• Network connection fails when downloading data

  In the past few weeks, I've noticed my network connection becoming unstable while downloading files. I'm not sure how to diagnose this issue. I've found that my network connections appear to be temporarily unresponsive (for periods up to a minute or so) while I'm downloading a file (that's large enough to not be downloaded instantly). The problem occurs when downloading data through a webbrowser, but also when using SCP to download data from a remote location. During the period in which network connections are unresponsive, every resource that I try to access over the network is unavailable. This includes: The download itself (SCP reports a 'stalled' download) Web pages (won't load - browsers report 'resource unavailable') SSH sessions (CLI freezes) VPN connections (connections terminate) IM client connections (client starts reconnection attempts) ... (everything is pretty much dead) I've noticed that during such a period, I cannot even access the (web-based) administrative console of the router on my LAN at home (although it remains reachable for other devices). The problem occurs when connected to my home network, but also when I'm in the office. Other devices than my laptop are not affected. Given the above two characteristics I assume the problem cause lies within my laptop, not the network infrastructure. I'm running Ubuntu 11.10. Apart from applying automatic updates from Ubuntu, I can't think of a change that I applied to the OS that could have started the problems. I'm absolutely positive that this issue did not occur up to a few weeks ago (as it's very noticeable, and only started to annoy me in the last few days). When the problem occurs, applications that make use of a network connection fail visibly (I get popups telling me that a VPN connection is broken, for instance). The network manager does not report any issues related to my wifi-connection though. Help?

• Code base migration - old versioning system to modern

  Our current code base is contained in a versioning system that is old and outdated (Visual Sourcesafe 5.0, mid 1990's), and contains a mix of packages that are no longer used, ones that are being used but no longer updated, and newer code. It is also a mix of 4 languages, and includes libraries for some of our systems (Such as Dialogic, Sun Tzu {clipper}) implementations. This breaks down into the following categories: Legacy code - No longer used (Systems that have been retired or replaced, etc) Legacy code - In current use (No intentions for upgrades or minor bug fixes, only major fixes if needed) Current code - In current use, and will be used for future versions/development Support libraries - For both legacy and current code (Some of the legacy libraries are no longer available as well) We would like to migrate this to a newer versioning system as we will be adding more developers, and expanding the reach to include remote programmers. When migrating, how do you structure it? Do you just perform a dump of all the data and then import it into the new system, or do you segregate according to type before you bring it into the new system? Do you set up a separate area for libraries, or keep them with the relevant packages? Do you separate by language, system, both? A general outline and methodology is fine, it doesn't need to be broken down to individual program level.

• 12.04 update crash, now cannot boot

  Boot now freezes the system at the "Ubuntu purple screen" with the 5 dots under it. I cannot even CTRL-ALT-F1 to get to an alternate console. Have to push reset button on computer to reboot. After the 12.04 update crash, the system would boot, but I had no icons and no launch bar and errors about missing dependencies. CTRL-ALT-F1 and ran apt-get -f install and it appeared to get the missing packages. I followed with a apt-get update; apt-get upgrade. It appeared to install all of the remaining 12.04 update packages. Rebooted to same blank screen - no icons, but got a compiz error. In console I tried "unity --reset" rebooted ... Nothing ... It's dead in the water. Tried to boot into Recovery Mode - black screen - I cannot even CTRL-ALT-Del - have to push reboot button. Fortunately, I have Mint on another partition and I can access the broken 12.04 partition. Ideas? I can back up all of my folders using Mint, but I would hate to have to do a new install.

• What are the hard and fast rules for Cache Control?

