  • Silverlight Reporting Application Part 3.5 - Prism Background and WCF RIA [Series Intermission]

    Taking a step back before I dive into the details and full-on coding fun, I wanted to once again respond to a comment on my last post to clear up some things in regards to how I'm setting up my project and some of the choices I've made. Aka, thanks Ben. :) Prism Project Setup For starters, I'm not the ideal use case for a Prism application. In most cases where you've got a one-man team, Prism can be overkill as it is more intended for large teams who are geographically dispersed or in applications that have a larger scale than my Recruiting application in which you'll greatly benefit from modularity, delayed loading of xaps, etc. What Prism offers, though, is a manner for handling UI, commands, and events with the idea that, through a modular approach in which no parts really need to know about one another, I can update this application bit by bit as hiring needs change or requirements differ between offices without having to worry that changing something in the Jobs module will break something in, say, the Scheduling module. All that being said, here's a look at how our project breakdown for Recruit (MVVM/Prism implementation) looks: This could be a little misleading though, as each of those modules is actually another project in the overall Recruit solution. As far as what the projects actually are, that looks a bit like this: Recruiting Solution Recruit (Shell up there) - Main Silverlight Application .Web - Default .Web application to host the Silverlight app Infrastructure - Silverlight Class Library Project Modules - Silverlight Class Library Projects Infrastructure &Modules The Infrastructure project is probably something you'll see to some degree in any composite application. In this application, it is going to contain custom commands (you'll see the joy of these in a post or two down the road), events, helper classes, and any custom classes I need to share between different modules. Think of this as a handy little crossroad between any parts of your application. Modules on the other hand are the bread and butter of this application. Besides the shell, which holds the UI skeleton, and the infrastructure, which holds all those shared goodies, the modules are self-contained bundles of functionality to handle different concerns. In my scenario, I need a way to look up and edit Jobs, Applicants, and Schedule interviews, a Notification module to handle telling the user when different things are happening (i.e., loading from database), and a Menu to control interaction and moving between different views. All modules are going to follow the following pattern: The module class will inherit from IModule and handle initialization and loading the correct view into the correct region, whereas the Views and ViewModels folders will contain paired Silverlight user controls and ViewModel class backings. WCF RIA Services Since we've got all the projects in a single solution, we did not have to go the route of creating a WCR RIA Services Class Library. Every module has it's WCF RIA link back to the main .Web project, so the single Linq-2-SQL (yes, I said Linq-2-SQL, but I'll soon be switching to OpenAccess due to the new visual designer) context I'm using there works nicely with the scope of my project. If I were going for completely separating this project out and doing different, dynamically loaded elements, I'd probably go for the separate class library. Hope that clears that up. In the future though, I will be using that in a project that I've got in the "when I've got enough time to work on this" pipeline, so we'll get into that eventually- and hopefully when WCF RIA is in full release! Why Not use Silverlight Navigation/Business Template? The short answer- I'm a creature of habit, and having used Silverlight for a few years now, I'm used to doing lots of things manually. :) Plus, starting with a blank slate of a project I'm able to set up things exactly as I want them to be. In this case, rather than the navigation frame we would see in one of the templates, the MainRegion/ContentControl is working as our main navigation window. In many cases I will use theSilverlight navigation template to start things off, however in this case I did not need those features so I opted out of using that. Next time when I actually hit post #4, we're going to get into the modules and starting to get functionality into this application.     This week we wrapped up a set of work to improve the actions and navigation within the project tabs. Now each tab in a project has a more consistent interaction experience. The navigation and filter activities are on the left side and action based links on the right.   • Path Finding for an Arena based map in 3D using NavMesh

    I have a 3D arena map (consider a small island surrounded by water on all sides) for a multiplayer Tank fight game. The moveable areas are marked using a Navigation Mesh made by the Arena designer. My question is what would be the best way for navigation in such an environment ? Specially considering the case when there is a Bridge at the center of the arena and you could walk under it or even above it ? If suppose the enemy is standing at the top of the Bridge and my AI is at one of the edges of the map ? How can it know whether the enemy is above or below the bridge and how can it navigate till it ?

