• ubuntu 12.04 LTS hangs on boot when external monitor is connected

  I have a problem with my fresh installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Dell M4600: nVidia quadro 2000M i7-2860 16GB ram 128GB SSD Dell/Samsung 750GB HDD IPS RGB laptop display When it is connected via DP++ to the external Dell U2311H monitor, it hangs on boot or when wakening from suspend. If I detach the DP cable it boots normally. I have tried all combinations that I have found, as adding to grub: "no splash", "boot=pci", "acpi=off", etc... I have also changed in nVidia X settings that external monitor is the primary one and also tried to delete monitor.xml file. There is no change it hangs each time after grub. It starts to load daemons then both screens are blank and then completely hangs with beep sound. What I discovered is if I detach the cable and wait for about 2 sec after grub starts booting and then physically connect DP cable while the Ubuntu is still booting everything works normally and I have a picture on my external screen while the laptop screen is off, just as I wanted. Do you maybe know how to solve this issue? Thank You.

• Cause of lost partition replaced by 2 Raw partitions

  Hi, I had a curious problem over the weekend... My 500gb WD hard drive all of a sudden could not be discovered by xp, then when I plugged in again via USB it was being discovered as 2 separate Raw partitions that were asking to be formatted. I have never modified partitions on this drive before. I was scratching my head for about this for 20mins or so when my second 1TB external hard drive did the exact same thing(with the same sized raw partitions as the 500gb). I have since recovered the original partitions and data using Testdisk . I am more curious on the cause.... I suspect this could be a virus, however my machine hadn’t been online in a few days and AVG didn’t detect anything. Has anyone seen this before?

• Slow writing HDD speed, Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit, Thinkpad T520i

  It seems that (but I'm not completely sure), that when I'm copying files from gigabit network to HDD, I can't use full potential of the network which in my case is about 60 MB/s, because HDD writing is so slow like lower than 10 MB/s, and also it's slowing down the whole system which becomes pretty much unresponsive, almost impossible to work with. Copying files to samba share residing at Ubuntu machine, connected to share from Windows 7, I'm completely sure my network equipment is OK, and there's no CPU intensive process on Ubuntu except smbd getting about 10-20% from time to time which I think is OK. Something here is burried deep I think, maybe even in kernel. Already tried to switch from AHCI to compatibility mode, and turning acpi on and off - nothing helped. So it's like HDD buffer is full and emptying slowly while machine is sluggish, load is about 3 to 4. Somebody experienced the similar problems? Some help on troubleshooting process and identifying the cause would be helpful too :) Thanks!

• Cannot copy anything onto WD Elements 1TB External USB HDD

  I have a Western Digital 1023 Elements 1TB External USB HDD. Recently, it has started an unusual problem. I cannot copy any file of any size on to that 1TB hard-drive, eventhough it has more than 400 GB free (out of 931GB actual size). I tried copying movies from one friends laptop, which did not work. I also tried another desktop to copy some study material e-books (in PDF), which also did not work. I get same CRC error when I try to copy anything from a computer's hard-drive onto this WD 1TB hard-drive. Vice-versa it's working. I mean, I can copy any file from the USB HDD onto local machine's HDD on any computer. It's like one-way traffic. This HDD is only 1 year old. What are my options ? Any suggestions ? • iTunes + External Hard Drive problem

  Okay, so I've always stored my music on my external hard drive and run it from there with iTunes. Recently, however, it's being a little awkward. I think it was because I accidentally tried to run a song off my hard drive when it wasn't plugged in and, as would be expected, it said it couldn't find it. So I plug the hard drive in, locate the file and off it goes. But now it won't find any of the files... When I go to the "Get Info" page on the right click menu on a song I notice it has prepended file://localhost/ to everything, so my paths look like this: "file://localhost/E:/Sam/Media/Music/[song name]" I went into the iTunes Music Library.xml file and did a search and replace for file://localhost/ and replaced it with nothing and tried opening iTunes again and it just added file://localhost/ to every file again! Anyone have any idea why it does this and how to fix it without reimporting my library?

  I am running out of space in the /var partition. I have plenty of space in my /home partition. How do I shrink the /home partition to make more space for the /var partition? I have read some blogs that say to use the GParted Live CD. As a new user, I'm not quite sure if this is the ideal route. What is the best way to create more space for /var ? • Machine check error while booting from USB

  I put the last Ubuntu iso on my USB stick using UNetBootin, after formatting it to fat32. I've already done that before with other operating systems and it worked. I can't actually boot Ubuntu from USB since I get a black screen with the error "Machine check error" on top the an automatic reboot happens. The error appears right after the boot, I can't see anything else before. I'm using my ASUS K53SV latop. Does anybody know how to solve this?

