  • Ubuntu hardware compatability

    I have only previously played with ubuntu using virtual machines with VMware Fusion. So everything just sort of worked. I've never had to install any drivers. I'm considering putting it on some real hardware and using it as a media center. What should I be looking for as far as checking hardware compatibility? How does installing drivers work? Any quick and easy recommendations / guides?

    I'm trying to install the Java Enterprise Edition 6 on my workstation. I downloaded the installer from the Sun website. Whenever I get to the option in the installer "JDK Selection" I'm told to manually select a JDK. I gave it my path (C:\IBM\rad7\jdk\), and was told it is invalid. What do I need to do to successfully install JEE6?

  • Cloning a VM to add a new MySQL Slave

    I am in the process of adding a new slave to a replicated mysql setup. All of the slave nodes are virtual machines. If I clone one of the nodes to a new VM, then start it with no networking, stop mysql, change the server-id in my.cnf to a new id and then restart mysql and networking, will it all work correctly, or will mysql get confused because it used to be a different server id?   • Windows 8 disk errors

    So yesterday, I forcibly restarted my Windows 8 PC. VMWare Workstation was having some trouble with the guest Linux Mint OS. It wasn't responding for some time, so I tried suspending it September 28th or perhaps even before. It wouldn't suspend -- I forgot what the window looked like, but all options in the power menu were disabled (i.e. "Shutdown," "Power Off," and options like that were all disabled). I eventually killed the VMWare application through Task Manager, though I was too lazy to hunt down the running virtual machine itself, and decided to kill it by just shutting down my PC entirely. The PC wouldn't shut down for quite some time after the monitor went blank, so I did a cold reset by holding the power button. I then powered it on again and Windows briefly gave me some message like "Search for KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR." Windows then started diagnosing some problems and gave me the message, "Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete." That was yesterday night, and I went to sleep without waiting for it to finish. This morning, it said that the repair failed, and that the log was at C:\windows\system32\LogFiles\srt\srtTrail.txt (as I remember it -- I don't have the exact path I wrote down right now). It gave me some other options to troubleshoot, such as resetting Windows (files and settings still intact, but programs not installed through the app store will be erased). That didn't work (no error message given, I was just told it didn't work). I tried rebooting in safe mode, the same diagnosis process begins, except that this time it doesn't bother with the automatic repairs again. So I tried using the command prompt to try to see if my files are at least still there. I was on the X drive, and I couldn't cd to the C drive. I couldn't find my folder under Users (of course?), and couldn't find the srt folder under LogFiles either. I am not sure what to try next. I have backed up everything, but to the cloud, so if absolutely necessary I can start off with a fresh copy of Windows and restore all my data, though it would be a hassle. Any thoughts on what might be wrong or what I can try? My computer was purchased just this June, so the hard drive should still be pretty new.

  • Windows 7: Some time my mouse got "virtually" unplugged and plugged again in some seconds.

    So guys, sometime when i am browsing or doing other stuff it's like windows unplugs my usb-logitech-mouse. it than get riconnected again in few seconds. I tihnk this is happening after I had to install virtual machines (like: virtualbox and vmware) I already disinstalled them but this issue is still here. When this happens even the lights on my mouse are off same behaviour as like somone unplagged it. What could i do?

  • Is there a Linux distro specific for running as a host OS for Virtualization?

    Hi, as I understand running VMware or other virtualizations requires a "host os". Normally this is one of your main os-es, that you really use. What I would like is a mini-linux and virtualization software pre-wrapped into a specialized bootalble, installable mini-os. So the linux would not have a webserver, nor X, just the minimum to run as a host OS and of course optimized for that, like some partitioning tools and such.

  • Unable to view users and groups

    I am using Centos5 running on a VMWare but whenever I choose to open the User Manager menu from System-Administration, an error message always displays The user database cannot be read. This problem is most likely caused by a mismatch between etc/passwd and /etc/shadow or /etc/group and /etc/gshadow/. The program will now exit. I am a Linux novice and have no idea how to fix this tiny issue. ANy help is thankful. Thank you.

  • Directly connected HP server and CX4 with fibre

    I have direcly connected (with fibre) a HP ProLiant BL460c G7 with a EMC CX4. I installed VMWare Esxi 5.0. The problem is that cx4 cannot connect to the blade. It seems that there is no connectivity problem, because the server can be connected to fibre switch with other equipment (EVA 4000) and also cx4 is already atteched to one same server. The problem seems to exist somewhere between the cx4 and esxi when they are direclty attached. Any ideas??

  • Starting/Stopping services as a program start and end

    I have some applications like VMWare, SQL Server, which have a lot services started even without me using the software. I have changed the startup of this services to manual and have created a .bat file to start the services up and then I launch the program. But, its not a efficient solution. I would like to start the services once the application starts and stop once the application closes as well. Does anyone know of any solution?