  • Gnome 3 - Old fashioned buttons and menus

    I've upgraded to Gnome 3 and the problem I'm facing is that when I restart, sometimes the menus and buttons look old-fashioned like this: whereas sometimes, it looks modern and neat like this: Notice the differences between the two: here are a few differences: The menu bar (notice the difference in fonts, dark grey color of Snapshot1 vs the light grey color in Snapshot2 in the background) The file navigation bar bellow the menu bar (notice the 'Home' button there and also the left arrow button) The left-hand side navigation bar (font, background color and color of selected folder) The old style look effects the GTK aspects of the interface, such as the menu, buttons, mouse pointer etc. Another observation is that changing the GTK themes does using gnome-tweak-tool when the old style look is loaded does NOT work. However, this works when the regular look is loaded. How can I ensure that the old-fashioned look does not load on boot?

  • Visual Studio Setup - why is solution explorer on the right?

    Every time I install VS (whichever version going back years) it installs with the Solution Explorer on the right. Now as most UIs have the navigation in a left hand column (and at the top of the viewport) and the content to the right of this navigation this always seems wrong to me. So I drag the solution explorer to the left of the screen and dock it there. But I've never seen another developer do this. Considering how most programmers usually like to customize their environment, adding their favourite text editor, browser, plug-ins, greasemonkey scripts etc why do Visual Studio developers never seem to make this simple UI change? Does anyone else do this or am I just screaming in the dark?

    I'm currently working with phpmyedit and I need to access to the 'Add' (new record) function using a URL. As this script (phpmyedit) is dinamically generated, when I press the 'Add' button, I get the form to fill but the URL has no changes. How can I create some custom URL for the ADD button, that allows me to access externally and also pass parameters through the URL?   • EF4 POCO WCF Serialization problems (no lazy loading, proxy/no proxy, circular references, etc)

    OK, I want to make sure I cover my situation and everything I've tried thoroughly. I'm pretty sure what I need/want can be done, but I haven't quite found the perfect combination for success. I'm utilizing Entity Framework 4 RTM and its POCO support. I'm looking to query for an entity (Config) that contains a many-to-many relationship with another entity (App). I turn off lazy loading and disable proxy creation for the context and explicitly load the navigation property (either through .Include() or .LoadProperty()). However, when the navigation property is loaded (that is, Apps is loaded for a given Config), the App objects that were loaded already contain references to the Configs that have been brought to memory. This creates a circular reference. Now I know the DataContractSerializer that WCF uses can handle circular references, by setting the preserveObjectReferences parameter to true. I've tried this with a couple of different attribute implementations I've found online. It is needed to prevent the "the object graph contains circular references and cannot be serialized" error. However, it doesn't prevent the serialization of the entire graph, back and forth between Config and App. If I invoke it via WcfTestClient.exe, I get a stackoverflow (ha!) exception from the client and I'm hosed. I get different results from different invocation environments (C# unit test with a local reference to the web service appears to work ok though I still can drill back and forth between Configs and Apps endlessly, but calling it from a coldfusion environment only returns the first Config in the list and errors out on the others.) My main goal is to have a serialized representation of the graph I explicitly load from EF (ie: list of Configs, each with their Apps, but no App back to Config navigation.) NOTE: I've also tried using the ProxyDataContractResolver technique and keeping the proxy creation enabled from my context. This blows up complaining about unknown types encountered. I read that the ProxyDataContractResolver didn't fully work in Beta2, but should work in RTM. For some reference, here is roughly how I'm querying the data in the service: var repo = BootStrapper.AppCtx["AppMeta.ConfigRepository"] as IRepository<Config>; repo.DisableLazyLoading(); repo.DisableProxyCreation(); //var temp2 = repo.Include(cfg => cfg.Apps).Where(cfg => cfg.Environment.Equals(environment)).ToArray(); var temp2 = repo.FindAll(cfg => cfg.Environment.Equals(environment)).ToArray(); foreach (var cfg in temp2) { repo.LoadProperty(cfg, c => c.Apps); } return temp2; I think the crux of my problem is when loading up navigation properties for POCO objects from Entity Framework 4, it prepopulates navigation properties for objects already in memory. This in turn hoses up the WCF serialization, despite every effort made to properly handle circular references. I know it's a lot of information, but it's really standing in my way of going forward with EF4/POCO in our system. I've found several articles and blogs touching upon these subjects, but for the life of me, I cannot resolve this issue. Feel free to simply ask questions and help me brainstorm this situation. PS: For the sake of being thorough, I am injecting the WCF services using the HEAD build of Spring.NET for the fix to Spring.ServiceModel.Activation.ServiceHostFactory. However I don't think this is the source of the problem.

  • Why am I getting 'Argument count mismatch' error here?

