• How does Git know which Index blob to add to a tree?

  In Pro Git Ch9 the author says: Git normally creates a tree by taking the state of your staging area or index and writing a tree object from it. My question is how does git know which of two consequitive index entries to create the Tree object from? For example: $ echo 'First change' > one.txt $ git add one.txt $ find .git/objects -type f .git/objects/1f/755a7fffe4 //first index entry $ echo 'Second change' > one.txt $ git add one.txt $ find .git/objects -type f .git/objects/2d/234asdf2 //second index entry $ git commit -a -m "Initial commit" $ git cat-file master^{tree} 100644 blob 2d234asdf2 one.txt //How did it know not to take 1f755?? Does it just look at the blob timestamps? Also - what happens to the first blob created - no one is referencing it. Does it just get destroyed or forgotten?

  After working on a Django project for a while, I now have to do some design documents for it (UML type stuff). However the code doesn't have classes, but instead uses views.py with modules in it... What would be the best way to show the design of my application from the initial __init__.py, to the urls.py where the HTML requests are then filtered to the specific urls.py in each of the packages and then handled by the views.py? i.e. django-app urls.py views.py settings.py manager.py __init__.py django-package urls.py views.py

Should I have a column in my database for each column on the table, then say either A,B,C or D depending on what column it is in but then how would I display it using PHP in my code provided?   Hi all, in the data warehouse there's a default language for the measures, and I added a translation for German captions. In a Visual Studio Report Server project, when creating a query with my German OS, the cube and its measures are displayed in German language. When dragging measures to the mdx query windows, the default measure name is used. That's what I want and what I expect, since when writing MDX queries I would like to use the default measure names. But when executing the query, the columns created for each measure is translated to German again. This resuls in having German columns names within my dataset, which I dont want. I'd like to have the english column names. I already tried to change the connection string to: Data Source=server;Initial Catalog=DataWarehouse;LocaleIdentifier=1033 But that doesn't help, I still see German translations. Anyone knows how to set a specific translation?

The current connection string I'm using in my web.config file is: <add name="AdventureWorksConnectionString2" connectionString="Data Source=SIDEKICK;Initial Catalog=AdventureWorks;Persist Security Info=false; " providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" /> When I select Basic Authentication it pops up the warning: "The authentication option you have chosen results in passwords being sent over the network without data encryption..." How do I choose this authentication method and still send passwords over securely? So essentially I am looking for the most secure authentication method but that still requires users to input password?

• Caching result of SELECT statement for reuse in multiple queries

  I have a reasonably complex query to extract the Id field of the results I am interested in based on parameters entered by the user. After extracting the relevant Ids I am using the resulting set of Ids several times, in separate queries, to extract the actual output record sets I want (by joining to other tables, using aggregate functions, etc). I would like to avoid running the initial query separately for every set of results I want to return. I imagine my situation is a common pattern so I am interested in what the best approach is. The database is in MS SQL Server and I am using .NET 3.5.

• Getting HTMLUnknownElement with jQuery.find() and an XML Document

  I'm attempting to load up an XML document (specifically an RSS feed) via an Ajax request, parse it, and insert some information based on said feed into my page. The code works fine in Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Safari, but not IE7. Go figure. After doing some initial debugging, I've found that the XML string is being retrieved via the request, and the specific node type I'm getting when trying to parse nodes out of the document is HTMLUnknownElement. Here's the relevant code: $.get('feed.php', function(oXmlDoc) { var titles = $(oXmlDoc).find('title'); var dates = $(oXmlDoc).find('pubDate'); for(var i = 0; i < 5; i++) { parseNodes(titles[i].firstChild.nodeValue, dates[i].firstChild.nodeValue)); } }); The parseNodes function is never actually being hit because IE cannot access firstChild and, consequently, nodeValue. Thanks in advance for any ideas and/or suggestions on how to address this.

The documentation needed is code documentation, including list/description of classes, components etc and their interdependencies. At the moment the code isn’t commented much and the way it has been commented is inconsistent. I was thinking of using Doxygen to generate initial documentation and then take it from there. • How to store a 250mb database in an Offline Web App

  Ok, maybe i'm not seeing the whole picture or something, but i kinda need a brainstorm. So the purpose is to make a webapp (HTML5, CSS, Javascript) that has to search on a 250mb database without any internet connection, so.. yes the database has to be on the client side. The hard part here is, this App has to work on an iPod or iPhone without internet connection. (An initial connection to download the App is ok), LocalStorage has a 5mb limit, couchDB would be great since they have an webapp easily accessed by Javascript (privacy concerns don't matter at this point), so i'm pretty much out of ideas.... Does anyone see an alternative, or solution for the purpose?

