• What is the correct authentication mechanism when there are users inside and outside the domain?

  We have a Windows 7 enterprise desktop data entry app for mobile (laptop) users with local SQL Express 2008 R2 Express db that syncs data with an SQL Server 2008 R2 Server db. Authentication is required before syncing the data. The existing group of users are part of the organisation's domain so normal scenario and they connect to the Sql Server directly. But there are plans for a second group of app users who belong to various partner organisations so they are outside our domain and have their own various separate domains/accounts. The aim is to deploy the desktop app to them and they will periodically sync data to our SQL Server. What I am uncertain of: Is it possible to authenticate users from another domain? Can permissions be managed via Active Directory etc? Which authentication protocol should be used in this scenario? Windows, Forms, SQL, etc? The IT people are requesting users of the system be managed via Active Directory. Is it possible to manage the external domain users access via Active Directory?

  I have a file at some/long/path/to/file/myfiel.txt. I want to rename it to some/long/path/to/file/myfile.txt. Currently I do it by mv some/long/path/to/file/myfiel.txt some/long/path/to/file/myfile.txt , but typing the path twice isn't terribly effective (even with tab completion). How can I do this faster? (I think I can write a function to change the filename segment only, but that's plan B).

IN A ;; Query time: 0 msec ;; SERVER: 1.2.3.4#53(1.2.3.4) ;; WHEN: Thu Apr 1 09:57:59 2010 ;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 31 Some background on the fictitious "1.2.3.4". It's a slave name server in my nameserver "farm". Technically I have ns1 (being the master) and ns2/ns3. Currently ns1/ns2 are down for maintenance, so I left ns3 at it serving live traffic. That's the point, DNS is supposed to be resilient. Now the odd part is, "1.2.3.4" was serving requests for example.com just fine for the last 4-5 days. This morning I get a phone call that it's non-responsive. After investigation I see the message you see above, SERVFAIL. I looked into the zone file and saw the following: example.com IN SOA ns1.example.com. hostmaster.mail.example.com. ( I wondered if at this point that the nameserver thought it was not authoritative over example.com and adjusted it to the following: example.com IN SOA ns3.example.com. hostmaster.mail.example.com. ( After that, it started responding again for all authoritative queries for example.com. I have no idea why. I thought these things were supposed to be normalized upon zone transfer from ns1 - ns3? Can someone please example why this happened and how to prevent it from happening in the future? I've never had a similar problem, and because I don't understand it well, I might be missing some critical information in this question. So please let me know if I can further add any detail to make things clearer as well. One more thing to note: I have other domains that I'm authoritative for that have their SOA still saying ns1.example.com. and not ns3.example.com. Those domains are serving requests just fine! Is it a matter of time before they stop also and I have to change SOA to ns3.example.com? Is this also only required because ns1 and ns2 are currently offline?

• How to install Delorme StreetAtlas (any version) + GPS inside VirtualBox VM?

  When I try to run the install program I get a popup message that says the installer program is not a valid executable. Background: I want a GPS with maps on my laptop running Ubuntu 10.4LTS. Unfortunately I can't find a decent native Linux GPS solution with 50 state US street level coverage. I have VirtualBox VMs available for WinXP and Win7 (among others). The VMs work fine with MicroSoft Streets and Trips (2010) and MapNGo 5 (a very! old Delorme product), but while both these products support GPS, they don't support the Earthmate LT-40 USB GPS I already have. I've got pretty much every Delorme Street Atlas they've released in the last decade and none of them will install in a VM. Any help would be much appreciated. Clarification: I've installed the Delorme products from these CDs before and the disks are fine - as long as installation is done on a "physical" machine. Added: I've tried install from an iso as well as the real CD. No difference in result (setup.exe is not a valid executable) The WinXP is SP-2 (held back on purpose at this point - I'll snapshot and fork a later SP to test). The Win2K is SP-6a. Win7(32) VM is whatever updates came out last week. The USB setup is working at least to the point where the GPS device is active in the device list (has an x in the box). At this point its not relevant because the program that needs to read it can't even be installed. Added 9-19: Added wine as harrymc suggested. Initial result was no change. Here's wines error message. The file '/media/Disk1/setup.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied form an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit. At first I thought the execute bit was the problem, but looking at several other windows CDs I see that the execute bit is not set on their exe files (which install to VM without error). Still it was worth a shot so I copied the StreetAtlas 9 DVD to my hard disk, changed the on-disk exe files to have the execute bit set and tried to install again. This time the install via wine got me through the installation process. When I start the program it bombs immediately, so we haven't made much real progress so far. I very much prefer the VM solution to wine, so I'm going back to that for now. To recap the VM situation, using an updated XP with SP3 and all recommended hotfixes: StreetAtlas 2009 USA fails with "not marked as executable". StreetAtlas 2007 USA fails with "not marked as executable". StreetAtlas 9 (copyright 2001) fails with "not marked as executable". SteeetAtlas (copyright 1991) fails with "not marked as executable" Delorme Topo 4 (copyright 2002) fails with "not marked as executable". Just about ready to give up. So I switched from XP VM to Win7 VM and tried StreetAtlas 2009 again. This time it installs. Earthmate USB GPS works. WTH? I feel like the monkey who just wrote a line of Shakespear. I'm smiling because it worked, but I have no clue why. I'm awarding the bounty to harrymc because wine did give some useful insight into the problem and a +1 to goyiux as thanks for helping.