• ACPI=OFF in Ubuntu 11.10

  When I tried to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 the system froze, so I've been playing around with a couple other linux builds (Fedora, Mint, and Puppy) the last couple days and I keep coming around to the same problem: a lockup during boot; each build referencing a kernel error. On another board someone suggested booting with a boot up line of "ACPI = off". It works with other OS', but I'm not sure where to put this command. Can anyone 'enlighten' me, please?

  I bought a brand new computer yesterday (Toshiba Satellite Pro L770-10T : Intel Core i5 2410M, 2,3 GHz, 4096 Mo RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 525M) that simply won't boot any livecd I tried. I am using debian/ubuntu for a long time but this is the first time I can't boot a livecd Here is what I tried without success: Ubuntu 11.04 i386 and x64 both desktop and alternate Debian stable livecd old working ubuntu livecds including 8.x 9.x 10.x On ubuntu-10.04.2-desktop-i386.iso I had a kernel panic On 11.04 packages were corrupted although md5 and sha1 were correct I must add that those were burned on different cds CD-R or CD-RW. • Problems after installing Ubuntu LiveUSB on my 2nd HD

  I decided to create a Ubuntu USB installer using the Universal USB Installer, selecting a Ubuntu 12.10 ISO. I selected my D: drive, my NON-windows7 carrying drive as install. After this I Re-booted my system and my PC began to Run the Ubuntu Boot-startscreen every time I power up the machine, giving errors like this: Root=Unknown I used my girlfriend's laptop to create, on the exact same way, a real! USB Ubuntu installer. Booting from that USB, picking the option Run Ubuntu from this USB I get the following error: http://postimage.org/image/63qkv98c1/ Let's try installing it from that USB to a Hard-Disk: http://postimage.org/image/usqbwymfx/ As I said: I do not have the Option to pick my Boot-section, at this very moment I can only access to the Ubuntu installation and nothing else. • Server asks for username and password on boot

  I installed the Ubuntu server 12.04 easily, however, when I boot it asks for a username and password. I don't know my previous username or password from Windows XP. I am currently trying to install any version of Ubuntu I have in my arsenal to recover the PC, but all intents so far have failed. They worked on other computers but not on this one, the error I get is No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! I have tried all the solutions found on this site but to no avail. I don't have a Windows Ultimate boot disk and I'm out of CDs to burn. I can, however, make live USBs. Any Suggestions?

• Unable to boot from USB boot drive for AMD Athlon 64

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 13.04 ISO for AMD64 Athlon processor using USB drive (8GB). I did create a bootable USB using the USB installer from Win7 intel 32bit processor (followed steps from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows). This USB is unable to boot on my AMD64 bit processor. The bios is able to detect the USB and once I change the boot order to USB and save exit from bios, I get a message saying "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS CONTINUE" and unable to proceed further. However earlier to this I have successfully installed Ubuntu 13.04 on to my laptop which has Intel 32 bit core i5 processor with the same procedure but my desktop which has AMD64 is failing. I also tried to create the USB installer on my desktop which has the AMD64 bit processor and tried booting which also resulted in the same error. (My desktop currently has Win XP) Please help as I have run out of options. thanks, Nagarjun

• Ubuntu dual boot OS crashed my computer. Now my computer won't boot. Please Help

  I've just tried to install ubuntu 12.04 dual boot OS with Windows 7 and it finished installing in ubuntu. However, it said that the bootloader "grub.." failed to install. The same exact problem here I receive the error 'grub-install /dev/sda failed' while attempting to install Ubuntu as the computer's only OS. . When I tried to restart my computer, it went to the hp screen since my computer is a dv6 hp laptop and then it goes into this black screen with no words or any buttons will work. There is just a blinking underscore that seems like it'll allow me to type but makes error sounds when I type. Is this because I possibly partitioned my memory incorrectly? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm very desperate. ANY HELP would be great. Thanks.

• I have reinstalled 12.04 and there is no dual boot option

  Tonight, I have reinstalled Ubuntu 12.4on Win XP pro machine for a 3rd time. (Uninstalled in between.) Oddly enough, this machine had a dual boot between xp pro & ubuntu for several months before we decided to reinstall everything (because of windows). Have you had any problems with the reboot on XP Pro SP3 with all updates & microsoft essentials? I am not getting a choice of which operating system to boot into, it just boots into windows & does not acknowledge ubuntu!

