• Should all presentational images be defined in CSS?

  I've been learning (X)HTML & CSS recently, and one of the main principles is that HTML is for structure and CSS for presentation. With that in mind, it seems to me that a fair number of images on most sites are just for presentation and as such should be in the CSS (with a div or span to hold them in the HTML) - for example logos, header images, backgrounds. However, while the examples in my book put some images in CSS, they are still often in the HTML. (I'm just talking about 'presentational' images, not 'structural' ones which are a key part of the content, for example photos in a photo site). Should all such images be in CSS? Or are there technical or logical reasons to keep them in the HTML? Thanks, Grant

• Ideas for band site, which technology to use?

  I am attempting to design and build a website for my friends band. There is minimal content to be included such as bio,news,enbemdded Audio/Visual material. My web dev expertise is average. I'm basicaly looking for inspiration, I was edging towards embedding a silverlight deepzoom xap object to add some visual stimulation, perhaps by featuring a high res photo of the bandshardware/equipment which zooms when mouseover occurs. Does anyone have any cool ideas for a central feature for this site, and which way to approact it in terms of technique (js,css,silverlight etc) If anyone has any immediate ideas which they think would be cool then I am eager to hear them! Also if anyone can link me to any cool band sites they have come across recently I would be greatful,nothing too complicated though please I will be doing all the work myself. Im want the site to be simple but have a certain wow factor!

• Signed_request lost in ASP.NET session, confusing my website

  I have an ASP.NET MVC 3 website which is available both from a specific public url, and I'm also making be available as a Facebook App. Inside my website logic, in some places I have to determine whether the current request is from the Facebook-app, or from the public website, because I want to display content based on this environment. So, for eg. if the user is using my site as a facebook-app, then I want to display a picture, and if the user is using my site normally, then I don't wanna display a picture. To determine whether I'm from a Facebook app, I check the "signed_request" in the HttpContext.Request, and store it in the HttpSession to be available for my other actions, not just for that action (url) which is defined for my Facebook app. So when a child-action is executed, I can determine based on the Session, that the website is used as a FB-app or not. The problem happens, when the Session times out, because then althought the logic is still running inside Facebook, my logic thinks it's not inside Facebook. Any advice?

• Added a Facebook badge, throwing off footer placement

  Added the for the facebook badge to the site and now it's thrown my placement for the footer off .. it's working fine in Chrome, but IE, FFox and Opera all experiencing problems... • Delayed Jobs is not finding Records and failing..

  In my app, delayed jobs isn't running automatically on my server anymore. It used to.. When I manually ssh in, and perform rake jobs:work I return this : * Starting job worker host:ip-(censored) pid:21458 * [Worker(host:ip-(censored) pid:21458)] acquired lock on PhotoJob * [JOB] host:ip-(censored) pid:21458 failed with ActiveRecord::RecordNotFound: Couldn't find Photo with ID=9237 - 4 failed attempts This returns roughly 20 times over for what I think is several jobs. Then I get a few of these: [Worker(host:ip-(censored) pid:21458)] failed to acquire exclusive lock for PhotoJob And then finally one of these : 12 jobs processed at 73.6807 j/s, 12 failed ... Any ideas what I should be mulling over? Thanks so much!

• Edit Mode Delete Spinner Icon for Specific TableView Rows

  I have a grouped tableview. Each section has three rows. I need to be able to delete one section at a time. Using the standard edit mode, I can make it work. However, the delete icon shows up to the left of each cell, not just the first row in each section. Is there a way to suppress the little spinner icon for all rows except the first? I am hoping there is an easy way to do this without subclassing. Thanks for your help. • In your opinion what web technology would be best suited for building dropdown menus?

  What I need is a slide menu that is activated by one click. The menu then appears and doesn't disappear until user clicks any where else on the current page. I don't require any effects but need something reliable that I can style with ease, put a thumbnail of a photo inside change dimensions, add mouse over effects etc. I've done a several searches on google and quite a lot of options are coming up and I'm not too sure which would be best for me. I've seen some people suggestion html + css3 and others suggest jquery. Does any of these options have a benefit over the other? I would appreciate your opinions and maybe some links thanks.

