• Using Queries with Coherence Write-Behind Caches

- by jpurdy
Applications that use write-behind caching and wish to query the logical entity set have the option of querying the NamedCache itself or querying the database. In the former case, no particular restrictions exist beyond the limitations intrinsic to the Coherence query engine itself. In the latter case, queries may see partially committed transactions (e.g. with a parent-child relationship, the version of the parent may be different than the version of the child objects) and/or significant version skew (the query may see the current version of one object and a far older version of another object). This is consistent with "read committed" semantics, but the read skew may be far greater than would ever occur in a non-cached environment. As is usually the case, the application developer may choose to accept these limitations (with the hope that they are sufficiently infrequent), or they may choose to validate the reads (perhaps via a version flag on the objects). This also applies to situations where a third party application (such as a reporting tool) is querying the database. In many cases, the database may only be in a consistent state after the Coherence cluster has been halted.

• Javascript storing data

- by user985482
Hi I am a beginner web developer and am trying to build the interface of a simple e-commerce site as a personal project. The site has multiple pages with checkboxes. When someone checks an element it retrives the price of the element and stores it in a variable. But when I go to the next page and click on new checkboxes products the variable automaticly resets to its original state. How can I save the value of that variable in Javascript? This is the code I've writen using sessionStorage but it still dosen't work when I move to next page the value is reseted. How can I wright this code so that i dosen't reset on each page change. All pages on my website use the same script. $(document).ready(function(){ var total = 0; $('input.check').click(function(){ if($(this).attr('checked')){ var check = parseInt($(this).parent().children('span').text().substr(1 , 3)); total+=check; sessionStorage.var_name=0 + total; alert(sessionStorage.var_name); }else{ var uncheck = parseInt($(this).parent().children('span').text().substr(1 , 3)); total-=uncheck; } })

• Object desing problem for simple school application

- by Aragornx
I want to create simple school application that provides grades, notes, presence, etc. for students, teachers and parents. I'm trying to design objects for this problem and I'm little bit confused - because I'm not very experienced in class designing. Some of my present objects are : class PersonalData() { private String name; private String surename; private Calendar dateOfBirth; [...] } class Person { private PersonalData personalData; } class User extends Person { private String login; private char[] password; } class Student extends Person { private ArrayList<Counselor> counselors = new ArrayList<>(); } class Counselor extends Person { private ArrayList<Student> children = new ArrayList<>(); } class Teacher extends Person { private ArrayList<ChoolClass> schoolClasses = new ArrayList<>(); private ArrayList<Subject> subjects = new ArrayList<>(); } This is of course a general idea. But I'm sure it's not the best way. For example I want that one person could be a Teacher and also a Parent(Counselor) and present approach makes me to have two Person objects. I want that user after successful logging in get all roles that it has (Student or Teacher or (Teacher & Parent) ). I think I should make and use some interfaces but I'm not sure how to do this right. Maybe like this: interface Role { } interface TeacherRole implements Role { void addGrade( Student student, Grade grade, [...] ); } class Teacher implements TeacherRole { private Person person; [...] } class User extends Person{ ArrayList<Role> roles = new ArrayList<>(); } Please if anyone could help me to make this right or maybe just point me to some literature/article that covers practical objects design.

• Installing datacommons from sunlight

- by Newben
I know strictly nothing from python and I am installing datacommons from the sunlightlabs. So I followed step by step the README.md https://github.com/sunlightlabs/datacommons First, it is said in the doc to add to the virtualenv dc_data, dc_matcchbox but I didn't find them. But I went to the final step to run ./manage.py runserver so I had the following message : (datacommons)newben@newben-VirtualBox:~/share-ubuntu/sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3$ ./manage.py runserver fatal: Not a git repository (or any parent up to mount parent /home/mbenchoufi) Stopping at filesystem boundary (GIT_DISCOVERY_ACROSS_FILESYSTEM not set). Error: Can't find the file 'settings.py' in the directory containing './manage.py'. It appears you've customized things. You'll have to run django-admin.py, passing it your settings module. (If the file settings.py does indeed exist, it's causing an ImportError somehow.) In the 'sunlightlabs-datacommons-e3ff1a3' folder, I downloaded and put the files from github. By the way I didin't understand how to deal with the settings file. Could someone help me understand how to install datacommons ?

