• Does the combo of PHP5, MySQL, and a Macbook Pro constitute a LAMP stack? If not, what does?

  Hello - I mostly code in Visual Studio, I like it, but lately it's making me feel a little claustrophobic. On my MacBook Pro, I've set up PHP5 and MySQL (natively). With the built-in server on the mac, does this constitute a LAMP stack? Is Mac OSX considered a Linux Environment? I have VMWare Fusion 3, should I set up a Linux OS virtually in order to implement a LAMP stack? Should I just use CakePHP or Zend? Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  Hi all, I am using jasper reports - ireports. i need to create a subreport. i have a Master Reports-- which holds the subreport1 and subreport 2. Subreport 1 and 2 will have individual tables in its details band. So, while compiling master report through java class by filling it with custom datasource it has to print a single page with two table.. this is my task !! i need some more guidance to implement this ? i didnt get much tutorial for it to implement.   I working with Reporting services in Sharepoint Mode, I am able to show the report in Sql Server Reporting services report viwer , the report has multiple parameters , My question is how do I pass more thatn one parameter from a custome web part to this report. I am able to pass one parameter by implementing the ITransformableFilterValues interface in the custom webpart , what I want to do is pass more than one parameter . Ex: If there are 2 parameters on report then i should able to map each from the control in webpart. Any help or guidance is appreciated.

• Why shouldn't I always use nullable types in C#.

  I've been searching for some good guidance on this since the concept was introduced in .net 2.0. Why would I ever want to use non-nullable data types in c#? (A better question is why wouldn't I choose nullable types by default, and only use non-nullable types when that explicitly makes sense.) Is there a 'significant' performance hit to choosing a nullable data type over its non-nullable peer? I much prefer to check my values against null instead of Guid.empty, string.empty, DateTime.MinValue,<= 0, etc, and to work with nullable types in general. And the only reason I don't choose nullable types more often is the itchy feeling in the back of my head that makes me feel like it's more than backwards compatibility that forces that extra '?' character to explicitly allow a null value. Is there anybody out there that always (most always) chooses nullable types rather than non-nullable types? Thanks for your time,

  When developing an application using agile techniques, what if any initial modelling/architecture activities do you do, and how do you capture that knowledge?? I'm not after a bullet list about XP, Scrum, Crystal, DSDM..etc as I'm familiar with the methodologies. But what do you do above and beyond the guidance given by these. I find I work best by thinking the system through first, but also like the benefits of timeboxing, story cards, pairing, tdd. The closest thing I've seen so far is Scott Ambler's Initial Architecture Modelling, but was wondering what alternatives are used out there?

• Edit and Continue does not Work in VS 2010 / ASP.Net MVC 2

  Although Enable Edit and Continue is checked on the Web tab of my ASP.Net MVC 2 project, I cannot in fact change the source code while running. For example, if I try to edit a controller while paused in the debugger, I cannot change the file (acts as if read only). I found a related post Edit and continue in ASP.NET web projects, however The answers seem to suggest I should be able to at least edit the code, then reload the page to see the result. I don't know what the distinction is between a Web Application and Web Site projects Any guidance is appreciated.

  rig: win7 64bit, vs2010, mvc v2, TestDriven.Net 3.0, Reshaper 5.0, MSpec 0.3 i recently started a new project and want to use mspec. (1) copied Machine.Specifications.ReSharperRunner.5.0.dll and Machine.Specifications.dll to JetBrains\ReSharper\5.0\Bin\Plugins\Machine.Specifications (2) copied Machine.Specifications.TDNetRunner.dll to TestDriven.NET 3\Machine.Specifications when i try to run the test i get this error: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Machine.Specifications i don't know where this error is coming from. vs2010 menu - ReSharper -Plugins shows the MSpec plugin. vs2010 menu -ReSharper - Options - Tools - Unit Testing also shows the MSpec unit testing provider but it doesn't show any details when i click on it as does MSTest and nUnit. i found this: http://marcinobel.com/index.php/mspec-bdd-installer/ which didn't work. i also tried this: http://eduncan911.com/blog/registering-mspec-runners-for-testdriven-net-on-windows-x64.aspx which also didn't work. now i fear i screwed my registry. any guidance?

• Supporting multiple screen sizes with Android using ImageButtons

  I've read the Android documentation: http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/screens_support.html but still have some questions. I'm trying to design a music application which basically has images of the instrument (ImageButton) that play a sound when clicked. However, I'm confused about how to have the ImageButtons scale to fit all the different screen sizes and how to position them. Which layout is best used for needing to position ImageButtons in specific locations on the screen? (i.e. cymbals on a drum set) FrameLayout, RelativeLayout? If I only really care about medium and large screens, do I need to create different resources (images) for both as well as a different XML layout to position them? I'm trying to find the simplest way to do this without having to create a separate layout XML file for positioning/size and separate image resources for each screen. Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  Any guidance on the following issue would be greatly appreciated. In which MDIParent event should I disable the items/buttons? Activated? On program Launch, I want the buttons disabled. If there are no active MDIChildren, I want the buttons disabled. When I launch a child form, I want to test that child form for data. If it is a blank form, I want the buttons to remain disabled.   I need some guidance on how to add a validation method to the jquery validate plugin. I've gathered that i need to use the plugin's addMethod() function, but how exactly to have it do what i need... Here i am! My form 's first question is a radio input choice. Each radio input, if selected, shows a sub-question of several checkboxes. What i would like my validation to do is: - make sure one radio input is selected - make sure at least one checkbox pertaining to the radio input is selected. Basically, out of the validate plugin's own logic, i would count the selector's length, and if there isn't any, return the error message. Something like this: var weekSelected = ($('input.seasonSelector:checked input.weekSelector:checked',form).length > 0); if(!weekSelected){ return 'Please select a week inside that season'; } How to turn that into a validate plugin method ?

