• ApplicationPool in IIS 7.5 crashes with identifty set to NetworkService

  We have a web application running on IIS 7.5 with the identity of the Custom Application Pool set to NetworkService. This was working fine for some days and now the application pool has gone in to a stopped state. Why does the application pool fails to run with identity set to NetworkService. Can any one help us resolving this issue?

  How to make VLC play a VLM configuration file (.vlm) in "With no interface mode" on Windows? So I have a VLM configuration file that should stream audio from mic to localhost so no VLC user interface is needed. If I say to Windows "play VLM file with VLC" it plays correctly, starts the server where I need and streams data. But how to do such a thing manually from the command line (so we suppose we can call vlc.exe by VLC and we are now in folder with the vlc.exe and vlcConfig.vlm files)?

• OpenVPN stopped working, what could have happened?

  I have Openvpn, and it worked great when I used it on PC (Windows 8), then I copied all files (Certificates and config) to an Android 4 phone to use them. Now, Openvpn works on the phone, but not the PC. Specifically, when I open Google I get: The server at www.google.com can't be found, because the DNS lookup failed, but the VPN seems to be connected. I have a simple question, could the problem be because I copied the same files?   Note: I'm posting this here on Superuser as I think the issue is more related to the Windows Installer than the game itself. My friend is having trouble installing Company of Heroes and CoH: Opposing fronts under Windows 7. A couple of percent into the installation, when the C/C++ runtime is being installed, the install fails with the following message: An error occured while installing the Windows Installer package "C:\Users\...\AppData\Local\Temp\...\...\vcredist.msi". Error code 10212:00000659: MsiInstallProductW returned 00000659: This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator. We have tried: Making sure that any previous installations have been completely removed, including searching and deleting any files/folders/registry entries matching "THQ" (the publisher) and "Relic" (the developer). Installing into a brand new user account Running Setup.exe as administrator Running Compatibility check for Setup.exe, which suggested Windows XP but failed when trying those settings out Does anyone know what might be the cause of the system policy error?

  The latest update of Windows Live Messenger is an msp added to the package. I want to patch a msp into an msi. Reference download http://wl.dlservice.microsoft.com/download/8/3/D/83D75746-DF04-45E9-8374-BD31B9419128/en/wlsetup-all.exe I extract all msi and msps from this. (To get the msp and msi's I did the following Use resource hacker to open up wlsetup-all.exe In the left hand tree browse to PACKAGE Right click PACKAGE, save PACKAGE resources Save to a new temp folder Eg. D:\temp\package.rc This will output a whole lot of .bin files These are just cab files so we need to do a mass rename “ren *.bin *.cab” Once done select all cab files and extract to a new sub folder \extracted In \extracted you will see all the msi, msp and 7z files you need) I try to apply the msp directly with no result msiexec /p messenger.msp /a messenger.msi I also try doing a admin install with nothing being extracted.

  I have a 32-bit Java installed just for Chrome and 64-bit Java JDK for everything else. When I type java -version in the cmd, the 32-bit Java answers: C:\>java -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode, sharing) This is the 32-bit JRE installed for Chrome (the installer name was chromeinstall.exe). However, I'd like the default Java to be this one: C:\>"Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\java.exe" -version java version "1.6.0_26" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02, mixed mode) And for the fun part, only the 64-bit one is in PATH! • Installing W2K8 R2 on a Dell Poweredge 2850

  I'm a server novice and have been given a Dell 2850 (PERC 4e/Di). It has 3 blank HDs that I think are configured as RAID 5. I am trying to install W2K8 R2 SP1 on it. It doesn't have a DVD reader so I created an install USB. This works fine until it's time to copy files to the HD. It can't see a HD. There is an option to browse for drivers at this stage. Any idea what drivers I need and where to download them? I downloaded this driver RAID_DRVR_WIN_R227150.EXE but this failed with invalid signature.   Suppose you're distributing a program to run on Linux, call it Foo, and the program executable is called foo.exe (because it's a CLR program so it runs under Mono) and it needs a couple of DLLs in the same directory and maybe a later version might need some data files that it reads on startup and whatever, so relocating it to a global bin directory is a bit of hassle and it really prefers to remain in its original directory... But the user would prefer to invoke the program by typing foo instead of mono /path/to/foo.exe. What's the best/most usual way to provide such a short command? Can/should an install script/makefile create a one line script called foo that invokes the full path, and put the one line script in a global bin directory? If so, what should be the target bin directory, and are there any directions about exactly how to do this? Or is there a preferred alternative?