  Confession: sites I maintain have different rules for Cache Control mostly based on the default configuration of the server followed up with recommendations from the Page Speed & Y-Slow Firefox plug-ins and the Network Resources view in Google's Speed Tracer. Cache-Control is set to private/public depending on what they say to do, ETag's/Last-Modified headers are only tinkered with if Y-Slow suggests there is something wrong and Vary-Accept-Encoding seems necessary when manually gziping files for Amazon CloudFront. When reading through the material on the different options and what they do there seems to be conflicting information, rules for broken proxies and cargo cult configurations. Any of the official information provided by the analysis tools mentioned above is quite inaccessible as it deals with each topic individually instead of as a unified strategy (so there is no cross-referencing of techniques). For example, it seems to make no sense that the speed analysis tools rate a site with ETag's the same as a site without them if they are meant to help with caching. What are the hard and fast rules for a platform agnostic Cache Control strategy? EDIT: A link through Jeff Atwood's article explains Caching in superb depth. For the record though here are the hard and fast rules: If the file is Compressed using GZIP, etc - use "cache-control: private" as a proxy may return the compressed version to a client that does not support it (the browser cache will hold files marked this way though). Also remember to include a "Vary: Accept-Encoding" to say that it is compressible. Use Last-Modified in conjunction with ETag - belt and braces usage provides both validators, whilst ETag is based on file contents instead of modification time alone, using both covers all bases. NOTE: AOL's PageTest has a carte blanche approach against ETags for some reason. If you are using Apache on more than one server to host the same content then remove the implicitly declared inode from ETags by excluding it from the FileETag directive (i.e. "FileETag MTime Size") unless you are genuinely using the same live filesystem. Use "cache-control: public" wherever you can - this means that proxy servers (and the browser cache) will return your content even if the rest of the page needs HTTP authentication, etc.

• Problem with dpkg-preconfigure, how to correct?

  I was trying to install TeamViewer, and I followed the instructions here even though they specify 11.10 instead of 12.04 (what I'm running). In particular, I executed. $ wget http://www.teamviewer.com/download/teamviewer_linux.deb $ sudo dpkg -i teamviewer_linux.deb The dpkg command failed, and after this point my packaging system has been broken. The software center instructs me to try: $ sudo apt-get -f install which leads to Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... • Click buttons on the mouse stopped working in 12.10

  everything was great for a couple weeks after the upgrade, and then all of a sudden, the click buttons on my trackpad (as well as any other USB mouse I would hook up) stopped working. The pointer moves fine, but the clicks don't work. Sometimes the left click doesn't work but right click does, and then some times, neither works. I noticed this would begin when I would accidentally drag some text in a web browser (you know how when you try to move your pointer through the trackpad, but you accidentally tap down and it starts to drag whatever text you've selected on the window), and then you're done. The clicks won't work after that. They would work upon rebooting or logging off and back on, but then after a few minutes of usage, things would go back to being broken again. It happened a LOT when I was trying to play Scrabble on Facebook. I've raised a bug for this, but I haven't heard back anything on it. Here's the bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1077805 Since the system was unusable this way, I had to remove it and install another OS based on 12.04. Has anyone else faced this issue or does someone know what to do to fix it? I'd go back to vanilla Ubuntu in a heartbeat if this issue can be fixed.

• Vector vs Scalar velocity?

  I am revamping an engine I have been working on and off on for the last few weeks to use a directional vector to dictate direction; this way I can dictate the displacement based on a direction. However, the issue I am trying to overcome is the following problem; the speed towards X and speed towards Y are unrelated to one another. If gravity pulls the object down by an increasing velocity my velocity towards the X should not change. This is very easy to implement if my speed is broken into a Vector datatype, Vector.X dictates one direction Vector.Y dictates the other (assuming we are not concerned about the Z axis). However, this defeats the purpose of the directional vector because: SpeedX = 10 SpeedY = 15 [1, 1] normalized = ~[0.7, 0.7] [0.7, 0.7] * [10, 15] = [7, 10.5] As you can see my direction is now "scaled" to my speed which is no longer the direction that I want to be moving in. I am very new to vector math and this is a learning project for me. I looked around a little bit on the internet but I still want to figure out things on my own (not just look at an example and copy off it). Is there way around this? Using a directional vector is extremely useful but I am a little bit stumped at this problem. I am sorry if my mathematical understanding maybe completely wrong.

• when I type apt-get -f install, I get the error message

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook &ndash; Book Review (sort of)

  I just received my copy of the Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook, co-authored by fellow Microsoft Regional Director, Gill Cleeren, and at first glance I like what I see. I’ve always been a fan of the “cookbook” approach to technical books because they are problem/solution oriented. Often developers need solutions to solve specific questions like “how do I send email from within my .NET application” and so on, and yes, that was a blatant plug to my article explaining how to accomplish just that, but I digress. :-) I also enjoy the cookbook approach because you can just start flipping pages and randomly stop somewhere and see what nugget of information is staring up at you from the page. Anyway, what I like about this book is that it focuses on a specific area of Silverlight development, accessing data and services.  The book is broken down into the following chapters: Chapter 1: Learning the Nuts and Bolts of Silverlight 4 Chapter 2: An Introduction to Data Binding Chapter 3: Advanced Data Binding Chapter 4: The Data Grid Chapter 5: The DataForm Chapter 6: Talking to Services Chapter 7: Talking to WCF and ASMX Services Chapter 8: Talking to REST and WCF Data Services Chapter 9: Talking to WCF RIA Services Chapter 10: Converting Your Existing Applications to Use Silverlight As you can see this book is all about working with Silverlight 4 and data. • Ubuntu 12.04 using b43-fwcutter