• Movement on the X an Z axis are combined?

- by Magicaxis
This is probably a stupid question, but I'm trying to simply move a 3D object up, down, left, and right (Not forward or backward). The Y axis works fine, but when I increment the object's X position, the object moves BOTH right and backwards! when I decrement X, left and forwards! setPosition(getPosition().X + 2/*times deltatime*/, getPosition().Y, getPosition().Z); I was astonished that XNA doesnt have its own setPosition function, so I made a parent class for all objects with a setPosition and Draw function. Setposition simply edits a variable "mPosition" and passes it to the common draw function: // Copy any parent transforms. Matrix[] transforms = new Matrix[block.Bones.Count]; block.CopyAbsoluteBoneTransformsTo(transforms); // Draw the model. A model can have multiple meshes, so loop. foreach (ModelMesh mesh in block.Meshes) { // This is where the mesh orientation is set, as well // as our camera and projection. foreach (BasicEffect effect in mesh.Effects) { effect.EnableDefaultLighting(); effect.World = transforms[mesh.ParentBone.Index] * Matrix.CreateRotationY(MathHelper.ToRadians(mOrientation.Y)) * Matrix.CreateTranslation(mPosition); effect.View = game1.getView(); effect.Projection = game1.getProjection(); } // Draw the mesh, using the effects set above. mesh.Draw(); } I tried to work it out by attempting to increment and decrement the Z axis, but nothing happens?! So using the X axis changes the objects x and z axis', but changing the Z does nothing. Great. So how do I seperate the X and Z axis movement?

• Best approach for tracking dependent state

- by Pace
Let's pretend I work on a project tracking application. The application is a database backed, server hosted, web application. In this application there are Projects which have many Activities which have many Tasks. A Task has two date fields an originalDueDate and a projectedDueDate. In addition, there are dynamic fields on the Activities and the Projects which indicate whether the Activity or Project is behind schedule based on the projected due dates of the child tasks and various other variables such as remaining buffer time, etc. There are a number of things that can cause the projectedDueDate to change. For example, an employee working on the project may (via a server request) enter in a shipping delay. Alternatively, a site may (via a server request) enter in an unexpected closure. When any of these things occur I need to not only update the projectedDueDate of the Task but also trigger the corresponding Project and Activity to update as well. What is the best way to do this? I've thought of the observer pattern but I don't keep a single copy of all these objects in memory. When a request comes in, I query the Task in from the database, at that point there is no associated Activity in memory that would be a listener. I could remove the ability to query for Tasks and force the application to query first by Project, then by Activity (in context of Project), then by task (in context of Activity) adding the observer relationships at each step but I'm not sure if that is the best way. I could setup a database event listening system so when a Task modified event is dispatched I have a handler which queries for the Activity at that point. I could simply setup a two-way relationship between Task and Activity so that the Task knows about the parent Activity and when the Task updates his state the Task grabs his parent and updates state. Right now I'm stuck considering all the options and am wondering if any single approach (doesn't have to be a listed approach) is jumping out at others as the best approach.