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit side by side with my previous 11.10 32-bit. As everything is working correctly, I want to eliminate the old partition. According to update-grub: Found Ubuntu 11.10 (11.10) on /dev/sda1 But according to GParted, /dev/sda1 is the boot partition! So, how can I discover which partition should be the boot partition for 12.04? Can I safely eliminate the /dev/sda1? Also, GParted gives /dev/sda5 as file system unknown, it's 2.93Gib and might be the swap partition (just guessing).

• USB key will only be mounted by gparted [?]

  Hi, When I insert by usb key nothing happens (i.e. the drive is not visible). I can mount the USB drive from gparted though (and then it's suddenly recognized). It's not particular to any USB key. This only happens on my laptop (on the desktop the same key will be mounted upon plugging it in without any problems). Finally, the key is formated as fat32 and dosfstools and mtools are installed (through gparted claims otherwise). what's the catch? EDIT Also, gparted offers me the option to mount the key on "/" : shouldn't that be "/media" (or has this changed ?)

  hi there, I have a problem on my server as below.. On my server i configured a raid array of 3 hard disks, in my c drive their is a web applications running on Apache Tomcat server. Now because of shortage of storage i entered a new hard disk to the server which is not a part of that raid array. Now through my web application i upload some images to new hard drive and file uploaded successfully but when through that same application, i try to retrieve those images and show on a web site i does not recognize that and dose not give any error. i try to access that drive with absolute path but it not works. • Windows 7 stopped booting

  I have a laptop which after shutdown it stopped booting. I tried repair, safe mode, and even start with Windows 7 Installation. The screen just goes blank with a mouse pointer that I can move around. I removed the harddrive from the laptop and connected it to my desktop using an External HD casing. The computer recognizes the disk, but it seems like it can't read it. If I go to My Computer it shows up, but it doesn't display usage information. When I double click on the drive it sits there as if it was loading something and eventually shows "G:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect." Disk Management and Diskpart also take forever to load and when it does it shows the drive. My question, do you think this is a hardware problem or some corrupted sector? How can I try to fix the drive without formatting it? Thanks...

  I'm running Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit. Everything has been working for several weeks. Yesterday, when I tried to boot up my computer, after the BIOS screen flashes I reach a screen with a black background that reads at the top: GNU GRUB version1.99-21ubuntu3.4 Then there is a box in which I can select from the following lines: Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) Linux Mint 13 MATE 64-bit, 3.2.0-31-generic (/dev/sdb2) -- recovery mode Previous Linux versions Memory test (memtest86+) Memory test (memtest86+, serial console 115200) At the bottom it reads: Use the ? and ? keys to select which entry is highlighed. Press enter to boot the selected OS, 'e' to edit the commands before booting or 'c' for a command-line. I have no idea why it started doing this and, worse, I have no idea how to get out of here. No matter which option I select, I can't get it to boot the OS. If I select either of the first two, it reboots to splash the BIOS and then I'm right back where I started. If I choose "Previous Linux versions" I get essentially the same screen with only two choices (which are the same as the first two choices listed above, Linux 13 MATE and the recovery mode). Again, choosing either one of those results in a reboot. If I try to run either of the memtest options, it reads: error: unknown command 'linux16', Press any key to continue... • How to fix GRUB on dualboot with Windows7 and Ubuntu?

  I am a relatively recent user of Linux. I had several releases of Ubuntu installed on my laptop working in dual-boot and never had any issues. Recently, I installed openSUSE because I thought it would be necessary for an assignment at my university. It turns out it wasn't so I returned to Ubuntu and decided to burn the new .iso to a CD and install it. The problem is that during installation process I almost for sure messed up with the partitions and now, whenever I tried to load Windows 7, it will tells me that a required device is inaccessible. So, I reinstalled Ubuntu again and now all I get is that I am redirected to the GRUB menu without any warnings. I tried creating a Windows Recovery Disk but it gives me Unexpected I/O error. I suspect it is because it was downloaded from the Internet and maybe some files weren't there. I tried everything without success, so I decided to ask here, in the hope I can receive some help and also learn how to help others with it in the future. Here it is my boot info summary: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1344990/ Also, I might add, that on the boot-repair advanced options, the box repair Windows boot files is "locked", so I can't check it. EDIT: Apparentely, the box is locked, because, from what I understood after reading the boot-repair information, everything is fine with my windows boot-files... I still need some guidance though

• Ubuntu 11.10 error message at startup after clean install

  I have just installed Ubuntu 11.10 (did a fresh install and erased 11.04). After the reboot it appeared a log on the screen, saying all the starting services on the left and [OK] on the right. However, two particular entries, starting automatic crash report installation and starting restore sound card(s') mixer state(s) were set on [FAIL]. After that, Ubuntu did not boot. Is there any way that i can skip those two entries and boot Ubuntu?
