. Right now when we want to add a monster we have to make a new window. This will take us a long time to make all the windows for each type of monster. Is there a tool or something to make this go faster? How do game companies do this?

• Is it possible to bind data asynchronously between two dropdownlists in a view?

  I'd like to achieve the following effect using ASP.NET MVC and JQuery. I've got a drop down list displaying a list of Countries. I want to make it so that when I change the value of the country, a new drop down list appears below it, showing a list of companies whose country of origin is the particular selected company. The thing is that I do not want to rely too much on controller actions because I'm using it in a Template Helper which is a "headless" view. Can I bind it somehow?

  Hi there, I have very easy question, but I simply have any idea of the answer. I have developed a small mobile-application using java, for my nokia. The problem is that when installed on my samsung the application simply crashed. Then I tried on my other nokia but different model, and I didn't got the normal behavior. So my question is, does anyone have any idea how companies that develop mobiles applications/games test their software. Does they have to have all models for all mobiles phones??

• Should you remove all warnings in your Verilog or VHDL design? Why or why not?

  In (regular) software I have worked at companies where the gcc option -Wall is used to show all warnings. Then they need to be dealt with. With non-trivial FPGA/ASIC design in Verilog or VHDL there are often many many warnings. Should I worry about all of them? Do you have any specific techniques to suggest? My flow is mainly for FPGAs (Altera and Xilinx in particular), but I assume the same rules would apply to ASIC design, possibly more so due to the inability to change the design after it is built.

• XSLT good choice for web framework?

  I've always thought of XML (and SGML before that) data as the devil's format. I'm of the old database and flat files school. Nonetheless, we are developing a commercially-available web product who's framework is based off of translating/transforming XML data in chains. As we're interviewing for positions as well talking to potential customers, they love the concept of what it will do but are weary of supporting XSLT long-term. One person even called it the proverbial "dead." Dead like COBOL, Unix, and C or dead like Apple Business BASIC? Anyway, I'm curious if building a web framework on XSLT is really not cutting edge enough (oddly) for companies. Are there inherent XSLT implementation problems that make this venture something worth reconsidering?

• Overtime culture slowly creeping in - How do I handle this?

  Our company was one of the very few companies that did not enforce overtime. As such, all my team members promptly worked 40-48 hours a week and everything was good. We hired a few new developers and one of them has positioned himself to be a team lead. He has started working overtime, sending emails in the middle of the night which has come somewhat as a shock for the laid back team. Obviously, the higher ups seem to love him for being the "bad guy" enforcing overtime. Before this goes out of control, what steps do I take to stop this from continuing. I would rather not bring this up with the bosses for the fear of being seen as a whining team member. I am not sure if I should reply to his email outside work hours and encourage him to enforce this culture on our team. Thoughts?

• Wordpress Taxonomy

  I am creating a Wordpress blog (no live link yet because it's still at a planning stage). I want to set up the following tag structure: Category 1: Services Tags: Web design, logo design, print design, etc etc. Category 2: Type of clients Tags: small businesses, large companies So each post will be tagged with one or more tags from Category 1, and one tag from Category 2. However, I heard that using more than one Category per post is a bad idea in terms of SEO? But then, how can I go about it? I don't want any SEO penalties, but I will need to somehow categorize each post using these 2 distinct categories. Should I create some custom taxonomies? That seems like an overkill to me. The solution is probably something rather simple but it just escapes me. I'm not very experienced with taxonomies so I'll appreciate any suggestions.

• What are good ways to guarantee business continuity with a SaaS product?

  For my Bachelor Thesis I am researching how SaaS providers can arrange some sort of business continuity guarantee. You probably know the Source Code Escrow arrangements for 'shrink-wrapped' software. They give customers access to the source code and all applicable documentation whenever the software supplier gets into (financial) trouble. This clearly does not work for SaaS, because customers have no use for just the source code, and customers probably can not afford not being able to login to their CRM system for a couple weeks because the SaaS provider went bankrupt. I am currently researching different methods to solve this problem. Do you know good and practical solutions to solve this continuity problem? Or companies that already offer a good solution? • Rails HABTM Scoping to current subdomain

  I have the following associations: class User < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :brands, :join_table => 'brands_users' has_and_belongs_to_many :companies, :join_table => 'companies_users' end class Brand < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :company has_and_belongs_to_many :users, :join_table => 'brands_users' end class Company < ActiveRecord::Base has_and_belongs_to_many :users, :join_table => 'companies_users' has_many :brands, :order => :name end While editing a user I am using the checkbox list of brands. So that I can assign users 'access' to brands, the brands that show up are only the brands that belong to the current company (defined by the subdomain [using subdomain_fu]). The problem I am running into is that when using the default HABTM functionality and the checkbox list, upon save, Rails removes ALL user-brand associations, then re-adds just the ones for the form I just submitted.. How do I scope that to only remove associations of brands who belong to the current company, defined in the subdomain?