• Templated << friend not working when in interrelationship with other templated union types

- by Dwight
While working on my basic vector library, I've been trying to use a nice syntax for swizzle-based printing. The problem occurs when attempting to print a swizzle of a different dimension than the vector in question. In GCC 4.0, I originally had the friend << overloaded functions (with a body, even though it duplicated code) for every dimension in each vector, which caused the code to work, even if the non-native dimension code never actually was called. This failed in GCC 4.2. I recently realized (silly me) that only the function declaration was needed, not the body of the code, so I did that. Now I get the same warning on both GCC 4.0 and 4.2: LINE 50 warning: friend declaration 'std::ostream& operator<<(std::ostream&, const VECTOR3<TYPE>&)' declares a non-template function Plus the five identical warnings more for the other function declarations. The below example code shows off exactly what's going on and has all code necessary to reproduce the problem. #include <iostream> // cout, endl #include <sstream> // ostream, ostringstream, string using std::cout; using std::endl; using std::string; using std::ostream; // Predefines template <typename TYPE> union VECTOR2; template <typename TYPE> union VECTOR3; template <typename TYPE> union VECTOR4; typedef VECTOR2<float> vec2; typedef VECTOR3<float> vec3; typedef VECTOR4<float> vec4; template <typename TYPE> union VECTOR2 { private: struct { TYPE x, y; } v; struct s1 { protected: TYPE x, y; }; struct s2 { protected: TYPE x, y; }; struct s3 { protected: TYPE x, y; }; struct s4 { protected: TYPE x, y; }; struct X : s1 { operator TYPE() const { return s1::x; } }; struct XX : s2 { operator VECTOR2<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR2<TYPE>(s2::x, s2::x); } }; struct XXX : s3 { operator VECTOR3<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR3<TYPE>(s3::x, s3::x, s3::x); } }; struct XXXX : s4 { operator VECTOR4<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR4<TYPE>(s4::x, s4::x, s4::x, s4::x); } }; public: VECTOR2() {} VECTOR2(const TYPE& x, const TYPE& y) { v.x = x; v.y = y; } X x; XX xx; XXX xxx; XXXX xxxx; // Overload for cout friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR2<TYPE>& toString) { os << "(" << toString.v.x << ", " << toString.v.y << ")"; return os; } friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR3<TYPE>& toString); friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR4<TYPE>& toString); }; template <typename TYPE> union VECTOR3 { private: struct { TYPE x, y, z; } v; struct s1 { protected: TYPE x, y, z; }; struct s2 { protected: TYPE x, y, z; }; struct s3 { protected: TYPE x, y, z; }; struct s4 { protected: TYPE x, y, z; }; struct X : s1 { operator TYPE() const { return s1::x; } }; struct XX : s2 { operator VECTOR2<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR2<TYPE>(s2::x, s2::x); } }; struct XXX : s3 { operator VECTOR3<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR3<TYPE>(s3::x, s3::x, s3::x); } }; struct XXXX : s4 { operator VECTOR4<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR4<TYPE>(s4::x, s4::x, s4::x, s4::x); } }; public: VECTOR3() {} VECTOR3(const TYPE& x, const TYPE& y, const TYPE& z) { v.x = x; v.y = y; v.z = z; } X x; XX xx; XXX xxx; XXXX xxxx; // Overload for cout friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR3<TYPE>& toString) { os << "(" << toString.v.x << ", " << toString.v.y << ", " << toString.v.z << ")"; return os; } friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR2<TYPE>& toString); friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR4<TYPE>& toString); }; template <typename TYPE> union VECTOR4 { private: struct { TYPE x, y, z, w; } v; struct s1 { protected: TYPE x, y, z, w; }; struct s2 { protected: TYPE x, y, z, w; }; struct s3 { protected: TYPE x, y, z, w; }; struct s4 { protected: TYPE x, y, z, w; }; struct X : s1 { operator TYPE() const { return s1::x; } }; struct XX : s2 { operator VECTOR2<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR2<TYPE>(s2::x, s2::x); } }; struct XXX : s3 { operator VECTOR3<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR3<TYPE>(s3::x, s3::x, s3::x); } }; struct XXXX : s4 { operator VECTOR4<TYPE>() const { return VECTOR4<TYPE>(s4::x, s4::x, s4::x, s4::x); } }; public: VECTOR4() {} VECTOR4(const TYPE& x, const TYPE& y, const TYPE& z, const TYPE& w) { v.x = x; v.y = y; v.z = z; v.w = w; } X x; XX xx; XXX xxx; XXXX xxxx; // Overload for cout friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR4& toString) { os << "(" << toString.v.x << ", " << toString.v.y << ", " << toString.v.z << ", " << toString.v.w << ")"; return os; } friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR2<TYPE>& toString); friend ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR3<TYPE>& toString); }; // Test code int main (int argc, char * const argv[]) { vec2 my2dVector(1, 2); cout << my2dVector.x << endl; cout << my2dVector.xx << endl; cout << my2dVector.xxx << endl; cout << my2dVector.xxxx << endl; vec3 my3dVector(3, 4, 5); cout << my3dVector.x << endl; cout << my3dVector.xx << endl; cout << my3dVector.xxx << endl; cout << my3dVector.xxxx << endl; vec4 my4dVector(6, 7, 8, 9); cout << my4dVector.x << endl; cout << my4dVector.xx << endl; cout << my4dVector.xxx << endl; cout << my4dVector.xxxx << endl; return 0; } The code WORKS and produces the correct output, but I prefer warning free code whenever possible. I followed the advice the compiler gave me (summarized here and described by forums and StackOverflow as the answer to this warning) and added the two things that supposedly tells the compiler what's going on. That is, I added the function definitions as non-friends after the predefinitions of the templated unions: template <typename TYPE> ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR2<TYPE>& toString); template <typename TYPE> ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR3<TYPE>& toString); template <typename TYPE> ostream& operator<<(ostream& os, const VECTOR4<TYPE>& toString); And, to each friend function that causes the issue, I added the <> after the function name, such as for VECTOR2's case: friend ostream& operator<< <> (ostream& os, const VECTOR3<TYPE>& toString); friend ostream& operator<< <> (ostream& os, const VECTOR4<TYPE>& toString); However, doing so leads to errors, such as: LINE 139: error: no match for 'operator<<' in 'std::cout << my2dVector.VECTOR2<float>::xxx' What's going on? Is it something related to how these templated union class-like structures are interrelated, or is it due to the unions themselves? Update After rethinking the issues involved and listening to the various suggestions of Potatoswatter, I found the final solution. Unlike just about every single cout overload example on the internet, I don't need access to the private member information, but can use the public interface to do what I wish. So, I make a non-friend overload functions that are inline for the swizzle parts that call the real friend overload functions. This bypasses the issues the compiler has with templated friend functions. I've added to the latest version of my project. It now works on both versions of GCC I tried with no warnings. The code in question looks like this: template <typename SWIZZLE> inline typename EnableIf< Is2D< typename SWIZZLE::PARENT >, ostream >::type& operator<<(ostream& os, const SWIZZLE& printVector) { os << (typename SWIZZLE::PARENT(printVector)); return os; } template <typename SWIZZLE> inline typename EnableIf< Is3D< typename SWIZZLE::PARENT >, ostream >::type& operator<<(ostream& os, const SWIZZLE& printVector) { os << (typename SWIZZLE::PARENT(printVector)); return os; } template <typename SWIZZLE> inline typename EnableIf< Is4D< typename SWIZZLE::PARENT >, ostream >::type& operator<<(ostream& os, const SWIZZLE& printVector) { os << (typename SWIZZLE::PARENT(printVector)); return os; }

