  It was suggested that I repost this questions as I didn't do a very good job discribing my issue the first time. (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2921286/access-question) THE SITUATION: I have inspections from many months of many years. Sometimes there is more than one inspection in a month, sometimes there is no inspection. However, the report that is desired by the clients requires that I have EXACTLY ONE record per month for the time frame they request the report. They understand the data issues and have stated that if there is more than one inspection in a month to take the latest one. If the is not an inspection for that month, go back in time untill you find one and use that one. I will now say what I have tried. Although if someone else has a better approach, I am perfectly willing to throw away what I have done and do it differently... STEP 1: create a query that removes the duplicates from the data. Ie. only one record per equip_id for each month/year, keeping the latest one. (done successfully) STEP 2: create a table of the date ranges the client wants the report for. (This is done dynamically at runtime) This table two field, Month and Year. So if the client wants a report from FEb 2008 to March 2010 the table would look like: Month Year 2 2008 3 2008 . . . 12 2008 1 2009 . . . 12 2009 1 2010 2 2010 3 2010 I then left joined this table with my query from step 1. So now I have a record for every month and every year that they want the report for, with nulls(or blanks) or sometimes 0s (not sure why, access is weird, but sometiems they are nulls and sumtimes they are 0s...) for the runtimes that are not avaiable. I don't particurally like this solution, but ill do it if i have to. (this is also done successfully) STEP 3: Fill in the missing runtime values. This I HAVE NOT done successfully. Note that if the request range for the report is feb 2008 to march 2010 and the oldest record for a particular equip_id is say june 2008, it is O.K. for the runtimes to be null (or zeros) for feb - may 2008. I am working with the following query for this step: SELECT equip_id as e_id,year,month, (select top 1 runhours from qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month a where a.equip_id = e_id order by year,month) FROM qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month where runhours is null or runhours = 0; UNION SELECT equip_id, year, month, runhours FROM qry_1_c_One_Record_per_Month WHERE .runhours Is Not Null And runhours <> 0 However I clearly can't check the a.equip_id = e_id ... so i don't have anyway to make sure i'm looking at the correct equip_id SUMMARY: So like i said i'm willing to throw away any part, or all of what I tried.   Hi, I need to create a handover document for a fairly large system consisting of all the stuff you'd expect from a telecom deployment: many servers, database clusters which copy some data between them in specific ways, tons of log files, both off-the-shelf and locally developed software, scripts, network configurations, local know-how, etc. It's really got as many sysadmin-typical elements, as development ones. The target of this document are in the first place sysadmins who take over the day-to-day operation tasks and some problem resolving, and in the second place people who want to learn about the system in general. Is there some place I can learn about how to write something like that? It could just as easily be a 10 page "what's where", as a 500 pages book about "all things telephony". Maybe it should be more than one document really. Please link some useful resources / books I could use for this task. PS: this is intended to be internal only, customer interactions etc. are out of scope here

  There are several guidelines for error reporting, that are usually based on giving to the user useful information when he or she does something wrong, but to give this kind of information you need to be handling the error and know that it can happen. There are also tons of articles about designing 404 error pages. But, what can you do when it's a new, unhandled error provoked by a failure in the shoftware? Are there some guidelines about how to nicely report totally unexpected errors in a web site, as an unexpected error 500? What header message should be shown in that case? something like "Sorry, an unexpected error has ocurred" would be enough? What information should be given? Should it have mechanisms to help to report the failure to developers? Which ones?

  Hello, I wonder if anyone knows how could I rename multiple files, all of them originally named with same structure, and add some data extracted from a mysql DB according to specifics rules. For example I have 500 files named with this vars: ID NAME ADDRESS PHONE.wav = 1234567 PAULSIMON WESTDR122 9942213456.wav Now I need to rename files taking some data from the databases for each file, and append the data from a query appended to the filename. For example add the data resulting from a query Where some conditions match, and the data to build the query is taked from original file name, as ID or NAME. i other words, lets say that I want to build a query taking ID & NAME from file 1234567 PAULSIMON WESTDR123 9942213456.wav as WHERE statements to take another value as BirthDATE and add this to new filename, so final result should be: ID NAME ADDRESS PHONE BIRTHDATE.wav I will appreciate any help on this. I need this to be done on a LINUX server.

