• WiX 3: Using heat.exe to add bulk files to a new WiX project: HEAT5150

  If this is a repeat question, please direct me to the existing solution. I wasn't able to find a matching query. We currently use InstallShield. I'm attempting to covert a project with 407 files to a WiX3 installation package. I tried using heat.exe to do some of the automation but I get the following warning for almost every file: c: heat dir "c:\projectDir\projectA" -gg -ke -template:Product -out "c:\install\projectA\heatOutput" heat.exe: warning HEAT5150 : Could not harvest data from a file that was expected to be a SelfReg DLL: c:\projectDir\projectA\plugin1.dll. If this file does not support SelfReg you can ignore this warning. Otherwise, this error detail may be helpful to diagnose the failure: Unable to load file: c:\projectDir\projectA\plugin1.dll, error: 126. Q: Is it normal for this warning to be reported for every file? If there's a current "How To create/convert to your first WiX install project with many files" tutorial, please point me to it. The key requirement is "with many files". Thank-you -Karen Kwong- PS. I know that WiX is designed for incremental install project creation but it would be nice to know if there's an automated way to convert existing install projects.

  Can someone with Kanban experience tell me how Kanban and Scrum differ? What are the pro's and con's of each of the different project management methodologies? Kanban seems to be getting a lot of press these days. I don't want to miss the hottest new way of tracking my teams failures (...and successes). Responses @S. That is a great article but technically no it is not clear enough. That article gives a great amount of detail about kanban (and thank you for it...good read) but it does not specifically contrast Kanban vs. Scrum. That article will help someone like me make a decision but it most certainly won't help someone like my boss or in general someone less experienced! I was hoping for a quick overview of kanban pros and cons contrasted to scrum pros and cons. Thanks though! @S. Lott - Why do you say kanban vs. scrum? What leads you to conclude they are conflicting approaches? Can you make your question more specific? I don't think that they are necessarily conflicting. But they are different enough for a user to adhere to one over the other. Perhaps one fits a project or company better than the other? How would I sell one over the other when presenting a project management approach. Say I went to a company that was currently stuck in the rutt that is "water fall" - why would I sell one approach over the other?

• Google Maps v3: Enforcing min. zoom level when using fitBounds

  I'm drawing a series of markers on a map (using v3 of the maps api). In v2, I had the following code: bounds = new GLatLngBounds(); ... loop thru and put markers on map ... bounds.extend(point); ... end looping map.setCenter(bounds.getCenter()); var level = map.getBoundsZoomLevel(bounds); if ( level == 1 ) level = 5; map.setZoom(level > 6 ? 6 : level); And that work fine to ensure that there was always an appropriate level of detail displayed on the map. I'm trying to duplicate this functionality in v3, but the setZoom and fitBounds don't seem to be cooperating: ... loop thru and put markers on the map var ll = new google.maps.LatLng(p.lat,p.lng); bounds.extend(ll); ... end loop var zoom = map.getZoom(); map.setZoom(zoom > 6 ? 6 : zoom); map.fitBounds(bounds); I've tried different permutation (moving the fitBounds before the setZoom, for example) but nothing I do with setZoom seems to affect the map. Am I missing something? Is there a way to do this?

  Does anybody knows how can component <ice:selectInputDate> be mapped on a java.util.Calendar field, not java.util.Date? I am using from IceFaces version 1.8.2, the component <ice:selectInputDate>. This component requires to be bound with a java.util.Date proeprty. For example, value="#{bean.myDate}", the myDate field must be of type java.util.Date. But I need my date field to be of type java.util.Calendar.   Hopefully, this fictitious example will illustrate my problem: Suppose you are writing a system which tracks complaints for a software product, as well as many other attributes about the product. In this case the SoftwareProduct is our aggregate root and Complaints are entities that only can exist as a child of the product. In other words, if the software product is removed from the system, so shall the complaints. In the system, there is a dashboard like web page which displays many different aspects of a single SoftwareProduct. One section in the dashboard, displays a list of Complaints in a grid like fashion, showing only some very high level information for each complaint. When an admin type user chooses one of these complaints, they are directed to an edit screen which allows them to edit the detail of a single Complaint. The question is: what is the best way for the edit screen to retrieve the single Complaint, so that it can be displayed for editing purposes? Keep in mind we have already established the SoftwareProduct as an aggregate root, therefore direct access to a Complaint should not be allowed. Also, the system is using NHibernate, so eager loading is an option, but my understanding is that even if a single Complaint is eager loaded via the SoftwareProduct, as soon as the Complaints collection is accessed the rest of the collection is loaded. So, how do you get the single Complaint through the SoftwareProduct without incurring the overhead of loading the entire Complaints collection?