    I have a Document class, Intro class and Nav class. The Intro class runs first, then sends a custom dispatch event to run the Nav class, but I'm getting this error: removed Intro ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on com.secrettowriting.StanPlayer.ui::Navigation/addNav(). Expected 0, got 1. at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEventFunction() at flash.events::EventDispatcher/dispatchEvent() at com.secrettowriting.StanPlayer.display::Intro/removeIntro() at flash.utils::Timer/_timerDispatch() at flash.utils::Timer/tick() The addNav function in the Navigation class should expect 0 arguments/variables and I'm not sending any arguments/variables to it, which is why I'm confused as to why it's saying I'm getting 1.   • Installing Ruby 1.9.3 OSX 10.7.4 breaks after altering PATH

    I was having trouble installing ruby 1.9.3-p194 from ruby 1.8.7 on my mac osx 10.7.4. I have was trying to fix my homebrew after running "brew doctor" and got the message of "/usr/bin occurs before /usr/local/bin This means that system-provided programs will be used instead of those provided by Homebrew. The following tools exist at both paths: c++-4.2 cpp-4.2 erb g++-4.2 gcc-4.2 gcov-4.2 gem i686-apple-darwin11-cpp-4.2.1 i686-apple-darwin11-g++-4.2.1 i686-apple-darwin11-gcc-4.2.1 irb rake rdoc ri ruby testrb" I fixed it by entering the following, which I found on another stackoverflow answer: export PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:~/bin$PATH" Lo and behold! when I typed that ruby updates to 1.9.3-p194. Ruby files seem to compile and run just fine. However, afterward, my navigation around terminal is messed up severely. For instance I can't do the command "open example_file.html" and have the file pop up in Chrome, instead I get the error: "-bash: open: command not found" Also, when I change directory, I get an error, inputting "$ cd desktop" yields the output, "-bash: dirname: command not found" but the directory does then changes... strange. When I exit out of a terminal window all this resets. I'm back to Ruby 1.8.7, have to use the PATH command again to update to 1.9.3, command line navigation gets broken again. Any guidance on how to remedy so I can use 1.9.3-p194 and also have normal terminal navigation would be greatly appreciated.

  • Learning PHP - start out using a framework or no?

    I've noticed a lot of jobs in my area for PHP. I've never used PHP before, and figure if I can get more opportunities if I pick it up then it might be a good idea. The problem is that PHP without any framework is ugly and 99% of the time really bad code. All the tutorials and books I've seen are really lousy - it never shows any kind of good programming practice but always the quick and dirty kind of way of doing things. I'm afraid that trying to learn PHP this way will just imprint these bad practices in my head and make me waste time later trying to unlearn them. I've used C# in the past so I'm familiar with OOP and software design patterns and similar. Should I be trying to learn PHP by using one of the better known frameworks for it? I've looked at CakePHP, Symfony and the Zend Framework so far; Zend seems to be the most flexible without being too constraining like Cake and Symfony (although Symfony seemed less constraining than CakePHP which is trying too hard to be Ruby on Rails), but many tutorials for Zend I've seen assume you already know PHP and want to learn to use the framework. What would be my best opportunity for learning PHP, but learning GOOD PHP that uses real software engineering techniques instead of spaghetti code? It seems all the PHP books and resources either assume you are just using raw PHP and therefore showcase bade practices, or that you already know PHP and therefore don't even touch on parts of the language.

    I have a navigation controller in my left portion of my split view, and in the right portion. But sometimes, for example when an item is tapped, my left side must manually set the view controller on the right side. Where is the best place to store the split view controller instance? Pass it around to each view controller on the left side, like I do with the navigation controller? Store it in my App Delegate and then access it via a property with [[UIApplication sharedApplication] delegate].splitView?

    Hi, I'm using Amazon's simpledb in my app. When parsing xml it gives an error with the code 5. ie. NSXMLParserErrorDomain error 5. Sometimes it works fine and without any significant change in the navigation is gives that error. Again it works fine when i restart the app several times without doing any changes to the code or navigation in the system. I cant figure out the reason why this happens. thanks

  • Anchor tag not centered on page after clicking

    I am creating a website that scrolls down to different divs by the use of anchors. However, when I click on a link, that anchored div is not centered on the page.   • Is that possible using "setAutoresizingMask" to make the view autoresizing after hiding/showing navi

    I am doing this with the following: [[self navigationController] setNavigationBarHidden:YES animated:YES]; and also I didn't use IB to create view objects. But my view did not auto-resize after hiding navigation bar(there was a blank area where the navigation bar used to be) I am wondering if I could make it auto-resize only by "setAutoresizingMask", or do I have to use some hand-writing animation stuff?