  I'm using Windows Vista's search index service to quickly launch programs by typing "windows key" +"name of program". However I'm having a hard time trying to understand why certain files won't appear. I want to launch "pageant.exe" located in "C:\Program Files\Putty" with this method but it doesn't show up in the results. In the index search options I said I wanted to index the "Start menu" and "C:\Program Files". I've checked that .exe files are indeed indexed and they are. I've also tried to completly rebuild the index with no luck. What am I doing wrong ?

  I just noticed this yesterday. I selected different memory columns, none of them worked, and I've tried showing processes from all users. I'm using Win 7. • Cannot terminate proces: access is denied

  Skype and Spotify remain active after I close them. When I try to close them via Task Manager Details End Task, I get the following error: The operation could not be completed. Access is denied. So I have to reboot to get rid of these programs or to log in to Skype again. Also, running a CMD as administrator and executing taskkill /f /im skype.exe results in an Access is denied error. What is going on? (this is Windows 8 RTM x64) update I have to kill skype.exe because it crashed and when I restart skype, I get the following error: It says: Could not open Skype, you are already signed in on this computer. update 2 The process is owned by my own username.

  On Windows, *.exe, *.bat, *.cmd, and *.com all represent programs or shell scripts that can be run, simply by double-clicking them. Are there any other filename extensions that indicate a file is executable? EDIT: When I jump into a new project (or back into an old project!), one of the common things I want to do when looking around is to find out what tools there are. On Unix (which I've used for decades), there's an execute bit, so this is as simple as: find . -executable -type f I figured that on Windows, which seems to have a much more complex mechanism for "is this executable (and how do I execute it)", there would be a relatively small number of file name extensions which would serve roughly the same purpose. For my current project, *.exe *.bat *.cmd is almost certainly sufficient, but I figured I'd ask if there was an authoritative list.

  Hi, I have a phone landline connection and I DO NOT have a phone instrument. I connect the cable into my laptop, and want to make calls using my laptop. I have an HDA CX20561 modem. • Tracking down random BSOD on windows 7

  I have gotten a computer running windows 7 handed to me that randomly, several times a day, bsods with a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50) or WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR (124). Crashes happens regardless of load. I am running out of ideas for how to track this down. Analyzing the minidumps shows the crash to be in ntkrnlmp.exe/WMIADAP.exe System has plenty of power (600w) Ram checks out fine using memtest86+ over a weekend. System is clean inside. No dust build up. Temperatures stay low. As far as I know (and reliability history shows) no new drivers were installed for several months before the problems started. All drivers are now up to date. sfc /scannow reports the system as clean. CHKDSK reports the disks as clean Removing the AV (Avast) has no effect. Any more things that should be tried on windows 7 before I start replacing the hardware?

• How to pin NetBeans to Windows 7 taskbar?

  I've googled around and it seems that I'm not the only one with the problem, however I couldn't find the solution. Maybe someone around here has figured it out. The problem is that netbeans.exe is actually a stub which is calling javaw.exe. When I try to pin the NetBeans process to the taskbar I actually pin "Java(TM) Platform SE Binary". That changes the icon and the pin doesn't work. The funny thing is that it works on another machine. I don't know whether it's because it's a different version of NetBeans, or a different version of Java. Has anyone figured this out? Added: I know this is sort of not programming related; on the other hand there are plenty of topics around here about how to better your programming environment, and this one is no worse than those.   I'm working on my systems without admin rights, but I'd like to start sysinternals process explorer as full admin to have some debug access on my machine. Right now I run procexp.exe with parameter /e, which prompts me for admin credentials. Of course I could use runas, but for this I would need to put my admin passwort in clear text in the corresponding batch file, which is something I don't like to do. Is there a way to tell windows that this one procexp.exe is allowed to run as admin without needing to enter the credentials?

