• Problems after upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04

  I upgraded to 12.04.1 from 10.04 recently and am running the Gnome Classic (no effects) desktop. I spent a couple of days tweaking the appearance and behaviour but there are two issues that I can't resolve. The mouse cursor frequently disappears, especially when scrolling through web pages or hovering over links/icons with tooltips. Moving the mouse brings the pointer back but it vanishes again almost immediately. Note I don't have unclutter or Parallels installed. The screen no longer fades to black when left idle for too long - it just cuts out. Bad news when watching content online. Any tips greatly appreciated. Cheers...

• What is the difference between _Procedural Generation_ and _Random Generation_?

  Today, I got into an argument about the term "procedural generation". My point was that its different from "classic" random generation in that procedural generation is based on a more mathematical, fractal-based, algorithm leading to a more "realistic" distribution and the usual randomness of most languages are based on a pseudo-random-number generator, leading to an "unrealistic", in a way, ugly, distribution. This discussion was made with a heightmap in mind. The discussion left me somehow unconvinced about my own arguments though, so, is there more to it? Or am I the one who is, in fact, simply wrong?

• Best way to redirect in IIS

  We have a website that has two URLs (one for the US side and another for the Canadian side which is then broken into Canadian English and Canadian French). For the purposes of my question, I will write as: www.us_url.com (US) www.canada_url.ca/ca_en/ (Canadian English) www.canada_url.ca/ca_fr/ (Canadian French) To make sure people are on the correct site, what do I do if they go to the US URL with Canadian English content (e.g. www.us_url.com/ca_en/canada.asp) but I want to make sure the URL is the Canadian one (e.g. www.canada_url.ca/ca_en/canada.asp) so it shows up properly in Google Analytics. We're using IIS 7 and classic ASP.

• Where should a programmer explain the extended logic behind the code?

  I have developed a few quantitative libraries in C# where it is important to understand not only the classic information that goes with the XMLDoc comments (which contains basic information with the method signature) but also the mathematical formulas being use within the methods. Hence I would like to be able to include extended documentation with the code, which could contain, for example Latex formulas, graphs, and so on. Do you think such information should be included in the API documentation? Or should it be included in a dev blog for examples? Are there common tools that are usually used for this kind of purposes?

• Building an instance system.

  I am looking into how to design an instance system for the game I am working on. I have always wondered how these are created in games like World of Warcraft, where instances == dungeons/raids/etc). Areas that are separated from players other than those in your group, but have specific logic to them. Specifically how can you reuse your existing code base and not have a bunch of checks everywhere ? if (isInstance) do x; else do y; I don't know if this will make too much of a difference on any answers, but we're using a pretty classic "Object as pure aggregation" component system for our entities.

• Video playback not working in Ubuntu 11.10

  (Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome Classic with Compiz, Nvidia graphics card) This problem occurs with every and all video, whether it's a Youtube video in Firefox, an AVI file in movie player, or any other video. Video simply does not work. When I start any kind of video, the image halts after a second or two. The sound, however, continues. Before it seemed that if I delete all the files in ~/.gstreamer-0.10/, then reboot, the video will play. However this is no longer the case. Manipulating files in that directory does nothing to help the situation. I am now no longer sure this is a gstreamer issue or something else. I am open to any and all possibilities. How can I get video playback to run smoothly on my machine?

• kubuntu 12.04 runs slowly

  i have a 3ghz amd 64 dual core am3 socket processor, asus mom board, 4GB ram, 8800GTS nividia video card with 500MB ram. installed kubuntu 12.04 and very laggy. select menu and 20 seconds later the menu pops up. i switched to classic menu and that seemed to help. what direction should i look first to get this running better? video perhaps? i had ubuntu 11.04 on this machine previously and had no problems with speed.

• How to revert to 10.04

  Since "upgrading" to 12.10, the multitude of problems and slowness has wondering me , if I'm running windows, so I want to take it back to 10.04. Just some of the problems that we never had in 10.4: Can't play YouTube and chat at same time; Can't open more than 5 photos in GIMP without constant grayouts; Can't easily close apps or programs on desktop; Can't Use Avidimux and Audacity at same time, CPU load stays at 100%; New Gnome is not nearly as intuitive as classic, focus is all over the place, have to constantly switch to have the focus on right window of same program (either browser), etc. Do I need to wipe my system partition and start over, or is there an easier way to downgrade?

• Some menus are in Chinese/Japanese!

  Yesterday I shutdown my computer and today when I powered it on and logged in to 12.04, certain strings are in Japanese/Chinese (I don't know how to differentiate between the two). The strings are: Applications, places menu selector in my panel. Under 'places', the 'Home folder', 'Desktop', 'Computer'. The menus in VLC! Certain applications like 'sound converter', etc. How can I change everything back to English? I'm using Gnome classic in Ubuntu 12.04.

  I don't quite understand what this means...I'm just learning C++ from my very very very basic Python experience...and so this may be a very stupid question. My question is...say you have your classic "Hello World" program and you have the line: cout<<"Hello World!"<<endl; what does the << mean...because I was just looking at using input in C and saw that you'd do something like: int i; cini; and I noticed that it has instead of << and I've read that those are bitwise shifts...and I don't exactly understand what those are...but I think it might be different here...Help...Thanks in advance

• Android Java: Way to effectively pause system time while debugging?

