• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • Is it possible to tunnel ICMP over TCP?

  I don't want to tunnel TCP over ICMP (as ptunnel does), I want to go the other way around. I'm in the situation where I have TCP (HTTP) connectivity to a machine but an internal firewall over which I have no control is swallowing pings. The monitoring software I'm using appears to determine connectivity by attempting to send a ping before it tries to just connect to the web service on the target machine. It's failing this ping test and giving up. I believe if I could fool my monitoring software into thinking pings were getting through, it would then connect to the web service and be on its merry way. Anyone know how I can do this? I have SSH and root access on the destination machine.

• Dual-WAN router

  I am looking for a router that would fit the following requirements: Two WAN interfaces: the primary is PPPoE, the secondary will link to a GigE port on another router (a 100Mbps link will suffice); Two (ideally four) GigE LAN ports; No requirement for a firewall; No requirement for Wi-Fi; Inexpensive. The plan for the two WAN interfaces is as follows. All outbound traffic will go to the primary, with exceptions based on destination IP/subnet or possibly on src+dest IPs/subnets. Such exceptions should be routed to the secondary. It would be very nice if, should the primary go down, the secondary would automatically take over for all outbound traffic. I am reasonably sure that I can put something together based on dd-wrt. However, I'd like to hear from you what alternatives are out there (especially something easier to set up for my use case, even if it means paying more for the hardware.)

• Explorer hijacked by a trojan

  I managed to catch a newish trojan that my Anti virus program wasn't able to detect. I'm usually not that bad at technical stuff regarding computers but I really don't know what to do with this one anymore. The trojan somehow managed to get my Windows to recover it every time I try to remove it by deleting it's exe (called some weird name located in Programs "asdza/saddasn.exe" (example only)). It also sets an entry in my autostart. It starts a second explorer.exe and tries to connect to some server obviously trying to steal data. (glad I still have my firewall) How can I get rid of this trojan, I really need help. It is new and probably unrecognized by all major virus scanners.

• Cisco 1841 Box and Watchguard XTM21-W

  I have never set one of these up before and need a little assistance. Right now we have a T1 line coming in from Sprint to a Cisco 1841 and then on to our router. However, when I plug the Cisco 1841 into Port 0 and the router into Port 3 it does not work. In Port 1 I have my management computer plugged in. We have one subnet and this must be easy but I cannot figure out how to make this work. When the firewall is plugged in then I get no internet or network access.

• Self-hosted browser-based remote desktop script?

  I need a self-hosted browser based remote desktop script that will connect me from any PC to my work PC. I need to either host this script within my own dedicated hosting or on my work PC. The PC that I need to remote into is always the one PC (Win7) and the IP never changes, and I have access to the Router/Firewall within. I have tried many remote desktop services and applications - LogMeIn, Team Viewer, (Ultra/Tight) VNC, GoToMyPC and iTeleport Connect and even Windows Remote Desktop - and the web services (or ports) are blocked at whatever free wi-fi/hotel/coffee shop I am at. Note that I will need to be able to access this from any PC, so I won't be able to install any applications (or use any portable software) - hence my thinking that it will need to be browser based on a standard (not blocked) port. If I can set up a web based remote desktop application - really a homebrew LogMeIn - then I should solve my problem. What is the best option here?

  I am on Windows 7 and using Firefox browser. I am using WiFi, but since the morning I cannot access the Internet via the browsers (Firefox, Chrome, or IE). The laptop shows there is Internet connection, Skype is online, but I can't reach the Internet. Then I launched Tor application which creates secure channel and provides its Firefox browser. Well, I can now access the Internet over that browser. So, what might be the problem causing this malfunction? The error: The connection has timed out The server at mail.google.com is taking too long to respond. The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web. • new ubuntu server installation - java server not receiving packets

  I have developed a Java server which listens for UDP packets which come from mobile devices. At the moment, it works correctly if I run my Server on my windows PC. I can receive and respond to the UDP packets sent from my phone (over 3g, not wifi). However, I am trying to run the Server on a different computer which I found lying around my house. I have basically done a clean install of Ubuntu Server edition, updated it, installed the java run time environment and configured port forwarding to allow connections on the appropriate port. I have also tried to disable the firewall. The problem is, it doesn't appear as if the server is receiving any packets and I've exhausted my brain thinking on how to solve/debug the problem. Can anyone suggest to me what the problem might be? or more likely something I can do to help me find out more information about what is going wrong.