  I have a folder where files are going to be dropped for importing into my data warehouse. \\server\share\loading_area I have the following (inherited) code that uses xp_cmdshell shivers to call out to the command shell to run the DIR command and insert the resulting filenames into a table in SQL Server. I would like to 'go native' and reproduce this functionality in SSIS. Thanks in advance guys and girls. • paintComponent method is not displaying anything on the panel

  I have been trying to debug this for hours. The program is supposed to be a grapher that graphs coordinates, but i cannot get anything to display not even a random line, but if i put a print statement there it works. It is a problem with the paintComponent Method.   How do you manage your sql server database build/deploy/migrate for visual studio projects? We have a product that includes a reasonable database part (~100 tables, ~500 procs/functions/views), so we need to be able to deploy new databases of the current version as well as upgrade older databases up to the current version. Currently we maintain separate scripts for creation of new databases and migration between versions. Clearly not ideal, but how is anyone else dealing with this? This is complicated for us by having many customers who each have their own db instance, rather than say just having dev/test/live instances on our own web servers, but the processes around managing dev/test/live for others must be similar.

• Popular open source projects using Zend Framework

  Hello, I am trying to find any open source project based on Zend Framework. Something well written and as popular as Wordpress or Drupal to see actual benefits of ZF as well as possibly use it as an example. The only 'showcase' I managed to find is http://framework.zend.com/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=14134. But this list looks confusing as for the 'official' PHP framework. The same is about ZF statistics by numbers (http://framework.zend.com/about/numbers) - 10 million downloads against 400 actual projects which is less than 500 examples in the user guide... Also Yahoo chose Symfony for their bookmarks service not ZF... Am I missing something? Thank you!

• What technologies are appropriate for a human workflow system?

  I'm researching various workflow architectures and it is overwhelming. The workflow system I am creating will be almost completely human-driven. Very little, if any, asynchronous activity will be taking place. One possibility is to simply use a RDBMS and have a task table, from which stored procedures would be used to enforce synchronous access to each task. This seems very simple, but I'm having a hard time coming up with reasons why I might need to involve a heavier solution. If my system has ~500 concurrent users, and there is very little in the way of automated or asynchronous tasks, should I even consider the various workflow patterns/packages out there like Mule, BPEL/SOA, Spring Work Flow, etc?

• Jquery dialog box - doesn't fade out before closing

  I have div(box) on my page and I'm using this script to display div as dialog box. Inside that div I have a hyper link, On click of the hyper link I want to fade out the dialog box and close.. The content of the dialog fades out, but the border of the dialog box remains same. If I add $("#box").dialog('close') to the click function after fadeto there is no effect.. it just closes the dialog box completely. • Treating a fat webservice in .net 3.5 c#

  I'm dealing with an obese 3rd party webservice that returns about 3mb of data for a simple search results, about 50% of the data in that response is junk. Would it make sense then to remap this data to my own result object and ditch the response so I'm storing 1-2 mb in memory for filtering and sorting rather than using the web-responses own object and using 2-4 or am I missing a point? So far I've been accessing the webservice from a separate project and using a new class to provide the interaction and to handle the persistence so my project looks like this |- Web (mvc2 proj) |- DAL (database/storage fluent-nhibernate) |- SVCGateway (interaction layer + webservice related models) |- Services -------------- |- Tests |- Specs I'm trying to make the application behave fast and I also need to store the result set temporarily in case a customer goes to view the product and wants to go back to the results.   I have an single array of Hierarchical categories. Index of the array is the category_id like:: [8846] => Array ( [category_id] => 8846 [title] => Tsting two [description] => Tsting two [subtype] => categories [type] => object [level] => 2 [parent_category] => 8841 [tags] => new [name] => Tsting two ) each value has its parent_category value, I have around 500 elements in the array, what is the best way to make it. Process i followed: krsort categories array, so that all the child categories are at the beginning, then function makeHierarchical() { foreach($this->categories as $guid => $category) { if($category['level'] != 1) $this->multilevel_categories[$category['parent_category']][$guid] = $category; } } but this is not working, it does it only for first level. Can someone point out me the error.