• Bluetooth DUN Tethering fails

- by tacone
I have an HTC Desire HD, with Android Froyo (2.2) and PDANet installed. I am using Ubuntu 10.10. I cannot tether it over Bluetooth either with Network Manager or BlueMan. (note, I installed Blueman only after failing with NetWork manager, and I even tried the last version from the PPA). With both my device is discovered, paired, setup. But connecting always fail. Network manager says it cannot get the details of my device Blueman says Connection Refused (111) Here are some relevant entries from syslog. • Logical Domain Modeling Made Simple

- by Knut Vatsendvik
How can logical domain modeling be made simple and collaborative? Many non-technical end-users, managers and business domain experts find it difficult to understand the visual models offered by many UML tools. This creates trouble in capturing and verifying the information that goes into a logical domain model. The tools are also too advanced and complex for a non-technical user to learn and use. We have therefore, in our current project, ended up with using Confluence as tool for designing the logical domain model with the help of a few very useful plugins. Big thanks to Ole Nymoen and Per Spilling for their expertise in this field that made this posting possible. Confluence Plugins Here is a list of Confluence plugins used in this solution. Install these before trying out the macros used below. Plugin Description Copy Space Allows a space administrator to copy a space, including the pages within the space Metadata Supports adding metadata to Wiki pages Label Manages labeling of pages Linking Contains macros for linking to templates, the dashboard and other Table Enhances the table capability in Confluence Creating a Confluence Space First we need to create a new confluence space for the domain model. Click the link Create a Space located below the list of spaces on the Dashboard. Please contact your Confluence administrator is you do not have permissions to do this. For illustrative purpose all attributes and entities in this posting are based on my imaginary project manager domain model. When a logical domain model is good enough for being implemented, do a copy of the Confluence Space (see Copy Space plugin). In this way you create a stable version of the logical domain model while further design can continue with the new copied space. Typical will the implementation phase result in a database design and/or a XSD schema design. Add Space Templates Go to the Home page of your Confluence Space. Navigate to the Browse drop-down menu and click on Advanced. Then click the Templates option in the left navigation panel. Click Add New Space Template to add the following three templates. Name: attribute {metadata-list} || Name | | || Type | | || Format | | || Description | | {metadata-list} {add-label:attribute} Name: primary-type {metadata-list} || Name | || || Type | || || Format | || || Description | || {metadata-list} {add-label:primary-type} Name: complex-type {metadata-list} || Name | || || Description | || {metadata-list} h3. Attributes || Name || Type || Format || Description || | [name] | {metadata-from:name|Type} | {metadata-from:name|Format} | {metadata-from:name|Description} | {add-label:complex-type,entity} The metadata-list macro (see Metadata plugin) will save a list of metadata values to the page. The add-label macro (see Label plugin) will automatically label the page. Primary Types Page Our first page to add will act as container for our primary types. Switch to Wiki markup when adding the following content to the page. | (+) {add-page:template=primary-type|parent=@self}Add new primary type{add-page} | {metadata-report:Name,Type,Format,Description|sort=Name|root=@self|pages=@descendents} Once the page is created, click the Add new primary type (create-page macro) to start creating a new pages. Here is an example of input to the LocalDate page. Embrace the LocalDate with square brackets [] to make the page linkable. Again switch to Wiki markup before editing. {metadata-list} || Name | [LocalDate] || || Type | Date || || Format | YYYY-MM-DD || || Description | Date in local time zone. YYYY = year, MM = month and DD = day || {metadata-list} {add-label:primary-type} The metadata-report macro will show a tabular report of all child pages. Attributes Page The next page will act as container for all of our attributes. | (+) {add-page:template=attribute|parent=@self|title=attribute}Add new attribute{add-page} | {metadata-report:Name,Type,Format,Description|sort=Name|pages=@descendants} Here is an example of input to the startDate page. {metadata-list} || Name | [startDate] || || Type | [LocalDate] || || Format | {metadata-from:LocalDate|Format} || || Description | The projects start date || {metadata-list} {add-label:attribute} Using the metadata-from macro we fetch the text from the previously created LocalDate page. It’s my believe that this helps the domain model to be more accurate, and better documented. In our real project we have more pages than illustrated here to complete the documentation. We do also still use UML tools to create different types of diagrams that Confluence do not support. As a last tip, an ImageMap plugin can make those diagrams clickable when used in pages. Enjoy!