• Timeouts when connecting to SQL Server since installing SP1 for Windows 7

  Hi, I just installed SP1 for windows 7 and I have severe performance degradation when connecting to SQL Server 2005 since then. Establishing connection takes more than 30 seconds while it's instantaneous on another computer. Firewall is disabled and I didn't make any change to the configuration. It happens both when trying to connect with a hostname and with an ip address. Everything else seems to be fine (for instance, I'm have no issue connecting to other computers with remote desktop) What can cause such a problem? Thanks in advance! Edit : uninstalling the SP1 solves the issue instantly.

• Modern open source NIDS/HIDS and consoles?

  Years back we set up an IDS solution by placing a tap in front of our exterior firewall, piping all the traffic on our DS1 through an IDS box and then sending the results off to a logging server running ACiD. This was around 2005-ish. I've been asked to revamp the solution and expand on it and looking around, I see that the last release of ACiD was from 2003 and I can't seem to find anything else that seems even remotely up-to-date. While these things may be feature complete, I worry about library conflicts, etc. Can anyone give me suggestions for a Linux/OpenBSD based solution using somewhat modern tools? Just to be clear, I know that Snort is still actively developed. I guess I'm more in the market for a modern open-source web console to consolidate the data. Of course if people have great experiences with IDS' other than Snort I'm happy to hear about it.

• What's required to enable communication between two IP ranges located behind one switch?

  Within our co-located networking closet, we have control over two ranges of 254 addresses, e.g. 64.123.45.0/24 and 65.234.56.0/24. The problem is, if a host has only one IP address, or a block of addresses in only one range, it can't contact any of the addresses in the other subnet. All of our hosts use our hosting provider's respective gateway, e.g. 64.123.45.1 or 65.234.56.1 A host on the 64.123.45.0/24 range can contact the 65.234.56.1 gateway and vice-versa Everything in our closet is connected to an HP ProCurve 2810 (a Layer 2-only switch), which connects through a Juniper NetScreen-25 firewall to the outside world What can I do to enable communication between the two ranges? Is there some settings I can change, or do I need better networking equipment?

• Why is my hosts file not working?

  I've been using the hosts file to for local website development, and it's recently stopped working. No entries other than localhost resolve. I've simplified to test, so it now contains only 127.0.0.1 localhost ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1 test.dev localhost responds to ping, test.dev does not. The file is called hosts with no extension It has no trailing spaces It's saved in C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc which matches the value of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\DataBasePath Oddly, despite UAC being on, I can edit, delete and save the file without admin permissions No proxy is being used, PC is not connected to network for testing Stopping the DNS Client service seemed to resolve the issue for a few minutes, test.dev briefly resolved but doesn't any more. Only firewall is Windows' Machine has been restarted. Is there anything else I should try?

• Apache does not serve non-locally

  I have a freshly installed instance of Fedora Core 16 inside VirtualBox using bridged networking. On it, as root I typed in: yum -y install httpd service httpd start ifconfig Inside the VM, I can open a web browser to 'localhost' and I get the Apache test page. It works. But in Windows (the machine hosting the VM), I point my browser to the IP address returned by ifconfig (192.168.2.122). The connection times out. I can go to a command prompt and ping the VM. Is there a firewall or something that comes with Fedora by default? Or is there something I need to change in a config file?

• How to tunnel port 25565 through SSH?