• can you use jquery lazyload on all images (not just ones out of view)

  i have a webpage with a lot of images (photo album). I am using lazyloading jquery plugin which is great to only load the images out of browser view when i scroll down. The one issue i have is that i want the loading icon to show up first on images loading IN the current view as well as some of them are big images and they show up with that bad browser "image not loaded yet" icon until they download. I don't see any property on this plugin to support this for both in view and for scrolling. does anyone know if this is possible?

• What's the *right* way to handle a POST in FP?

  I'm just getting started with FP and I'm using Scala, which may not be the best way, since I can always fall back to an imperative style if the going gets tough. I'd just rather not. I've got a very specific question that points to a broader lacuna in my understanding of FP. When a web application is processing a GET request, the user wants information that already exists on the web-site. The application only has to process and format the data in some way. The FB way is clear. When a web application is processing a POST request, the user wants change the information held on the site. True, the information is not typically held in application variables, it's in a database or a flat-file, but still, I get the feeling I'm not grokking FP properly. Is there a pattern for handling updates to static data in an FP language? My vague picture of this is that the application is handed the request and the then-current site state. The application does its thing and returns the new site-state. If the current site-state hasn't changed since the application started, the new state becomes the current state and the reply is sent back to the browser (this is my dim image of Clojure's style); if the current state has been changed (by another thread, well, something else happens ...

• How can I compress jpeg images in Java without losing any metadata in that image?

  I want compress jpeg files using Java. I do it like this: Read the image as BufferedImage Write the image to another file with compression rate. OK, that seems easy, but I find the ICC color profile and the EXIF information are gone in the new file and the DPI of the image is dropped from 240 to 72. It looks different from the origin image. I use a tool like preview in OS X. It can perfectly change the quality of the image without affecting other information. Can I done this in Java? At least keep the ICC color profile and let the image color look the same as the origin photo?

• Image visualization with canvas. How to resize them?

  I'm building a website photo gallery for a friend. Images are loaded as simple DOM image objects (<img src="" />), and the size of these images is based on the browser size. So I resize them with CSS. This isn't an optimal solution since CSS resizing seems to change the quality of the image and pixelate it quite a bit. I was thinking of rendering the image with canvas and then resize it with that so that the quality remains effective, but I can't find any info about this online. Any ideas?

A post can have multiple photos and I am successfully only displaying the first photo in the photos table in the projects show view for each post. • With google maps, can you use google's own popup windows?

  I've implemented a google map with points and stuff that uses an address that the user inputs. When you click a point, the popup bubble appears with the name and address in. Often this name and address is a prominent location, as it's used for meetings and things, such as a university. If you google the address yourself on maps.google.co.uk then you get google's own popup bubble, which often has a photo, information, opening hours, links to directions, reviews, etc. etc. I am wondering if there's a way to use that popup dialog instead of my own, where it is available. I can't see anything in the API to do this. I'm using V2 as we support IE6 in a lot of our users, but I've been told recently I can upgrade to V3 should I need functionality from it. Any ideas?

• JQuery div tag has children in FireFox but not Chrome

  I am using JQuery ajax to load images from a url, display them, and then place a button on top of each image. The code works in firefox, but in chrome, the div parent "photos" that should have all the children(one child div "photo" for each image received from the url) is 0. I have tried read() and load(), but nothing seems to work. If I run alert($('#photos').children().size()); in the Chrome console it returns the children. But at execution it returns 0. • mysql select multiple rows in join

  Hi-- I have a simple mySQL problem-- I have two tables, one is a user's table, and one is a photos table (each user can upload multiple photos). I'd like to write a query to join these tables, so I can pull all photos associated with a user (up to a certain limit). However, when I do something obvious like this: SELECT *.a, *.b FROM user_table a JOIN photos_table b ON a.id = b.userid it returns a.id, a.name, a.email, a.address, b.id, b.userid, b.photo_title, b.location but it only returns a single photo. Is there a way to return something like: a.id, a.name, a.email, a.address, b.id, b.userid, b.photo_title, b.location, b.id2, b.photo_title2, b.location2 etc. . . for a given LIMIT of photos?