• Killing Stuck Child JVM's

- by ACShorten
Note: This facility only applies to Oracle Utilities Application Framework products using COBOL. In some situations, the Child JVM's may spin. This causes multiple startup/shutdown Child JVM messages to be displayed and recursive child JVM's to be initiated and shunned. If the following: Unable to establish connection on port …. after waiting .. seconds. The issue can be caused intermittently by CPU spins in connection to the creation of new processes, specifically Child JVMs. Recursive (or double) invocation of the System.exit call in the remote JVM may be caused by a Process.destroy call that the parent JVM always issues when shunning a JVM. The issue may happen when the thread in the parent JVM that is responsible for the recycling gets stuck and it affects all child JVMs. If this issue occurs at your site then there are a number of options to address the issue: Configure an Operating System level kill command to force the Child JVM to be shunned when it becomes stuck. Configure a Process.destroy command to be used if the kill command is not configured or desired. Specify a time tolerance to detect stuck threads before issuing the Process.destroy or kill commands. Note: This facility is also used when the Parent JVM is also shutdown to ensure no zombie Child JVM's exit. The following additional settings must be added to the spl.properties for the Business Application Server to use this facility: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command – Specify the command to kill the Child JVM process. This can be a command or specify a script to execute to provide additional information. The kill.command property can accept two arguments, {pid} and {jvmNumber}, in the specified string. The arguments must be enclosed in curly braces as shown here. Note: The PID will be appended to the killcmd string, unless the {pid} and {jvmNumber} arguments are specified. The jvmNumber can be useful if passed to a script for logging purposes. Note: If a script is used it must be in the path and be executable by the OS user running the system. spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled – Specify whether to use the Process.destroy command instead of the kill command. Specify true or false. Default value is false. Note: Unless otherwise required, it is recommended to use the kill command option if shunning JVM's is an issue. There this value can remain its default value, false, unless otherwise required. spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.delaysecs – Specify the number of seconds to wait for the Child JVM to terminate naturally before issuing the Process.destroy or kill commands. Default is 10 seconds. For example: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command=kill -9 {pid} {jvmNumber}spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled=falsespl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.delaysecs=10 When a Child JVM is to be recycled, these properties are inspected and the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command, executed if provided. This is done after waiting for spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.delaysecs seconds to give the JVM time to shut itself down. The spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled property must be set to true AND the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command omitted for the original Process.destroy command to be used on the process. Note: By default the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy enabled is set to false and is therefore disabled. If neither spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command nor spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled is specified, child JVMs will not beforcibly killed. They will be left to shut themselves down (which may lead to orphan JVMs). If both are specified, the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command is preferred and spl.runtime.cobol.remote.destroy.enabled defaulted to false. It is recommended to invoke a script to issue the direct kill command instead of directly using the kill -9 commands. For example, the following sample script ensures that the process Id is an active cobjrun process before issuing the kill command: forcequit.sh #!/bin/shTHETIME=`date +"%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S"`if [ "$1" = "" ]then echo "$THETIME: Process Id is required" >>$SPLSYSTEMLOGS/forcequit.log exit 1fijavaexec=cobjrunps e $1 | grep -c $javaexecif [ $? = 0 ]then echo "$THETIME: Process $1 is an active $javaexec process -- issuing kill-9 $1" >>$SPLSYSTEMLOGS/forcequit.log kill -9 $1exit 0else echo "$THETIME: Process id $1 is not a $javaexec process or not active -- kill will not be issued" >>$SPLSYSTEMLOGS/forcequit.logexit 1fi This script's name would then be specified as the value for the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command property, for example: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command=forcequit.sh The forcequit script does not have any explicit parameters but pid is passed automatically. To use the jvmNumber parameter it must explicitly specified in the command. For example, to call script forcequit.sh and pass it the pid and the child JVM number, specify it as follows: spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command=forcequit.sh {pid} {jvmNumber} The script can then use the JVM number for logging purposes or to further ensure that the correct pid is being killed. If the arguments are omitted, the pid is automatically appended to the spl.runtime.cobol.remote.kill.command string. To use this facility the following patches must be installed: Patch 13719584 for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.1, Patches 13684595 and 13634933 for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V2.2 Group Fix 4 (as Patch 13640668) for Oracle Utilities Application Framework V4.1.