  I want to play a game which is hosted on port 25565 (minecraft!), but my university firewall does not allow this port. I have a dedicated server running linux not too far from uni, so I think there's a way to tunnel through it (but I've never done this before and have no knowledge/experience of tunnelling) It would probably be slow, but it's better than not being able to play at all. Is it possible to do using only SSH, or do I need other client/server software? My server has OpenSSH installed. Also, the computer I'm using to play the game is running Ubuntu. I've tried searching but there seem to be so many different solutions to different types of problem =/

• SQL server periodically gets disconnected

  Hi, Our environment is: Windows Server 2003, Service Pack 2 SQL Server Express 2005 SQLServer JDBC driver 1.2 (also tried Jtds) Sun JDK 1.6 (we tried this on JDK 1.5 as well) There is no virus protection software on the host, and no firewall is enabled. We have Web application deployed in JBOSS 4.0.2. Our problem is that the JDBC connection to SQL server periodically gets disconnected, and then we can't reconnect to the SQL server at all, unless we physically restart the server on which JBOSS deployed. we are getting following error in log. Software caused connect on abort: recv failed Note: We are able to connect to SQL server using sample java test class. Any suggestions would be most appreciated, as this is a serious, mission-criticial problem for us right now.

  We are trying to set up remote access to a computer that houses a server fro a particular program we are running. The program says we need to configure the office router. In the firewall settings it says to open ports 5345-5351 (TCP only). Port Forwarding: You will also need to forward the same range of ports (5345-5351) to the computer running the Server. This typically requires that the computer running the Server be assigned a static IP on the local network. Having trouble figuring out which IP address we actually need to be using on the client side of this program in order to access the server computer. Can someone walk through this process?? We are working on Mac OSX 10.5. Thank you in advance!

• DSL-504T as dumb ADSL modem

  I am trying to setup an existing DSL-504T ADSL router to work as a dumb modem for a DIR-825 wifi router. I am assuming I should try and move as much of the control to the DIR-825 as possible. It's a PPPoA connection so I don't think I can use bridge mode. Does anyone have any guidance on this? Should I have 2 subnets? Should I set the DIR-825 as the DMZ on the DSL-504T? Do I need to keep NAT and firewall enabled on DSL-504T? Basically I have it working but want to know if I have set it up correctly as I really want the QoS to work on the DIR-825.

  Hi, I apologize for the crudeness of my MSPaint drawing, but please view my diagram of what I'd like to accomplish: Proposed home network architecture Currently, all devices are connected to 1 wireless router. I would like to make my own subnet, with a box in-between my subnet and the shared wireless router, so that I can learn about IDS, traffic analysis, etc. I was also given a cisco PIX firewall to play around with, and it'd be an added bonus if I could incorporate that into my network. The reason for this proposed architecture is so that I can monitor all MY traffic, without seeing anything going on with my roommates' traffic. my MAIN Question is, is it possible to have my desktop connect to the wireless router with internet via wireless card AND share that connection via the ethernet card, hooked to wireless router 2? cable modem - wireless router - desktop pc connected wirelessly - wireless router 2 getting internet from wired connection to desktop pc - laptops connected wirelessly The PIX can be left out for now, but I'm wondering if it could eventually be incorporated? • Email error 'Default email client is not properly installed' after installing Bugzilla 3.6.3 on Windows Home Server 2011

  I have been using Bugzilla fine on the older 32-bit Windows Home Server and I have now started a migration to the newer Windows Home Server 2011 with a new machine and a fresh Bugzilla install of 3.6.3. All goes well until I try to check out the email action and I get 'Could not perform this operation because the defaulty mail client in not properly installed. Is this a security /firewall issue? I dont know enough about servers to know what to look for, so any help will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

  i have a small network, with one valid IP and a firewall with 3 network interfaces (LAN, WAN, DMZ). I want to enable PAT on this valid IP to redirect http traffic to a server in my DMZ. (done) I want to enable MASQ on this ip from traffic that comes from my LAN (done) I want from my LAN as well to access my http server at DMZ. (partially) Question: in the above scenario, i cannot from my LAN, to access my http server in the DMZ, since it has the IP used by the MASQ (the only valid ip that i have). • Barring connections if VPN is down.

  I have a VPN account and use it for sensitive communication. However the VPN connection sometimes is dropped while my main connection to the internet is still alive. The pages I visit through VPN are on HTTP (not secure) and have javascript code which pings the host every minute or so on a timer. So it happens sometimes that the VPN connection is dropped and yet js sends a request to the server (with the cookies). How could I restrict connections so they only happen if the VPN is live?