• Is it possible to run my other partition inside of a VM?

  So I have dual boot machine with windows 7 and ubuntu 11. I would like to, at times, run a vm from one partition to another. For example sometimes I would like to do certain things in windows while still using ubuntu. At other times, perhaps the opposite would be more effective. Why? Well running a vm is fairly resource intensive, and depending on what I am doing primarily I would rather be in one operating system vs the other, or perhaps it is just convenient. An important consideration is that you should NOT need to "copy" or "duplicate" the partition in any way. The VM should just read the partition as if it were a standard image. Any ideas? I am using virtual box currently. I have also used virtual pc. I could probably get a copy of vmware workstation if needed.

I use the samsung galaxy tab 10.1 as my mobile device. and the protocol i used is HttpGet or HttpPost. And i use XAMPP( with Apache& SQL) to do the server and process the php. But, due to android cannot detect adhoc network from laptop, i use Virtual Router ( for window 7) to create virtual access point and make the tablet able connect to my laptop. But the problem is: [1] in my apps (client-android), where the httpget or httppost to which url? localhost in my laptop- 127.0.0.1 or localhost in android 10.0.0.1? or the ip address of the virtual router? [2]so, if i want access from android to the localhost(laptop-Apache) to call the php to run? which port? which ip address /url that i need to put in android apps(httpget)? and do i need to modify anything in httpconfig for XAMPP? thanks alot.

• Can I lvreduce after lvextend without losing the ext4 partition inside it?

  In a botched attempt to move my root partition from one disk to another I have done the following: added new disk partitioned it with parted (part #3 is now almost totally filling the disk) initialized a physical volume $ pvcreate /dev/sdb3 Physical volume "/dev/sdb3" successfully created extended the volume group to include this new physical disk $ vgextend myvg /dev/sdb3 Volume group "myvg" successfully extended extended the logical volume (I think this is where I ballsed it up: I think I should have pvmove'ed stuff to the new pv in that group - can someone confirm?) $ lvextend /dev/mapper/myvg-root /dev/sdb3 I would now like to undo the lvextend and then proceed with the original plan of moving the content of the old physical volume over to the new physical volume. Can I reduce the logical volume (I have not yet touched the ext4 partition that sits in /dev/mapper/myvg-root with something like resizefs) without fear of damaging the ext4 filesystem? If so, how do I tell it to reduce by exactly the right amount? $ lvreduce --by-exactly-the-amount-occupied-by-PV /ev/sdb3 /dev/mapper/myvg-root

  I'm having some difficulty figuring out what is going on and how to fix it. I have some divs that contain some icons that are causing a width problem when displaying tabular data. If I remove the div's that contain the icons, the row width ends up the way I want it (See the firefox example below). • Click in a ListView item changes status of elements inside the item?

  Hi, I don't know exactly how to explain this problem, but I'll try. I have a ListView with several items. Each item has inside a TextView and two ImageView. I want the ImageView change when I click on them, and I want to open a context menu when I press for a long time into the ListView item. For the ImageView, everything works properly. For the whole item, I can show the context menu after a long press, but my problem is that the ImageView changes as well when I am pressing the TextView, for example. • How do you invoke a python script inside a jar file using python ?

  I'm working on an application that intersperses a bunch of jython and java code. Due to the nature of the program (using wsadmin) we are really restricted to Python 2.1 We currently have a jar containing both java source and .py modules. The code is currently invoked using java, but I'd like to remove this in favor of migrating as much functionality as possible to jython. The problem I have is that I want to either import or execute python modules inside the existing jar file from a calling jython script. I've tried a couple of different ways without success. My directory structure looks like: application.jar |-- com |--example |-- action |-- MyAction.class |-- pre_myAction.py The 1st approach I tried was to do imports from the jar. I added the jar to my sys.path and tried to import the module using both import com.example.action.myAction and import myAction. No success however, even when I put init.py files into the directory at each level. The 2nd approach I tried was to load the resource using the java class. So I wrote the below code: import sys import os import com.example.action.MyAction as MyAction scriptName = str(MyAction.getResource('/com/example/action/myAction.py')) scriptStr = MyAction.getResourceAsStream('/com/example/action/myAction.py') try: print execfile(scriptStr) except: print "failed 1" try: print execfile(scriptName) except: print "failed 2" Both of these failed. • Missing WM_PAINT when hosting a WPF control inside a winforms application.