• Transitioning to Branching with TFS

  Our team is currently using plain old TFS 2005, no branching, shared checkouts etc... I would like to introduce a DEV/MAIN/PROD branching system simillar to the basic flavor in the TFS Guidance document so that we can do some parallel dev, isolation, and firm up review and deployment processes. I have read most of the whitepapers etc. Do you guys have any practical advice, suggested tools, gotchas or reccomendations. Also, we plan to migrate to 2010 once it comes out - not sure if that would affect anything. I appreciate all the suggestions and help I can get as I am a branching neophyte. Thanks in advance.

• updating score in card game

  I am a total beginner with python. I need help updating the score of a card game. The scoring works as follows: Player A or B has a pair: score += 1 Player A asks Player B (vice versa) for a card and that player has it: score += 1 Player B doesn't have it, Player A has to draw a card. If there is pair after draw: score += 2 I have the logic down but I don't really know how to connect it together. I tried manually adding the scores in my functions, but it get's messy and complicated :( I assume I would have to make a new function for the score and call them in my other functions? I have java webstart app and I want it to connect to a server via SSL.just adding a property like:System.setProperty("javax.net.ssl.trustStore","my.keystore");But since a JAWS program is downloaded from server didn't work and don't have a my.keystore on local file system. So decided to distribute the certificate to all clients.I did the following and it worked, but I am sure there are more better solutions that this.I packed it inside a jar and copied to some temp directory on clients machine and read the truststore jks file. To start things off: In a rails application, what is the "proper" way to respond with JSON to REST-ful controller methods? (create, update, destroy) Is there an idiomatic way to indicate success/failure through a JSON response? • Java JEditorPane Format

  im trying to implement a Chat feature in my application. i have used 2 JEditorPane. one for holding chat history and the other for sending chat to the previous JEditorPane. the JEditorPane is text/html type. the problem i am having is when i put more than one space between characters it is automatically removed by the parser because it is HTML! how can i make it so, that the spaces are not stripped? example: hello world becomes: hello world. also i am having to parse the html tags so the new messages can be added to the history window. is there a better option than using JEditorPane? if i used JTextPane would it be easier to implement? i would like the chat boxes/panes to be able to handle bold, URL embedding for now. thank you and look forward to your guidance.

  I am considering using Spring Security annotations for my application, with the EL (expression language) feature. For example: @PreAuthorize("hasPermission(#contact, 'admin')") public void deletePermission(Contact contact, Sid recipient, Permission permission); I need the EL capability because I have built my own ACL implementation. However, to use this capability with the "#contact" type arguments, the Spring documentation says this: You can access any of the method arguments by name as expression variables, provided your code has debug information compiled in. This begs two questions: It is acceptable to have a production application commercially distributed with debug info in it? If not, is there any way around this? Thanks for any guidance on this!

  geonames.org got a web api you can use to get all the hierarchy for a city. you just enter the id and you will get the data back in xml. http://ws.geonames.org/hierarchy?geonameId=2657896 i wonder how you fetch the url with php and javascript, and which one should i use. cause the id's are in the mysql database. i will get them with php. should i use file_get_contents, curl or fopen? and what function in javascript? jquery $.post? heard that it can only access localhost. would be great with some guidance here and even better with some code examples. thanks!

  Hi all, After several years of following the bad practice handed down from 'architects' at my place of work and thinking that there must be a better way, I've recently been reading up around TDD and DDD and I think the principles and practices would be a great fit for the complexity of the software we write. However, many of the TDD samples I have seen call a method on the domain object and then test properties of the object to ensure the behaviour executed correctly. On the other hand, several respected people in the industry (Greg Young most noticeably so) advocate the "no-getters" principle on our domain objects. My question therefore is: How does one test the functionality of a domain object if it is forbidden to retrieve its state? I believe I am missing something fundamental so please feel free to call me an idiot and enlighten me - any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

  I've messed with Access a little bit in the past, had one class on OO theory, and one class on console c++ apps. Now, as a hobby project, I'm undertaking to write an actual app, which will be a database app using System.Data.SQLite and C#. I have the db's table structure planned. I have System.Data.SQLite installed and connected to VS Pro. I entered my tables and columns in VS, but that's where I'm stuck. I really don't know how to finish the db set up so I can start creating queries and testing the db structure. Can someone give me guidance to online resources that will help me learn how to get the db properly set up so I can proceed with testing it? I'm hoping for online resources specific to beginners using C# and System.Data.SQLite, but I'll use the closest I can get. Thanks.

• How do CSS sprites work?

  I have 3 different images and want to create a sprite using CSS. I understand that will reduce HTTP requests. However, I am totally new to this concept and have no idea as to how to approach this. What would be best bet for me? Also I have seen there are some CSS sprite generators where you submit a .zip of images and it combines them. I tried doing that, but did not understood what was happening. Any guidance regarding creating and using CSS sprites would be highly appreciated. Update: I have gone through the A List Part article but it was not very clear to me. Can someone provide an example of using a CSS sprite? [A short, self-contained example in an answer is preferable for SO than just a link to an example elsewhere. –ed.]

  I have an button just as have Ask Question on SO and here is the CSS for it: .rfs .grey_btn{ float: right; margin: 15px 5px; } Now I have to add border shadow to it and I have tried border-radius and box-shadow but it does not give me proper result. Also other question is that I have a label or box say and now I want to increase size of that box so that I have move the text inside that box to right, currently if I move it to right than it reaches the end limit of box and so I want to increase the size of box so that I can push text more towards right.
