• Dual WAN port on a WRT54GL

  Is it possible to reconfigure one of the LAN ports on a WRT54GL (running Tomato firmware) to act as a second WAN port? I have the following networks: PPOE connection to ADSL modem (works fine on the normal WAN port) WiFi neighbourhood network (in 178.X.X.X range), via a Mikrotik routerboard which I'd like to put on the WAN side of the router. I'd then like to set up routing so than some traffic (172.X.X.X) is routed to the Mikrotik and the rest to the ADSL modem. p.s. for practical reasons, I can't use the Mikrotik as the firewall/router. Edit: It seems this can be done by editing iptables, can someone tell me exactly how?

  After installing VS 2010 trial I am getting this error "Generic Host Process For Win32 Services Encountered A Problem and needs to close. When this message pops my computer just stuck and I can not even restart it normally. I have found one fix on net but after that fix I can not access my LAN. This fix change these values in registry. HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\netbt\parameters TransportBindName HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE EnableDCOM If I revert these registry changes then I again start getting 'Generic Host Process For Win32 Services' I have uninstall VS 2010 but this problem persist. This problem is not because of any virus. Any help to fix this or I have to re install Windows. Thanks.

• Site to site VPN using RRAS from an untrusted network?

  Our remote office will be moving to a new space where internet will be provided. They'll be behind a router doing NAT (I do not have admin rights to this router). They will be sharing a printer with the other people on the LAN, but will need VPN to our network for email and file shares. I was thinking of just having them run the windows VPN client and connecting via PPTP like they do when they are off-site, but I have read that multiple PPTP connections from the same NAT'd address to the same destination doesn't work well or at all. I am thinking some kind of site-to-site VPN is needed so there is just one tunnel. Can I just put in a VPN gateway, set it to connect to our RRAS/PPTP server, and have them use it as their default gateway? Perhaps even use the local default gateway for internet traffic. If so, what VPN gateway/device is recommended for this? Or other solutions? Thanks.

• Outlook Search starting date

  I am having a problem with Outlook 2003 search on 2 desktops - 1 XP, 1 Windows 7. They are both connected to the same exchange 2007 server. There are several other users connected to the same server, inside the lan and outside using RPC none of whom are having this issue. When the user searches Outlook, search starts from the date Outlook OST file was created and then searches more recent items. The result is that if user is searching for some phrase, e.g. "Blade" in their inbox folder, search results from months ago are returned first then the more recent results. If i delete the OST file and restart Outlook it rebuilds a new one, and resynchronizes normally, then search works normally again, however approximately 6 weeks later the problem will start again (see second paragraph). Anyone experience this ? Any Suggestions ?

  This time I've got some problem with connection to the internet from my old laptop with ubuntu, I already had some problems with setting up the radio on my network card but I think it works now since it finds some wireless networks. The problem is that I can't connect to my router via wi-fi even if I'm hundred-percently sure the wepkey I punch there is correct, it works via LAN though. Also, I'm not able to ping myself with 127.0.0.1. I'm sorry to say it but I don't think I can stand this shitness for much longer. Although it's much much faster than Windows it's useless since i can't download any libraries for development. If anyone has any experience with this, even indirect, please leave your answer or comment thx

Now we have established a domain controller. Every user has got a domain account. How to include file server into domain so that the permissions would transfer from local accounts to domain accounts? Is it possible to automate this process somehow?

  In Windows 8 Professional, Metro Apps and Windows Update do not work on static IP settings behind authenticated proxy server. They work on DHCP on the same proxy settings. (We have DHCP for wifi and static IP for LAN, both using the same proxy server). IE, Chrome and other desktop apps work nicely on both. Metro apps worked on an auth proxy (DHCP only), when I changed their proxy settings from the 'edit group policy' option. (StartSettingsEdit Group PolicyComputer ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesNetwork IsolationInternet Proxy for Apps) Can this be fixed?

• Can Vista Windows Explorer be repaired/fixed?