• Is there a way to import or convert vmware player images to run on xen?

  It's fairly popular for companies offering a quick way to test their product to give you a vmware player image. I don't run VMWare though, I run Xen exclusively. Most of these images (and the one I'm interested right this moment particularly) are linux images. Is there a way to use this image with Xen? Obviously, I could setup player long enough to boot the image, then move the data out of the image to a Xen image, but I'm hoping for something easier and quicker than that...preferably that doesn't require setting up a box to run player than can run this image.

• How can I transition from a front-end career to back-end career?

  Hello, In 2004, I received my B.S. in Computer Science using mostly Java for programming. Since then, I have been hired for purely front-end positions in large companies through recruiters, doing primarily HTML/CSS, Javascript/jQuery, and OOP Actionscript 3. While I definitely have respect for the front-end, and have learned much, I feel very unfulfilled and would love to move into back-end for the more complex programming I was doing in school. My target platform of choice is ASP.Net 3.5 (C#). With a resume that has absolutely no .Net or back-end experience, how can I transition into a junior back-end job? I am currently freelancing a .Net e-commerce site, and plan to build a portfolio showcasing some apps (e-commerce mvc, blog, etc), while learning the technology. Is having a Bachelors in CS enough or should I look into getting .Net certified? Is showing course-work still relevant to an employer even though it was from 6 years ago? Thank you

• Database error when deleting entry in my rails app.

  Hi Everyone...again! I have almost everything in my Rails app working, with the exception of detroying entries. I can destroy entries for companies but not kases and people. The following error show when trying to do so: SQLite3::SQLException: no such column: kases_people.kase_id: SELECT * FROM "kases" INNER JOIN "kases_people" ON "kases".id = "kases_people".kase_id WHERE ("kases_people".person_id = 5 ) I suspect this is an error with the party model for the has_many :through associations that I dont fully understand.   I'm currently blessed to be employed at a location where politics are pretty much non-existant and management overhead is nearly nil. As I've only worked at this one location for my entire, lengthy career, I have very little frame of reference outside of an occasional Dilbert comic or offhand comment from others about just how bad office politics and management interference get in the way of getting your code done elsewhere. While I'm not actively looking for a new job, this one point has made me quite reluctant to even look seriously elsewhere. My question is, just how much are politics a way of life in larger companies - in or out of the game industry and how much does it affect your day to day satisfaction?

• Is it good to continue as MFC developer or good to know .NET as well?

  Normally people say MFC is little clumsy. It makes UI developement slightly difficult to maintain since it has lot of auto generated code. It has good architecture (doc/view) but is not transparent like Win32 programming to understand how window program works in the background. So with this situation, is it good to extend the exposure on MFC programming or better to switch to .NET since for faster UI design with ease in maintenance. How globally companies are looking into MFC as a technology for UI developments. Are they comfortable in supporting their developers to continue with MFC or looking for changing their development technology.

• Feasability of reverse engineering some embedded code

  All, My company is in the situation where we are using an embedded control system from another company in another country. We do not have the source code or the schematics to this system, and the manufacturer doesn't want to release them, seemingly at any price or under any terms. We are thus stuck with a 6 month turn around to get even a small modification done, and they can basically charge any amount they want. Legal aspects aside, would it be at all feasible to reverse engineer the embedded code back into C? Do any companies exist that could do this for us? Thank you, Fred

  Say if it's a 10 people project, 2-3 of the original programmer quit after the project has been release a stable version for a while. How to have the code maintainable in this case? My imagination is reviewing the code after the project goes to release version and keep review it afterwards? Maybe split into 2-3 small groups and have each group review part of the code. So at least 3-4 people are familiar with part of code. Does this work? How do companies deal with this issue? Usually how many percentage of time spent on reviewing the code?   I'm sure most people here had to fill at least one time sheet in their life that made their life miserable, hell it's even the worst time taker ever especially after you have to fill it in hurry. I will be developing some simple TimeSheet application for a small company of 50 people (non programming related, it's actually 4 companies working together) and would like it to be user friendly and as less disturbing as possible. So what in your opinion makes it a good timesheet (lack of it doesn't count :p), what data it should store? Should be only hours per day with possibility to choose project, company and simple overview what you have worked on like: Day 1, 3:00, 'Company 1', 'Project5', 'Name', Short Overview Day 1, 5:00, 'Company 2', 'Project6', 'Name', Short Overview Or should it gather more data? Would it be realy bad if it were an WinForms application considering that I don't know ASP.NET or any other web based language? I would be deploying it using ClickOnce or so.

  Hi Everyone, I have a kase model which I am using a simple search form in. The problem I am having is some kases are linked to companies through a company model, and people through a people model. So far, all I really know about it is that it is written in C++, uses an SQL database and has a web API which is used by a browser client written using GWT.
