• Slick PHP based image manager for managing user profile images

  Hi, I'm just throwing this out there as I'm plodding my way through creating a Member Photo album on a site i'm working on, where they can login and upload their photos to a personal gallery. I want this to be nice and lightweight, but still slick and "modern" with a modal based interface for the user. I'm surprised though that there is seemingly nothing open source out there which fits the bill - I've done a few searches on Google to no avail and can't seem to find anything. Lots of bloated photo galleries out there but nothing looks like it has been developed using more recent technologies. Is anyone aware of anything which might suit what I'm looking for? I'm fully prepared to try and code it myself but I'd be delighted if I didn't have to! Pure laziness you might say, but there's no point reinventing the wheel.

  I'm intending to design (and provide a reference implementation for) a new Swing Rich Client Framework. My job and personal experience covers many project-specific Swing client frameworks as well as the Eclipse RCP, and every one of them had some original and clever concepts, but also drawbacks and rigid realizations. My plan is to incorporate the best of those concepts and features into a new framework whose core is very open and extendable. For my must-have-features list, I'm counting on your input and hope you can share some concept pearls & diamonds you've encountered in other frameworks, or features you always wanted to have or have in a better way. The framework is intended for very simple to very complex and sophisticated projects for clients that need full i18n for richt clients that execute some or all of the non-presentation logic on the server to be very lightweight to be easy to learn and use Thanks in advance for sharing your insights :)

• MVC Pass textbox to controller if not in a form tag

But due to some personal reasons I had to stay away from work for a period of 5 years.Now I am finding it hard to get back in. • Casting Class into String and Vice Versa in JAVA

  I have a program in which I need to store a Class object into memory by casting it into String. Is it possible to convert the String back into the original Class so that I can use that class variables? I am doing this in JAVA. • SQL Database dilemma : Optimize for Querying or Writing?

  I'm working on a personal project (Search engine) and have a bit of a dilemma. At the moment it is optimized for writing data to the search index and significantly slow for search queries. The DTA (Database Engine Tuning Adviser) recommends adding a couple of Indexed views inorder to speed up search queries. But this is to the detriment of writing new data to the DB. It seems I can't have one without the other! This is obviously not a new problem. What is a good strategy for this issue?

• PHP exec() hangs, Error 500

  So, my plan is to make small thumbnails of URL's with PHP and IECapt. IECapt works well, a nice command line tool, gets the full sized image of specified URL in 1 to 4 seconds. But my problem is to execute it trough PHP. This is the code I've trying to get working: exec('IECapt.exe ' . escapeshellarg($URL) . ' ' . escapeshellarg($Filename)) $URL is of course the URL, and $filename is a simplified version of the URL. Sometimes I get the IECapt to snap the image(trough PHP), but it takes awfully long (30-60s), and in the end I always get a 500-error, with no error messages to tell me what's wrong. Both variables are fine, they work manually with commandline: IECapt http://google.com Google.png My server set-up is IIS7 and PHP5.2.9, if relevant. (Windows Vista, all on my personal computer, so full access.) Any ideas?

• How to ensure project management questions get answered

  Background: On a new project I've found myself 3 levels removed from my actual source of information. I report to my PM, who reports to our contractor, who reports to the actual client. Getting answers to questions has become something of a problem and I'm curious to know what people recommend. Needs: I'm trying to find a technology or disciplined strategy that will assist me in ensuring that the questions I'm asking are getting answered: Correctly without much modification of the original question Quickly so the original context isn't lost Completely so that if a question is deferred I don't forget about it. • Is there anything wrong with a class with all static methods?

  I'm doing code review and came across a class that uses all static methods. The entrance method takes several arguments and then starts calling the other static methods passing along all or some of the arguments the entrance method received. It isn't like a Math class with largely unrelated utility functions. In my own normal programming, I rarely write methods where Resharper pops and says "this could be a static method", when I do, they tend to be mindless utility methods. Is there anything wrong with this pattern? Is this just a matter of personal choice if the state of a class is held in fields and properties or passed around amongst static methods using arguments?