  I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on a Sony Vaio laptop. I think somehow my Windows Explorer has become corrupted. I don't recall any certain inciting incident like installing an unreputable 3rd party app or hardware failure but just recently my system won't wake after it's been left idle longer that 20 minutes and goes to sleep. I've also had problems launch certain apps, like Adobe InDesign CS3, that just basically freeze the system but leave mouse movements functioning for a short time before freezing the entire system which requires a hard reboot to resolve the freeze. The system seems to run normally when used but I fear there's a looming possibility that this is a house of cards and will all come crashing down soon. My question is this, can Windows Explorer be repaired/fixed? Before reformatting the system and starting over, which is most likely what I'm going to be forced to do, I'd like explore (no pun intended) my options in fixing the problem with a patch or reinstall or something of that nature. Reformatting my system will eat up a day or two of my time and I just don't have the time to spare right now.

What I've been looking at: - Symantec Exec Backup 2010 System Recovery has an offsite backup but I would need 5 licenses and it doesn't have granular recovery. - Symantec Exec Backup 2010 seems OK but a bit expensive - Microsoft DPM 2010 requires full SQL Standard and for each machine I would need 4 Enterprise licenses. But does it allow Offsite backup without need for additional license and server outside of company (for doing DPM backup of DPM). What other options? This is 10 people company and so the costs matter but also convenience and security. Offsite backup is requirement.

• How to fix Quicktime video color problems on nVidia chipset and Windows XP?

  My laptop frequently plays video as if in very low-color mode. Though the sound remains clear, it looks terrible, showing only a few shades of red, blue, or yellow. (It's even worse than 8-bit color.) The problem doesn't happen consistently, so I'm looking for troubleshooting advice or known solutions. I use a Dell Latitude D620 laptop with Windows XP, on-board nVidia video chipset, Quicktime, and multiple monitors (laptop screen + VGA-connected LCD). Color problems happen in each application I tried, iTunes, a browser, and the Quicktime standalone player. It doesn't happen right after reboot, so could be from a sleep-wake cycle, or at least being on for an extended period. Google results suggest reinstalling nVidia drivers, which I've done several times with no change. I have found 2 workarounds. Reboot, sacrificing significant time and disrupting work In nVidia control panel, change color to 16-bit, and then back to 32-bit This happens with all video playback, so it's definitely not one corrupt file. I use workaround #2 consistently, but would love a longer-term solution.

• unable to access shared drives n win7

  OK, this is doing my head in. Not your usual Win7 sharing problem. Just built a win 7 comp to go onto my home lan and be accessed by all on the network, mostly running XP SP3. Installed it as a single HD+DVD system, got it happy, then added my storage drives, set them up in the right order and letters, rebooted, and shared them. Couldn't access the computer at all from any XP machine. Set the pasword thingy in win7 to NO, and now I can "see" all four shared drives from any machine, but can access only two of them. Please tell me whats going on as I've done nothing different from one drive to the other, just installed and set up drive letters as normal, then shared the damn things. The odd thing about it? the two 1.5T drives that have a lot of data on board are accessable, the two nearly empty 500G ones are not. ANY ideas? Cheers, Colin

• Why is my eth0 getting a dynamic ip when it is configured to be static?

  For some reason our office linux box is being assigned an ip address via dhcp and I don't know why. What is confusing to me is that when I check system-config-network it shows that my eth0 is setup to be a static ip address. And /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 also shows it is setup to be a static ip, yet it is getting a different ip address than the one specified in the ifcfg-eth0. Let me know if you have any suggestions on or ideas on where I can look next. Here are a few details that might help you figure out what an idiot I am :) Fedora 11 Router in front of this box is running dhcp, starting at 10.42.1.100 This box is configured to be 10.42.1.50 (at least I think it is!), subnet 255.255.255.0 (which is same as the router's lan subnet) Instead of having the static IP, this box is getting assigned 10.42.1.100. So I need to install a wireless adapter i had sitting around. But most tutorials I have run across are either out dated, or about ubuntu desktop and talk about things using a GUI. So my question is firstly is there a utility for identifying and downloading drivers for new hardware. that would save my having this problem in the future. • Can a Windows 2003 Active Directory server act as a NTP server?

  Within our LAN, there are two Windows 2003 servers with the Active Directory role. Both these servers have the time service configured to query NTP servers on the internet for the accurate time. That works fine. I've just installed XenServer v5.6 and it's asked me for the IP address of an NTP server. Without tweaking the firewall, I cannot configure this server to reference an internet based NTP server. But can I configure it to use the IP address of the internal AD servers, i.e. do AD servers also act as NTP servers to other computers? Thanks, Rob.