  I have used 10.04 with the b43-fwcutter driver to drive my BCM4318 Broadcom card (a Linksys WPC54G v3) on my old Dell Inspiron 8100 for two years+ with no troubles. I just upgraded to 12.04 and although everything worked fine after install, before I added the b43-fwcutter driver, once I installed the driver, the system refuses to boot. Even before I install the Linksys card!! It just hangs on boot with graphical garbage on the screen. I tried several attempts to recover the system using the live CD, and finally reinstalled completely. I have been thru the cycle, install fresh system, verify everything works, then install b43-fwcutter and it is hung, several times. Consistent hard fail. The system runs fine on hardwire Ethernet, and wireless was fine on 10.04. But I cannot get there with 12.04. So after several attempts, I am now ready to admit defeat and ask for help. I have read every thread that search turned up, and either the advice is to do what I did, i.e. install fwcutter, or does not apply (Different Broadcom, STA, legacy, whatever) So what do I need to do to fix it? Or is the B43-fwcutter driver broken for 12.04? Thoughts? Tips? Log files needed??

• Is individual code ownership important?

  I'm in the midst of an argument with some coworkers over whether team ownership of the entire codebase is better than individual ownership of components of it. I'm a huge proponent of assigning every member of the team a roughly equal share of the codebase. It lets people take pride in their creation, gives the bug screeners an obvious first place to assign incoming tickets, and helps to alleviate "broken window syndrome". It also concentrates knowledge of specific functionality with one (or two) team members making bug fixes much easier. Most of all, it puts the final say on major decisions with one person who has a lot of input instead of with a committee. I'm not advocating for requiring permission if somebody else wants to change your code; maybe have the code review always be to the owner, sure. Nor am I suggesting building knowledge silos: there should be nothing exclusive about this ownership. But when suggesting this to my coworkers, I got a ton of pushback, certainly much more than I expected. So I ask the community: what are your opinions on working with a team on a large codebase? Is there something I'm missing about vigilantly maintaining collective ownership?

• Weird system freeze. Nothing works keyboard/mouse/reset button - Ubuntu 12.04 64bits [closed]

  I have fresh PC: i5 3570K with Intel 4000 onboard ASrock Z77 Extreme4-m 8GG RAM - Adata 1333Mhz... 1TB Seagate drive 7200rpm I've also fresh systems - Ubuntu/Win7 and today there was something strange. Ubuntu twice just freezed. Everything stopped, even keyboard and mouse wasn't responding. Even RESET button didn't work. Right now memtest is running, but I'd like to know, where else can i look for cause. Can it be software fault if even reset isn't working? Only long reset pressing rebooted PC... I'm a bit confused. Or should I test components - CPU, motherboard, disk. Which logs in Ubuntu should I check to diagnose cause? EHm I had few adventures with this PC already. Shipped motherboard was broken (ASrock Z68 Extreme3) and had old bios, so I had to contact with reseller, replace it and at the end decided on Z77, but everything took 3 weeks, so I have bad feelings... Edit: Both freezes were during editing something in gedit (it can be coincidence) and after few updates today - when memtest is end I'll check what was updated

• This for array colllision function doesn't work with anything but first object in array

  For some reason, this simple simple loop is totally broken. (characterSheet is my character Class, it's just a movieClip with some extra functionality) (hitBox, is basically a square movieclip) Anyway: every time hitBox make contact with a characterSheet in a different order than they were created: Nothing happens. The program only seems to be listening to collisions that are made with o2[0]. As soon as another hitBox is created, it pushes the last one out of o2[0] and the last one becomes totally useless. • Dependencies not met on 12.04?