  Hy guys, I am developing a personal blog in asp.net mvc 1.0! So, I need in some pages to disable validaterequest because, I have to insert html text! For example.. in the page "Insert Post", "Edit Post".. I need to insert html! I read on web that's necessary to disable validaterequest directly in page with attribute validaterequest = "false" or in webconfig file! I tryied all ways, but when I insert in my textarea html code, I get always the error of potential value dangerous! Any solutions?

• Interface with inner implementation - good or bad

  I am working on a project with many someInterface - someInterfaceImpl-pairs. Some days ago I got the idea (probably inspired by reading some objective c code) to include the default implementations as an inner class. Now some colleagues (all with much more java experience than me) saw this idea - feedback was between shocked and surprised ("this is working?"). I googled around a bit but didn't find much evidence of usefulness of this "pattern" (personal i like it): pdf-paper and a faq about code style What do you think - especially in those cases where an "default" implementation is tightly coupled to an interface. • How can I know if a computer supports hardware-assisted virtualization before I purchase the computer?

  I'm an iPhone programmer who is no longer in possession of a personal Mac computer on which to use XCode. I have two Windows desktops, and I would like to run OS X in VMWare rather than purchase Apple's expensive hardware. However, neither of my machines supports hardware-assisted virtualization, which is required to virtualize OS X. I went shopping online for a computer today, since I've been planning to purchase a laptop anyway, but sites like Best Buy don't appear to give any indication of whether or not a product supports this. Is there any other site out there or some trick to figuring this out other than buying the machine and running Microsoft's nifty little detection tool?

• What are the exact versions of stuff you had to install in order to be able to step-debug a Scala pr

  How do YOU debug a Scala program? I mean YOU as in the person posting the Answer :) Please answer only from personal experience, not from stuff you've heard or read on the Internet. You should not believe everything you read on the Internet, especially tales of complex open-source software configurations that actually work :-) The are many Java tools which claim to support Scala in some way or another, but I have so far struck out in trying to get any one of them to actually let me set a breakpoint in Scala code and step through it. These are big, major open-source IDEs I'm talking about here. The main problem in getting a debugger to work seems to be the "version hell" with fast-changing IDEs, Plug-Ins, JDKs, and the Scala language itself. Hence the second part of my question, which is really the most important part: What is the exact version number of the IDE, Plug-In, JDK, Scala, and even Operating System, that you are successfully using? • Use LINQ to insert data from dataset to SQL

  Let's say I have a dataset in an ASP.NET website (.NET 3.5) with 5 tables, each has roughly 30,000 rows and an average of 12 columns. I want to insert all of the data from the dataset into 5 very-similar-but-not-quite-identical tables in SQL Server 2008. I also want to use LINQ (personal preference - trying to learn something new). Is it as simple as iterating through the dataset and, for each row, creating a new instance of the associated class, initializing its data with the dataset's row, adding it to the data model, and then doing one giant SubmitChanges at the end? Are there better ways of doing this with LINQ? Or is this the de-facto standard?

• Handling the distinction between undefined- and null-parameters in JavaScript

  I know very well that null and undefined are distinct in JavaScript. However, I can't seem to decide whether or not use that fact when my own functions are passed one of those as its argument. Or, expressed in a different way, should myFoo(undefined) return the same thing as myFoo(null) or is everything fine if it doesn't? Or, in yet another case, since myBar(1, 2, 3) is the same thing as myBar(1, 2, 3, undefined, undefined), should myBar(1, 2, 3, null, null) return the same thing as myBar(1, 2, 3)? I feel that there's potential for confusion in both cases and that a library should probably follow a convention when handling null/undefined. I'm not really asking for personal opinions (so please express those as comments rather than answers). I'm asking if anyone knows if there is a best practice that one should stick to when it comes to handling this distinction. References to external sources are very welcome!

• How do you deal with the more mundane parts of programming tasks?

  My experience as a developer is that many projects or tickets are a mix of a short and focused very interesting task (e.g., designing some API or a platform to solve something) and a lot of repetitive and mundane tasks that cannot be automated (such as certain refactorings to use the API or platform, implementation of certain tests, some GUI handling, etc). I believe that this is the nature of our profession, unless we are high-level architects or managements and can delegate this work. The only item in my personal arsenal when dealing with these tasks is to devote some of my attention to radio or audiobooks (preferably not in English as I find it hard to concentrate on two "streams" of English at the same time). I maintain sufficient attention to carry the task and don't lose concentration as fast. I'm wondering how others cope with these and maintain concentration.