Any ideas? Why do I keep on seeing some old version of regexes when I try to load that page even though I changed my urls.py?

• Code Golf: Collatz Conjecture

  Inspired by http://xkcd.com/710/ here is a code golf for it. The Challenge Given a positive integer greater than 0, print out the hailstone sequence for that number. The Hailstone Sequence See Wikipedia for more detail.. If the number is even, divide it by two. If the number is odd, triple it and add one. Repeat this with the number produced until it reaches 1. (if it continues after 1, it will go in an infinite loop of 1 -> 4 -> 2 -> 1...) Sometimes code is the best way to explain, so here is some from Wikipedia function collatz(n) show n if n > 1 if n is odd call collatz(3n + 1) else call collatz(n / 2) This code works, but I am adding on an extra challenge. The program must not be vulnerable to stack overflows. So it must either use iteration or tail recursion. Also, bonus points for if it can calculate big numbers and the language does not already have it implemented. (or if you reimplement big number support using fixed-length integers) Test case Number: 21 Results: 21 -> 64 -> 32 -> 16 -> 8 -> 4 -> 2 -> 1 Number: 3 Results: 3 -> 10 -> 5 -> 16 -> 8 -> 4 -> 2 -> 1 Also, the code golf must include full user input and output.

• How to handle ViewModel and Database in C#/WPF/MVVM App

  I have a task management program with a "Urgency" field. Valid values are Int16 currently mapped to 1 (High), 2 (Medium), 3 (Low), 4 (None) and 99 (Closed). The urgency field is used to rank tasks as well as alter the look of the items in the list and detail view. When a user is editing or adding a new task they select or view the urgency in a ComboBox. A Converter passes Strings to replace the Ints. The urgency collection is so simple I did not make it a table in the database, instead it is a, ObservableCollection(Int16) that is populated by a method. Since the same screen may be used to view a closed task the "Closed" urgency must be in the ItemsSource but I do not want the user to be able to select it. In order to prevent the user from being able to select that item in the ComboBox but still be able to see it if the item in the database has that value should I... Manually disable the item in the ComboBox in code or Xaml (I doubt it) Change the Urgency collection from an Int16 to an Object with a Selectable Property that the isEnabled property of the ComboBoxItem Binds to. Do as in 2 but also separate the urgency information into its own table in the database with a foreign key in the Tasks table None of the above (I suspect this is the correct answer) I ask this because this is a learning project (My first real WPF and first ever MVVM project). I know there is rarely one Right way to do something but I want to make sure I am learning in a reasonable manner since it if far harder to Unlearn bad habits Thanks Mike

  I have a WCF service which can run as Console App and a Windows Service. I have exactly the same code, but running in a windows service and I get the following error when I try to call any of the methods from a client: System.ServiceModel.Security.MessageSecurityException was unhandled Message="An unsecured or incorrectly secured fault was received from the other party. See the inner FaultException for the fault code and detail." Source="mscorlib" StackTrace: Server stack trace: at System.ServiceModel.Channels.SecurityChannelFactory`1.SecurityRequestChannel.ProcessReply(Message reply, SecurityProtocolCorrelationState correlationState, TimeSpan timeout) ...... (lots of stacktrace info - not very useful) InnerException: System.ServiceModel.FaultException Message="An error occurred when verifying security for the message." The exception tells me nothing. I'm assuming that it has something to do with acces to system resources from the Windows Service. I've tried running it under the same account as the console app, but no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Creating a drop-down row in displaytag

  I am currently using displaytag for tabular data, but would like to create a "kayak.com-like" interface where when a user clicks a row, the user is shown more details about the particular row without a page refresh. I tried using a decorator to return javascript that would do this. The javascript is executed, but it is only reflected in the column where it was rendered. I am looking to create a new row with the data. e.g.: public class CustomDecorator extends TableDecorator { public String getDetailsRow() { MyObject object = (MyObject)this.getCurrentRowObject(); return "<a onClick=\"myjsfunction(object.getId()); return true\">Details</a>"; } } ...and in the JSP I would have a detailsRow property nested between the display:table tags: <display:column property="detailsRow" sortable="false" /> Any tips on how to create a new row? The solution may be in the way that the javascript is written - I'm not an expert with Javascript, so any tips would be appreciated. Is there a better way to do this with displaytag? I don't know of any explicit integration that displaytag has with javascript (like an "onclick" parameter) either. This is my first question on stackoverflow, btw - so please let me know whether you need more detail.