  Now I'm very aware that there are many questions out there that are quite similar to what I'm experiencing, but I have looked through many and I have not found a suitable answer. You are welcome to suggest questions that are similar, but I doubt that it will help. Getting on to the issue at hand, whenever I do anything that involves installation, whether it be codecs for videos, new programs or whatever the latter, I always get the 'Dependencies not met' error. In addition, I also get this notification in the panel: When clicked, the menu says this: "An error occurred. Please run Package Manager from the right-click menu or run apt-get in a terminal to see what is wrong. The error message was: ' Error: Broken Count 0'. This usually means your installed packages have unmet dependencies." It gives me three items to click: Show Updates Install all updates Check for Updates And then finally: Show Notifications (with a tick) Preferences When I try 'Install all Updates' (also Check Updates Install) it says this: and also this: As well as 'Ubuntu has experienced an internal error' and 'Did this error occur when moving from one version of Ubuntu to another?' (I clicked NO, because it didn't). So I took it's advice and ran sudo apt-get install -f This is what results: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Correcting dependencies... Done The following extra packages will be installed: libapt-pkg4.12:i386 The following packages will be upgraded: libapt-pkg4.12:i386 1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 87 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. • How do I finish installing Sun JDK after cancelling out of the legal term screen?

  I am a newcomer to linux and have had lots of problems in installing java on my newly installed Ubuntu 11.10. I use a statistical programming environment called R and many of the packages there require java (the sun variety, I am told). I tried the following : sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ferramroberto/java sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre sun-java6-plugin sun-java6-fonts (after this, I wanted to continue with (but never got that far) : sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jdk After this, a window appeared with the heading, "Configuring jre", or something like that. Below was a long list of legal text about accepting Sun's terms. I did not know how to close this window (no obvious option like pressing return worked). After a long time, when nothing seemed to happen, I finally closed the window. After that, I could not open synaptic. I got the error message : dpkg was interrupted. You must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' I did this. But it does not help. I have java as a "broken" program. When I try to remove the program from synaptic, I get a message that I must reinstall it again.I do not know what I should do. I want to install jdk6. And also remove the open jdk which is still persistently present in my system. I tried the clean and purge command shown below. Next, I tried to remove the sun-java6-jre from synaptic. I get the following message :E: sun-java6-jre: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. When I tried to follow the procedure suggested in the related question (from the link suggested below), I get the following message on trying to install again :Could not mark all packages for installation or upgrade.The following packages have unresolvable dependancies. • Need to modify gnome 3 theme for browser

  I have recently begun using the DarkGreen theme for Gnome 3, however there are some problems on some webpages in FireFox regarding text input fields. This happens in the search field on Google, some fields on Facebook, etc... This theme uses a dark background and light color text for input fields by defaut. I have managed to modify the foreground color of input text succesfully for those fields that were never affected (from near white to gray), but it doesn't help for the "broken" fields. I also want to change the background color for all input fields to white, but I get no luck with that either. In the theme folder there is a gtk folder with a css file. • New site not appearing in index after change of address, no feedback from google webmaster tools

  Our change of address seems to not be taking effect. Here's the story so far: We're a web company and our product is called The New Hive. Our site used to be at thenewhive.com, but we decided to switch to newhive.com (drop the "the", it's cleaner). So the timeline of what I've tried, starting on July 29th: used 301 redirects for all pages (e.g. thenewhive.com/tag/art = newhive.com/tag/art) At this point we noticed that we had disappeared from search results when searching "The New Hive", the front page used to be all links to our site plus a couple news articles about the company. So on August 5th I: verified new domain in webmaster tools (old domain was already verified) submitted a change of address request on August 5th with Webmaster Tools / Configuration / Change of Address Then after another week, on August 13th I did this: Went to Webmaster Tools / Health / Fetch as google fetched our homepage and a couple sub pages, all successfully clicked "Submit to Index" for homepage As of today (August 23rd) we're still not showing up in the index. We're getting no warnings or feedback of any kind from the dashboard so I'm inclined to think something's broken with the dashboard rather than that something's wrong with our site from an SEO perspective. From the dashboard: No new messages or recent critical issues. Crawl Errors: No data available. From Health - Index Status: Total indexed 0 Ever crawled 42,490 Not selected 12 Blocked by robots 0 I'm really at a loss here, any help would be appreciated.