  Hi All, Consider the following scenario: 1) Create a winforms application with an empty form. 2) Create a WPF usercontrol in the same project which is just the default control with background changed to blue. <UserControl x:Class="WindowsFormsApplication2.UserControl1" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Height="300" Width="300" Background="Blue"> <Grid> </Grid> </UserControl> 3) Build the project 4) Add the control to your form (an ElementHost is added and the control is added inside it). 5) Run the application (everything looks nice) 6) Start Spy++, click find window (Control+F) and move the cursor onto the WPF control (the blue square) Something strange happens, the control gets a WM_ERASEBKGND message but no WM_PAINT message so now it is white. You can resize the form, hide the form behind other windows and the WPF control will not get rendered. Please tell me what is the best way to resolve this issue such that the WPF control renders itself correctly. • How can I put double quotes inside a string within an ajax JSON response from php?

  I receive a JSON response in an Ajax request from the server. This way it works: { "a" = "1", "b" = "hello 'kitty'" } But I did not succeed in putting double quotes around kitty. When I convert " to \x22 in the Ajax response, it is still interpreted as " by JavaScript and I cannot parse the JSON. Should I also escape the \ and unescape later (which would be possible)? How to do this? Edit: I am not sure if i expressed it well: I want this string inside of "b" after the parse: hello "kitty" If necessary I could also add an additional step after the parse to convert "b", but I guess it is not necessary, there is a more elegant way so this happens automatically? Edit2: The ajax page is generated by php. I am trying to parse the file with Perl's libXML and output the wellName and the rawData using the following: use XML::LibXML; my $parser = XML::LibXML->new(); my $doc = $parser->parse_file('/Users/johncumbers/Temp/1_12-18-09-111823.orig.xml'); my $xc = XML::LibXML::XPathContext->new( $doc->documentElement() ); $xc->registerNs('ns', 'http://moleculardevices.com/microplateML'); my @n = $xc->findnodes('//ns:wave[@waveID="1"]'); #xc is xpathContent # should find a tree from the node representing everything beneath the waveID 1 foreach $nod (@n) { my @c = $nod->findnodes('//rawData'); #element inside the tree. print @c; } It is not printing out anything right now and I think I have a problem with my Xpath statements. Please can you help me fix it, or can you show me how to trouble shoot the xpath statements? Thanks.

I was googling, asking and searching and no results :/ All I need is to find nodes with 'link' param using Zend\Navigation in my AliasSegment::match function. • Running a GWT application (including Applets) inside an IFRAME from an ASP.NET 3.5 app?

  We are looking at integrating a full-blown GWT (Google Web Toolkit 2.0) application with an existing ASP.NET 3.5 application. My first gut reaction is that this is a horrible frankenstein idea. However, the customer has insisted that we use this application developed by a third-party. I have almost NO CONTROL over the development of the GWT app. My first thought is to actually attempt to embed this in an iFrame. Because GWT is running under Tomcat/Jakarta, it is hosted on a different server from the .NET app so the iFrame src will be to a URL on the other machine. I need to utilize our own ASP.NET authorization scheme to restrict access to the embedded GWT application. The GWT app also uses embedded java applets, which don't seem to be working right now inside the iframe. The GWT app makes calls to a backend server (using GWT-RPC?). Any major problems with this approach that anyone can see? Will GWT work on an iframe while hosted on a different machine? NOTE: SIMPLY ADDING A DIV WITH THE SAME NAME DOES NOT WORK FOR THIS!

• How can I alter an external variable from inside my AJAX?

  I keep on having these same two problems. I have been trying to use Remy Sharp's wonderful tagSuggest plugin, and it works great. Until I try to use an AJAX call to get tags from my database. My setGlobalTags() works great, with my defined myTagList at the top of the function. What I want to do is set myTagList equal to the result from my AJAX. My problem is that I can neither call setGlobalTags() from inside my success or error functions, nor actually alter the original myTagList. Also, I keep on having this other issue as well. I keep this code in my Master page, and my AJAX returns 'success' on almost every page. I only (and always) get the error alert when I navigate to a page that actually contains something of id="ParentTags". I don't see why this is happening, because my $('#ParentTags').tagSuggest(); is definitely after my AJAX call. I realize that this is probably just some dumb conventions error, but I am new to this and I'm here to learn from you guys.   Hey. I'm trying to build a Hibernate Criteria query to find entities that have a specific element inside a collection. We can take as an example a Book -object that looks like this: public class Book { private Long id; private String title; private Set<String> authors = new HashSet<String>(); } The entity is mapped like this: <class name="Book" table="Book"> <id name="id" column="BOOK_ID"> <generator class="native"/> </id> <property name="title"/> <set name="authors" table="Book_Authors"> <key column="BOOK_ID"/> <element type="string" column="AUTHORS"/> </set> </class> Now I would like to find out which books are written by Matt. With pure SQL I can do a query like this: String author = "Matt"; String query = "SELECT * FROM Book " + "WHERE BOOK_ID IN " + "(SELECT BOOK_ID FROM Book_Authors " + "WHERE authors = :author )"; List<Book> result = session.createSQLQuery(query) .addEntity(Book.class) .setParameter("author", author) .list(); This works all good and well, and I get out all books that Matt has been a part of writing. The project I work in, however, uses the Criteria API instead of raw SQL, and I haven't found a way to express the same query in that form. I've taken a look on the Restrictions API and the closest I've found is Restions.in(propertyName, collection) but that works the other way around (one value in object, many values to match against). Any ideas?