  • URL not responding on OS X, fine on other machine

    For some reason I can't access anything on python.org. nslookup resolves the IP address, but no browser or curl command will fetch anything. It works fine on a VMWare Ubuntu virtual machine and on a Windows machine on the same network. I've checked there's nothing funny in /etc/hosts I don't know where else to go looking for issues, can anyone suggest anything? Running OS X 10.5 Leopard

  • WDS DHCP same server on Windows Server 2008

    I have been struggling with a problem on my Windows Server 2008 for the past 4 - 5 hours and cannot figure out whats wrong. I have tried pretty much everything that I found on google and all the links are purple. Hopefully you guys can help me. I am running a Windows Server 2008 Standard edition with the latest updates as of today. Furthermore I am running a Windows Server 2003. Both are virtual machines on my ESXi 5 server. My network is: 192.168.10.0/24 W2k8: 192.168.10.251 is the PDC running ADS, DHCP and WDS W2k3: 192.168.10.253 AND 192.168.1.175 running Routing and Remote Access and ISA 2006 Enterprise In my internal network (192.168.10.0/24) I have my client machine (192.168.10.10) that runs a VMWare Workstation. I am trying to deploy Windows 7 Home Premium to a virtual machine on my VMWorkstation via PXE. I have set the Workstation's VM network adapter to "bridged" so that it uses the physical network adapter and is connected to my internal network. The DHCP pool is configured to give IP addresses from 192.168.10.10-192.168.10.15 (works for normal clients and is not used up) When I start my VM with the PXE I get the error: PXE-E52:proxyDHCP offers were received. No DHCP offers were received Apperently this means "that means that WDS responded but the DHCP server did not." People suggested to direct the traffic to both WDS and DHCP on the router, since everything is on the same subnet there is no need for that as the broadcast is seen by everyone (WDS and DHCP) No reservation for the virtual mac addrs is made on the DHCP. Furthermore it was suggested to configure the DHCP options: Option 60= PXEClient Option 66= WDS server name or IP address Option 67= Boot file name However, this is not recommended by Microsoft, I tried it and it did not solve my problem. The configuration on the WDS (My System is German therefore the actual naming might be different): PXE response tab: PXE responses is set to "ALL (known and unknown)" DHCP Tab: Do not listen to port 67 is NOT ticked - if I tick this I do not get any responses and the PXE errors gets PXE-E51 that neither DHCP or proxyDHCP were received DHCP-Option 60 for "PXEClient" is ticked The confusing part here is that it is advised in the tab to tick the first option since it is on the same server. Network Configuration Tab: Use the following IP-Address range for Multicast-IP-Address: 224.0.1.0 - 224.0.10.0 Thats not the default one, however it is in the allowed range. The UDP port range is the default since it is not advised to change them. I tried to change the "networkprofile" from 100mbits/1gbits and custom. I am running a 1gbit network with CAT6 cables and 1gbit netgear switch 5 ports. Everything is configured to use 1gbit. The WDS is authorised for the DHCP server. My ISA 2006 configuration: For the internal networking i have configured the following policy array: Allow protocols on internal network including the w2k3 host: 67,68,53,ICMP, 4011 UDP receive, 64001-6500 UDP send receive, 69 UDP send Routing and Remote Access I tried the DHCP relay agent configuration that was suggested as well, but that did not work I would highly appreciate anykind of help because I am pretty much done here with my nerves.     I build two VMware's machines. First one with MAAS, second one with a fresh installation from MAAS. Region controller was installed with Ubuntu 12.04 distribution, and upgraded (. Node computing was installed from MAAS with Quantal 12.10. Juju was installed and upgraded to 1.18 (from ppa:juju/stable repository). MAAS was upgraded from cloud-archive:tools repository. In debug mode, I got how Juju connects to node. Then I run the same instruction: ssh -o "StrictHostKeyChecking no" -o "PasswordAuthentication no" -i /home/lliurex/.juju/ssh/juju_id_rsa -i /home/lliurex/.ssh/id_rsa [email protected] /bin/bash It worked (with and without /bin/bash). When Juju spends all bootstrap-timeout tells it has not found /var/lib/juju/nonce.txt file. It's true, it doesn't exist. It doesn't mind if you put a timeout of 1800, 3600 or 72000, it always finishes the same.

  • Eclipse ADT: Layout Properties Editor doesn't work correctly

    I have a new, clean installation of Eclipse Kepler (4.3.1) SR1 (x64) in Linux Mint 15 Olivia x64 (based on Ubuntu 13.04 “Raring Ringtail”). ADT version is 22.3.0, and Java is Oracle's 1.7.0_45. The problem is, I cannot edit the properties in layout editor; nothing happens when I click "..." button, nor I can edit the properties directly by clicking the empty space. The boolean properties don't even contain the checkbox. This doesn't happen in Windows XP 32bit, with the same versions of Eclipse and ADT: Anyone know any workarounds/reasons for this? Looks like Mac OS X Mountain Lion had a similar issue in the past, but I heard that was fixed, and I'm talking about Linux version here. I had no such problems in Eclipse Indigo and an old version of ADT, but I can't remember the exact versions of them. EDIT: Lubuntu 13.04 (32bit) in VMware Player doesn't have this problem.