• JSF Page does not submit when onclick javascript is added to menu item?

  I show some detail using popup windows. I want to close those when the user clicks on sign-out link. I have a JavaScript function that'll close the windows. The sign-out link is rendered using Navigation MenuModel. When I remove/comment the "onclick" part, the page gets submitted properly. I use MyFaces Trinidad.

  I am new to CSLA and Entity Framework. I am creating a new CSLA / Silverlight application that will replace a 12 year old Win32 C++ system. The old system uses a custom DCOM business object library and uses ODBC to get to SQL Server. The new system will not immediately replace the old system -- they must coexist against the same database for years to come. At first I thought EF was the way to go since it is the latest and greatest. After making a small EF model and only 2 CSLA editable root objects (I will eventually have hundreds of objects as my DB has 800+ tables) I am seriously questioning the use of EF. In the current system I have the need many times to do fine detail performance tuning of the queries which I can do because of 100% control of generated SQL. But it seems in EF that so much happens behind the scenes that I lose that control. Article like http://toomanylayers.blogspot.com/2009/01/entity-framework-and-linq-to-sql.html don't help my impression of EF. People seem to like EF because of LINQ to EF but since my criteria is passed between client and server as criteria object it seems like I could build queries just as easily without LINQ. I understand in WCF RIA that there is query projection (or something like that) where I can do client side LINQ which does move to the server before translation into actual SQL so in that case I can see the benefit of EF, but not in CSLA. If I use raw ADO.NET, will I regret my decision 5 years from now? Has anyone else made this choice recently and which way did you go?

• Display ASP.NET GridView inside a selected row in another GridView

  I have been given a mockup that I do not know is possible to code in ASP.NET without being a real html and javascript wizard. I want a GridView that when a row is selected, the selected row expands and below the selected row a panel of additional information is shown, which would also include another small GridView. The idea is this would all be in-line. So if the user selected row 4, then the additional information would appear below row 4 and then after the additional information the parent GridView would continue with row 5. Ultimately I would want to do a multi-select type of set up, but first I need to figure out if this is even possible. Also, the solution must be 508 Compliant The one solution I considered was using only one "column". Then I would put all my fields in the ItemTemplate, and my detail panel content in the EditItemTemplate and instead of selecting the row, set it to edit mode. The problem with this solution is I lose the functionality of multiple columns if I throw everything in one huge ItemTemplate. Any and all suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

• iPhone TableView alternative options for Check Mark Accessory

  I'm looking for the best approach to this problem. In my tableview I have a list of options from which you can select one and only one. The problem is the selection to choose is not obvious without displaying more details on the option. If I use the disclosure indicator or button for the more detail, I lose the checkmark functionality. In searching around I see some have used the cell Image as a work around. I see others instead of using the standard disclosure button have created custom disclosure button looking like a checkmark. Haven't seen this one but is it viable (HIG) to add a button in the cell ('more info') to launch the next tableview. My thought was to use a disclosure indicator and on the second view in the navigation bar (where the edit button usually is) add a 'selectMe' button. I think I am probably manage to code either of the above, am just asking for information on what is the best (HIG) way. Example Option 1 Option 2 Option 3 (x) Option 4 Where x is the checked one But in order to know which is the best choice you need to see Option 3 (Header) Option 3-a Option 3-b Option 3-c Option 3-d Where even at this level option 3-c might have additional information. Any guidance you can provide would appreciated.