  In my project, I call nanoTime and use that to get a deltaTime which I pass to my entities and animations. However, while debugging (for example, stepping through my code), the system time on my phone is happily chugging along, so it's impossible to look at, say, two sequential frames of data in the debugger (since by the time I'm done looking at the first frame, the system time has continued to move ahead by seconds or even minutes). Is there a programming practice or method to pause the system clock (or a way for my code to intercept and fake my deltaTime) whenever I pause execution from the debugger? Additional Information: I'm using Eclipse Classic with the ADT plugin and a Samsung SII, coding in Java. • Missing Firefox app icon

  I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 (upgraded from LTS 10.04) and Firefox (version 11) doesn't show it's icon in the Window List panel, in the Firefox window top left corner (system menu) nor when using ALT+TAB to switch applications. I'm using unity 2D since I'm running ubuntu as a guest in a VMWare virtual machine (Host is windows 7) Instead of the Firefox icon I get what appears to be a generic icon that looks like an app window in the window list and a black rectangle with a curl in the bottom right corner in the ALT+TAB window. How do I fix this so that the proper Firefox icon gets displayed? EDIT: Depending on the icon set chosen in the Appearence settings window sometimes I get the icon, sometimes I don't. When using Ubuntu classic none of the icon sets provide the icon for Firefox.

• Ubuntu 12.04 - what is it with the keyboard layout resets?

  so, on each reboot my keyboard always resets to US (!?) sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration gives temporary relief. Is there a way to make it permanent? I tried: sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup This did not work, and on reboot gnome3 was no longer responsive so I am back to gnome classic.... • How do I disable auto-away for online presence?

  I am using Natty with with classic GNOME desktop. I use Empathy and sometimes Skype. Both these get the online state from the system itself somehow. If I don't touch my keyboard for a few minutes - even when watching a YouTube clip or something - the inactivity triggers an auto-away state on my messaging apps. It's synchronized so I imagine its coming coordinated from the system, and not the two apps making the same decision individually. How can I disable this? I want manual control - I'm only away when I set it to away in a messaging app.

• Google analytics shows wrong number of page views, asp.net website

  Sometimes it can be for example 4500 requests, after a few hours it shows a few thousand less. What is wrong? It looks like analytics corrects itself. I changed from classic to Universal a few months ago, do not know if it has anything to do with this. • How can I derive force vectors from velocity vectors?

  I'm making a 2d shooter ala Geometry Wars. I've got my own simple physics at work driving the background grid and all my entities. To move anything in the world I apply a Vector2d force to it. The 'engine' calculates the resulting acceleration and therefore the velocity. I am trying to port some code I found which implements the classic 'Boids' flocking algorithm, but the code I have works by calculating the Boids' velocities directly, so If i use it as is, it bypasses my physics engine. How I can translate the velocity vectors into force vectors that I can apply to the Boids and which will result in the proper velocities via my physics engine.

• appearance incomplete

  I'm using 14:04 which is pretty nice. Something wionders me: if I open a window (e.g. Ubuntu Software Centre) I can see SOME items (sometimes nothing) but by hovering the mouse over it it appears - and then disappears again. Sometimes the side mover acts the same way... Maybe it has to do with my hardware: P4, 3 GHz, 2 GB RAM, older graphics board, KVM-switch? There's no difference whether I use Gnome, Ubuntu standard, Ubuntu classic, Ubuntu fallback... Thanks for hints Jens

  I'm hoping to call a "static" dictionary function using call(). By "static" I mean that the keyword 'dict' is not used in the function's definition. I use this nomenclature in the hopes that the effect of this keyword is to declare a static member function as is possible in java/C++/etc, ie to put the function name in the class namespace but allow it to be called without referencing an object. However this doesn't seem to work. • How to see external libraries code when debugging

  Hello!! First of all... this is my message #1 in this place, so... please be nice with me ;) I just started recently to study Gnome apps/libraries and I found that debuggers are an excellent way to learn, because seeing the code running helps a lot in understanding the structure of the program. But I have a problem. For example, debugging gnome-panel I found a lot of calls to external functions (basically the GTK+ functions), and although pretending to see all the code of all the functions applications like this call would be crazy, there are a lot that will be very interesting to see in action. The problem is that the debugger hasn't the code of those libraries loaded and it can't show it to me —at most it shows the line number where the execution is. I'm using Nemiver and when it tries to enter in an external function it claims because it can't find a file it supposed to be somewhere. For example, trying to enter in gtk_window_set_default_icon_name it tries to load /build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.16.1/gtk/gtkwindow.c, and calling XSetIOErrorHandler, ../../src/ErrHndlr.c. So now I think that I'm doing something wrong... Why Nevimer are looking for those source files in those places?? My system does not even have the /build/buildd/ folders... and I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or I need to install somethig or what. Any suggestion?   [UPDATE] Solution I decided on: Decided that passing in a callback to the plugin will take care of firing an event once all images have completed loading. Chaining is also still possible. • Xubuntu vs Ubuntu 10.04 Performance

  I know it just came out today, but are there any statistics with memory requirements, system resources, power usage, and performance to decide which is better Xubuntu or Ubuntu (XFCE vs Gnome)? My main concern is running it as secondary OS on my Lenovo T400 laptop to just get online quickly and using SSH from a terminal to connect to remote web servers.