It offers leading brands in 150 countries to help patients with cancer, multiple sclerosis, infertility, endocrine and metabolic disorders, as well as cardiovascular diseases. Challenges: Establish a better decision-making framework for its complex, development portfolio of pharmaceutical products, where single-point estimates or expected averages of portfolio values, portfolio risks, and sales forecasts are insufficient and can be misleading Enable the company to be aware at all times of the range of possible outcomes of technical and market risks and uncertainties, such as the technical uncertainty of whether a product will produce the desired clinical outcomes, or the market-related uncertainty of whether a product will be outperformed by its competitors Solutions to Overcome the Challenges: Used Oracle Crystal Ball to devise a Monte-Carlo-based approach to better analyze and define the values and risks of the company’s development portfolio, laying the groundwork for optimized decision-making Enabled a better understanding of the range of potential values and risks to improve portfolio planning Enabled detailed analysis of the likelihood of favorable or unfavorable outcomes, such as the likelihood of whether Merck Serono can meet its sales targets planned for the next ten years with its existing product portfolio Gained the ability to take into account correlative risks, synergies and project interactions, enabling Merck Serono to better forecast what the company may achieve—for example, that there is a 70% probability of a particular sales target being met Established Monte-Carlo-based analysis using Oracle Crystal Ball as a useful element in decision-making at the board level, as the approach provides a better analysis of values and risks associated with the company’s product portfolio “Oracle Crystal Ball enables us to make Monte Carlo simulations of the potential value and sales of our development portfolio. • External USB 3 drive not recognized

- by ilan123
Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit seems not to recognize my external hard disk. It is a Vantec NST-310S3 external disk enclosure with a WD 3TB drive. The disk has two NTFS partitions. My PC is a dual boot system. Under Windows 7 the hard disk works fine but I can't make it work with Ubuntu. When the drive is connected to the PC then the command sudo fdisk -l seems to hang forever. Below are the output of lsusb and cat /proc/partitions without the external drive and then with it connected. I added also the last lines of the dmesg command at the end. • Application Composer: Exposing Your Customizations in BI Analytics and Reporting