• nHibernate, Automapping and Chained Abstract Classes

  I'm having some trouble using nHibernate, automapping and a class structure using multiple chains of abstract classes It's something akin to this public abstract class AbstractClassA {} public abstract class AbstractClassB : AbstractClassA {} public class ClassA : AbstractClassB {} When I attempt to build these mappings, I receive the following error "FluentNHibernate.Cfg.FluentConfigurationException was unhandled Message: An invalid or incomplete configuration was used while creating a SessionFactory. Check PotentialReasons collection, and InnerException for more detail. Database was not configured through Database method." However, if I remove the abstract keyword from AbstractClassB, everything works fine. The problem only occurs when I have more than one abstract class in the class hierarchy. I've manually configured the automapping to include both AbstractClassA and AbstractClassB using the following binding class public class BindItemBases : IManualBinding { public void Bind(FluentNHibernate.Automapping.AutoPersistenceModel model) { model.IncludeBase<AbstractClassA>(); model.IncludeBase<AbstractClassB>(); } } I've had to do a bit of hackery to get around this, but there must be a better way to get this working. Surely nHibernate supports something like this, I just haven't figured out how to configure it right. Cheers, James

• Using CakePHP with GoDaddy IIS 7 IIS7 and Microsoft URL Rewriter

  Hi, I'm trying to move a CakePHP app from a Windows Apache setup to a GoDaddy shared IIS7 setup. It's been easy to migrate except for the Apache mod_rewrite part -- which obviously wouldn't work in IIS7. I basically have no url rewriting capability, which is crucial for Cake to work. GoDaddy now offers MS URL Rewriter, but they don't offer technical support for it. I haven't seen any blog post that discusses how to do this in detail. I'd really like to avoid third-party software, especially since GoDaddy provides MS URL Rewriter, which ought to be more than sufficient. The mod_rewrite directives that will allow Cake to work on GoDaddy look ridiculously easy (pasted below); can someone help me convert it to a web.config I can use with URL Rewriter? The URL Rewriter manual is really long and complicated. I'd rather not have to read the whole thing if I don't have to.   Hi All, I'm trying to get the height of a html window's content. This is the full height of the content not the visible height. I have had some (very limited) success using: document.getElementsByTagName('html')[0].offsetHeight in FireFox. This however fails in IEs and it fails in Chrome when using absolute positioned elements (http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=38999). I've followed Microsoft's instructions for creating signed friend assemblies and I can't see where I'm going wrong. So I'll detail my steps here and hopefully someone can spot my deliberate mistake...? Create a strong name key and extract the public key, thus: sn -k StrongNameKey sn -p public.pk sn -tp public.pk Add the strong name key to each project and enable signing. • Does Google Maps API v3 allow larger zoom values ?

  If you use the satellite GMapType using this Google-provided example in v3 of the API, the maximum zoom level has a scale of 2m / 10ft , whereas using the v2 version of another Google-provided example (had to use another one since the control-simple doesn't have the scale control) yields the maximum scale of 20m / 50ft. Is this a new "feature" of v3 ? I have to mention that I've tested the examples in the same GLatLng regions - so my guess is that tile detail level doesn't influence it, am I mistaken ? As mentioned in another question, v3 is to be considered of very Labs-y/beta quality, so use in production should be discouraged for the time being. I've been drawn to the subject since I have to "increase the zoom level of a GMap", the answers here seem to suggest using GTileLayer, and I'm considering GMapCreator, although this will involve some effort. What I'm trying to achieve is to have a larger zoom level, a scale of 2m / 10ft would be perfect, I have a map where the tiles aren't that hi-res and quite a few markers. Seeing that the area doesn't have hi-res tiles, the distance between the markers is really tiny, creating some problematic overlapping. Or better yet, how can you create a custom Map which allows higher zoom levels, as by the Google Campus, where the 2m / 10ft scale is achieved, and not use your own tileserver ? I've seen an example on a fellow Stackoverflower's GMaps sandbox , where the tiles are manually created based on the zoom level. I don't think I'm making any more sense, so I'm just going to end this big question here, I've been wondering around trying to find a solution for hours now. Hope that someone comes to my aid though ! Thank you in advance !

• Clear UIWebView content upon dismissal of modal view (iPhone OS 3.0)

  I currently have a UIWebView that is displayed within a modal view. It is basically a detail view that provides a view of a page when the user clicks a link. When the view is dismissed and then brought up again (when the user clicks another link), the previously-loaded content is still visible and the new content loads "on top" of the last content. This makes sense because the instance of the UIWebView persists between sessions and is only released when the memory is needed. However, I would like to completely clear the UIWebView when the modal view is dismissed so that 1) content is cleared and 2) memory is freed. Thus far my research and attempts have not found an answer.