• Modular Database Structures

  I have been examining the code base we use in work and I am worried about the size the packages have grown to. The actual code is modular, procedures have been broken down into small functional (and testable) parts. The issue I see is that we have 100 procedures in a single package - almost an entire domain model. I had thought of breaking these packages down - to create sub domains that are centered around the procedure relationships to other objects. Group a bunch of procedures that have 80% of their relationships to three tables etc. The end result would be a lot more packages, but the packages would be smaller and I feel the entire code base would be more readable - when procedures cross between two domain models it is less of a struggle to figure which package it belongs to. The problem I now have is what the actual benefit of all this would really be. I looked at the general advantages of modularity: 1. Re-usability 2. Asynchronous Development 3. Maintainability Yet when I consider our latest development, the procedures within the packages are already reusable. At this advanced stage we rarely require asynchronous development - and when it is required we simply ladder the stories across iterations. So I guess my question is if people know of reasons why you would break down classes rather than just the methods inside of classes? Right now I do believe there is an issue with these mega packages forming but the only benefit I can really pin down to break them down is readability - something that experience gained from working with them would solve.

• Repair ext4 filesystem on USB drive

  Yet another filesystem question. I wanted to use a USB drive that I hadn't mounted for a month or so and was surprised by the fact Ubuntu was unable to mount it. I looked it up in the disk utility and it said it discovered a device with 17 MB instead of 2 GB. The hardware looks intact, I hope for the best for repairing the ext4 filesystem. I followed the instructions from HOWTO: Repair a broken Ext4 Superblock in Ubuntu, but I wasn't successful. # fsck.ext4 -v /dev/sdb e2fsck 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012) ext2fs_open2: Bad magic number in super-block fsck.ext4: Superblock invalid, trying backup blocks... fsck.ext4: Bad magic number in super-block while trying to open /dev/sdb The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 Filesystem blocks are invalid, however when I run the recommended solution to try the alternate superblock, I get the following output: # e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sdb e2fsck 1.42.5 (29-Jul-2012) e2fsck: Invalid argument while trying to open /dev/sdb plus the same error message as in the last paragraph above. Any ideas how to recover the drive? Thank you very much! Edit: testdisk won't help. I'm still stunned why the tools only discover 17 MB.

• Latest update to Ubuntu 13.10 broke Intel graphics drivers

  I'm running a copy of Ubuntu 13.10 on an i7-4771 w/ Intel HD4600 Graphics using a Dell Ultrasharp 1440p monitor via Displayport. Up until today this configuration has been working perfectly, however the latest update appears to have broken my graphics configuration, and xorg is now refusing to go above 1280p resolution. Running xrandr it appears the driver incorrectly thinks my monitor is plugged into the HDMI port and is detecting a max resolution of 1920x1200 instead of 2560x1440. (It's actually plugged in via Displayport). Based on the apt history.log, the latest update was for the kernel. I'm presuming the issue is that the official Intel driver hasn't been updated to support this version? Is there any way to resolve this, or will I need to upgrade to 14.10 to get the latest driver from Intel? • Is individual code ownership important?

  I'm in the midst of an argument with some coworkers over whether team ownership of the entire codebase is better than individual ownership of components of it. I'm a huge proponent of assigning every member of the team a roughly equal share of the codebase. It lets people take pride in their creation, gives the bug screeners an obvious first place to assign incoming tickets, and helps to alleviate "broken window syndrome". It also concentrates knowledge of specific functionality with one (or two) team members making bug fixes much easier. Most of all, it puts the final say on major decisions with one person who has a lot of input instead of with a committee. I'm not advocating for requiring permission if somebody else wants to change your code; maybe have the code review always be to the owner, sure. Nor am I suggesting building knowledge silos: there should be nothing exclusive about this ownership. But when suggesting this to my coworkers, I got a ton of pushback, certainly much more than I expected. So I ask the community: what are your opinions on working with a team on a large codebase? Is there something I'm missing about vigilantly maintaining collective ownership?

• How to improve my email communication

  Paraphrase of an email I sent to a colleague I noticed a problem with System A. I have determined that it is not caused by X. I suspect that it is being caused by Y. (since you are in charge of Y) Can you please take a look at it? (The part in parentheses was not included in my email because this colleague knows full well he is in charge of Y... it should be understood that's why I was sending him the email) I run into the colleague half a day later, and say, "did you look at the problem with System A yet?" and he answers, "Oh, yeah, I got your email about System A being broken but I assumed it was probably caused by X, so I was waiting for you to check on that." Obviously my message did not get communicated. This is an all-too-common result of emails I send and is very discouraging... yet, I don't know how I could make my emails any clearer. They are always as brief, clear, and to the point as I can make them. Any suggestions? Maybe there is something inherent about the medium of email that is just not effective for these types of communications?