- by Richard Bingham
Introduction This article explains in simple terms how to ensure the customizations and extensions you have made to your Fusion Applications are available for use in reporting and analytics. It also includes four embedded demo videos from our YouTube channel (if they don't appear check the browser address bar for a blocking shield icon). If you are new to Business Intelligence consider first reviewing our getting started article, and you can read more about the topic of custom subject areas in the documentation book Extending Sales. There are essentially four sections to this post. First we look at how custom fields added to standard objects are made available for reporting. Secondly we look at creating custom subject areas on the standard objects. Next we consider reporting on custom objects, starting with simple standalone objects, then child custom objects, and finally custom objects with relationships. Finally this article reviews how flexfields are exposed for reporting. Whilst this article applies to both Cloud/SaaS and on-premises deployments, if you are an on-premises developer then you can also use the BI Administration Tool to customize your BI metadata repository (the RPD) and create new subject areas. Whilst this is not covered here you can read more in Chapter 8 of the Extensibility Guide for Developers. Custom Fields on Standard Objects If you add a custom field to your standard object then it's likely you'll want to include it in your reports. This is very simple, since all new fields are instantly available in the "[objectName] Extension" folder in existing subject areas. The following two minute video demonstrates this. Custom Subject Areas for Standard Objects You can create your own subject areas for use in analytics and reporting via Application Composer. An example use-case could be to simplify the seeded subject areas, since they sometimes contain complex data fields and internal values that could confuse business users. One thing to note is that you cannot create subject areas in a sandbox, as it is not supported by BI, so once your custom object is tested and complete you'll need to publish the sandbox before moving forwards. The subject area creation processes is essentially two-fold. Once the request is submitted the ADF artifacts are generated, then secondly the related metadata is sent to the BI presentation server API's to make the updates there. One thing to note is that this second step may take up to ten minutes to complete. Once finished the status of the custom subject area request should show as 'OK' and it is then ready for use. Within the creation processes wizard-like steps there are three concepts worth highlighting: Date Flattening - this feature permits the roll up of reports at various date levels, such as data by week, month, quarter, or year. You simply check the box to enable it for that date field. Measures - these are your own functions that you can build into the custom subject area. They are related to the field data type and include min-max for dates, and sum(), avg(), and count() for numeric fields. Implicit Facts - used to make the BI metadata join between your object fields and the calculated measure fields. The advice is to choose the most frequently used measure to ensure consistency. This video shows a simple example, where a simplified subject area is created for the customer 'Contact' standard object, picking just a few fields upon which users can then create reports. Custom Objects Custom subject areas support three types of custom objects. First is a simple standalone custom object and for which the same process mentioned above applies. The next is a custom child object created on a standard object parent, and finally a custom object that is related to a parent object - usually through a dynamic choice list. Whilst the steps in each of these last two are mostly the same, there are differences in the way you choose the objects and their fields. This is illustrated in the videos below. The first video shows the process for creating a custom subject area for a simple standalone custom object. This second video demonstrates how to create custom subject areas for custom objects that are of parent:child type, as well as those those with dynamic-choice-list relationships. <span id="XinhaEditingPostion"></span> Flexfields Dynamic and Extensible Flexfields satisfy a similar requirement as custom fields (for Application Composer), with flexfields common across the Fusion Financials, Supply Chain and Procurement, and HCM applications. The basic principle is when you enable and configure your flexfields, in the edit page under each segment region (for both global and context segments) there is a BI Enabled check box. Once this is checked and you've completed your configuration, you run the Scheduled Process job named 'Import Oracle Fusion Data Extensions for Transactional Business Intelligence' to generate and migrate the related BI artifacts and data. This applies for dynamic, key, and extensible flexfields. Of course there is more to consider in terms of how you wish your flexfields to be implemented and exposed in your reports, and details are given in Chapter 4 of the Extending Applications guide.

• The Next Frontier: Java Embedded @ JavaOne

Java’s platform independence, high level of functionality, security, and developer productivity, address the key pain points in building embedded solutions... and that’s not just our opinion. Take a look at the new IDC report on Oracle’s stewardship of Java, “Java: Two and a half Years After the Acquisition” (doc #236309, August 2012). Java already powers around 3 billion devices worldwide, with traditional desktops and servers being only a small portion of that, and the ‘Internet of Things‘ is just really starting to explode. It is estimated that within five years, intelligent and connected embedded devices will outnumber desktops and mobile phones combined, and will generate the majority of the traffic on the Internet. Is your platform and services strategy ready for the coming disruptions and opportunities? It should come as no surprise that Oracle is enthusiastically focused on Java for Embedded . New this year, Oracle is demonstrating its further commitment to the embedded marketplace by offering, for the first time, a dedicated conference focused on the business aspects of embedded Java: Java Embedded @ JavaOne. Co-located with the technically-focused JavaOne conference, Java Embedded @ JavaOne will run for two days in San Francisco targeting C-level executives, architects, business leaders, and decision makers. With 24 inspired business sessions with expert speakers from 18 prominent companies driving the next generation of Java Embedded business solutions (such as Cinterion, ARM, Hitachi and Rockwell Automation), attendees will learn how Java Embedded technologies and solutions can offer compelling value and a clear path forward to business efficiency and agility. You’ll also see how Oracle’s comprehensive technology portfolio can deliver a complete ‘Machine to Machine’ platform, from device to datacenter, resulting in a highly secure, resilient, high-performance and cost-effective solution. Seating is limited and we expect a lot of interest in this new event, so please register now! Note that if you are already attending the Oracle OpenWorld or JavaOne conferences, you can attend this conference for only $100 more. Watch my video below to find out more. I hope to see you there!