• Connecting to TFS via ASP.NET, jQuery and Phonegap

  I want to develop a mobile application that would allow the user the ability to run a suite of automated test cases housed in TFS. This is something I thought of this morning so it's all still very preliminary. But I'm curious as to what would be the best route for something like this? Or if it's even possible? Because the mobile devices from the users will vary from iphones to droids, I would probably want to incorporate something like Phonegap for it's cross platform capabilities. My initial thought was to develop in ASP.net/C# (which would be stored on a remote server), and have jQuery make calls to that server. Not sure if that would be the most appropriate way of handling this. I'm not too familiar with JSON but I have seen it as a suggestion on various sites to handle the returned data. Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

  I was reading about SIOF from a book and it gave an example : //file1.cpp extern int y; int x=y+1; //file2.cpp extern int x; y=x+1; Now My question is : In above code..will following things happen ? 1. while compiling file1.cpp, compiler leaves y as it is i.e doesn't allocate storage for it. 2. compiler allocates storage for x, but doesn't initialize it. 3. While compiling file2.cpp, compiler leaves x as it is i.e doesn't allocate storage for it. 4. compiler allocates storage for y, but doesn't initialize it. 5. While linking file1.o and file2.o, now let file2.o is initialized first, so now: Does x gets initial value of 0? or doesn't get initialized?

  I need to include about 1 MByte of data in a Java application, for very fast and easy access in the rest of the source code. My main background is not Java, so my initial idea was to convert the data directly to Java source code, defining 1MByte of constant arrays, classes (instead of C++ struct) etc., something like this: public final/immutable/const MyClass MyList[] = { { 23012, 22, "Hamburger"} , { 28375, 123, "Kieler"} }; However, it seems that Java does not support such constructs.   Skipping the question of whether this is bad design (and the question of why I would want/need to do this), I'm just wondering if my 'math' is right... I have n things that need to be put in order (n is always less than 5): thing1 thing2 thing3 ... and I'd like to store these results in a single integer for thing. My initial thought is that (obviously the code will not look like this): thing = thing1 * 1 + thing2 * 2 + thing3 * 4 + thing5 * 8 will always give me a unique value, and that any value for thing will always translate back to its values for thing1...thingn. Is this correct?

  I'm working with the designer and he sent me the following design for the search bar on our webpage: I'm very much against using images in webpage design unless completely necessary, so I'm hoping that I can recreate the whole search bar widget in CSS. I know how to do border-radius, gradients, box-shadows, etc, so that's not a problem. Question: Assuming CSS3 browser compatibility, how can I go about recreating the actual search button (the magnifying glass portion) with the double curved edge, and the slight drop shadow on the bottom left? Thoughts: My initial feeling was that the search button would be circular and free-standing, then overlap the search input div with a negative left-margin, but then I was unsure how I would get that drop shadow. Edit: I'm not completely opposed to using an image for the magnifying glass, but I've seen a similar icon created in CSS before. Would an image vs. pure CSS end up loading at the same speed, or should I do all I can do in pure CSS?

• How to get the app a Django model is from?

  I have a model with a generic relation: TrackedItem --- genericrelation ---> any model I would like to be able to generically get, from the initial model, the tracked item. I should be able to do it on any model without modifying it. To do that I need to get the content type and the object id. Getting the object id is easy since I have the model instance, but getting the content type is not: ContentType.object.filter requires the model (which is just content_object.__class__.__name__) and the app_label. I have no idea of how to get in a reliable way the app in which a model is. For now I do app = content_object.__module__.split(".")[0], but it doesn't work with django contrib apps.

• merging 3 source versioned trees into 1

  This is probably an easy question... I have 4 source versions of the same software in 4 different directories. I have just started using git for version control. To date, I have just been snapping a desperate copy rolling forward. I want to merge all versions (1.0.0.1, 1.0.0.2, 1.0.0.3, 1.0.1.0) together so that I will have a reference history. Opposed to just starting out with 1.0.1.0 as the initial version. I want to get this sort of thing right form the start. Can someone outline the basic steps to accomplish this? Thanks much, XO