• Will I have legal issues if I attach this 'free' font using @font-face?

It is free but it has the following written in the license file: Use by more than 25 Users, or equivalent Website Visitors, is a breach of this Free Licence Agreement, and instead requires a commercial licence. This is what I understand: If it is used in a company with more than 25 employees then it requires commercial license? If the website gets more than 25 visits per month it requires commercial license? Not sure if I got it wrong, but it doesn't make too much sense to me (specially the second statement. I want to use it in my personal portfolio were I provide web design services. Do I need a commercial license?

• What's the deal with a leading underscore in PHP class methods?

  While looking over various PHP libraries I've noticed that a lot of people choose to prefix some class methods with a single underscore, such as public function _foo() ...instead of... public function foo() I realize that ultimately this comes down to personal preference, but I was wondering if anyone had some insight into where this habit comes from. My thought is that it's probably being carried over from PHP 4, before class methods could be marked as protected or private, as a way of implying "do not call this method from outside the class". However, it also occurred to me that maybe it originates somewhere (a language) I'm not familiar with or that there may be good reasoning behind it that I would benefit from knowing. Any thoughts, insights and/or opinions would be appreciated.

• Need suggestions on which web frameworks to use?

  I want to build a site where people can create their personal websites quickly. All their websites will be hosted on my single web application (i.e. there will be only one database which contains info of all the websites). Each person will have an account where he can customize his website (template, content etc.). They can access their website from .mysite.com or mysite.com/xyz. I should be able to add different modules frequently, which will immediately reflect in all the websites created through my site. Based on the above requirements, please suggest me if there are any frameworks to use which can ease my job. Also suggest me which language to use (php or java). Which one would be better.

• How do I turn a PDF email attachment to an image (jpg) in a PHP page?

  Hi guys. Long time viewer, first time question asker. I'm trying to have my personal website parse through my mail box for attachments from a certain subscription list, and then be able to view the PDF attachments as images, preferably jpg. With the help of this: http://www.linuxscope.net/articles/mailAttachmentsPHP.html I'm currently using imap_base64() to decode the MIME data and create the PDF. However, I hate using PDF readers in general and I thought it would be a lot more streamlined if I could just view it as an image instead. I've heard for convert with ImageMagick, but would I need to actually write the PDF to a directory before using this, or can I convert somehow directly from the MIME data in the email? • How to permanently prevent specific part of a file from being committed in git?

  I have cloned a remote SVN repository with git-svn. I have modified a pom.xml file in this cloned repo in a way that the code compiles. This setup is exclusive for me. Thus I don't want to push the changes back on the remote repo. Is there a way to prevent this (partial) change of a file from being committed into the repo? I'm aware of the fact, that I could use a personal branch, but this would mean certain merging overhead. Are there other ways? I've looked into this question and this one, but they are for rather temporal changes. Update: I'm also aware of the .gitignore possibilities, but this would mean to exclude the file completely.

• How could a share a Google map mashup with my own datapoints and links back to my site?

  I currently have a map mashup that has locations that I'm populating from my own database. A few users would like to also show that map on their site(s). I'd like to give them the ability to do that, but would like to retain the actual functionality of the map on my own site: like add "stuff" to places on the map through my a web form on my site. I could open the entire API to allow them to create their own form along with the data points, but most of the people wanting to put up the map aren't developers, they are just enthusiasts that have put together a personal page that they want to spice up. I was thinking I could just provide a JavaScript of some kind that they could then take to place on their site, or maybe an IFRAME of some type, or...any ideas? Anyone implemented this? TIA.

• Scheduled cron job to check for pending activity

  Using PHP ... This is for my personal use so I'm thinking maybe 3-4 emails a day. I'm at a point where I can send an email to a dedicated email address where my script parses the message and stores it into a DB. Now, I need to figure out the best way to check the records in the DB for any upcoming task. I feel like I'm missing something, maybe like a trigger field as to when a reminder should go out. However, that's not a concern to me at the moment since I'll just send an alert 15 mins prior to the due date. Question is, shoudl I run a cron job that queries the DB every minute? I take it the query will have to say something like "select all tasks that is due within 15 minutes."