  I tried to use sqlmaint.exe tool to back up a database on a remote PC. Here is an example of backup: sqlmaint.exe -S remoteSQLServer\SQLInstance -U username -P pwdxxx -D myDB -BkUpMedia DISK -BkUpDB C:\MSSQL_Backups -DelBkUps 3days ... Here I specified to delete backups older than 3 days. However, the job seems not deleting old bak files on the remote PC(where the SQL server sits). The remote PC has Windows 2008 Server. I also set the C:\MSQL_Backups as shared network drive for EnyOne as owner. My understanding is that the job will delete any bak files older than 3 days. Not sure what I missed? By the way, the job runs at a box with SQL server 2005 installed.

  I have a folder with several thousand videos (All .MPG extensions). When I open the folder with these videos, it shows up fine, but as I start scrolling down, it crashes the Windows Explorer. I removed the Length column and it was still crashing. I then removed the Date column and the problem disappeared. How do I go about troubleshooting this problem or at least identifying the file that's causing the issue.

• Presentation software requires admin rights to install - any way to remove this requirement?

  I have some wireless presentation software which I use in a meeting room in order to allow end users to hold presentations here and wirelessly have their laptop screens showing on the TV on the wall. Unfortunately the .exe file requires admin rights to install therefore requiring that either the user requests temporary admin rights beforehand, I install it using my admin account or that we use a VGA/HDMI cable. Is there a way to remove the admin right requirement from a .exe or a .msi file so that it can be installed freely by any user? We are using XP for now but will be moving to 7 soon. Thanks James

• OS2/Warp - Remotely Stop and Restart a Program

  Our current phone system runs off of a legacy OS2/Warp box. Periodically we have to log into the machine and restart OS2RSD.exe and then start it again and the phone system starts working again. The problem is we have to physically get in front of the box and use the GUI to stop and restart the process. Is it possibly to remotely run a script to kill OS2RSD.exe if its running and then start it again? I have been unable to figure this out on my own. The OS is OS2/Warp Version 3 if that helps.

  I tried to install Visio on Windows 7, but I received the below error message. You cannot install the 64-bit version of Office 2010 because you have 32-bit Office products installed. These 32-bit products are not supported with 64-bit installations: Microsoft Office Single Image 2010 If you want to install 64-bit Office 2010, you must uninstall all 32-bit Office products first, and then run setup.exe in the x64 folder. If you want to install 32-bit Office 2010, close this Setup program, and then either go to the x86 folder at the root of your CD or DVD and run setup.exe, or get the 32-bit Office 2010 from the same place you purchased 64-bit Office 2010. I cannot find Microsoft Office Single Image 2010 in the programs list, so I tried to use Microsoft's Fix It to remove the software, but this doesn't resolve my issue.

• Setting up Kerberos SSO in Windows 2008 network

  We recently introduced Kerberos (SPNEGO) Single Sign-on in our web-portal, and tested it on a Windows network with Windows 2003 domain controller. Now, trying to test it on Windows 2008 R2 controlled network, SSO just doesn't work due to defective tokens. Up to the moment I was pretty sure that there's something wrong about environment and that were NTLM tokens. We double checked IE settings etc, but nothing helped. Then we checked the following settings for both users (logged on a client test-machine, and the one used as a Service Principal): This account supports Kerberos AES 128 bit encryption. This account supports Kerberos AES 256 bit encryption. .. and error message changed to ' GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level (Mechanism level: Encryption type AES256CTS mode with HMAC SHA1-96 is not supported/enabled) It makes me think that Internet Explorer receives Kerberos tokens at all times, and there's just some configuration missing, or it was ktpass.exe to be incorrectly executed. Here's how ktpass.exe was invoked: C:ktpass /out portal1.keytab /mapuser USER /princ HTTP/[email protected] /pass *