  Hello, Is there a way to shortcut this: function a($where){ echo $where; } function b(){ a(basename(__FILE__).'::'.__FUNCTION__.'()::'.__LINE__); } to something like this: define("__myLocation__", ''.basename(__FILE__).'::'.__FUNCTION__.'()::'.__LINE__.''); function a($where){ echo $where; } function b(){ a(__mYLocation_); } I know that this cannot be done with constants (is just an theoretical example), but I can't find a way to shorthen my code. If a use a function to get my line it will get the line where that function is not the line from where the function was called. I usualy call a function that prints directly to the log file, but in my log I need to know from where the function was called, so i use basename(__FILE__).'::'.__FUNCTION__.'()::'.__LINE__ this will print something like: index.php::b()::6 It is a lot of code when you have over 500 functions in different files. Is there a shorten or better way to do this? Thank you.

If I click another .menu-item a when #menu-2 is open what happens? The script close and open another submenu correctly but my #menu-2 close only close. And then if I close .menu-item a so... #menu-2 open. How can I do to fix?

• TStringList and TThread that does not free all of its memory

  Version used: Delphi 7. I'm working on a program that does a simple for loop on a Virtual ListView. The data is stored in the following record: type TList=record Item:Integer; SubItem1:String; SubItem2:String; end; Item is the index. SubItem1 the status of the operations (success or not). SubItem2 the path to the file. The for loop loads each file, does a few operations and then, save it. The operations take place in a TStringList. Files are about 2mb each. Now, if I do the operations on the main form, it works perfectly. Multi-threaded, there is a huge memory problem. Somehow, the TStringList doesn't seem to be freed completely. After 3-4k files, I get an EOutofMemory exception. Sometimes, the software is stuck to 500-600mb, sometimes not. In any case, the TStringList always return an EOutofMemory exception and no file can be loaded anymore. On computers with more memory, it takes longer to get the exception. The same thing happens with other components. For instance, if I use THTTPSend from Synapse, well, after a while, the software cannot create any new threads because the memory consumption is too high. It's around 500-600mb while it should be, max, 100mb. On the main form, everything works fine. I guess the mistake is on my side. Maybe I don't understand threads enough. I tried to free everything on the Destroy event. I tried FreeAndNil procedure. I tried with only one thread at a time. I tried freeing the thread manually (no FreeOnTerminate...) No luck. So here is the thread code. It's only the basic idea; not the full code with all the operations. If I remove the LoadFile prodecure, everything works good. What could be the problem? I thought at one point that, maybe, too many threads are created. If a user loads 1 million files, well, ultimately, 1 million threads is going to be created -- although, only 50 threads are created and running at the same time. Thanks for your input.

• ASP.NET MVC - how to modify requested URLs?

  The baidu spider seems to be adding ¤ to end of some crawled urls (it seems that it happens with urls containing single unicode character as the last character) The baidu-requested url looks like this: site.com/abc/ä¤ while site.com/abc/ä is the valid url and as linked from many places on my site. The internal problem is that a different route is matched for this kind of url and an unhandled exception occurs. I would not like to lose baidu because of too many 500 errors on the site. I would like to change the requested URL to a different URL by removing the added character before any ASP.NET MVC processing of the request starts. Can I write a request filter/http module or something similar in ASP.NET MVC to remove the trailing '¤' from the urls? I would not like to alter my routes to counter-hack this behavior.