For the most part, the IMAP functionality works beautifully, but I'd like to add one feature if I can: I want Dovecot not to serve large messages to high-latency clients. That is to say, if someone decides that it's a good idea to send me a 9.3mb email to me, I don't want to get it unless I'm on my LAN at home. • Get source and destination of outbound traffic in pfSense

  I'm looking at the traffic graph in pfSense (Version 1.2.2), which we're using as a router / NAT / ect on our network. Recently, I'm seeing a sudden, constant spike of 15 - 30kbps traffic outbound, that is unusual for our network (normally its below 2kbps, we're mostly all inbound traffic) Is there any way to determine what the source of this traffic is, or where it's going? (Just an internal IP address for source, and external IP address for destination would be all I need) I've already tried switching the traffic graph to 'LAN' and watching the host list on the right side, but it seems ... flakey. The numbers it shows seem to fade in and out at random, and the values never add up to anywhere near the graph values. I also explored Gluster and looks good, however, I would rather prefer clustering over Gluster (user space FS). • Troubleshooting a Windows 7 PC that wouldn't sleep

  I have a new Windows 7 PC that wouldn't sleep (not just automatically, but also when specifically told to). The screen goes black momentarily, but within two seconds the machine comes back as if nothing has happened. I tried powercfg energy. This produces some errors quoted at the bottom of this post, plus some warnings about timer resolution. There are no USB devices connected other than wireless keyboard + mouse (Logitech MK250); I tried unplugging them to no effect. The motherboard is Asus P7P55D-E. powercfg lastwake says "Wake History Count - 0", which I take to mean that it never actually went to sleep. I dual boot into Ubuntu, and was having exactly the same problem on the Linux side. That turned out to do with USB 3.0, which I've now disabled in the BIOS. This has solved the problem on the Ubuntu side of things, but made no difference to Windows 7. Any suggestions? Suspend:USB Device not Entering Suspend The USB device did not enter the Suspend state. • Connecting two pcs through cable, at the same time as wireless

  I've got 2 pcs setup with WLAN - however when I copy files between the machines it takes forever (obviously, since I run 801.11g). So I thought, why not just connect them directly with a cable (my wireless router is the other end of the house, that's why I don't use cables to that) However how should I configure the LAN connection on each machine, so I can use it for transferring files between them, whilst using my WLAN to access the Internet ? I was thinking about letting one machine be gateway, but then Windows pops up with a lot of warnings (basically it says this won't work when you're using two disjoint networks) And now I'm at a loss as to what to try.

• Heartbeat won't start up from a cold boot when a failed node is present

  I currently have two ubuntu servers running Heartbeat and DRBD. Let's say one node is down... The servers are directory connected with a 1000Mbps cross over cable on eth1 and have access to a IP camera LAN on eth0 The node that is still functioning won't start up heartbeat and provide access to the drbd resource. I have to manually restart heartbeat by "sudo service heartbeat restart" to get everything up and running. How can I get it to start fine from a cold start? • CheckPoint VPN-1 SecureClient inability to navigate behind a Linksys WAG300N

  I have a Linksys WAG300N, I'm accessing my LAN with Wifi and everything works fine on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. When I try to connect to my company's VPN the connection succeeds, but I cannot access any internet site either within my work network or public site like Yahoo or Google. In my Linksys control panel I already verified all types of VPNs are enable to passthrough. Normal IPSec and Windows VPN worked in the past without any problems. CheckPoint seems to have a solution, but I do not have the ability to change the IP in my client and of course using another NAT device in between is not a solution for me. • My wifi internet router connection resets when more devices connected

  The wifi internet router is connected directly to Internet cable. The main Pc is attached to it via LAN cable, while 1 laptop and 3 mobile phones connect to it via wifi. Whenever 2 or more devices connect via wifi, the internet connection breaks after one minute and internet connection resets. I tracked this behaviour for weeks, and came to conclusion: It seems like some 'device 1' got IP then it went to suspend mode. Then 'device 2' connected to router and got the same IP. Then the 'device 1' woke up from suspend mode and tried to use his old IP. The router sees that 2 same IP addresses exists and automatically reset internet connection. Is this possible? Have I tracked the problem correctly and how to solve it? The router is set to lease 100 IP addresses to devices who try to connect. The password is strong and no hacker's device is being connected to my wifi network. Tried changing password and AP's name.
